Divisors on matroids and their volumes
Published • View Publication • BIB
The classical volume polynomial in algebraic geometry measures the degrees of ample (and nef) divisors on a smooth projective variety. We introduce an analogous volume polynomial for matroids, and give a complete combinatorial formula. For a realizable matroid, we thus obtain an explicit formula for the classical volume polynomial of the associated wonderful compactification. We then introduce a new invariant called the volume of a matroid as a particular specialization of its volume polynomial, and discuss its algebro-geometric and combinatorial properties in connection to graded linear series on blow-ups of projective spaces.
The Whitney Duals of a Graded Poset
We introduce the notion of a \emph{Whitney dual} of a graded poset. Two posets are Whitney duals to each other if (the absolute value of) their Whitney numbers of the first and second kind are interchanged between the two posets. We define new types of edge and chain-edge labelings which we call \emph{Whitney labelings}. We prove that every graded poset with a Whitney labeling has a Whitney dual. Moreover, we show how to explicitly construct a Whitney dual using a technique involving quotient posets. As applications of our main theorem, we show that geometric lattices, the lattice of noncrossing partitions, the poset of weighted partitions studied by González D'León-Wachs, and most of the R$^*$S-labelable posets studied by Simion-Stanley all have Whitney duals. Our technique gives a combinatorial description of a Whitney dual of the noncrossing partition lattice in terms of a family of noncrossing Dyck paths. Our method also provides an explanation of the Whitney duality between the poset of weighted partitions and a poset of rooted forests studied by Reiner and Sagan. An integral part of this explanation is a new chain-edge labeling for the poset of weighted partitions which we show is a Whitney labeling. Finally, we show that a graded poset with a Whitney labeling admits a local action of the $0$-Hecke algebra of type $A$ on its set of maximal chains. The characteristic of the associated representation is Ehrenborg's flag quasisymmetric function. The existence of this action implies, using a result of McNamara, that when the maximal intervals of the constructed Whitney duals are bowtie-free, they are also snellable. In the case where these maximal intervals are lattices, they are supersolvable.

Applications of Graded Methods to Cluster Variables in Arbitrary Types
This thesis is concerned with studying the properties of gradings on several examples of cluster algebras, primarily of infinite type. We first consider two finite type cases: $B_n$ and $C_n$, completing a classification by Grabowski for coefficient-free finite type cluster algebras. We then consider gradings arising from $3 \times 3$ skew-symmetric matrices. We show that the mutation-cyclic matrices give rise to gradings in which all degrees are positive and have only finitely many associated cluster variables (excepting one particular case). For the mutation-acyclic matrices, we prove that all occurring degrees have infinitely many variables. We provide a sufficient condition for a graded cluster algebra generated by a quiver to have infinitely many degrees, based on the presence of a subquiver in its mutation class. We use this to show that the cluster algebras for (quantum) coordinate rings of matrices and Grassmannians contain cluster variables of all degrees in $\mathbb{N}$. Next we consider the list (given by Felikson, Shapiro & Tumarkin) of mutation-finite quivers that do not correspond to triangulations of marked surfaces. We show that $X_7$ gives rise to only two degrees, both with infinitely many variables, and that $\widetilde{E}_6$, $\widetilde{E}_7$ and $\widetilde{E}_8$ give rise to infinitely many variables in some degrees. Finally, we study gradings arising from marked surfaces (see Fomin, Shapiro & Thurston). We adapt a definition by Muller to define the space of valuation functions on such a surface and prove combinatorially that it is isomorphic to the space of gradings on the associated cluster algebra. We illustrate this theory by applying it to the annulus with $n+m$ marked points. We show that the standard grading is of mixed type. We also give an alternative grading in which all degrees have infinitely many cluster variables.

Atoms for signed permutations
Published in European J. Combin. 94 (2021), 103288 • View Publication • BIB
There is a natural analogue of weak Bruhat order on the involutions in any Coxeter group. The saturated chains of intervals in this order correspond to reduced words for a certain set of group elements called atoms. Brion gives a general formula for the cohomology class of a $K$-orbit closure in an arbitrary flag variety, where $K$ is a symmetric subgroup of a complex algebraic group. In type A, the terms in this formula are indexed by atoms for permutations. We study the combinatorics of atoms for involutions in the group of signed permutations. In particular, we give a compact description of the atom set for any signed involution and endow it with the structure of a graded poset. Our main result, as an application, is to identify explicitly the terms in Brion's cohomology formula in types B and C. These descriptions apply to all $K$-orbits in these types and are the first of their kind outside of type A.

