On maximal Dynkin friezes
Published in Poly. J. Math. 4(12):1-17, 2026 • Search Publication
The maximal entries of Dynkin friezes over the positive integers have recently been determined for all finite Dynkin types except $B_n$ and $D_n$. In this note, we explicitly construct large positive integral points on affine cluster varieties of type $B_n$ (resp. $D_n$), giving rise to friezes of types $B_n$ (resp. $D_n$) over the positive integers with largest entries $F_{n+1} F_{n+2} - 1$ (resp. $F_n F_{n+1} - 1$) where $F_k$ is the $k$-th Fibonacci number. We conjecture that these are the maximal possible entries for their respective Dynkin types.

Bounds on skew dimensions and characters of symmetric groups via thick hook decompositions
We introduce a new decomposition of Young diagrams into thick hooks. These thick hook decompositions enable having a better control over hook products for excited diagrams in the Naruse hook length formula, which leads to improved bounds on the number of standard tableaux of skew shapes. Combining this with elementary counting arguments in the Murnaghan--Nakayama rule, we establish a uniform bound on characters of symmetric groups $\mathfrak{S}_n$. In the case of balanced representations, this improves on the character bounds of Féray and Śniady for permutations with support size at least $n^{2/3}$, and is sharp for permutations with support size of order $n$. Finally, we recover some bounds of Pak and Panova on Kronecker coefficients with very short proofs that rely on characters.

Palindromic Poincaré polynomials in $B_n$
We describe the set of palindromic Poincaré polynomials in $B_n$. As a key ingredient in this classification, we prove that $A_n$ embeds into $B_n$ as a lower interval in Bruhat order. Consequently, all Poincare polynomials $P_w(q)$ and all Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials $P_{x,y}(q)$ of $A_n$ occur in $B_n$.

Counting factorizations of Singer cycles in linear and unitary groups
We count factorizations of Singer cycles as products of reflections in the families of special and general unitary and linear groups over a finite field. In the case of minimum-length factorizations, the resulting answer is a striking product formula resembling the count for minimum-length factorizations of Coxeter elements into reflections in complex reflections groups. Moreover, for minimum length, the answers for the unitary and linear groups exhibit the phenomenon of Ennola duality, where the number of factorizations in a unitary group over the field $\mathbb{F}_q$ is given by replacing `$q$' with `$-q$' in the corresponding answer for a linear group. We use the character theory of these groups to make this count, and in particular we employ the Deligne--Lusztig theory of characters for finite reductive groups.

Categorification of $k$-Schur functions and refined Macdonald positivity
We establish a substantial part of the categorification framework for $k$-Schur functions proposed in Chen's Ph.D.\ thesis, written under the supervision of Mark Haiman. More precisely, we realize $k$-Schur functions as the graded characters of a distinguished family of objects in a certain module category and establish module-theoretic analogues of several foundational properties of $k$-Schur functions. A final part of Chen's framework predicts a homological characterization of modules admitting filtrations by these distinguished objects; we establish this characterization under an additional combinatorial hypothesis. In addition, we unconditionally prove that modules arising in this framework admit filtrations whose subquotients are affine Demazure modules of level $k$. As a consequence, modified Macdonald polynomials expand positively in the characters of affine Demazure modules. This may be viewed as a homological refinement of Macdonald positivity, arising from an intrinsic $\mathrm{ext}$-orthogonality condition on the corresponding Garsia--Haiman modules. We also prove the combinatorial hypothesis for $m \le 2k$ in the appendix and verify it computationally for $m\leq 19$, yielding $k$-Schur positivity of modified Macdonald polynomials in these cases. Our approach builds on our previous work on the algebraic and geometric realization of Catalan symmetric functions, a class encompassing both $k$-Schur and Hall--Littlewood functions.

