Asymptotics and inequalities for the broken $k$-diamond partition function
Many papers have studied inequalities for Andrews and Paule's broken $k$-diamond partition function $Δ_{k}(n)$ when $k=1$ or $2$. In this paper, we derive an exact formula for $Δ_{k}(n)$ when $k\geq 1$. Building on this result, we also derive an asymptotic formula for $Δ_{k}(n)$ with an explicit error bound. Using this formula, we prove that for $k\geq 1$ and sufficiently large $n$, $Δ_{k}(n)$ satisfies the Turán and Laguerre inequalities of any order and exhibits asymptotic complete monotonicity. Define $n_k:=\max\left\{\left\lceil8k^{3}+\frac{k+1}{12}\right\rceil,526\right\}$. Furthermore, we show that $Δ_{k}(n)$ is log-concave for $k\ge3$ and $n\ge n_k$. Consequently, it follows that $Δ_{k}(a)Δ_{k}(b)\geΔ_{k}(a+b)$ for $k\ge3$ and $a,b \ge n_k$.

Trees and Graphs with Non Log-concave Dominating Set Sequence via AI Tools
We give new examples of graphs and trees with dominating set sequences that are not log-concave. These examples were generated by PatternBoost, a transformer-based reinforcement learning software developed by Charton-Ellenberg-Wagner-Williamson. We also show: for any positive integer $m$, there exists a tree whose dominating set sequence is not log-concave for at least $m$ indices by modifying a similar construction of Bautista-Ramos for the independent set sequence. We show that a large class of caterpillar graphs has log-concave dominating set sequences. A continuous analogue of the sequence is also log-concave for all graphs.

Unimodality and log-concavity of generalized Glasby-Paseman sequences
In this paper, we consider a two-parameter ($l$ and $a$) generalization of a sequence that Glasby and Paseman considered. Based on computer experiments, we conjecture its unimodality, log-concavity, peak positions, and the asymptotic behavior of the maximum values. Then we prove this conjecture for the case where $l=2$ and $a=1$. We finish the paper by making some comments about the conjecture on the generalized sequence.

Log-Concavity and Infinite Log-Concavity of Linear Recurrent Sequences with Linear Coefficients via Companion Matrix Methods
We study log-concavity properties of real sequences $(a_n)_{n \ge 0}$ satisfying a $d$-th order linear recurrence whose coefficients are linear functions of $n$; the so-called P-recursive (or holonomic) sequences. Writing the recurrence in companion-matrix form $\mathbf{v}_{n+1} = M_n\,\mathbf{v}_n$ with $M_n = nA + B$, we show that the log-concave operator value $\mathcal{L}(a_n) = b_n \coloneqq a_n^2 - a_{n+1}a_{n-1}$ is a quadratic form in the state vector $\mathbf{v}_n$, and identify the matrix $Q_n = Q^{(0)} + nQ^{(1)}$ whose positive semi-definiteness gives a sufficient condition for log-concavity. For the class of second-order recurrences with constant coefficients, we prove a tight (necessary and sufficient) criterion for the sequence to be $\infty$-log-concave, a consequence of the fact that $\mathcal{L}(a_n)$ is itself a geometric sequence so that $\mathcal{L}^2(a_n) = 0$ identically. We obtain analogous tight criteria for sequences fixed by $\mathcal{L}$, and for P-recursive sequences satisfying a dominant-root asymptotic behaviour. We leave some further insight in case this criteria break down in full generality.

Independent domination polynomial of comaximal graphs of commutative rings
Published in Algebra Colloquium, in the second issue of 2026 • View Publication • BIB
The comaximal graph $ Γ(R) $ of a commutative ring $R$ is a simple graph with vertex set $ R $ and two distinct vertices $ a $ and $b $ of $ Γ(R) $ are adjacent if and only if $ aR+bR=R $, where $ aR $ is the ideal generated by $ a $ in $ R $. In this article, the independent domination polynomial $ D_{i}(Γ(\mathbb{Z}_{n}),x) $ of $ Γ(\mathbb{Z}_{n}) $ is discussed, along with its unimodal and log-concave properties for certain values of $n$. Some auxiliary results related to $D_{i}(Γ(\mathbb{Z}_{n}),x)$ are presented in terms of their zeros. In addition, we determine the independence polynomial $ I(Γ(\mathbb{Z}_{n}),x ) $ of $ Γ(\mathbb{Z}_{n}) $ for special values of $n$ and provide a general result associated with it. The bounds for the zero of the polynomial $ I(Γ(\mathbb{Z}_{n}),x ) $ are established, and their log-concave and unimodal properties are examined.

