Some positive differences of products of Schur functions
The product $s_μs_ν$ of two Schur functions is one of the most famous examples of a Schur-positive function, i.e. a symmetric function which, when written as a linear combination of Schur functions, has all positive coefficients.
We ask when expressions of the form $s_λs_ρ- s_μs_ν$ are Schur-positive. This general question seems to be a difficult one, but a conjecture of Fomin, Fulton, Li and Poon says that it is the case at least when $λ$ and $ρ$ are obtained from $μ$ and $ν$ by redistributing the parts of $μ$ and $ν$ in a specific, yet natural, way. We show that their conjecture is true in several significant cases. We also formulate a skew-shape extension of their conjecture, and prove several results which serve as evidence in favor of this extension. Finally, we take a more global view by studying two classes of partially ordered sets suggested by these questions.

Cylindric skew Schur functions, which are a generalisation of skew Schur functions, arise naturally in the study of P-partitions. Also, recent work of A. Postnikov shows they have a strong connection with a problem of considerable current interest: that of finding a combinatorial proof of the non-negativity of the 3-point Gromov-Witten invariants. After explaining these motivations, we study cylindric skew Schur functions from the point of view of Schur-positivity. Using a result of I. Gessel and C. Krattenthaler, we generalise a formula of A. Bertram, I. Ciocan-Fontanine and W. Fulton, thus giving an expansion of an arbitrary cylindric skew Schur function in terms of skew Schur functions. While we show that no non-trivial cylindric skew Schur functions are Schur-positive, we conjecture that this can be reconciled using the new concept of cylindric Schur-positivity.

In the open problem session of the FPSAC'03, R.P.Stanley gave an open problem. The purpose of this paper is to give a proof of this open problem. At the end of this paper we present certain corollaries involving the Big Schur functions and some polynomials arising from the Macdonald polynomials, which generalize Stanley's open problem.

We introduce the notion of the cutting strip of an outside decomposition of a skew shape, and show that cutting strips are in one-to-one correspondence with outside decompositions for a given skew shape. Outside decompositions are introduced by Hamel and Goulden and are used to give an identity for the skew Schur function that unifies the determinantal expressions for the skew Schur functions including the Jacobi-Trudi determinant, its dual, the Giambelli determinant and the rim ribbon determinant due to Lascoux and Pragacz. Using cutting strips, one obtains a formula for the number of outside decompositions of a given skew shape. Moreover, one can define the basic transformations which we call the twist transformation among cutting strips, and derive a transformation theorem for the determinantal formula of Hamel and Goulden. The special case of the transformation theorem for the Giambelli identity and the rim ribbon identity was obtained by Lascoux and Pragacz. Our transformation theorem also applies to the supersymmetric skew Schur function.

We define an equivalence relation on integer compositions and show that two ribbon Schur functions are identical if and only if their defining compositions are equivalent in this sense. This equivalence is completely determined by means of a factorization for compositions: equivalent compositions have factorizations that differ only by reversing some of the terms. As an application, we can derive identities on certain Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. Finally, we consider the cone of symmetric functions having a nonnnegative representation in terms of the fundamental quasisymmetric basis. We show the Schur functions are among the extremes of this cone and conjecture its facets are in bijection with the equivalence classes of compositions.

The k-Young lattice Y^k is a weak subposet of the Young lattice containing partitions whose first part is bounded by an integer k>0. The Y^k poset was introduced in connection with generalized Schur functions and later shown to be isomorphic to the weak order on the quotient of the affine symmetric group by a maximal parabolic subgroup. We prove a number of properties for $Y^k$ including that the covering relation is preserved when elements are translated by rectangular partitions with hook-length $k$. We highlight the order ideal generated by an $m\times n$ rectangular shape. This order ideal, L^k(m,n), reduces to L(m,n) for large k, and we prove it is isomorphic to the induced subposet of L(m,n) whose vertex set is restricted to elements with no more than k-m+1 parts smaller than m. We provide explicit formulas for the number of elements and the rank-generating function of L^k(m,n). We conclude with unimodality conjectures involving q-binomial coefficients and discuss how implications connect to recent work on sieved q-binomial coefficients.

