Optimal bounds for the colored Tverberg problem
Published in J. Eur. Math. Soc. 17 (2015), no. 4, 739-754 • View Publication • BIB
We prove a "Tverberg type" multiple intersection theorem. It strengthens the prime case of the original Tverberg theorem from 1966, as well as the topological Tverberg theorem of Barany et al. (1980), by adding color constraints. It also provides an improved bound for the (topological) colored Tverberg problem of Barany & Larman (1992) that is tight in the prime case and asymptotically optimal in the general case. The proof is based on relative equivariant obstruction theory.

Singular lines of trilinear forms
Published in Linear Algebra Appl.433(3): 690-697, 2010 • View Publication • BIB
We prove that an alternating e-form on a vector space over a quasi-algebraically closed field always has a singular (e-1)-dimensional subspace, provided that the dimension of the space is strictly greater than e. Here an (e-1)-dimensional subspace is called singular if pairing it with the e-form yields zero. By the theorem of Chevalley and Warning our result applies in particular to finite base fields. Our proof is most interesting in the case where e=3 and the space has odd dimension n; then it involves a beautiful equivariant map from alternating trilinear forms to polynomials of degree (n-3)/2. We also give a sharp upper bound on the dimension of subspaces all of whose 2-dimensional subspaces are singular for a non-degenerate trilinear form. In certain binomial dimensions the trilinear forms attaining this upper bound turn out to form a single orbit under the general linear group, and we classify their singular lines.

Consider Bernoulli(1/2) percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^d$, and define a perfect matching between open and closed vertices in a way that is a deterministic equivariant function of the configuration. We want to find such matching rules that make the probability that the pair of the origin is at distance greater than $r$ decay as fast as possible. For two dimensions, we give a matching of decay $cr^{1/2}$, which is optimal. For dimension at least 3 we give a matching rule that has an exponential tail. This substantially improves previous bounds. The construction has two major parts: first we define a sequence of coarser and coarser partitions of $\mathbb{Z}^d$ in an equivariant way, such that with high probability the cell of a fixed point is like a cube, and the labels in it are i.i.d. Then we define a matching for a fixed finite cell, which stabilizes as we repeatedly apply it for the cells of the consecutive partitions. Our methods also work in the case when one wants to match points of two Poisson processes, and they may be applied to allocation questions.

A Gröbner basis for Kazhdan-Lusztig ideals
Published in American Journal of Mathematics 134 (2012), 1089-1137 • View Publication • BIB
Kazhdan-Lusztig ideals, a family of generalized determinantal ideals investigated in [Woo-Yong '08], provide an explicit choice of coordinates and equations encoding a neighbourhood of a torus-fixed point of a Schubert variety on a type A flag variety. Our main result is a Grobner basis for these ideals. This provides a single geometric setting to transparently explain the naturality of pipe dreams on the Rothe diagram of a permutation, and their appearance in: * combinatorial formulas [Fomin-Kirillov '94] for Schubert and Grothendieck polynomials of [Lascoux-Schutzenberger '82]; * the equivariant K-theory specialization formula of [Buch-Rimanyi '04]; and * a positive combinatorial formula for multiplicities of Schubert varieties in good cases, including those for which the associated Kazhdan-Lusztig ideal is homogeneous under the standard grading. Our results generalize (with alternate proofs) [Knutson-Miller '05]'s Grobner basis theorem for Schubert determinantal ideals and their geometric interpretation of the monomial positivity of Schubert polynomials. We also complement recent work of [Knutson '08,'09] on degenerations of Kazhdan-Lusztig varieties in general Lie type, as well as work of [Goldin '01] on equivariant localization and of [Lakshmibai-Weyman '90], [Rosenthal-Zelevinsky '01], and [Krattenthaler '01] on Grassmannian multiplicity formulas.

A positive Monk formula in the S^1-equivariant cohomology of type A Peterson varieties
Published • View Publication • BIB
Peterson varieties are a special class of Hessenberg varieties that have been extensively studied e.g. by Peterson, Kostant, and Rietsch, in connection with the quantum cohomology of the flag variety. In this manuscript, we develop a generalized Schubert calculus, and in particular a positive Chevalley-Monk formula, for the ordinary and Borel-equivariant cohomology of the Peterson variety $Y$ in type $A_{n-1}$, with respect to a natural $S^1$-action arising from the standard action of the maximal torus on flag varieties. As far as we know, this is the first example of positive Schubert calculus beyond the realm of Kac-Moody flag varieties $G/P$. Our main results are as follows. First, we identify a computationally convenient basis of $H^*_{S^1}(Y)$, which we call the basis of Peterson Schubert classes. Second, we derive a manifestly positive, integral Chevalley-Monk formula for the product of a cohomology-degree-2 Peterson Schubert class with an arbitrary Peterson Schubert class. Both $H^*_{S^1}(Y)$ and $H^*(Y)$ are generated in degree 2. Finally, by using our Chevalley-Monk formula we give explicit descriptions (via generators and relations) of both the $S^1$-equivariant cohomology ring $H^*_{S^1}(Y)$ and the ordinary cohomology ring $H^*(Y)$ of the type $A_{n-1}$ Peterson variety. Our methods are both directly from and inspired by those of GKM (Goresky-Kottwitz-MacPherson) theory and classical Schubert calculus. We discuss several open questions and directions for future work.