Log-concavity from enumerative geometry of planar curve singularities
We propose a log-concavity conjecture for BPS invariants arising in the enumerative geometry of planar curve singularities, identified with the local Euler obstructions of Severi strata in their versal deformations. We further extend this conjecture to ruling polynomials of Legendrian links and to E-polynomials of character varieties. We establish these conjectures for irreducible weighted-homogeneous singularities (torus knots) and for ADE singularities, and prove a multiplicative property for ruling polynomials compatible with log-concavity.

Inverse Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials of fan matroids
The inverse Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomial of a matroid was introduced by Gao and Xie, and the inverse $Z$-polynomial of a matroid was introduced by Ferroni, Matherne, Stevens, and Vecchi. In this paper, we study these two polynomials for fan matroids, a family of graphic matroids associated with fan graphs. We first derive the generating functions for the inverse Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials of fan matroids using their recursive definition, and then deduce the explicit formulas of these polynomials therefrom. For the inverse $Z$-polynomials of fan matroids, we obtain their generating functions using a parallel generating function approach, and further derive their explicit expansions based on these generating functions. Additionally, we provide alternative proofs for the above generating functions using the deletion formulas for inverse Kazhdan--Lusztig and inverse $Z$-polynomials. As an application of the explicit formula for inverse Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials, we prove that the coefficients of the inverse Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomial of the fan matroid form a log-concave sequence with no internal zeros.
Luck and magic for Pitman-Stanley polytopes and parking functions
Motivated by the combinatorics of parking functions and their several generalizations, we study the Ehrhart theory of Pitman--Stanley polytopes. We prove a strong positivity phenomenon called \emph{magic positivity} for the Ehrhart polynomials of these polytopes, which in turn implies that their $h^*$-polynomials are real-rooted (and thus log-concave and unimodal). Our result is achieved by interpreting the coefficients of these Ehrhart polynomials in the \emph{magic basis} in terms of the number of \emph{lucky cars} in a modified parking protocol. Furthermore, we address the magic positivity problem for $\mathbf{y}$-generalized permutohedra and also discuss a \emph{magic} combinatorial interpretation for them, under the assumption that the input parameters are sufficiently large.

Closing Trees into Unicyclic Counterexamples
We develop a family-based route to unicyclic graphs whose independence polynomials are unimodal but not log-concave. The paper is organized around one flagship statement: for the explicit KL-closure family $U_{k,r}$, with $r\in\{0,1,2\}$ and admissible $k$, the independence polynomial is unimodal but not log-concave. The proof separates the closure polynomial into a dominant convolution term and a real-rooted correction term. On the non-log-concavity side, we prove symbolically that the penultimate log-concavity inequality fails for every admissible parameter. On the unimodality side, we prove that the main convolution term $H_{k,r}=G_kF_{k+r}$ is unimodal with a controlled mode, using a combination of exact coefficient formulas, Ibragimov's strong-unimodality principle, and a residue-class growth argument. Darroch localization and an adjacent-mode bridge lemma then transfer that mode statement to the full KL closure polynomial. This yields an explicit infinite family of unicyclic graphs with unimodal but non-log-concave independence polynomials. In the exact range $k\le 400$, we further verify that the penultimate break is unique and determine exact mode formulas for $H_{k,r}$, the binomial correction term, and $I(U_{k,r};x)$ itself. The paper also places the KL family inside a broader reservoir program involving Galvin, Ramos-Sun, and Bautista-Ramos trees, from which we obtain substantial universal exact theorems for finite ranges.
Linear recurrences for non-log-concave independence polynomials of trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
We identify a structural pattern in the construction of known infinite families of trees whose independence polynomials are not log-concave. Using this pattern and properties of polynomial ring ideals, we derive linear recurrences for these polynomials. As a consequence, we prove that the set of non-isolated limit points of their zeros lies on the circle $|z+1/3|=1/3$ in the complex plane. Building on these recurrences, we also exhibit infinite families of trees whose independence polynomials break log-concavity at one, two, and three consecutive indices, as well as finite families that break log-concavity at four and five consecutive indices. Our approach suggests that arbitrarily many consecutive breaks may be achievable, offering further insight into a question posed by Galvin [D. Galvin, Trees with non log-concave independent set sequences, arXiv:2502.10654v1, 2025].