A Unified Approach to Combinatorial Formulas for Schubert Polynomials

Schubert polynomials were introduced in the context of the geometry of flag varieties. This paper investigates some of the connections not yet understood between several combinatorial structures for the construction of Schubert polynomials; we also present simplifications in some of the existing approaches to this area. We designate certain line diagrams known as rc-graphs as the main structure. The other structures in the literature we study include: semistandard Young tableaux, Kohnert diagrams, and balanced labelings of the diagram of a permutation. The main tools in our investigation are certain operations on rc-graphs, which correspond to the coplactic operations on tableaux, and thus define a crystal graph structure on rc-graphs; a new definition of these operations is presented. One application of these operations is a straightforward, purely combinatorial proof of a recent formula (due to Buch, Kresch, Tamvakis, and Yong), which expresses Schubert polynomials in terms of products of Schur polynomials. In spite of the fact that it refers to many objects and results related to them, the paper is mostly self-contained.
Tableaux on k+1-cores, reduced words for affine permutations, and k-Schur expansions

The $k$-Young lattice $Y^k$ is a partial order on partitions with no part larger than $k$. This weak subposet of the Young lattice originated from the study of the $k$-Schur functions(atoms) $s_λ^{(k)}$, symmetric functions that form a natural basis of the space spanned by homogeneous functions indexed by $k$-bounded partitions. The chains in the $k$-Young lattice are induced by a Pieri-type rule experimentally satisfied by the $k$-Schur functions. Here, using a natural bijection between $k$-bounded partitions and $k+1$-cores, we establish an algorithm for identifying chains in the $k$-Young lattice with certain tableaux on $k+1$ cores. This algorithm reveals that the $k$-Young lattice is isomorphic to the weak order on the quotient of the affine symmetric group $\tilde S_{k+1}$ by a maximal parabolic subgroup. From this, the conjectured $k$-Pieri rule implies that the $k$-Kostka matrix connecting the homogeneous basis $\{h_\la\}_{\la\in\CY^k}$ to $\{s_\la^{(k)}\}_{\la\in\CY^k}$ may now be obtained by counting appropriate classes of tableaux on $k+1$-cores. This suggests that the conjecturally positive $k$-Schur expansion coefficients for Macdonald polynomials (reducing to $q,t$-Kostka polynomials for large $k$) could be described by a $q,t$-statistic on these tableaux, or equivalently on reduced words for affine permutations.

The shifted Schur measure introduced by Tracy and Widom is a measure on the set of all strict partitions, which is defined by Schur $Q$-functions. The main aim of this paper is to calculate the correlation function of this measure, which is given by a pfaffian. As an application, we prove that a limit distribution of $λ_j$'s with respect to a shifted version of the Plancherel measure for symmetric groups is identical with the corresponding distribution of the original Plancherel measure. Further we give expressions of the mean value and the variance of the size of a partition with respect to the measure defined by Hall-Littlewood functions.

The initial purpose of this paper is to provide a combinatorial proof of the minor summation formula of Pfaffians based on the lattice path method. There we related Plücker relations with the minor summation formula of Pfaffians to simplify its proof by lattice paths. The second aim is to find a various applications of the minor summation formula. First we studied a variant of the Sundquist formula established in J. Alg. Combin. {\bf 5} (1996). Next we gave a simple proof of Kawanaka's formula concerning a $q$-series identity involving Schur functions in Osaka J. Math. {\bf 36} (1999). We also establish a certain identity similar to the Kawanaka formula, and give a combinatorial proof of the determinant version of his formula in Osaka J. Math. {\bf 38} (2001).

We give a basis for the space V spanned by the lowest degree part \hat{s}_λof the expansion of the Schur symmetric functions s_λin terms of power sums, where we define the degree of the power sum p_i to be 1. In particular, the dimension of the subspace V_n spanned by those \hat{s}_λfor which λis a partition of n is equal to the number of partitions of n whose parts differ by at least 2. We also show that a symmetric function closely related to \hat{s}_λhas the same coefficients when expanded in terms of power sums or augmented monomial symmetric functions. Proofs are based on the theory of minimal border strip decompositions of Young diagrams.

