On the number of Birch partitions

Birch and Tverberg partitions are closely related concepts from discrete geometry. We show two properties for the number of Birch partitions: Evenness, and a lower bound. This implies the first non-trivial lower bound for the number of Tverberg partitions that holds for arbitrary q, where q is the number of partition blocks. The proofs are based on direct arguments, and do not use the equivariant method from topological combinatorics.

Borsuk-Ulam Theorems for Complements of Arrangements
In combinatorial problems it is sometimes possible to define a $G$-equivariant mapping from a space $X$ of configurations of a system to a Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^m$ for which a coincidence of the image of this mapping with an arrangement $\mathcal{A}$ of linear subspaces insures a desired set of linear conditions on a configuration. Borsuk-Ulam type theorems give conditions under which no $G$-equivariant mapping of $X$ to the complement of the arrangement exist. In this paper, precise conditions are presented which lead to such theorems through a spectral sequence argument. We introduce a blow up of an arrangement whose complement has particularly nice cohomology making such arguments possible. Examples are presented that show that these conditions are best possible.
Equivariant cohomology, symmetric functions and the Hilbert schemes of points on the total space of the invertible sheaf O(-2) over the projective line
Let X be the quasi-projective symplectic surface that is given by the total space of the invertible sheaf O(-2) over the projective line. Let Hilb X be the family of Hilbert schemes of points on X.
We give and prove a closed formula expressing any multiplicative characteristic class evaluated on the Hilb X in terms of the standard Fock space description of the cohomology of the Hilb X. As a side result, we also deduce a formula for the Chern character of the tangent bundles of the Hilb X.
The results found here are another step towards a complete description of the tangent bundle of the Hilbert scheme of a general quasi-projective surface as the formulas given here yield certain coefficients in that description.
Finally, we also give a closed formula expressing any multiplicative characteristic class evaluated on some tautological bundles on the Hilb X.

We describe recent work on positive descriptions of the structure constants of the cohomology of homogeneous spaces such as the Grassmannian, by degenerations and related methods. We give various extensions of these rules, some new and conjectural, to K-theory, equivariant cohomology, equivariant K-theory, and quantum cohomology.
Using Equivariant Obstruction Theory in Combinatorial Geometry
A significant group of problems coming from the realm of Combinatorial Geometry can only be approached through the use of Algebraic Topology. From the first such application to Kneser's problem in 1978 by Lov% ász \cite{Lovasz} through the solution of the Lovász conjecture \cite% {Babson-Kozlov}, \cite{Carsten}, many methods from Algebraic Topology have been used. Specifically, it appears that the understanding of equivariant theories is of the most importance. The solution of many problems depends on the existence of an elegantly constructed equivariant map. For example, the following problems were approached by discussing the existence of appropriate equivariant maps.A variety of results from algebraic topology were applied in solving these problems. The methods used ranged from well known theorems like Borsuk Ulam and Dold theorem to the integer / ideal valued index theories. In this paper we are going to extract the essence of the equivariant obstruction theory in order to obtain an effective \emph{general position map%} scheme for analyzing the problem of existence of equivariant maps.
Irregularity of hypergeometric systems via slopes along coordinate subspaces

