Pieri Rule for GQs Computed via Strict Decomposition Tableaux
$GQ$ functions are symmetric functions indexed by strict partitions that represent $K$-theoretic Schubert classes in the Lagrangian Grassmannian. Buch and Ravikumar proved a Pieri rule for expanding $GQ_λ\cdot GQ_p$ in terms of $GQ$s via certain shifted skew tableaux. In this paper we identify an alternative family of shifted tableaux that enumerates this Pieri rule. This partially resolves a conjecture from previous work that these tableaux enumerate the expansion of $GQ_λ \cdot GQ_τ$ in terms of $GQ$s where $τ$ is a trapezoid shape.
Chow classes of matroids and standard Young tableaux
We study the Chow classes of arbitrary matroids in the Grassmannian. We develop a new combinatorial approach for computing them, by first focusing on snake matroids and then extending our results via valuativity to any matroid. Our main contribution identifies the Poincaré dual of the Chow class of a snake matroid with a specific ribbon Schur function, providing an explicit formula for its coefficients in the Schubert basis as the number of standard Young tableaux of a given shape with a prescribed descent set. This agrees with a formula by Klyachko for the uniform matroid. As consequences, we recover and simplify classical results such as Gessel and Viennot's enumeration of permutations with fixed descent sets, and formulas for the volume of lattice path matroids. Furthermore, we demonstrate the power of our findings by proving that certain Schubert coefficients are positive for all connected paving matroids.
Bumpless Pipe Dream Fragments -- Equivariant Geometry of Clans
In this paper, we establish a new geometric setting for bumpless pipe dreams and double Schubert polynomials. Building on the notion of bumpless pipe dream fragments, we define clan polynomials as their weight generating functions. It turns out that clan polynomials arise naturally in the equivariant geometry of ($GL_p\times GL_q$)-orbits over the flag variety $Fl_{p+q}$ parametrized by $(p,q)$-clans. Furthermore, we show that the coefficients in the equivariant Schubert expansion of the fundamental classes of ($GL_p\times GL_q$)-orbit closures are exactly clan polynomials, which resolves an open problem posed by Wyser and Yong.
Richardson tableaux and Schubert positivity
We compute the Schubert cycle expansion of those irreducible components of Springer fibers equal to Richardson varieties. This generalizes work of Güemes in the case of a hook shape and answers a question of Karp-Precup.
Intersection cohomology without spaces

We survey three settings in which dimensions of intersection cohomology groups of algebraic varieties provide deep combinatorial and representation-theoretic information, and computations of the groups themselves have been made using combinatorial sheaves on finite posets. These settings are (1) intersection cohomology of Schubert varieties, the associated Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials and their realizations via moment graph sheaves and Soergel bimodules; (2) intersection cohomology of toric varieties, the associated g-polynomials of convex polytopes, and their realization via the theory of intersection cohomology of fans; and (3) intersection cohomology of arrangement Schubert varieties, the associated Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of matroids, and their realization via intersection cohomology of matroids. In all three settings these constructions are valid in more general situations where the variety does not exist, leading to "intersection cohomology without spaces." We give parallel presentations of these three stories, highlighting applications to KLS-polynomials.
Combinatorial Aspects of Elliptic Schubert Calculus
The main goal of this paper is to extend two fundamental combinatorial results in Schubert calculus on flag manifolds from equivariant cohomology and $K$-theory to equivariant elliptic cohomology. The foundations of elliptic Schubert calculus were laid in a few relatively recent papers by Rimányi, Weber, and Kumar. They include the recursive construction of elliptic Schubert classes via generalizations of the cohomology and $K$-theory push-pull operators and the study of the corresponding Demazure algebra. We derive a Billey-type formula for the localization of elliptic Schubert classes (for partial flag manifolds of arbitrary type) and a pipe dream model for their polynomial representatives in the case of type $A$ flag manifolds. The latter extends the pipe dream model for double Schubert and Grothendieck polynomials. We also study the degeneration of elliptic Schubert classes to $K$-theory, which recovers the corresponding classical formulas.

