Hook coefficients of chromatic functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
The chromatic symmetric function of a graph is a generalization of the chromatic polynomial. The key motivation for studying the structure of a chromatic symmetric function is to answer positivity conjectures by Stanley in 1995 and Gasharov in 1996. As a symmetric function one can write the chromatic symmetric function in the basis of Schur functions. In this paper we address the positivity of the Schur coefficients when the parameter of the Schur function is a hook shape. Furthermore, when a graph is the incomparability graph of a poset with specific properties we construct a correspondence between acyclic orientations of the graph and P-tableaux with a hook shape.

A Generalization of Tokuyama's Formula to the Hall-Littlewood Polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
A theorem due to Tokuyama expresses Schur polynomials in terms of Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns, providing a deformation of the Weyl character formula and two other classical results, Stanley's formula for the Schur $q$-polynomials and Gelfand's parametrization for the Schur polynomial. We generalize Tokuyama's formula to the Hall-Littlewood polynomials by extending Tokuyama's statistics. Our result, in addition to specializing to Tokuyama's result and the aforementioned classical results, also yields connections to the monomial symmetric function and a new deformation of Stanley's formula.

Modules of the 0-Hecke algebra and quasisymmetric Schur functions
Published in Adv. Math. 285:1025--1065 (2015) • View Publication • BIB
We begin by deriving an action of the 0-Hecke algebra on standard reverse composition tableaux and use it to discover 0-Hecke modules whose quasisymmetric characteristics are the natural refinements of Schur functions known as quasisymmetric Schur functions. Furthermore, we classify combinatorially which of these 0-Hecke modules are indecomposable. From here, we establish that the natural equivalence relation arising from our 0-Hecke action has equivalence classes that are isomorphic to subintervals of the weak Bruhat order on the symmetric group. Focussing on the equivalence classes containing a canonical tableau we discover a new basis for the Hopf algebra of quasisymmetric functions, and use the cardinality of these equivalence classes to establish new enumerative results on truncated shifted reverse tableau studied by Panova and Adin-King-Roichman. Generalizing our 0-Hecke action to one on skew standard reverse composition tableaux, we derive 0-Hecke modules whose quasisymmetric characteristics are the skew quasisymmetric Schur functions of Bessenrodt et al. This enables us to prove a restriction rule that reflects the coproduct formula for quasisymmetric Schur functions, which in turn yields a quasisymmetric branching rule analogous to the classical branching rule for Schur functions.

A Murnaghan-Nakayama Rule For Noncommutative Schur Functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove a Murnaghan-Nakayama rule for the noncommutative Schur functions introduced by Bessenrodt, Luoto and van Willigenburg. In other words, we give an explicit combinatorial formula for expanding the product of a noncommutative power sum symmetric function and a noncommutative Schur function in terms of noncommutative Schur functions. In direct analogy to the classical Murnaghan-Nakayama rule, the summands are computed using a noncommutative analogue of border strips, and have coefficients equal to 1 or -1 determined by the height of these border strips. The rule is proved by interpreting the noncommutative Pieri rules for noncommutative Schur functions in terms of box-adding operators on compositions.
Factorial P- and Q-Schur functions represent equivariant quantum Schubert classes
Published in Osaka J. Math. 53(3): 591-619 (July 2016) • Search Publication
We find presentations by generators and relations for the equivariant quantum cohomology rings of the maximal isotropic Grassmannians of types B,C and D, and we find polynomial representatives for the Schubert classes in these rings. These representatives are given in terms of the same Pfaffian formulas which appear in the theory of factorial $P$- and $Q$-Schur functions. After specializing to equivariant cohomology, we interpret the resulting presentations and Pfaffian formulas in terms of Chern classes of tautological bundles.

Combinatorial Interpretation of the Scalar Products of State Vectors of Integrable Models
Published in J. Math. Sci., vol. 200, no. 6, (2014), 662-670 • View Publication • BIB
The representation of the Bethe wave functions of certain integrable models via the Schur functions allows to apply the well-developed theory of the symmetric functions to the calculation of the thermal correlation functions. The algebraic relations arising in the calculation of the scalar products and the correlation functions are based on the Binet-Cauchy formula for the Schur functions. We provide a combinatorial interpretation of the formula for the scalar products of the Bethe state-vectors in terms of nests of the self-avoiding lattice paths constituting the so-called watermelon configurations. The interpretation proposed is, in its turn, related to the enumeration of the boxed plane partitions.