We study the irregularity sheaves attached to the $A$-hypergeometric $D$-module $M_A(β)$ introduced by Gel'fand et al., where $A\in\mathbb{Z}^{d\times n}$ is pointed of full rank and $β\in\mathbb{C}^d$. More precisely, we investigate the slopes of this module along coordinate subspaces.
In the process we describe the associated graded ring to a positive semigroup ring for a filtration defined by an arbitrary weight vector $L$ on torus equivariant generators. To this end we introduce the $(A,L)$-umbrella, a simplicial complex determined by $A$ and $L$, and identify its facets with the components of the associated graded ring.
We then establish a correspondence between the full $(A,L)$-umbrella and the components of the $L$-characteristic variety of $M_A(β)$. We compute in combinatorial terms the multiplicities of these components in the $L$-characteristic cycle of the associated Euler-Koszul complex, identifying them with certain intersection multiplicities.
We deduce from this that slopes of $M_A(β)$ are combinatorial, independent of $β$, and in one-to-one correspondence with jumps of the $(A,L)$-umbrella. This confirms a conjecture of Sturmfels and gives a converse of a theorem of Hotta: $M_A(β)$ is regular if and only if $A$ defines a projective variety.
Kempf collapsing and quiver loci
Kempf [1976] studied proper, G-equivariant maps from equivariant vector bundles over flag manifolds to G-representations V, which he called _collapsings_. We give a simple formula for the G-equivariant cohomology class on V, or_multidegree_, associated to the image of a collapsing: apply a certain sequence of divided difference operators to a certain product of linear polynomials, then divide by the number of components in a general fiber. When that number of components is 1, we construct a desingularization of the image of the collapsing. If in addition the image has rational singularities, we can use the desingularization to give also a formula for the G-equivariant K-class of the image, whose leading term is the multidegree.
Our application is to quiver loci and quiver polynomials. Let Q be a quiver of finite type (A, D, or E, in arbitrary orientation), and assign a vector space to each vertex. Let \Hom denote the (linear) space of representations of Q with these vector spaces. This carries an action of GL, the product of the general linear groups of the individual vector spaces. A_quiver locus_ Ωis the closure in \Hom of a GL-orbit, and its multidegree is the corresponding _quiver polynomial_. Reineke [2004] proved that every ADE quiver locus is the image of a birational Kempf collapsing (giving a desingularization directly).
Using Reineke's collapsings, we give formulae for ADE quiver polynomials, previously only computed in type A (though in this case, our formulae are new). In the A and D cases quiver loci are known to have rational singularities [Bobiński-Zwara 2002], so we also get formulae for their K-classes, which had previously only been computed in equioriented type A (and again our formulae are new).

Fomin and Kirillov initiated a line of research into the realization of the cohomology and $K$-theory of generalized flag varieties $G/B$ as commutative subalgebras of certain noncommutative algebras. This approach has several advantages, which we discuss. This paper contains the most comprehensive result in a series of papers related to the mentioned line of research. More precisely, we give a model for the $T$-equivariant $K$-theory of a generalized flag variety $K_T(G/B)$ in terms of a certain braided Hopf algebra called the Nichols-Woronowicz algebra. Our model is based on the Chevalley-type multiplication formula for $K_T(G/B)$ due to the first author and Postnikov; this formula is stated using certain operators defined in terms of so-called alcove paths (and the corresponding affine Weyl group). Our model is derived using a type-independent and concise approach.

This paper defines and studies permutation representations on the equivariant cohomology of Schubert varieties, as representations both over C and over C[t_1, t_2,...,t_n]. We show these group actions are the same as an action of simple transpositions studied geometrically by M. Brion, and give topological meaning to the divided difference operators studied by Berstein-Gelfand-Gelfand, Demazure, Kostant-Kumar, and others. We analyze these representations using the combinatorial approach to equivariant cohomology introduced by Goresky-Kottwitz-MacPherson. We find that each permutation representation on equivariant cohomology produces a representation on ordinary cohomology that is trivial, though the equivariant representation is not.
Schubert Classes in the Equivariant K-Theory and Equivariant Cohomology of the Lagrangian Grassmannian
We give positive formulas for the restriction of a Schubert Class to a T-fixed point in the equivariant K-theory and equivariant cohomology of the Lagrangian Grassmannian. Our formulas rely on a result of Ghorpade-Raghavan, which gives an equivariant Grobner degeneration of a Schubert variety in the neighborhood of a T-fixed point of the Lagrangian Grassmannian.