$T$-varieties are normal varieties equipped with an action of an algebraic torus $T$. When the action is effective, the complexity of a $T$-variety $X$ is $\dim(X)-\dim(T)$. Matrix Schubert varieties, introduced by Fulton in 1992, are $T$-varieties consisting of $n \times n$ matrices satisfying certain constraints on the ranks of their submatrices. In this paper, we focus on the complexity of certain torus-fixed affine subvarieties of matrix Schubert varieties. Concretely, given a matrix Schubert variety $\overline{X_{w}}$ where $w\in S_n$, we study the complexity of $Y_w$ obtained by the decomposition $\overline{X_{w}} = Y_{w} \times \mathbb{C}^{k}$ with $k$ as large as possible. Building up from results by Escobar and Mészáros and Donten-Bury, Escobar, and Portakal, we show that for a fixed $n$, the complexity of $Y_{w}$ with respect to this action can be any integer between $0$ and $(n-1)(n-3)$, except $1$.
Torus Actions on Matrix Schubert and Kazhdan-Lusztig Varieties, and their Links to Statistical Models
We investigate the toric geometry of two families of generalised determinantal varieties arising from permutations: Matrix Schubert varieties ($\overline{X_w}$) and Kazhdan-Lusztig varieties ($\mathcal{N}_{v,w}$). Matrix Schubert varieties can be written as $\overline{X_w} = Y_w \times \mathbb C^d$, where $d$ is maximal. We are especially interested in the structure and complexity of these varieties $Y_w$ and $\mathcal{N}_{v,w}$ under the so-called usual torus actions. In the case when $Y_w$ is toric, we provide a full characterisation of the simple reflections $s_i$ that render ${Y_{w \cdot s_i}}$ toric, as well as the corresponding changes to the weight cone. For Kazhdan-Lusztig varieties, we consider how moving one of the two permutations $v,w$ along a chain in the Bruhat poset affects their complexity. Additionally, we study the complexity of these varieties, for permutations $v$ and $w$ of a specific structure. Finally, we consider the links between these determinantal varieties and two classes of statistical models; namely conditional independence and quasi-independence models.
Totally positive Toeplitz matrices: classical and modern

By a theorem of Edrei, an infinite, normalised totally nonnegative upper-triangular Toeplitz matrix is determined by a pair of nonnegative parameter sequences, the `Schoenberg parameters', where nonzero parameters correspond to the roots and poles of a naturally associated generating function. These totally nonnegative Toeplitz matrices and their parameters also arise in the classification of characters of the infinite symmetric group by later work of Thoma. Moreover the Schoenberg parameters have an asymptotic interpretation in terms of irreducible representations of S_n and their Young diagrams by Vershik-Kerov. In this article we consider infinite totally positive Toeplitz matrices as limits of finite ones, and we obtain two further asymptotic descriptions of the Schoenberg parameters that are now related to quantum cohomology of the flag variety as n goes to infinity. One is related to asymptotics of normalised quantum parameters, and the other to asymptotics of the Chern classes of the tautological line bundles. We also describe the asymptotics of (quantum) Schubert classes in terms of the Schoenberg parameters. Our limit formulas relate to and were motivated by a tropical analogue of this theory that we survey. In the tropical setting one finds an asymptotic relationship between the `tropical Schoenberg parameters' and the weight map from Lusztig's parametrisation of the canonical basis.
Vanishing of Schubert coefficients in probabilistic polynomial time
The Schubert vanishing problem asks whether Schubert structure constants are zero. We give a complete solution of the problem from an algorithmic point of view, by showing that Schubert vanishing can be decided in probabilistic polynomial time.