Topology of Hom complexes and test graphs for bounding chromatic number
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce new methods for understanding the topology of $\Hom$ complexes (spaces of homomorphisms between two graphs), mostly in the context of group actions on graphs and posets. We view $\Hom(T,-)$ and $\Hom(-,G)$ as functors from graphs to posets, and introduce a functor $(-)^1$ from posets to graphs obtained by taking atoms as vertices. Our main structural results establish useful interpretations of the equivariant homotopy type of $\Hom$ complexes in terms of spaces of equivariant poset maps and $Γ$-twisted products of spaces. When $P = F(X)$ is the face poset of a simplicial complex $X$, this provides a useful way to control the topology of $\Hom$ complexes. Our foremost application of these results is the construction of new families of `test graphs' with arbitrarily large chromatic number - graphs $T$ with the property that the connectivity of $\Hom(T,G)$ provides the best possible lower bound on the chromatic number of $G$. In particular we focus on two infinite families, which we view as higher dimensional analogues of odd cycles. The family of `spherical graphs' have connections to the notion of homomorphism duality, whereas the family of `twisted toroidal graphs' lead us to establish a weakened version of a conjecture (due to Lovász) relating topological lower bounds on chromatic number to maximum degree. Other structural results allow us to show that any finite simplicial complex $X$ with a free action by the symmetric group $S_n$ can be approximated up to $S_n$-homotopy equivalence as $\Hom(K_n,G)$ for some graph $G$; this is a generalization of a result of Csorba. We conclude the paper with some discussion regarding the underlying categorical notions involved in our study.

Pieri resolutions for classical groups
Published in J. Algebra 329 (2011), 222-259 • View Publication • BIB
We generalize the constructions of Eisenbud, Fløystad, and Weyman for equivariant minimal free resolutions over the general linear group, and we construct equivariant resolutions over the orthogonal and symplectic groups. We also conjecture and provide some partial results for the existence of an equivariant analogue of Boij-Söderberg decompositions for Betti tables, which were proven to exist in the non-equivariant setting by Eisenbud and Schreyer. Many examples are given.

Positivity of Equivariant Schubert Classes Through Moment Map Degeneration
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a flag manifold $M=G/B$ with the canonical torus action, the $T-$equivariant cohomology is generated by equivariant Schubert classes, with one class $τ_u$ for every element $u$ of the Weyl group $W$. These classes are determined by their restrictions to the fixed point set $M^T \simeq W$, and the restrictions are polynomials with nonnegative integer coefficients in the simple roots. The main result of this article is a positive formula for computing $τ_u(v)$ in types A, B, and C. To obtain this formula we identify $G/B$ with a generic co-adjoint orbit and use a result of Goldin and Tolman to compute $τ_u(v)$ in terms of the induced moment map. Our formula, given as a sum of contributions of certain maximal ascending chains from $u$ to $v$, follows from a systematic degeneration of the moment map, corresponding to degenerating the co-adjoint orbit. In type A we prove that our formula is manifestly equivalent to the formula announced by Billey in \cite{Bi}, but in type C, the two formulas are not equivalent.

Equivariant closure operators and trisp closure maps
Published • View Publication • BIB
A trisp closure map is a special map on the vertices of a trisp T with the property that T collapses onto the subtrisp induced by the image of the map. We study the interaction between trisp closure maps and group operations on the trisp, and give conditions such that the quotient map is again a trisp closure map. Special attention is on the case that the trisp is the nerve of an acyclic category, and the relationship between trisp closure maps and closure operators on posets is studied.

K-theory Schubert calculus of the affine Grassmannian
Published in Compositio Math. 146 (2010) 811-852 • View Publication • BIB
We construct the Schubert basis of the torus-equivariant K-homology of the affine Grassmannian of a simple algebraic group G, using the K-theoretic NilHecke ring of Kostant and Kumar. This is the K-theoretic analogue of a construction of Peterson in equivariant homology. For the case G = SL_n, the K-homology of the affine Grassmannian is identified with a sub-Hopf algebra of the ring of symmetric functions. The Schubert basis is represented by inhomogeneous symmetric functions, called K-k-Schur functions, whose highest degree term is a k-Schur function. The dual basis in K-cohomology is given by the affine stable Grothendieck polynomials, verifying a conjecture of Lam. In addition, we give a Pieri rule in K-homology. Many of our constructions have geometric interpretations using Kashiwara's thick affine flag manifold.

Equivariant classes of matrix matroid varieties
Consider an integer associated with every subset of the set of columns of an $n\times k$ matrix. The collection of those matrices for which the rank of a union of columns is the predescribed integer for every subset, will be denoted by $X_C$. We study the equivariant cohomology class represented by the Zariski closure $Y_C$ of this set. We show that the coefficients of this class are solutions to problems in enumerative geometry, which are natural generalization of the linear Gromov-Witten invariants of projective spaces. We also show how to calculate these classes and present their basic properties.

