An order ideal is a finite poset X of (monic) monomials such that, whenever M is in X and N divides M, then N is in X. If all, say t, maximal monomials of X have the same degree, then X is pure (of type t). A pure O-sequence is the vector, h=(1,h_1,...,h_e), counting the monomials of X in each degree. Equivalently, in the language of commutative algebra, pure O-sequences are the h-vectors of monomial Artinian level algebras. Pure O-sequences had their origin in one of Richard Stanley's early works in this area, and have since played a significant role in at least three disciplines: the study of simplicial complexes and their f-vectors, level algebras, and matroids. This monograph is intended to be the first systematic study of the theory of pure O-sequences. Our work, making an extensive use of algebraic and combinatorial techniques, includes: (i) A characterization of the first half of a pure O-sequence, which gives the exact converse to an algebraic g-theorem of Hausel; (ii) A study of (the failing of) the unimodality property; (iii) The problem of enumerating pure O-sequences, including a proof that almost all O-sequences are pure, and the asymptotic enumeration of socle degree 3 pure O-sequences of type t; (iv) The Interval Conjecture for Pure O-sequences (ICP), which represents perhaps the strongest possible structural result short of an (impossible?) characterization; (v) A pithy connection of the ICP with Stanley's matroid h-vector conjecture; (vi) A specific study of pure O-sequences of type 2, including a proof of the Weak Lefschetz Property in codimension 3 in characteristic zero. As a corollary, pure O-sequences of codimension 3 and type 2 are unimodal (over any field); (vii) An analysis of the extent to which the Weak and Strong Lefschetz Properties can fail for monomial algebras; (viii) Some observations about pure f-vectors, an important special case of pure O-sequences.
Independent Sets from an Algebraic Perspective

In this paper, we study the basic problem of counting independent sets in a graph and, in particular, the problem of counting antichains in a finite poset, from an algebraic perspective. We show that neither independence polynomials of bipartite Cohen-Macaulay graphs nor Hilbert series of initial ideals of radical zero-dimensional complete intersections ideals, can be evaluated in polynomial time, unless #P=P. Moreover, we present a family of radical zero-dimensional complete intersection ideals J_P associated to a finite poset P, for which we describe a universal Gröbner basis. This implies that the bottleneck in computing the dimension of the quotient by J_P (that is, the number of zeros of J_P) using Gröbner methods lies in the description of the standard monomials.
Boxicity and Poset Dimension