For several important classes of manifolds acted on by the torus, the information about the action can be encoded combinatorially by a regular n-valent graph with vector labels on its edges, which we refer to as the torus graph. By analogy with the GKM-graphs, we introduce the notion of equivariant cohomology of a torus graph, and show that it is isomorphic to the face ring of the associated simplicial poset. This extends a series of previous results on the equivariant cohomology of torus manifolds. As a primary combinatorial application, we show that a simplicial poset is Cohen-Macaulay if its face ring is Cohen-Macaulay. This completes the algebraic characterisation of Cohen-Macaulay posets initiated by Stanley. We also study blow-ups of torus graphs and manifolds from both the algebraic and the topological points of view.
Birational transformations of weighted graphs
We introduce the notion of a standard weighted graph and show that every weighted graph has an essentially unique standard model. Moreover we classify birational transformations between such models. Our central result shows that these are composed of elementary transformations. The latter ones are defined similarly to the well known elementary transformations of ruled surfaces.
In a forthcoming paper, we apply these results in the geometric setup to obtain standard equivariant completions of affine surfaces with an action of certain algebraic groups. We show that these completions are unique up to equivariant elementary transformations.
Small models of graph colouring manifolds and the Stiefel manifolds Hom(C_5, K_n)
We show Péter Csorba's conjecture that the graph homomorphism complex Hom(C_5,K_{n+2}) is homeomorphic to a Stiefel manifold, the space of unit tangent vectors to the n-dimensional sphere. For this a general tool is developed that allows to replace the complexes Hom(G, K_n) by smaller complexes that are homeomorphic to them whenever G is a graph for which those complexes are manifolds. The equivariant version of Csorba's conjecture is proved up to homotopy.
We also study certain subdivisions of simplicial manifolds that are related to the interval poset of their face posets and their connection with geometric approximations to diagonal maps.
Graphs and $({\Bbb Z}_2)^k$-actions
Let $\mathcal{A}_n^k$ denote all nonbounding effective smooth $({\Bbb Z}_2)^k$-actions on $n$-dimensional smooth closed connected manifolds, each of which is cobordant to one with finite fixed set. Motivated by GKM theory, one can associate to each action of $\mathcal{A}_n^k$ a $({\Bbb Z}_2)^k$-colored regular graph of valence $n$. Together with the combinatorics of colored graphs, equivariant cobordism and the tom Dieck-Kosniowski-Stong localization theorem, we give a lower bound for the number of fixed points of an action in $\mathcal{A}_n^k$, which can become the best possible in some cases; we determine the existence and the equivariant cobordism classification of all actions in $\mathcal{A}_n^k(h)$ with $h=3,4$, where $\mathcal{A}_n^k(h)$ is the subset of $\mathcal{A}_n^k$, each of which is equivariantly cobordant to an effective $({\Bbb Z}_2)^k$-action fixing just $h$ isolated points, and it is well-known that $\mathcal{A}_n^k(h)$ is empty if $h=1,2$; we characterize the explicit relationships among tangent representations at fixed points of each action in $\mathcal{A}_n^k(h)$ with $h=3,4$, which actually give the explicit solution of the Smith problem in such cases. As an application, we also study the minimum number of fixed points of all actions in $\mathcal{A}_n^k$.

We give a combinatorial description (including explicit differential-form bases) for the cohomology groups of the space of n distinct nonzero complex numbers, with coefficients in rank-one local systems which are of finite monodromy around the coordinate hyperplanes and trivial monodromy around all other hyperplanes. In the case where the local system is equivariant for the symmetric group, we write the cohomology groups as direct sums of inductions of one-dimensional characters of subgroups. This relies on an equivariant description of the Orlik-Solomon algebras of full monomial reflection groups (wreath products of the symmetric group with a cyclic group). The combinatorial models involved are certain representations of these wreath products which possess bases indexed by labelled trees.

Let $LG_n$ denote the Lagrangian Grassmannian parametrizing maximal isotropic (Lagrangian) subspaces of a fixed symplectic vector space of dimension $2n.$ For each strict partition $λ=(λ_1,...,λ_k)$ with $λ_1\leq n$ there is a Schubert variety $X(λ).$ Let $T$ denote a maximal torus of the symplectic group acting on $LG_n.$ Consider the $T$-equivariant cohomology of $LG_n$ and the $T$-equivariant fundamental class $σ(λ)$ of $X(λ).$ The main result of the present paper is an explicit formula for the restriction of the class $σ(λ)$ to any torus fixed point. The formula is written in terms of factorial analogue of the Schur $Q$-function, introduced by Ivanov. As a corollary to the restriction formula, we obtain an equivariant version of the Giambelli-type formula for $LG_n.$ As another consequence of the main result, we obtained a presentation of the ring $H_T^*(LG_n).$