Stirling Posets
Published • View Publication • BIB
We define combinatorially a partial order on the set partitions and show that it is equivalent to the Bruhat-Chevalley-Renner order on the upper triangular matrices. By considering subposets consisting of set partitions with a fixed number of blocks, we introduce and investigate "Stirling posets." As we show, the Stirling posets have a hierarchy and they glue together to give the whole set partition poset. Moreover, we show that they (Stirling posets) are graded and EL-shellable. We offer various reformulations of their length functions and determine the recurrences for their length generating series.

On the combinatorics of the Hopf algebra of dissection diagrams
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this article, we are interested in the Hopf algebra $\mathcal{H}_{D}$ of dissection diagrams introduced by Dupont in his thesis. We use the version with a parameter $x\in\mathbb{K}$. We want to study its underlying coalgebra. We conjecture it is cofree, except for a countable subset of $\mathbb{K}$. If $x=-1$ then we know there is no cofreedom. We easily see that $\mathcal{H}\_{D}$ is a free commutative right-sided combinatorial Hopf algebra according to Loday and Ronco. So, there exists a pre-Lie structure on its graded dual. Furthermore ${\mathcal{H}_{D}}^{\circledast}$ and the enveloping algebra of its primitive elements are isomorphic. Thus, we can equip ${\mathcal{H}\_{D}}^{\circledast}$ with a structure of Oudom and Guin. We focus on the pre-Lie structure on dissection diagrams and in particular on the pre-Lie algebra generated by the dissection diagram of degree $1$. We prove that it is not free. We express a Hopf algebra morphism between the Grossman and Larson Hopf algebra and ${\mathcal{H}_{D}}^{\circledast}$ by using pre-Lie and Oudom and Guin structures.

Combinatorics of compactified universal Jacobians
Published • View Publication • BIB
We use orientations on stable graphs to express the combinatorial structure of the compactified universal Jacobians in degrees g-1 and g over the moduli space of stable curves, \Mgb, and construct for them graded stratifications compatible with the one of \Mgb. In particular, for a stable curve we exhibit graded stratifications of the compactified Jacobians in terms of totally cyclic, respectively rooted, orientations on subgraphs of its dual graph.
Graded Expectations: Betti numbers and anti-lecture hall compositions of random threshold graphs
Published in Pacific J. Math. 319 (2022) 75-98 • View Publication • BIB
This paper examines the one-to-one-to-one correspondence between threshold graphs, Betti numbers of quotients of polynomial rings by $2$-linear ideals, and anti-lecture hall compositions. In particular, we establish new explicit combinatorial mappings between each of these classes of objects and calculate the expected values of the Betti numbers and anti-lecture hall composition corresponding to a random threshold graph.

Rigidity for the Hopf algebra of quasi-symmetric functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
We investigate the rigidity for the Hopf algebra ${\rm QSym}$ of quasisymmetric functions with respect to the monomial, the fundamental and the quasisymmetric Schur basis, respectively. By establishing some combinatorial properties of the posets of compositions arising from the analogous Pieri rules for quasisymmetric functions, we show that ${\rm QSym}$ is rigid as an algebra with respect to the quasisymmetric Schur basis, and rigid as a coalgebra with respect to the monomial and the quasisymmetric Schur basis, respectively. The natural actions of reversal, complement and transpose of the labelling compositions lead to some nontrivial graded (co)algebra automorphisms of ${\rm QSym}$. We prove that the linear maps induced by the three actions are precisely the only nontrivial graded algebra automorphisms that take the fundamental basis into itself. Furthermore, the complement map on the labels gives the unique nontrivial graded coalgebra automorphism preserving the fundamental basis, while the reversal map on the labels gives the unique nontrivial graded algebra automorphism preserving the monomial basis. Therefore, ${\rm QSym}$ is rigid as a Hopf algebra with respect to the monomial and the quasisymmetric Schur basis.

Gorenstein liaison for toric ideals of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A central question in liaison theory asks whether every Cohen-Macaulay, graded ideal of a standard graded K-algebra belongs to the same G-liaison class of a complete intersection. In this paper we answer this question positively for toric ideals defining edge subrings of bipartite graphs.