Correlation Functions of XX0 Heisenberg Chain, q-Binomial Determinants, and Random Walks
Published in Nuclear Physics B 879 [FS] (2014) 268-291 • View Publication • BIB
The XX0 Heisenberg model on a cyclic chain is considered. The representation of the Bethe wave functions via the Schur functions allows to apply the well-developed theory of the symmetric functions to the calculation of the thermal correlation functions. The determinantal expressions of the form-factors and of the thermal correlation functions are obtained. The q-binomial determinants enable the connection of the form-factors with the generating functions both of boxed plane partitions and of self-avoiding lattice paths. The asymptotical behavior of the thermal correlation functions is studied in the limit of low temperature provided that the characteristic parameters of the system are large enough.

Correlation Functions of the Schur Process Through Macdonald Difference Operators
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A 131, 88-118 (2015) • View Publication • BIB
Introduced by Okounkov and Reshetikhin, the Schur process is known to be a determinantal point process, meaning that its correlation functions are minors of a single correlation kernel matrix. Previously, this was derived using determinantal expressions for the skew-Schur polynomials. In this paper we obtain this result in a different way, using the fact that the Schur polynomials are eigenfunctions of Macdonald difference operators.

Cyclic Hodge Integrals and Loop Schur Functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
We conjecture an evaluation of three-partition cyclic Hodge integrals in terms of loop Schur functions. Our formula implies the orbifold Gromov-Witten/Donaldson-Thomas correspondence for toric Calabi-Yau threefolds with transverse type A singularities. We prove the formula in the case where one of the partitions is empty, and thus establish the orbifold Gromov- Witten/Donaldson-Thomas correspondence for local toric surfaces with transverse type A singularities.

Vertex operators, Weyl determinant formulae and Littlewood duality
Published in Ann. Combin. 19 (2015), no.3, 427--442 • View Publication • BIB
Vertex operator realizations of symplectic and orthogonal Schur functions are studied and expanded. New proofs of determinant identities of irreducible characters for the symplectic and orthogonal groups are given. We also give a new proof of the duality between the universal orthogonal and symplectic Schur functions using vertex operators.

Subtraction-free complexity, cluster transformations, and spanning trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
Subtraction-free computational complexity is the version of arithmetic circuit complexity that allows only three operations: addition, multiplication, and division. We use cluster transformations to design efficient subtraction-free algorithms for computing Schur functions and their skew, double, and supersymmetric analogues, thereby generalizing earlier results by P. Koev. We develop such algorithms for computing generating functions of spanning trees, both directed and undirected. A comparison to the lower bound due to M. Jerrum and M. Snir shows that in subtraction-free computations, "division can be exponentially powerful." Finally, we give a simple example where the gap between ordinary and subtraction-free complexity is exponential.

Comparing skew Schur functions: a quasisymmetric perspective
Published in J. Combin., 5 (1) (2014) 51-85 • View Publication • BIB
Reiner, Shaw and van Willigenburg showed that if two skew Schur functions s_A and s_B are equal, then the skew shapes A and B must have the same "row overlap partitions." Here we show that these row overlap equalities are also implied by a much weaker condition than skew Schur equality: that s_A and s_B have the same support when expanded in the fundamental quasisymmetric basis F. Surprisingly, there is significant evidence supporting a conjecture that the converse is also true. In fact, we work in terms of inequalities, showing that if the F-support of s_A contains that of s_B, then the row overlap partitions of A are dominated by those of B, and again conjecture that the converse also holds. Our evidence in favor of these conjectures includes their consistency with a complete determination of all F-support containment relations for F-multiplicity-free skew Schur functions. We conclude with a consideration of how some other quasisymmetric bases fit into our framework.

Matrix orbit closures
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be the group $GL_r(C) \times (C^\times)^n$. We conjecture that the finely-graded Hilbert series of a $G$ orbit closure in the space of $r$-by-$n$ matrices is wholly determined by the associated matroid. In support of this, we prove that the coefficients of this Hilbert series corresponding to certain hook-shaped Schur functions in the $GL_r(C)$ variables are determined by the matroid, and that the orbit closure has a set-theoretic system of ideal generators whose combinatorics are also so determined. We also discuss relations between these Hilbert series for related matrices, including their stabilizing behaviour as $r$ increases.

On a relation between certain character values of symmetric groups and its connection with creation operators of symmetric functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we derive a relation of new kind between certain character values of symmetric groups in terms of so-called maya diagrams. We also investigate a relation between our result and Bernstein's creation operators for Schur functions, and consider analogous relations for projective characters of symmetric groups through creation operators for Schur $Q$-functions. We also consider analogous relations for characters of Brauer algebras and walled Brauer algebras.

