Hall-Littlewood polynomials, affine Schubert series, and lattice enumeration
We introduce multivariate rational generating series called Hall-Littlewood-Schubert ($\mathsf{HLS}_n$) series. They are defined in terms of polynomials related to Hall-Littlewood polynomials and semistandard Young tableaux. We show that $\mathsf{HLS}_n$ series provide solutions to a range of enumeration problems upon judicious substitutions of their variables. These include the problem to enumerate sublattices of a $p$-adic lattice according to the elementary divisor types of their intersections with the members of a complete flag of reference in the ambient lattice. This is an affine analog of the stratification of Grassmannians by Schubert varieties. Other substitutions of $\mathsf{HLS}_n$ series yield new formulae for Hecke series and $p$-adic integrals associated with symplectic $p$-adic groups, and combinatorially defined quiver representation zeta functions. $\mathsf{HLS}_n$ series are $q$-analogs of Hilbert series of Stanley-Reisner rings associated with posets arising from parabolic quotients of Coxeter groups of type $\mathsf{B}$ with the Bruhat order. Special values of coarsened $\mathsf{HLS}_n$ series yield analogs of the classical Littlewood identity for the generating functions of Schur polynomials.
Equivariant geometry of symmetric quiver orbit closures
We unify problems about the equivariant geometry of symmetric quiver representation varieties, in the finite type setting, with the corresponding problems for symmetric varieties $GL(n)/K$ where $K$ is an orthogonal or symplectic group. In particular, we translate results about singularities of orbit closures; combinatorics of orbit closure containment; and torus equivariant cohomology and K-theory between these classes of varieties. We obtain these results by constructing explicit embeddings with nice properties of homogeneous fiber bundles over type $A$ symmetric quiver representation varieties into symmetric varieties.
Hikita conjecture for classical Lie algebras
Let $G$ be $Sp_{2n}$, $SO_{2n}$ or $SO_{2n+1}$ and let $G^\vee$ be its Langlands dual group. Barbasch and Vogan based on earlier work of Lusztig and Spaltenstein, define a duality map $D$ that sends nilpotent orbits $\mathbb{O}_{e^\vee} \subset \mathfrak{g}^\vee$ to special nilpotent orbits $\mathbb{O}_e\subset \mathfrak{g}$. In a work by Losev, Mason-Brown and Matvieievskyi, an upgraded version $\tilde{D}$ of this duality is considered, called the refined BVLS duality. $\tilde{D}(\mathbb{O}_{e^\vee})$ is a $G$-equivariant cover $\tilde{\mathbb{O}}_e$ of $\mathbb{O}_e$. Let $S_{e^\vee}$ be the nilpotent Slodowy slice of the orbit $\mathbb{O}_{e^\vee}$. The two varieties $X^\vee= S_{e^\vee}$ and $X=$ Spec$(\mathbb{C}[\tilde{\mathbb{O}}_e])$ are expected to be symplectic dual to each other. In this context, a version of the Hikita conjecture predicts an isomorphism between the cohomology ring of the Springer fiber $\mathcal{B}_{e^\vee}$ and the ring of regular functions on the scheme-theoretic fixed point $X^T$ for some torus $T$. This paper verifies the isomorphism for certain pairs $e$ and $e^\vee$. These cases are expected to cover almost all instances in which the Hikita conjecture holds when $e^\vee$ regular in a Levi $\mathfrak{l}^\vee\subset \mathfrak{g}^\vee$. Our results in these cases follow from the relations of three different types of objects: generalized coinvariant algebras, equivariant cohomology rings, and functions on scheme-theoretic intersections. We also give evidence for the Hikita conjecture when $e^\vee$ is distinguished.