Interval endomorphism algebras of posets: Reedy structure, combinatorics, and homological theory
Let $P$ be a finite connected poset and let $Λ_P$ be the opposite endomorphism algebra of the direct sum of all interval representations of $P$ over a field. Via projectivization, this algebra governs resolutions relative to interval-decomposable representations, which arise naturally in persistence theory. We first show that $Λ_P$ carries a Reedy algebra structure in the sense of Dalezios--Šťov\'ıček. Its Reedy degree is given by the cardinality of the indexing interval, and the induced quasi-hereditary order is given by reverse interval cardinality. With respect to the resulting quasi-hereditary structure, we give a concrete combinatorial description of the standard modules and construct explicit projective resolutions of these modules. Using these resolutions, we reduce the calculation of standard--simple Ext groups to the reduced cohomology of simplicial complexes determined by the interval combinatorics. Order reversal gives the corresponding simple--costandard formula. Building on these calculations, we determine all simple--simple Ext groups. These groups are one-dimensional in a unique degree when the corresponding pair of intervals is saturated, and vanish otherwise. As a consequence, we obtain an exact combinatorial formula for the global dimension of $Λ_P$, which in particular shows that it is independent of the coefficient field. As an application, for the $m$ by $\ell$ grid $G_{m,\ell}$ with $m\geq\ell\geq2$, we give the explicit formula $\operatorname{gldim}Λ_{G_{m,\ell}}=\min\{2\ell,m+\ell-2\}$. This also gives an explicit formula for the interval-resolution global dimension of these grids, settling the corresponding grid conjectures of Asashiba--Escolar--Nakashima--Yoshiwaki and determining the stable value and the precise stabilization threshold.

Breaker Chains and Splitting of Interval Submodules in Zigzag Modules
Finite-dimensional zigzag modules decompose into interval modules. For an ordinary persistence module, every fully supported interval submodule of a restriction splits as a direct summand, whereas this need not hold for a zigzag module. We study this failure of splitting. A breaker pair is a local configuration of two overlapping interval summands with a backward arrow at the left boundary of the second interval and a forward arrow at the right boundary of the first. A single breaker pair gives a local nonsplitting interval submodule, but it need not control a prescribed larger restriction. We therefore introduce breaker chains. Our main result shows that a restriction $V[p,q]$ contains a nonsplitting submodule isomorphic to $I[p,q]$ if and only if its interval decomposition contains a breaker chain spanning $[p,q]$. Equivalently, the proper interval summands $J$ for which $\operatorname{Hom}(I[p,q],J)\ne0$ have supports covering $[p,q]$. This cover formulation gives a constructive description of nonsplitting embeddings, a trichotomy for their splitting behavior, and an $O(m\log m)$ algorithm from an oriented barcode with $m$ intervals.

A law of large numbers for Macdonald coherent measures
We resolve a conjecture on the law of large numbers for coherent measures on Young diagrams associated with Macdonald-nonnegative specializations of the algebra of symmetric functions for all $0\le q,t<1$. We prove that row and column lengths divided by the diagram size converge to the corresponding specialization parameters. The proof combines a monomial estimate for skew Macdonald polynomials with exponential tilting and binomial decompositions obtained from the branching rule for the polynomials.

Simplicial Complexes of Antichains in Root Posets and Related Combinatorics of Dyck Paths
For a crystallographic root system ${\mathfrak D}$ we consider the simplicial complex $Δ_{\mathfrak D}$ of all antichains in the root poset of ${\mathfrak D}$. We show that $Δ_{\mathfrak D}$ is shellable if and only if ${\mathfrak D}$ is $A_n$, $B_n$, $D_3$ or $G_2$. Since antichains in types $A_n$ and $B_n$ can be identified with Dyck paths and symmetric Dyck paths, respectively, this yields a simplicial complex on Dyck paths. Indeed, in type $A_n$, shellability can be extended to rational Dyck paths. The $f$- and $h$-triangles then yield statistics on (symmetric/rational) Dyck paths. We determine these statistics for $A_n$ and $B_n$ and leave the case of rational Dyck paths as an open problem.

Zeros in The Character Table of The Wreath Product of The Symmetric Group
Let $G$ be a finite group with $t$ conjugacy classes, and let $S_N$ be the symmetric group. Let $Z_t(N)$ be the number of zeros in the character table of the wreath product $G\wr S_N$. We prove \begin{equation*} Z_t(N)\ge \frac{2p_t(N)^{2}}{\log \frac{N}{t}}\left(1+O\left(\frac{\log \log \frac{N}{t}}{\log \frac{N}{t}}\right)\right), \end{equation*} where $p_t(N)$ is the number of $t$-multipartitions of $N$.