Charge on tableaux and the poset of k-shapes
Published • View Publication • BIB
A poset on a certain class of partitions known as k-shapes was recently introduced to provide a combinatorial rule for the expansion of a (k-1)-Schur functions into k-Schur functions at t=1. The main ingredient in this construction was a bijection, which we call the weak bijection, that associates to a k-tableau a pair made out of a (k-1)-tableau and a path in the poset of k-shapes. We define here a concept of charge on k-tableaux (which conjecturally gives a combinatorial interpretation for the expansion coefficients of Hall-Littlewood polynomials into k-Schur functions), and show that it is compatible in the standard case with the weak bijection. In particular, we obtain that the usual charge of a standard tableau of size n is equal to the sum of the charges of its corresponding paths in the poset of k-shapes, for k=2,3...n.
Schur function identities arising from the basic representation of $A^{(2)}_{2}$
Published • View Publication • BIB
A Lie theoretic interpretation is given for some formulas of Schur functions and Schur $Q$-functions. Two realizations of the basic representation of the Lie algebra $A^{(2)}_2$ are considered; one is on the fermionic Fock space and the other is on the bosonic polynomial space. Via the boson-fermion correspondence, simple relations of the vacuum expectation values of fermions turn out to be algebraic relations of Schur functions.

Permutation patterns, Stanley symmetric functions and generalized Specht modules
Published • View Publication • BIB
Generalizing the notion of a vexillary permutation, we introduce a filtration of S_infinity by the number of Schur function terms in the Stanley symmetric function, with the kth filtration level called the k-vexillary permutations. We show that for each k, the k-vexillary permutations are characterized by avoiding a finite set of patterns. A key step is the construction of a Specht series, in the sense of James and Peel, for the Specht module associated to the diagram of a permutation. As a corollary, we prove a conjecture of Liu on diagram varieties for certain classes of permutation diagrams. We apply similar techniques to characterize multiplicity-free Stanley symmetric functions, as well as permutations whose diagram is equivalent to a forest in the sense of Liu.

FPSAC 2013 Extended Abstract. We introduce a new basis of the non-commutative symmetric functions whose elements have Schur functions as their commutative images. Dually, we build a basis of the quasi-symmetric functions which expand positively in the fundamental quasi-symmetric functions and decompose Schur functions according to a signed combinatorial formula.

Row-strict Quasisymmetric Schur Functions, Characterizations of Demazure Atoms, and Permuted Basement Nonsymmetric Macdonald Polynomials
We give a Littlewood-Richardson type rule for expanding the product of a row-strict quasisymmetric Schur function and a symmetric Schur function in terms of row-strict quasisymmetric Schur functions. We then discuss a family of polynomials called Demazure atoms. We review the known characterizations of these polynomials and then present two new characterizations. Finally, we consider a family of polynomials called permuted basement nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials which are obtained by permuting the basement of the combinatorial formula of Haglund, Haiman, and Loehr for nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials. We show that these permuted basement nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials are the simultaneous eigenfunctions of a family of commuting operators in the double affine Hecke algebra.

Dual Equivalence Graphs Revisited and the Explicit Schur Expansion of a Family of LLT Polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
In 2007 Sami Assaf introduced dual equivalence graphs as a method for demonstrating that a quasisymmetric function is Schur positive. The method involves the creation of a graph whose vertices are weighted by Ira Gessel's fundamental quasisymmetric functions so that the sum of the weights of a connected component is a single Schur function. In this paper, we improve on Assaf's axiomatization of such graphs, giving locally testable criteria that are more easily verified by computers. We further advance the theory of dual equivalence graphs by describing a broader class of graphs that correspond to an explicit Schur expansion in terms of Yamanouchi words. Along the way, we demonstrate several symmetries in the structure of dual equivalence graphs. We then apply these techniques to give explicit Schur expansions for a family of Lascoux-Leclerc-Thibon polynomials. This family properly contains the previously known case of polynomials indexed by two skew shapes, as was described in a 1995 paper by Christophe Carré and Bernard Leclerc. As an immediate corollary, we gain an explicit Schur expansion for a family of modified Macdonald polynomials in terms of Yamanouchi words. This family includes all polynomials indexed by shapes with at most three cells in the first row and at most two cells in the second row, providing an extension to the combinatorial description of the two column case described in 2005 by James Haglund, Mark Haiman, and Nick Loehr.