In this paper, we solve a classical counting problem for non-degenerate quadratic forms defined on a vector space in odd characteristic; given a subspace $π$, we determine the number of non-singular subspaces that are trivially intersecting with $π$ and span a non-singular subspace with $π$. Lower bounds for the quantity of such pairs where $π$ is non-singular were first studied in `Glasby, Niemeyer, Praeger (Finite Fields Appl., 2022)', which was later improved for even-dimensional subspaces in `Glasby, Ihringer, Mattheus (Des. Codes Cryptogr., 2023)' and generalised in `Glasby, Niemeyer, Praeger (Linear Algebra Appl., 2022)'. The explicit formulae, which allow us to give the exact proportion and improve the known lower bounds were derived in the symplectic and Hermitian case in `De Boeck and Van de Voorde (Linear Algebra Appl. 2024)'. This paper deals with the more complicated quadratic case.
On Geometry and Combinatorics of Finite Classical Polar Spaces
Polar spaces over finite fields are fundamental in combinatorial geometry. The concept of polar space was firstly introduced by F. Veldkamp who gave a system of 10 axioms in the spirit of Universal Algebra. Later the axioms were simplified by J. Tits, who introduced the concept of subspaces. Later on, from the point of view of incidence geometry, axioms of polar spaces were also given by F. Buekenhout and E. Shult in 1974. The reader can find the three systems of axioms of polar spaces in Appendix A. Examples of polar spaces are the so called Finite classical polar spaces, i.e. incidence structures arising from quadrics, symplectic spaces and Hermitian varieties, which are in correspondance with reflexive sesquilinear forms. It is still an open problem to show whether or not classical polar spaces are the only example of finite polar spaces.
Nowadays, some research problems related to finite classical polar space are: existence of spreads and ovoids; existence of regular systems and $m$-ovoids; upper or lower bounds on partial spreads and partial ovoids. Moreover, polar spaces are in relation with combinatorial objects as regular graphs, block designs and association schemes.
In this Ph.D. Thesis we investigate the geometry of finite classical polar spaces, giving contributions to the above problems. The thesis is organized as follows. Part I is more focused on the geometric aspects of polar spaces, while in Part II some combinatorial objects are introduced such as regular graphs, association schemes and combinatorial designs. Finally Appendix B, C and D are dedicated to give more details on, respectively, maximal curves, linear codes and combinatorial designs, giving useful results and definitions.

A digraph is $s$-arc-transitive if its automorphism group is transitive on directed paths with $s$ edges, that is, on $s$-arcs. Although infinite families of finite $s$-arc transitive digraphs of arbitrary valency were constructed by the third author in 1989, existence of a vertex-primitive $2$-arc-transitive digraph was not known until an infinite family was constructed by the second author with Li and Xia in 2017. This led to a conjecture by the second author and Xia in 2018 that, for a finite vertex-primitive $s$-arc-transitive digraph, $s$ is at most $2$, together with their proof that it is sufficient to prove the conjecture for digraphs with an almost simple group of automorphisms. This paper confirms the conjecture for finite symplectic groups.
Chern-Simons theories with defects, Rogers-Ramanujan type functions and eta-products
We study the line defect half-indices of 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric Chern-Simons (CS) theories with (special)unitary, symplectic, orthogonal and exceptional gauge groups. We find that they have several beautiful infinite product $q$-series expressions in terms of Ramanujan's general theta function. For the theories with fundamental chiral multiplets, the pairs of the Neumann half-indices and one-point functions of the fundamental Wilson lines form a basis for the line defect indices in terms of the Rogers-Ramanujan type functions. Furthermore, the theories with an adjoint chiral admit the expressions as the eta-products. In particular, for the $SU(N)_{-2N}$ CS theory, there is a one-to-one correspondence between the BPS boundary local operators and the $N$-core partitions.
A Characterization of Lines in Finite Lie Incidence Geometries of Classical Type

We consider any classical Grassmannian geometry $Γ$; that is, any projective or polar Grassmann space. Suppose every line in $Γ$ contains $s+1$ points. Then we classify all sets of points in $Γ$ of cardinality $s+1$, with the property, that no object of opposite type in the corresponding building, is opposite every point of the set. It turns out that such sets are either lines, or hyperbolic lines in symplectic residues, or ovoids in large symplectic subquadrangles of rank 2 residues in characteristic 2. This is a far-reaching extension of a famous and fundamental result of Bose & Burton from the 1960s. We describe a new way to classify geometric lines in finite classical geometries and how our results correspond to blocking sets.