Cutoff for q-deformed classical card shuffles in the type A Iwahori--Hecke algebra
We study the mixing behavior of three q-deformed card shuffles on $\mathcal{H}_q(S_n)$: the short systematic scan introduced in \cite{DiaconisRam2000}, the $q$--deformed random--to--random shuffle introduced in \cite{AxelrodFreedBraunerChiangComminsLang2024}, and the $q$--deformed $k$--star transposition shuffle, whose $q=1$ counterpart was studied in \cite{ArfaeeNestoridi}. The first two chains were diagonalized in \cite{DiaconisRam2000} and \cite{AxelrodFreedBraunerChiangComminsLang2024}, respectively. Here, we diagonalize the $q$--deformed $k$--star transposition shuffle and use the spectra of the three chains to study their mixing behavior. For fixed $q>1$, we prove that all three exhibit total variation and $\ell^2$ cutoff. For the short systematic scan, these improve both the upper and lower bounds of Diaconis and Ram \cite{DiaconisRam2000}.

Lieb's Permanental Dominance Conjecture for Ordinary Immanants through Order Fifteen
Pate proved ordinary irreducible-immanant permanental dominance through order $13$ and identified $(4,4,3,3)$ as the sole remaining order-$14$ case, with $(5,4,3,3)$ and $(3^5)$ forming the order-$15$ frontier. These three cases are settled here; consequently $d_λ(A)/f^λ\le \operatorname{per}(A)$ for every partition $λ\vdash n$ with $n\le15$ and every complex Hermitian positive-semidefinite matrix $A$. The argument also yields results beyond this finite frontier: an exact four-term bridge for $(4,4,3,3)$, the uniform family $(m,4,3,3)$, a two-parameter family $(a,b,3,3)$ for $a\ge b\ge4$ and $5a\ge8b$, and a long-first-row criterion for arbitrary fixed tails. These results arise from explicit specializations of Pate's $W$-function positivity framework using partial swaps, Young projectors, Pieri--content identities, and branching data. For $(3^5)$, an exact Farkas certificate shows that the central-projector partial-swap cone is insufficient; a branching-refined one-swap construction escapes this obstruction and yields a positive $106+19$-witness certificate. Boundary-compression and node-moving results further describe the reach and limitations of the local-filter method. All finite certificates are checked by exact integer or rational arithmetic and are supplied as ancillary material. The order-$14$ bridge is additionally formalized and kernel-checked in Lean 4 for all complex Hermitian positive-semidefinite matrices, including the exact coefficient normalization and the deduction of $(4,4,3,3)$ permanental dominance from four explicitly stated Pate inequalities.

Torus actions on compactified braid varieties and polytopality of subword complexes
Every cluster variety admits an action of its cluster dilation group. We prove that, in the case of braid varieties for simple Lie groups, this action always extends to a regular action on each of the brick compactifications. We explore two applications of this result. First, we show that any closed Richardson variety admits a faithful action of a torus of rank the Kazhdan-Lusztig $d$-invariant, answering affirmatively a recent question of E. Gorsky--S. Kim--M. Sherman-Bennett. The same result holds for projected Richardson varieties. Second, we show that the braid variety is a torus if and only if for each of its brick compactifications, the polar dual of the moment polytope for this action realizes the corresponding subword complex. The braid words satisfying this property turn out to be precisely the double root free words of V. Pilaud and C. Stump. This provides a novel approach to the longstanding open question of the polytopality of spherical subword complexes asked by A. Knutson and E. Miller, and in particular gives infinite families of subword complexes admitting polytopal realizations in dimension higher than the rank of the corresponding Coxeter group. As a common consequence of these two applications, we classify all Bruhat intervals in finite crystallographic Coxeter groups which are isomorphic to face lattices of convex polytopes via certain double root free words.