Lascoux, Leclerc and Thibon have introduced symmetric functions which are spin and weight generating functions for ribbon tableaux. This article is aimed at studying these `ribbon functions' in analogy with Schur functions. In particular we will describe ribbon Pieri and Murnagham-Nakayama formulae, a ribbon Cauchy identity and an algebra involution which `conjugates' the ribbon functions. We will study these functions in the context of the action of the Heisenberg algebra on the Fock space representation of the quantum affine algebra U_q(sl_n)^, discovered by Kashiwara, Miwa and Stern. We will also connect our formulae with the ribbon insertion of Shimozono and White, giving combinatorial proofs for the domino n=2 case.

Many combinatorial generating functions can be expressed as combinations of symmetric functions, or extracted as sub-series and specializations from such combinations. Gessel has outlined a large class of symmetric functions for which the resulting generating functions are D-finite. We extend Gessel's work by providing algorithms that compute differential equations these generating functions satisfy in the case they are given as a scalar product of symmetric functions in Gessel's class. Examples of applications to k-regular graphs and Young tableaux with repeated entries are given. Asymptotic estimates are a natural application of our method, which we illustrate on the same model of Young tableaux. We also derive a seemingly new formula for the Kronecker product of the sum of Schur functions with itself.

The Narayana numbers are $N(n,k) = {1 \over n}{n \choose k}{n \choose {k+1}}$. There are several natural statistics on Dyck paths with a distribution given by N(n,k). We show the equidistribution of Narayana statistics by computing the flag h-vector of $J({\bf 2} \times {\bf n})$ in different ways. In the process we discover new Narayana statistics and provide co-statistics for which the Narayana statistics in question have a distribution given by Fürlinger and Hofbauers q-Narayana numbers. We also interpret the h-vector in terms of semi-standard Young tableaux, which enables us to express the q-Narayana numbers in terms of Schur functions.
Some remarks on sign-balanced and maj-balanced posets

Let P be a poset with elements 1,2,...,n. We say that P is sign-balanced if exactly half the linear extensions of P (regarded as permutations of 1,2,...,n) are even permutations, i.e., have an even number of inversions. This concept first arose in the work of Frank Ruskey, who was interested in the efficient generation of all linear extensions of P. We survey a number of techniques for showing that posets are sign-balanced, and more generally, computing their "imbalance." There are close connections with domino tilings and, for certain posets, a "domino generalization" of Schur functions due to Carre and Leclerc. We also say that P is maj-balanced if exactly half the linear extensions of P have even major index. We discuss some similarities and some differences between sign-balanced and maj-balanced posets.

Let $A$ be a commutative $k$-algebra over a field of $k$ and $Ξ$ a linear operator defined on $A$. We define a family of $A$-valued invariants $Ψ$ for finite rooted forests by a recurrent algorithm using the operator $Ξ$ and show that the invariant $Ψ$ distinguishes rooted forests if (and only if) it distinguishes rooted trees $T$, and if (and only if) it is {\it finer} than the quantity $α(T)=|\text{Aut}(T)|$ of rooted trees $T$. We also consider the generating function $U(q)=\sum_{n=1}^\infty U_n q^n$ with $U_n =\sum_{T\in \bT_n} \frac 1{α(T)} Ψ(T)$, where $\bT_n$ is the set of rooted trees with $n$ vertices. We show that the generating function $U(q)$ satisfies the equation $Ξ\exp U(q)= q^{-1} U(q)$. Consequently, we get a recurrent formula for $U_n$ $(n\geq 1)$, namely, $U_1=Ξ(1)$ and $U_n =ΞS_{n-1}(U_1, U_2, >..., U_{n-1})$ for any $n\geq 2$, where $S_n(x_1, x_2, ...)$ $(n\in \bN)$ are the elementary Schur polynomials. We also show that the (strict) order polynomials and two well known quasi-symmetric function invariants of rooted forests are in the family of invariants $Ψ$ and derive some consequences about these well-known invariants from our general results on $Ψ$. Finally, we generalize the invariant $Ψ$ to labeled planar forests and discuss its certain relations with the Hopf algebra $\mathcal H_{P, R}^D$ in \cite{F} spanned by labeled planar forests.