Let $G$ be a simple, undirected, finite graph with vertex set $V(G)$ and edge set $E(G)$. A $k$-dimensional box is a Cartesian product of closed intervals $[a_1,b_1]\times [a_2,b_2]\times...\times [a_k,b_k]$. The {\it boxicity} of $G$, $\boxi(G)$ is the minimum integer $k$ such that $G$ can be represented as the intersection graph of $k$-dimensional boxes, i.e. each vertex is mapped to a $k$-dimensional box and two vertices are adjacent in $G$ if and only if their corresponding boxes intersect. Let $\poset=(S,P)$ be a poset where $S$ is the ground set and $P$ is a reflexive, anti-symmetric and transitive binary relation on $S$. The dimension of $\poset$, $\dim(\poset)$ is the minimum integer $t$ such that $P$ can be expressed as the intersection of $t$ total orders. Let $G_\poset$ be the \emph{underlying comparability graph} of $\poset$, i.e. $S$ is the vertex set and two vertices are adjacent if and only if they are comparable in $\poset$. It is a well-known fact that posets with the same underlying comparability graph have the same dimension. The first result of this paper links the dimension of a poset to the boxicity of its underlying comparability graph. In particular, we show that for any poset $\poset$, $\boxi(G_\poset)/(χ(G_\poset)-1) \le \dim(\poset)\le 2\boxi(G_\poset)$, where $χ(G_\poset)$ is the chromatic number of $G_\poset$ and $χ(G_\poset)\ne1$. It immediately follows that if $\poset$ is a height-2 poset, then $\boxi(G_\poset)\le \dim(\poset)\le 2\boxi(G_\poset)$ since the underlying comparability graph of a height-2 poset is a bipartite graph. The second result of the paper relates the boxicity of a graph $G$ with a natural partial order associated with the \emph{extended double cover} of $G$, denoted as $G_c$: Note that $G_c$ is a bipartite graph with partite sets $A$ and $B$ which are copies of $V(G)$ such that corresponding to every $u\in V(G)$, there are two vertices $u_A\in A$ and $u_B\in B$ and $\{u_A,v_B\}$ is an edge in $G_c$ if and only if either $u=v$ or $u$ is adjacent to $v$ in $G$. Let $\poset_c$ be the natural height-2 poset associated with $G_c$ by making $A$ the set of minimal elements and $B$ the set of maximal elements. We show that $\frac{\boxi(G)}{2} \le \dim(\poset_c) \le 2\boxi(G)+4$. These results have some immediate and significant consequences. The upper bound $\dim(\poset)\le 2\boxi(G_\poset)$ allows us to derive hitherto unknown upper bounds for poset dimension such as $\dim(\poset)\le 2\tw(G_\poset)+4$, since boxicity of any graph is known to be at most its $\tw+2$. In the other direction, using the already known bounds for partial order dimension we get the following: (1) The boxicity of any graph with maximum degree $Δ$ is $O(Δ\log^2Δ)$ which is an improvement over the best known upper bound of $Δ^2+2$. (2) There exist graphs with boxicity $Ω(Δ\logΔ)$. This disproves a conjecture that the boxicity of a graph is $O(Δ)$. (3) There exists no polynomial-time algorithm to approximate the boxicity of a bipartite graph on $n$ vertices with a factor of $O(n^{0.5-ε})$ for any $ε>0$, unless $NP=ZPP$.
Linear equations for the number of intervals which are isomorphic with Boolean lattices and the Dehn--Sommerville equations
Let $P$ be a finite poset. Let $L:=J(P)$ denote the lattice of order ideals of $P$. Let $b_i(L)$ denote the number of Boolean intervals of $L$ of rank $i$. We construct a simple graph $G(P)$ from our poset $P$. Denote by $f_i(P)$ the number of the cliques $K_{i+1}$, contained in the graph $G(P)$. Our main results are some linear equations connecting the numbers $f_i(P)$ and $b_i(L)$. We reprove the Dehn--Sommerville equations for simplicial polytopes. In our proof we use free resolutions and the theory of Stanley--Reisner rings.
Ring of Polytopes, Quasi-symmetric functions and Fibonacci numbers
In this paper we study the ring $\mathcal{P}$ of combinatorial convex polytopes. We introduce the algebra of operators $\mathcal{D}$ generated by the operators $d_k$ that send an $n$-dimensional polytope $P^n$ to the sum of all its $(n-k)$-dimensional faces. It turns out that $\mathcal{D}$ is isomorphic to the universal Leibnitz-Hopf algebra with the antipode $χ(d_k)=(-1)^kd_k$. Using the operators $d_k$ we build the generalized $f$-polynomial, which is a ring homomorphism from $\mathcal{P}$ to the ring $\Qsym[t_1,t_2,...][α]$ of quasi-symmetric functions with coefficients in $\mathbb Z[α]$. The images of two polytopes coincide if and only if their flag $f$-vectors are equal. We describe the image of this homomorphism over the integers and prove that over the rationals it is a free polynomial algebra with dimension of the $n$-th graded component equal to the $n$-th Fibonacci number. This gives a representation of the Fibonacci series as an infinite product. The homomorphism is an isomorphism on the graded group $BB$ generated by the polytopes introduced by Bayer and Billera to find the linear span of flag $f$-vectors of convex polytopes. This gives the group $BB$ a structure of the ring isomorphic to $f(\mathcal{P})$. We show that the ring of polytopes has a natural Hopf comodule structure over the Rota-Hopf algebra of posets. As a corollary we build a ring homomorphism $l_α\colon\mathcal{P}\to\mathcal{R}[α]$ such that $F(l_α(P))=f(P)^*$, where $F$ is the Ehrenborg quasi-symmetric function.

The absolute order on the hyperoctahedral group $B_n$ is investigated. It is proved that the order ideal of this poset generated by the Coxeter elements is homotopy Cohen-Macaulay and the Möbius number of this ideal is computed. Moreover, it is shown that every closed interval in the absolute order on $B_n$ is shellable and an example of a non-Cohen-Macaulay interval in the absolute order on $D_4$ is given. Finally, the closed intervals in the absolute order on $B_n$ and $D_n$ which are lattices are characterized and some of their important enumerative invariants are computed.