We study pairs of matrices $A,B\in GL_n({\mathbb C})$ such that the eigenvalues of $A$, of $B$ and of the product $AB$ are specified in advance. We show that the space of such pairs $(A,B)$ under simultaneous conjugation has dimension $(n-1)(n-2)$, and give an explicit parameterization.
More generally let $Σ$ be a surface of genus $g$ with $k$ punctures. We find a parameterization of the space $Ω_{g,k,n}$ of flat $GL_n({\mathbb C})$-structures on $Σ$ whose holonomies around the punctures have prescribed eigenvalues.
We show furthermore that, for $3\le k\le 2g+6$ (or $3\le k\le 9$ if $g=1$, or $3\le k$ if $g=0$), the space $Ω_{g,k,n}$ has an explicit symplectic structure and an associated Liouville integrable system, equivalent to a leaf of a Goncharov-Kenyon dimer integrable system.

A new heuristic approach for contextuality degree estimates and its four- to six-qubit portrayals

We introduce and describe a new heuristic method for finding an upper bound on the degree of contextuality and the corresponding unsatisfied part of a quantum contextual configuration with three-element contexts (i.e., lines) located in a multi-qubit symplectic polar space of order two. While the previously used method based on a SAT solver was limited to three qubits, this new method is much faster and more versatile, enabling us to also handle four- to six-qubit cases. The four-qubit unsatisfied configurations we found are quite remarkable. That of an elliptic quadric features 315 lines and has in its core three copies of the split Cayley hexagon of order two having a Heawood-graph-underpinned geometry in common. That of a hyperbolic quadric also has 315 lines but, as a point-line incidence structure, is isomorphic to the dual $\mathcal{DW}(5,2)$ of $\mathcal{W}(5,2)$. Finally, an unsatisfied configuration with 1575 lines associated with all the lines/contexts of the four-qubit space contains a distinguished $\mathcal{DW}(5,2)$ centered on a point-plane incidence graph of PG$(3,2)$. The corresponding configurations found in the five-qubit space exhibit a considerably higher degree of complexity, except for a hyperbolic quadric, whose 6975 unsatisfied contexts are compactified around the point-hyperplane incidence graph of PG$(4,2)$. The most remarkable unsatisfied patterns discovered in the six-qubit space are a couple of disjoint split Cayley hexagons (for the full space) and a subgeometry underpinned by the complete bipartite graph $K_{7,7}$ (for a hyperbolic quadric).
The Symplectic Schur Process

We define a measure on tuples of partitions, called the symplectic Schur process, that should be regarded as the right analogue of the Schur process of Okounkov-Reshetikhin for the Cartan type C. The weights of our measure include factors that are universal symplectic characters, as well as a novel family of "Down-Up Schur functions" that we define and for which we prove new identities of Cauchy-Littlewood-type. Our main structural result is that the point process corresponding to the symplectic Schur process is determinantal and we find an explicit correlation kernel. We also present dynamics that preserve the family of symplectic Schur processes and explore an alternative sampling scheme, based on the Berele insertion algorithm, in a special case. Finally, we study the asymptotics of the Berele insertion process and find explicit formulas for the limit shape and fluctuations near the bulk and the edge. One of the limit regimes leads to a new kernel that resembles the symmetric Pearcey kernel.

The goal of this paper is to extend the quiver Grassmannian description of certain degenerations of Grassmann varieties to the symplectic case. We introduce a symplectic version of quiver Grassmannians studied in our previous papers and prove a number of results on these projective algebraic varieties. First, we construct a cellular decomposition of the symplectic quiver Grassmannians in question and develop combinatorics needed to compute Euler characteristics and Poincaré polynomials. Second, we show that the number of irreducible components of our varieties coincides with the Euler characteristic of the classical symplectic Grassmannians. Third, we describe the automorphism groups of the underlying symplectic quiver representations and show that the cells are the orbits of this group. Lastly, we provide an embedding into the affine flag varieties for the affine symplectic group.