Kirillov-Reshetikhin Dual Equivalence Graphs
Let $U$ be a tensor product of highest weight modules of $GL_n(\mathbb C)$ corresponding to multiples of fundamental weights (i.e. rectangles). We consider three ways to stratify $U^{\otimes k}$ into components: using isotypic components of the cyclic action on tensor factors, using a generalization of the charge statistic, and using certain generalizations of Assaf's dual equivalence graphs. We conjecture that all three ways coincide, and we prove that the latter two ways coincide. The Kirillov-Reshetikhin dual equivalence graphs (KR DEGs) we introduce for this purpose are defined on $0$-weight spaces of tensor products of Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystals. They generalize Kazhdan-Lusztig dual equivalence graphs (KL DEGs) that previously appeared in the study of Kazhdan-Lusztig cells in affine type A. While the tensor products of Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystals are connected as affine crystals, the KR DEGs in general are not.

Level-Rank Dualities for Finite Reductive Groups
This is an extended abstract of our work "Level-Rank Dualities from $Φ$-Cuspidal Pairs..." We present evidence for a family of surprising coincidences within the representation theory of a finite reductive group $G$: more precisely, dualities between blocks of cyclotomic Hecke algebras attached by Broué-Malle to $Φ$-cuspidal pairs of $G$, where the Hecke parameters are specialized not to the order of the underlying finite field, but to roots of unity. For the groups $G = \mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbf{F}_q)$, these coincidences can be expressed very concretely in terms of the combinatorics of partitions, and the whole story recovers an avatar of the level-rank duality studied by Frenkel, Uglov, Chuang-Miyachi, and others.

The cyclic-induction Schur cone: Boolean sums, Ramanujan-square positivity, and integral structure
We study the Schur-positive cone in $\Rspace_{n,\mathbb R}\coloneqq \operatorname{span}_{\mathbb R}\{p_d^{n/d}:d\mid n\}$ through its basis $Q_{n,d}\coloneqq\ell_{n/d}^{(1)}[p_d]$, where $\ell_m^{(1)}$ is the Frobenius characteristic of the representation induced to $S_m$ from a faithful linear character of the subgroup generated by an $m$-cycle; brackets denote plethysm. A Boolean $Q$-sum is a sum of distinct elements of this basis. We give a unified proof of four conjectures of Sundaram on Schur positivity by classifying all Schur-positive Boolean $Q$-sums; the case of sums over divisors up to a prescribed bound recovers Hou's theorem. Specifically, for a nonempty set $J$ of divisors of $n$, the sum $\sum_{d\in J}Q_{n,d}$ is Schur-positive exactly when $1\in J$ and, for even $n$, $n\in J$ implies $n/2\in J$. The same character estimates prove the Ramanujan-square conjecture of Shareshian and Sundaram: the function $\sum_{d\mid n}c_d(n/d)^2p_d^{n/d}$, where $c_d(r)$ is the Ramanujan sum, has a positive coefficient of $s_λ$ for every $n\ge1$ and $λ\vdash n$, except when $n\equiv2\pmod4$ and $λ=(1^n)$, in which case the coefficient is zero. We prove that an element of this space has integral Schur coefficients if and only if its $Q$-coordinates are integral. The Boolean classification also determines the convex hull of the Schur-positive Boolean points with $Q_{n,1}$-coordinate $1$. We compute its Ehrhart polynomial and volume, prove its integer decomposition property, and determine the Hilbert basis of its cone. For $n\ge18$, we prove that setting the coefficient of $s_{(n)}$ or $s_{(1^n)}$ equal to $0$ or $1$ defines a facet of the section of the Schur-positive cone with $Q_{n,1}$-coordinate $1$. The positivity results and coordinate formulas also yield inequalities for major-index residue multiplicities.
Fence Posets, Good Gradings and Frobenius Maximal Parabolics
Let $\mathfrak L$ be a Frobenius maximal parabolic subalgebra of $\mathfrak{sl}_n$. For any $F\in\mathfrak L^*$ for which the Kirillov form $B_F(x,y)=F([x,y])$ is non-degenerate, let $\widehat F$ denote the associated principal element. We prove that the multiplicities of the eigenvalues of $\operatorname{ad}_{\widehat F}$ on $\mathfrak L$ form a unimodal sequence symmetric about $\frac12$. We also prove that the multiplicities of the eigenvalues of $\operatorname{ad}_{\widehat F}$ on $\mathfrak{gl}_n$ form a unimodal sequence symmetric about $0$. The proof relates the ranked meander associated to $\mathfrak L$ to the order ideals of a related fence poset through Panyushev reduction. The known unimodality of the rank polynomial of the fence poset implies that of the meander, which in turn determines a good grading of $\mathfrak{gl}_n$ in the sense of Elashvili and Kac. We prove that this grading coincides with that induced by the principal element and that the pyramid associated to this grading may be filled in such a way that its good element $e$ lies in $\mathfrak L$. The two unimodality results then follow from the injectivity properties of $\operatorname{ad}_e$ coming from the good grading and the duality induced by the bilinear form $B_F$.