In this paper we study finite Eulerian posets which are binomial, Sheffer or triangular. These important classes of posets are related to the theory of generating functions and to geometry. The results of this paper are organized as follows:
We completely determine the structure of Eulerian binomial posets and, as a conclusion, we are able to classify factorial functions of Eulerian binomial posets;
We give an almost complete classification of factorial functions of Eulerian Sheffer posets by dividing the original question into several cases;
In most cases above, we completely determine the structure of Eulerian Sheffer posets, a result stronger than just classifying factorial functions of these Eulerian Sheffer posets.
We also study Eulerian triangular posets. This paper answers questions asked by R. Ehrenborg and M. Readdy. This research is also motivated by the work of R. Stanley about recognizing the boolean lattice by looking at smaller intervals.
Fountain Codes with Varying Probability Distributions

Fountain codes are rateless erasure-correcting codes, i.e., an essentially infinite stream of encoded packets can be generated from a finite set of data packets. Several fountain codes have been proposed recently to minimize overhead, many of which involve modifications of the Luby transform (LT) code. These fountain codes, like the LT code, have the implicit assumption that the probability distribution is fixed throughout the encoding process. In this paper, we will use the theory of posets to show that this assumption is unnecessary, and by dropping it, we can achieve overhead reduction by as much as 64% lower than LT codes. We also present the fundamental theory of probability distribution designs for fountain codes with non-constant probability distributions that minimize overhead.

Given the toric (or toral) arrangement defined by a root system $Φ$, we describe the poset of its layers (connected components of intersections) and we count its elements. Indeed we show how to reduce to zero-dimensional layers, and in this case we provide an explicit formula involving the maximal subdiagrams of the affine Dynkin diagram of $Φ$. Then we compute the Euler characteristic and the Poincare' polynomial of the complement of the arrangement, which is the set of regular points of the torus.

For a family $\mathcal{F}$ of subsets of [n]=\{1, 2, ..., n} ordered by inclusion, and a partially ordered set P, we say that $\mathcal{F}$ is P-free if it does not contain a subposet isomorphic to P. Let $ex(n, P)$ be the largest size of a P-free family of subsets of [n]. Let $Q_2$ be the poset with distinct elements a, b, c, d, a<b, c<d; i.e., the 2-dimensional Boolean lattice. We show that $2N -o(N) \leq ex(n, Q_2)\leq 2.283261N +o(N), $ where $N = \binom{n}{\lfloor n/2 \rfloor}$. We also prove that the largest $Q_2$-free family of subsets of [n] having at most three different sizes has at most 2.20711N members.
Congruence B-Orbits and the Bruhat Poset of Involutions of the Symmetric Group
We study the poset of Borel congruence classes of symmetric matrices ordered by containment of closures. We give a combinatorial description of this poset and calculate its rank function. We discuss the relation between this poset and the Bruhat poset of involutions of the symmetric group.
On a conjecture of Stanley depth of squarefree Veronese ideals

In this paper, we partially confirm a conjecture, proposed by Cimpoeaş, Keller, Shen, Streib and Young, on the Stanley depth of squarefree Veronese ideals $I_{n,d}$. This conjecture suggests that, for positive integers $1 \le d \le n$, $\sdepth (I_{n,d})= \lfloor \binom{n}{d+1}/\binom{n}{d} \rfloor+d$. Herzog, Vladoiu and Zheng established a connection between the Stanley depths of quotients of monomial ideals and interval partitions of certain associated posets. Based on this connection, Keller, Shen, Streib and Young recently developed a useful combinatorial tool to analyze the interval partitions of the posets associated with the squarefree Veronese ideals. We modify their ideas and prove that if $1 \le d \le n \le (d+1) \lfloor \frac{1+\sqrt{5+4d}}{2}\rfloor+2d$, then $\sdepth (I_{n,d})= \lfloor \binom{n}{d+1}/\binom{n}{d} \rfloor+d$. We also obtain $ \lfloor \frac{d+\sqrt{d^2+4(n+1)}}{2} \rfloor \le \sdepth(I_{n,d}) \le \lfloor \binom{n}{d+1}/\binom{n}{d} \rfloor+d$ for $n > (d+1) \lfloor \frac{1+\sqrt{5+4d}}{2}\rfloor+2d$. As a byproduct of our construction, We give an alternative proof of Theorem $1.1 $ in $[13]$ without graph theory.
Simple extensions of combinatorial structures