Hybrid pipe dreams for the lower-upper scheme
In [KU23] were introduced hybrid pipe dreams interpolating between classic and bumpless pipe dreams, each hybridization giving a different formula for double Schubert polynomials. A bijective proof was given (following [GH23]) of the independence of hybridization, but only for nonequivariant Schubert polynomials. In this paper we further generalize to hybrid generic pipe dreams, replacing the bijective proof of hybridization-independence with a Yang-Baxter-based proof that allows one to maintain equivariance. An additional YB-based proof establishes a divided-difference type recurrence for these generic pipe dream polynomials. These polynomials compute something richer than double Schubert polynomials, namely the equivariant classes of the lower-upper varieties introduced in [Knu05]. We give two proofs of this: the easier being a proof that the recurrence relation holds on those classes, the more difficult being a degeneration of the lower-upper variety to a union of quadratic complete intersections (plus, possibly, some embedded components) whose individual classes match those of the generic pipe dreams. One new feature of the generic situation is a definition of the "flux" through an edge of the matrix; the notion of pipe dream itself can then be derived from the equalities among the fluxes.

The geometric Tevelev degrees of projective space enumerate general, pointed algebraic curves interpolating through the maximal possible number of points. Previous work expresses these invariants in terms of Schubert calculus. Extending ideas of Gillespie--Reimer-Berg, we use the RSK correspondence to give a positive interpretation of these counts in terms of the combinatorics of words.
Zero-free sector of the Wronski map on the totally nonnegative Grassmannian
A classical result states that if $f(z)$ is a polynomial of degree at most $n$ with nonnegative coefficients, then $f(z)$ has no zeros in the sector $|\arg(z)| < \fracπ{n}$ of the complex plane, and the bound $\fracπ{n}$ is tight. Motivated by the Shapiro--Shapiro conjecture and related problems in real Schubert calculus, we generalize this result to Wronskians of polynomials. Namely, let $f_1(z), \dots, f_k(z)$ be linearly independent polynomials of degree at most $n$ whose coefficient matrix has all nonnegative $k\times k$ minors (that is, the polynomials span an element of the totally nonnegative Grassmannian in the sense of Lusztig and Postnikov). We show that the Wronskian polynomial $\operatorname{Wr}(f_1, \dots, f_k)$ has no complex zeros in the sector $|\arg(z)| < \fracπ{n}$ (independent of $k$), and the bound $\fracπ{n}$ is tight. Our proof uses classical results of Gantmakher and Krein (1950) and Obreschkoff (1923) on sign variation.
Derivatives of padded Schubert polynomials through pipe dreams
In recent work, Hamaker, Pechenik, Speyer, and Weigandt showed that a certain differential operator $\nabla$ expands positively in the basis of Schubert polynomials. For $π$ a dominant permutation, Gaetz and Tung showed an analogous positivity result holds for a dual differential operator $Δ$ acting on $π$-padded Schubert polynomials. In this paper, we provide a new proof of the result of Gaetz and Tung using the combinatorics of pipe dreams.
Structure constants of Peterson Schubert calculus
We give an explicit, positive, and type-uniform formula for all equivariant structure constants of the Peterson Schubert calculus in arbitrary Lie types, using only the Cartan matrix of the corresponding root system $Φ$. As an application, we derive a type-uniform formula for the mixed $Φ$-Eulerian numbers.
Lorentzian polynomials and matroids over triangular hyperfields 1: Topological aspects
Lorentzian polynomials serve as a bridge between continuous and discrete convexity, connecting analysis and combinatorics. In this article, we study the topology of the space $\mathbb{P}\textrm{L}_J$ of Lorentzian polynomials on $J$ modulo $\mathbb{R}_{>0}$, which is nonempty if and only if $J$ is the set of bases of a polymatroid. We prove that $\mathbb{P}\textrm{L}_J$ is a manifold with boundary of dimension equal to the Tutte rank of $J$, and more precisely, that it is homeomorphic to a closed Euclidean ball with the Dressian of $J$ removed from its boundary. Furthermore, we show that $\mathbb{P}\textrm{L}_J$ is homeomorphic to the thin Schubert cell $\textrm{Gr}_J(\mathbb{T}_q)$ of $J$ over the triangular hyperfield $\mathbb{T}_q$, introduced by Viro in the context of tropical geometry and Maslov dequantization, for any $q>0$. This identification enables us to apply the representation theory of polymatroids developed in a companion paper, as well as earlier work by the first and fourth authors on foundations of matroids, to give a simple explicit description of $\mathbb{P}\textrm{L}_J$ up to homeomorphism in several key cases. Our results show that $\mathbb{P}\textrm{L}_J$ always admits a compactification homeomorphic to a closed Euclidean ball. They can also be used to answer a question of Brändén in the negative by showing that the closure of $\mathbb{P}\textrm{L}_J$ within the space of all polynomials modulo $\mathbb{R}_{>0}$ is not homeomorphic to a closed Euclidean ball in general. In addition, we introduce the Hausdorff compactification of the space of rescaling classes of Lorentzian polynomials and show that the Chow quotient of a complex Grassmannian maps naturally to this compactification. This provides a geometric framework that connects the asymptotic structure of the space of Lorentzian polynomials with classical constructions in algebraic geometry.