Poset homology of Rees products, and $q$-Eulerian polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
The notion of Rees product of posets was introduced by Björner and Welker, where they study connections between poset topology and commutative algebra. Björner and Welker conjectured and Jonsson proved that the dimension of the top homology of the Rees product of the truncated Boolean algebra $B_n \setminus \{0\}$ and the $n$-chain $C_n$ is equal to the number of derangements in the symmetric group $\mathfrak S_n$. Here we prove a refinement of this result, which involves the Eulerian numbers, and a $q$-analog of both the refinement and the original conjecture, which comes from replacing the Boolean algebra by the lattice of subspaces of the $n$-dimensional vector space over the $q$ element field, and involves the $(\maj,\exc)$-$q$-Eulerian polynomials studied in previous papers of the authors. Equivariant versions of the refinement and the original conjecture are also proved, as are type BC versions (in the sense of Coxeter groups) of the original conjecture and its $q$-analog.

We describe a software package for constructing minimal free resolutions of GL_n(Q)-equivariant graded modules M over Q[x_1, ..., x_n] such that for all i, the ith syzygy module of M is generated in a single degree. We do so by describing some algorithms for manipulating polynomial representations of the general linear group GL_n(Q) following ideas of Olver and Eisenbud-Floystad-Weyman.
Double Schubert polynomials for the classical groups
Published in Advances in Mathematics 226 (2011), 840--886 • View Publication • BIB
For each infinite series of the classical Lie groups of type B,C or D, we introduce a family of polynomials parametrized by the elements of the corresponding Weyl group of infinite rank. These polynomials represent the Schubert classes in the equivariant cohomology of the appropriate flag variety. They satisfy a stability property, and are a natural extension of the (single) Schubert polynomials of Billey and Haiman, which represent non-equivariant Schubert classes. They are also positive in a certain sense, and when indexed by maximal Grassmannian elements, or by the longest element in a finite Weyl group, these polynomials can be expressed in terms of the factorial analogues of Schur's Q- or P-functions defined earlier by Ivanov.

Quantum K-theory of Grassmannians
Published in Duke Math. J. 156, no. 3 (2011), 501-538 • View Publication • BIB
We show that (equivariant) K-theoretic 3-point Gromov-Witten invariants of genus zero on a Grassmann variety are equal to triple intersections computed in the ordinary (equivariant) K-theory of a two-step flag manifold, thus generalizing an earlier result of Buch, Kresch, and Tamvakis. In the process we show that the Gromov-Witten variety of curves passing through 3 general points is irreducible and rational. Our applications include Pieri and Giambelli formulas for the quantum K-theory ring of a Grassmannian, which determine the multiplication in this ring. Our formula for Gromov-Witten invariants can be partially generalized to cominuscule homogeneous spaces by using a construction of Chaput, Manivel, and Perrin.

On rigid Hirzebruch genera
Published in Mosc. Math. J., 11:1 (2011), 139-147 • View Publication • BIB
The classical multiplicative (Hirzebruch) genera of manifolds have the wonderful property which is called rigidity. Rigidity of a genus h means that if a compact connected Lie group G acts on a manifold X, then the equivariant genus h^G(X) is independent on G, i.e. h^G(X)=h(X). In this paper we are considering the rigidity problem for complex manifolds. In particular, we are proving that a genus is rigid if and only if it is a generalized Todd genus.
Vector partition functions and index of transversally elliptic operators
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let G be a torus acting linearly on a complex vector space M, and let X be the list of weights of G in M. We determine the equivariant K-theory of the open subset of M consisting of points with finite stabilizers. We identify it to the space DM(X) of functions on the lattice of weights of G, satisfying the cocircuit difference equations associated to X, introduced by Dahmen--Micchelli in the context of the theory of splines in order to study vector partition functions. This allows us to determine the range of the index map from G-transversally elliptic operators on M to generalized functions on G and to prove that the index map is an isomorphism on the image. This is a setting studied by Atiyah-Singer which is in a sense universal for index computations.

On 3-manifolds with locally-standard (Z_2)^3-actions
Published in Topology and its applications 160 (2013), no. 4, 596-605 • View Publication • BIB
As a generalization of Davis-Januszkiewicz theory, there is an essential link between locally standard $(\Z_2)^n$-actions (or $T^n$-actions) actions and nice manifolds with corners, so that a class of nicely behaved equivariant cut-and-paste operations on locally standard actions can be carried out in step on nice manifolds with corners. Based upon this, we investigate what kinds of closed manifolds admit locally standard $(\Z_2)^n$-actions; especially for the 3-dimensional case. Suppose $M$ is an orientable closed connected 3-manifold. When $H_1(M;\Z_2)=0$, it is shown that $M$ admits a locally standard $(\Z_2)^3$-action if and only if $M$ is homeomorphic to a connected sum of 8 copies of some $\Z_2$-homology sphere $N$, and if further assuming $M$ is irreducible, then $M$ must be homeomorphic to $S^3$. In addition, the argument is extended to rational homology 3-sphere $M$ with $H_1(M;\Z_2) \cong \Z_2$ and an additional assumption that the $(\Z_2)^3$-action has a fixed point.