An interval in a combinatorial structure S is a set I of points which relate to every point from S I in the same way. A structure is simple if it has no proper intervals. Every combinatorial structure can be expressed as an inflation of a simple structure by structures of smaller sizes -- this is called the substitution (or modular) decomposition. In this paper we prove several results of the following type: An arbitrary structure S of size n belonging to a class C can be embedded into a simple structure from C by adding at most f(n) elements. We prove such results when C is the class of all tournaments, graphs, permutations, posets, digraphs, oriented graphs and general relational structures containing a relation of arity greater than 2. The function f(n) in these cases is 2, \lceil log_2(n+1)\rceil, \lceil (n+1)/2\rceil, \lceil (n+1)/2\rceil, \lceil log_4(n+1)\rceil, \lceil \log_3(n+1)\rceil and 1, respectively. In each case these bounds are best possible.
A forest formula for the antipode in incidence Hopf algebras
We present a new formula for the antipode of incidence Hopf algebras. This formula is expressed as an alternating sum over forests. First, we prove the formula for incidence Hopf algebras of families of lattices by exhibiting a map from chains of a lattice to forests. Then, we extend the definition and present an analogous formula for the antipode of incidence Hopf algebras of families of posets. We characterize those families for which our formula is cancellation-free.

Partially ordered sets labeled with k labels (k-posets) and their homomorphisms are examined. We give a representation of directed graphs by k-posets; this provides a new proof of the universality of the homomorphism order of k-posets. This universal order is a distributive lattice. We investigate some other properties, namely the infinite distributivity, the computation of infinite suprema and infima, and the complexity of certain decision problems involving the homomorphism order of k-posets. Sublattices are also examined.

We study the equivalence relation on the set of acyclic orientations of an undirected graph G generated by source-to-sink conversions. These conversions arise in the contexts of admissible sequences in Coxeter theory, quiver representations, and asynchronous graph dynamical systems. To each equivalence class we associate a poset, characterize combinatorial properties of these posets, and in turn, the admissible sequences. This allows us to construct an explicit bijection from the equivalence classes over G to those over G' and G", the graphs obtained from G by edge deletion and edge contraction of a fixed cycle-edge, respectively. This bijection yields quick and elegant proofs of two non-trivial results: (i) A complete combinatorial invariant of the equivalence classes, and (ii) a solution to the conjugacy problem of Coxeter elements for simply-laced Coxeter groups. The latter was recently proven by H. Eriksson and K. Eriksson using a much different approach.
A direct encoding of Stoimenow's matchings as ascent sequences
In connection with Vassiliev's knot invariants, Stoimenow (1998) introduced certain matchings, also called regular linearized chord diagrams. Bousquet-Melou et al. (2008) gave a bijection from those matchings to unlabeled (2+2)-free posets; they also showed how to encode the posets as so called ascent sequences. In this paper we present a direct encoding of Stoimenow's matchings as ascent sequences. In doing so we give the rules for recursively constructing and deconstructing such matchings.
Looping of the numbers game and the alcoved hypercube

We study in detail the so-called looping case of Mozes's game of numbers, which concerns the (finite) orbits in the reflection representation of affine Weyl groups situated on the boundary of the Tits cone. We give a simple proof that all configurations in the orbit are obtainable from each other by playing the numbers game, and give a strategy for going from one configuration to another. The strategy gives rise to a partition of the finite Weyl group into finitely many graded posets, one for each extending vertex of the associated extended Dynkin diagram. These are selfdual and mutually isomorphic, and dual to the triangulation of the unit hypercube by reflecting hyperplanes, studied by many authors. Unlike the weak and Bruhat orders, the top degree is cubic in the number of vertices of the graph. We explicitly compute the Hilbert polynomial of the poset.

In this article we study the curvature properties of the order complex of a graded poset under a metric that we call the ``orthoscheme metric''. In addition to other results, we characterize which rank 4 posets have CAT(0) orthoscheme complexes and by applying this theorem to standard posets and complexes associated with four-generator Artin groups, we are able to show that the 5-string braid group is the fundamental group of a compact nonpositively curved space.