Saturation for Non-Symmetric Macdonald Polynomials
We prove that supports of non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials are $M$-convex. As a consequence, we resolve a 2019 conjecture of Monical, Tokcan, and Yong that they have the saturated Newton polytope property. As a further consequence, we prove that the moment polytopes of affine Schubert varieties in the affine Grassmannian of type $\mathrm{GL}$ are generalized permutahedra.
Rowmotion and Echelonmotion
Given a linear extension $σ$ of a finite poset $R$, we consider the permutation matrix indexing the Schubert cell containing the Cartan matrix of $R$ with respect to $σ$. This yields a bijection $\mathrm{Ech}_σ\colon R\to R$ that we call echelonmotion; it is the inverse of the Coxeter permutation studied by Klász, Marczinzik, and Thomas. Those authors proved that echelonmotion agrees with rowmotion when $R$ is a distributive lattice. We generalize this result to semidistributive lattices. In addition, we prove that every trim lattice has a linear extension with respect to which echelonmotion agrees with rowmotion. We also show that echelonmotion on an Eulerian poset (with respect to any linear extension) is an involution. Finally, we initiate the study of echelon-independent posets, which are posets for which echelonmotion is independent of the chosen linear extension. We prove that a lattice is echelon-independent if and only if it is semidistributive. Moreover, we show that echelon-independent connected posets are bounded and have semidistributive MacNeille completions.
Delta-matroids and toric degenerations in OG(n,2n+1)
We construct an explicit, embedded degeneration of the general torus orbit closure in the maximal orthogonal Grassmannian OG(n,2n+1) into a union of Richardson varieties. In particular, we deduce a formula for the cohomology class of the torus orbit closure, as a sum of products of Schubert classes. The moment map images of the degenerate pieces are the base polytopes of their underlying delta-matroids, and give a polyhedral decomposition of the unit hypercube, which had previously been studied by Chen-Sanchez-Veliz-Ying.
Representation theory for polymatroids
We develop a theory of representations of (discrete) polymatroids over tracts in terms of Plücker coordinates and suitable Plücker relations. As special cases, we recover polymatroids themselves as polymatroid representations over the Krasner hyperfield K and M-convex functions as polymatroid representations over the tropical hyperfield.
We introduce and study several useful operations for polymatroid representations, such as translation and refined notions of minors and duality which have better properties than the existing definitions; for example, deletion and contraction become dual operations (up to translation) in our setting. We also prove an idempotency principle which asserts that polymatroids which are not translates of matroids are representable only over tracts that are idempotent in a certain specific sense (in particular -1 = 1).
The space of all representations of a polymatroid J, which we call the thin Schubert cell of J, is represented by an algebraic object called {universal tract of J. When we restrict to just the 3-term Plücker relations, we obtain the weak thin Schubert cell, and passing to torus orbits yields the realization space. These are represented by the universal pasture and the foundation of J, respectively. We exhibit a canonical bijection between the universal tract and the universal pasture, which is new even in the case of matroids, and we show that the foundation of a polymatroid is generated by cross ratios. We also describe a (possibly incomplete) list of multiplicative relations between cross ratios.
Thin Schubert cells and realization spaces are canonically embedded in certain tori. Over idempotent tracts, we show that thin Schubert cells contain a canonical torus orbit and split naturally as a product of the realization space with this distinguished torus.