Mutation of theta functions
We give an account of mutation of theta functions in cluster scattering diagrams, starting with a notion of mutation that is related to, but different from, the notion of mutation defined by Gross, Hacking, Keel, and Kontsevich. This different approach to mutation leads to several applications. Three of the applications simplify the process of computing structure constants for multiplication of theta functions, and these are used in another paper on cluster scattering diagrams of affine type. Notable in these three applications is the appearance of mutation symmetries and dominance regions. The other two applications have to do with pointed reduced bases, a variation on the pointed bases of Fan Qin. We give a characterization of pointed reduced bases analogous to Qin's characterization of pointed bases. All of these applications take place in a version of Gross, Hacking, Keel, and Kontsevich's canonical algebra that can be constructed for an arbitrary exchange matrix.

The $E_6$ Restricted Hyperplane Arrangement and its $E_7$ Shadow: Weyl Transport on a Minuscule Bruhat Poset
We study the restricted fan cut inside the dual fundamental Weyl chamber by the weights of a $27$-dimensional minuscule representation of $E_6$; the two such representations are dual and give the same arrangement. Only $11$ of the $27$ weights have kernels meeting its interior, and we prove that they determine the entire fan. It has exactly $14$ chambers and $18$ extreme rays, every chamber is a six-dimensional simplicial cone, and we determine all facets, rays, and incidence relations. The chamber count was previously obtained by Diaconescu and Entin; the simplicial structure, extreme rays, and incidence data are new. The geometry of the $27$ lines on a cubic surface then explains and organizes the resulting chamber architecture. We also enumerate all faces, compute both characteristic polynomials---the arrangement is not supersolvable---together with lattice indices and projective chamber volumes, and describe the oriented matroid. Our main result is representation-theoretic. A distinguished $14$-element visible subposet of the minuscule $\mathbf{56}$ of $E_7$, defined entirely inside $E_7$, has Hasse diagram equal to the chamber adjacency graph of the $E_6$ arrangement. Three canonical $7+7$ splittings of it, of types $A_7$, $D_7$, and $E_7$, are the visible traces of Levi-center $\mathfrak{u}(1)$-charge decompositions of the $\mathbf{56}$ and reproduce the three level-$8$ decompositions on the $E_6$ side. More strongly, the simple-root labels on its covers, transported by minimal-length coset representatives, recover chamber by chamber all six facets and, globally, the $11$ active weight hyperplanes and the boundary walls of the dual Weyl chamber. Thus the $E_7$ shadow records not merely the chamber graph but, once matched with the independent $E_6$ classification, the full local wall architecture of $I(E_6,\mathbf{27})$.

Weak Bruhat interval modules of the 0-Hecke algebras for stable Grothendieck polynomials
For a partition $λ$, let $G_λ^{(β)}$ be the stable $β$-Grothendieck polynomial attached to $λ$. Each homogeneous component of the $β= 1$ specialization $G_λ^{(1)}$ is Schur-positive and hence positive in the fundamental basis of quasisymmetric functions. For $m\ge|λ|$, let $G_{λ,m}^{(1)}$ be the homogeneous degree $m$ component of $G_λ^{(1)}$. In this paper, we first give a direct proof of an expansion of $G_{λ,m}^{(1)}$ in the fundamental basis in terms of standard set-valued tableaux. We then use these tableaux as a basis to define a module of the $0$-Hecke algebra and show that the quasisymmetric characteristic of the resulting module is $G_{λ,m}^{(1)}$. We further show that this module decomposes as a direct sum of weak Bruhat interval modules.