In this paper we relate a well-known in symplectic geometry compactification of the space of symmetric bilinear forms considered as a chart of the Lagrangian Grassmannian to the specific compactifications of the space of electrical networks in the disc obtained in \cite{L}, \cite{CGS} and \cite{BGKT}. In particular, we state an explicit connection between these works and describe some of the combinatorics developed there in the language of symplectic geometry. We also show that the combinatorics of the concordance vectors forces the uniqueness of the symplectic form, such that corresponding points of the Grassmannian are isotropic. We define a notion of Lagrangian concordance which provides a construction of the compactification of the space of electrical networks in the positive part of the Lagrangian Grassmannian bypassing the construction from \cite{L}.
Ramsey numbers and extremal structures in polar spaces
We use $p$-rank bounds on partial ovoids and the classical bounds on Ramsey numbers to obtain upper bounds on the size of partial $m$-ovoids in finite classical polar spaces. These bounds imply non-existence of $m$-ovoids for new infinite families of polar spaces. We also give a probabilistic construction of large partial $m$-ovoids when $m$ grows linearly with the rank of the polar space.
In the special case of the symplectic spaces over the binary field, we prove an equivalence between partial $m$-ovoids and a generalisation of Oddtown families from extremal set theory that has been studied under the name of $m$-nearly orthogonal sets. We give a new construction for large partial $2$-ovoids in these spaces and thus $2$-nearly orthogonal sets over the binary field. This construction uses triangle-free graphs associated to certain BCH codes whose complements have low $2$-rank and it gives an asymptotic improvement over the previous best construction. We give another construction of triangle-free graphs using a binary projective cap, which has low complementary rank over the reals. This improves the bounds in the recently introduced rank-Ramsey problem and it gives better constructions of large partial $m$-ovoids for $m > 2$ in the binary symplectic space.
Quantum $K$-theory of Lagrangian Grassmannian via parabolic Peterson isomorphism
We study Schubert calculus in the torus-equivariant quantum $K$-ring of the Lagrangian Grassmannian $\mathrm{LG}(n)$. Our main tool is the $K$-theoretic Peterson map due to Kato. The map is from the (localized) equivariant $K$-homology ring $K_{*}^{T}(\mathrm{Gr}_{G})$ of the affine Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}_{G}$ of the symplectic group $G=\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$ to the (localized) torus-equivariant quantum $K$-ring $QK_{T}(\mathrm{LG}(n))$. We determine explicitly the kernel of this map.

We review the notion of symplectic duality earlier introduced in the context of topological recursion. We show that the transformation of symplectic duality can be expressed as a composition of $x-y$ dualities in a broader context of log topological recursion. As a corollary, we establish nice properties of symplectic duality: various convenient explicit formulas, invertibility, group property, compatibility with topological recursion and KP integrability. As an application of these properties, we get a new and uniform proof of topological recursion for large families of weighted double Hurwitz numbers; this encompasses and significantly extends all previously known results on this matter.
Divisible design graphs from the symplectic graph

A divisible design graph is a graph whose adjacency matrix is an incidence matrix of a (group) divisible design. Divisible design graphs were introduced in 2011 as a generalization of $(v,k,λ)$-graphs. Here we describe four new infinite families that can be obtained from the symplectic strongly regular graph $Sp(2e,q)$ ($q$ odd, $e\geq 2$) by modifying the set of edges. To achieve this we need two kinds of spreads in $PG(2e-1,q)$ with respect to the associated symplectic form: the symplectic spread consisting of totally isotropic subspaces and, when $e=2$, a special spread consisting of lines which are not totally isotropic. Existence of symplectic spreads is known, but the construction of a special spread for every odd prime power $q$ is a major result of this paper. We have included relevant back ground from finite geometry, and when $q=3,5$ and $7$ we worked out all possible special spreads.