A combinatorial formula for graded multiplicities in excellent filtrations
Published in Transform. Groups 26 (2021), no. 1, 81-114 • View Publication • BIB
A filtration of a representation whose successive quotients are isomorphic to Demazure modules is called an excellent filtration. In this paper we study graded multiplicities in excellent filtrations of fusion products for the current algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_2[t]$. We give a combinatorial formula for the polynomials encoding these multiplicities in terms of two dimensional lattice paths. Corollaries to our main theorem include a combinatorial interpretation of various objects such as the coeffficients of Ramanujan's fifth order mock theta functions $φ_0, φ_1, ψ_0, ψ_1$, Kostka polynomials for hook partitions and quotients of Chebyshev polynomials. We also get a combinatorial interpretation of the graded multiplicities in a level one flag of a local Weyl module associated to the simple Lie algebras of type $B_n \text{ and } G_2$.
Footprint and minimum distance functions
Published in Commun. Korean Math. Soc. 33 (2018), No. 1, pp. 85--101 • Search Publication
Let $S$ be a polynomial ring over a field $K$, with a monomial order $\prec$, and let $I$ be an unmixed graded ideal of $S$. In this paper we study two functions associated to $I$: the minimum distance function $δ_I$ and the footprint function ${\rm fp}_I$. It is shown that $δ_I$ is positive and that ${\rm fp}_I$ is positive if the initial ideal of $I$ is unmixed. Then we show that if $I$ is radical and its associated primes are generated by linear forms, then $δ_I$ is strictly decreasing until it reaches the asymptotic value $1$. If $I$ is the edge ideal of a Cohen--Macaulay bipartite graph, we show that $δ_I(d)=1$ for $d$ greater than or equal to the regularity of $S/I$. For a graded ideal of dimension $\geq 1$, whose initial ideal is a complete intersection, we give an exact sharp lower bound for the corresponding minimum distance function.

Descent Representations of Generalized Coinvariant Algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
The coinvariant algebra $R_n$ is a well-studied $\mathfrak{S}_n$-module that is a graded version of the regular representation of $\mathfrak{S}_n$. Using a straightening algorithm on monomials and the Garsia-Stanton basis, Adin, Brenti, and Roichman gave a description of the Frobenius image of $R_n$, graded by partitions, in terms of descents of standard Young tableaux. Motivated by the Delta Conjecture of Macdonald polynomials, Haglund, Rhoades, and Shimozono gave an extension of the coinvariant algebra $R_{n,k}$ and an extension of the Garsia-Stanton basis. Chan and Rhoades further extend these results from $\mathfrak{S}_n$ to the complex reflection group $G(r,1,n)$ by defining a $G(r,1,n)$ module $S_{n,k}$ that generalizes the coinvariant algebra for $G(r,1,n)$. We extend the results of Adin, Brenti, and Roichman to $R_{n,k}$ and $S_{n,k}$.

A flag variety for the Delta Conjecture
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Delta Conjecture of Haglund, Remmel, and Wilson predicts the monomial expansion of the symmetric function $Δ'_{e_{k-1}} e_n$, where $k \leq n$ are positive integers and $Δ'_{e_{k-1}}$ is a Macdonald eigenoperator. When $k = n$, the specialization $Δ'_{e_{n-1}} e_n|_{t = 0}$ is the Frobenius image of the graded $S_n$-module afforded by the cohomology ring of the {\em flag variety} consisting of complete flags in $\mathbb{C}^n$. We define and study a variety $X_{n,k}$ which carries an action of $S_n$ whose cohomology ring $H^{\bullet}(X_{n,k})$ has Frobenius image given by $Δ'_{e_{k-1}} e_n|_{t = 0}$, up to a minor twist. The variety $X_{n,k}$ has a cellular decomposition with cells $C_w$ indexed by length $n$ words $w = w_1 \dots w_n$ in the alphabet $\{1, 2, \dots, k\}$ in which each letter appears at least once. When $k = n$, the variety $X_{n,k}$ is homotopy equivalent to the flag variety. We give a presentation for the cohomology ring $H^{\bullet}(X_{n,k})$ as a quotient of the polynomial ring $\mathbb{Z}[x_1, \dots, x_n]$ and describe polynomial representatives for the classes $[ \overline{C}_w]$ of the closures of the cells $C_w$; these representatives generalize the classical Schubert polynomials.
Hypergraph encodings of arbitrary toric ideals
Relying on the combinatorial classification of toric ideals using their bouquet structure, we focus on toric ideals of hypergraphs and study how they relate to general toric ideals. We show that hypergraphs exhibit a surprisingly general behavior: the toric ideal associated to any general matrix can be encoded by that of a $0/1$ matrix, while preserving the essential combinatorics of the original ideal. We provide two universality results about the unboundedness of degrees of various generating sets: minimal, Graver, universal Gröbner bases, and indispensable binomials. Finally, we provide a polarization-type operation for arbitrary positively graded toric ideals, which preserves all the combinatorial signatures and the homological properties of the original toric ideal.

Higher Cluster Categories and QFT Dualities
Published in Phys. Rev. D 98, 046021 (2018) • View Publication • BIB
We present a unified mathematical framework that elegantly describes minimally SUSY gauge theories in even dimension, ranging from $6d$ to $0d$, and their dualities. This approach combines recent developments on graded quiver with potentials, higher Ginzburg algebras and higher cluster categories (also known as $m$-cluster categories). Quiver mutations studied in the context of mathematics precisely correspond to the order $(m+1)$ dualities of the gauge theories. Our work suggests that these equivalences of quiver gauge theories sit inside an infinite family of such generalized dualities, whose physical interpretation is yet to be understood.
Forbidding rank-preserving copies of a poset

The maximum size, $La(n,P)$, of a family of subsets of $[n]=\{1,2,...,n\}$ without containing a copy of $P$ as a subposet, has been intensively studied. Let $P$ be a graded poset. We say that a family $\mathcal{F}$ of subsets of $[n]=\{1,2,...,n\}$ contains a \emph{rank-preserving} copy of $P$ if it contains a copy of $P$ such that elements of $P$ having the same rank are mapped to sets of same size in $\mathcal{F}$. The largest size of a family of subsets of $[n]=\{1,2,...,n\}$ without containing a rank-preserving copy of $P$ as a subposet is denoted by $La_{rp}(n,P)$. Clearly, $La(n,P) \le La_{rp}(n,P)$ holds. In this paper we prove asymptotically optimal upper bounds on $La_{rp}(n,P)$ for tree posets of height $2$ and monotone tree posets of height $3$, strengthening a result of Bukh in these cases. We also obtain the exact value of $La_{rp}(n,\{Y_{h,s},Y_{h,s}'\})$ and $La(n,\{Y_{h,s},Y_{h,s}'\})$, where $Y_{h,s}$ denotes the poset on $h+s$ elements $x_1,\dots,x_h,y_1,\dots,y_s$ with $x_1<\dots<x_h<y_1,\dots,y_s$ and $Y'_{h,s}$ denotes the dual poset of $Y_{h,s}$.

The heptagon-wheel cocycle in the Kontsevich graph complex
Published in J. Nonlin. Math. Phys. (2017) Vol.24 Suppl.1, 157--173 • View Publication • BIB
The real vector space of non-oriented graphs is known to carry a differential graded Lie algebra structure. Cocycles in the Kontsevich graph complex, expressed using formal sums of graphs on $n$ vertices and $2n-2$ edges, induce -- under the orientation mapping -- infinitesimal symmetries of classical Poisson structures on arbitrary finite-dimensional affine real manifolds. Willwacher has stated the existence of a nontrivial cocycle that contains the $(2\ell+1)$-wheel graph with a nonzero coefficient at every $\ell\in\mathbb{N}$. We present detailed calculations of the differential of graphs; for the tetrahedron and pentagon-wheel cocycles, consisting at $\ell = 1$ and $\ell = 2$ of one and two graphs respectively, the cocycle condition $d(γ) = 0$ is verified by hand. For the next, heptagon-wheel cocycle (known to exist at $\ell = 3$), we provide an explicit representative: it consists of 46 graphs on 8 vertices and 14 edges.

Colorful combinatorics and Macdonald polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
The non-negative integer cocharge statistic on words was introduced in the 1970's by Lascoux and Schützenberger to combinatorially characterize the Hall-Littlewood polynomials. Cocharge has since been used to explain phenomena ranging from the graded decomposition of Garsia-Procesi modules to the cohomology structure of the Grassman variety. Although its application to contemporary variations of these problems had been deemed intractable, we prove that the two-parameter, symmetric Macdonald polynomials are generating functions of a distinguished family of colored words. Cocharge adorns one parameter and the second measures its deviation from cocharge on words without color. We use the same framework to expand the plactic monoid, apply Kashiwara's crystal theory to various Garsia-Haiman modules, and to address problems in K-theoretic Schubert calculus.

On some actions of the 0-Hecke monoids of affine symmetric groups
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 161 (2019) 178-219 • View Publication • BIB
There are left and right actions of the 0-Hecke monoid of the affine symmetric group $\tilde{S}_n$ on involutions whose cycles are labeled periodically by nonnegative integers. Using these actions we construct two bijections, which are length-preserving in an appropriate sense, from the set of involutions in $\tilde{S}_n$ to the set of $\mathbb{N}$-weighted matchings in the $n$-element cycle graph. As an application, we compute a formula for the bivariate generating function counting the involutions in $\tilde S_n$ by length and absolute length. The 0-Hecke monoid of $\tilde{S}_n$ also acts on involutions (without any cycle labelling) by Demazure conjugation. The atoms of an involution $z \in \tilde{S}_n$ are the minimal length permutations $w$ which transform the identity to $z$ under this action. We prove that the set of atoms for an involution in $\tilde{S}_n$ is naturally a bounded, graded poset, and give a formula for the set's minimum and maximum elements. Using these properties, we classify the covering relations in the Bruhat order restricted to involutions in $\tilde{S}_n$.