Domination polynomial of co-maximal graphs of integer modulo ring
We investigate the domination polynomial of the co-maximal graph $Γ(\mathbb{Z}_n)$ related to the ring of integers modulo $n$. Explicit formulas are derived for \( n = p^{n_1} \) and \( n = p^{n_1}q^{n_2} \), demonstrating that the resulting polynomials exhibit unimodality and log-concavity. For general $n$, we present structural expressions that connect $D(Γ(\mathbb{Z}_n),x)$ to appropriate induced subgraphs. Finally, we examine domination roots and establish bounds for their moduli using the Eneström--Kakeya theorem.

Explicit Formulas and Unimodality Phenomena for General Position Polynomials
The general position problem in graphs seeks the largest set of vertices such that no three vertices lie on a common geodesic. Its counting refinement, the general position polynomial $ψ(G)$, asks for all such possible sets. In this paper, We describe general position sets for several classes of graphs and provide explicit formulas for the general position polynomials of complete multipartite graphs. We specialize to balanced complete multipartite graphs and show that for part size $r\le 4$, the polynomial $ψ(K_{r,\dots,r})$ is log-concave and unimodal for all numbers of parts, while for larger $r$, counterexamples show that these properties fail. Finally, we analyze the corona $G\circ K_1$ and prove that unimodality of $ψ(G)$ is retained for numerous natural classes (paths, edgeless graphs, combs). This contributes to an open problem, but the general case remains unknown. Our findings support the parallel between general position polynomials and classical position-type parameters, and identify balanced multipartite graphs and coronas as promising testbeds for additional research.

Pseudo-orientable ribbon graphs: Matrix--Quasi-tree Theorem and log-concavity
One of the most important classes of even $Δ$-matroids arises from orientable ribbon graphs, which play a role analogous to that of graphic matroids in matroid theory. Motivated by a natural correspondence between strong $Δ$-matroids and even $Δ$-matroids due to Geelen and Murota, we characterize the class of strong $Δ$-matroids that correspond to orientable ribbon-graphic $Δ$-matroids. These are precisely the $Δ$-matroids associated with what we call pseudo-orientable ribbon graphs. Moreover, we present a geometric construction that transforms a pseudo-orientable ribbon graph into an orientable ribbon graph, thereby realizing this correspondence. As consequences, we obtain the Matrix--Quasi-tree Theorem, the Hurwitz stability of quasi-tree generating polynomials, and a log-concavity result for the sequence counting quasi-trees of size $2i-1$ or $2i$ for pseudo-orientable ribbon graphs. To establish the log-concavity, we generalize Stanley's log-concavity theorem for regular matroids to regular $Δ$-matroids. Finally, we exhibit an infinite family of non-pseudo-orientable ribbon graphs that fail to satisfy the Matrix--Quasi-tree theorem and Hurwitz stability.

Unimodality of independence polynomials of two family of trees
In 1987, Alavi, Malde, Schwenk and Erdős conjectured that the independence polynomials of trees are unimodal. Subsequently, many researchers proposed strengthening this conjecture to log-concavity. In 2023, Kadrawi, Levit, Yosef, and Mizrachi discovered independence polynomials of trees of order 26 that are not log-concave, which led them to construct two infinite families of such polynomials, denoted by $T_{3,m,n}$ and $T_{3,m,n}^*$. In this paper, we show that these two infinite families also satisfy the unimodal conjecture raised by Alavi, Malde, Schwenk, and Erdős.

Log-concavity and unimodality of cluster monomials of type $A_3$
The log-concavity of cluster variables of type $A_n$ and cluster monomials of type $A_2$ was established by Chen-Huang-Sun. It is still a conjecture for the cluster monomials of higher rank. In this paper, we prove the log-concavity and unimodality of the cluster monomials of type $A_3$, a substantially more intricate case. Moreover, we refine and extend this conjecture by considering the unimodality and the strongly isomorphism of cluster algebras.

Equivariant inverse $Z$-polynomials of matroids
Motivated by the notion of the inverse $Z$-polynomial introduced by Ferroni, Matherne, Stevens, and Vecchi, we study the equivariant inverse $Z$-polynomial of a matroid equipped with a finite group. We prove that the coefficients of the equivariant inverse $Z$-polynomials are honest representations and that these polynomials are palindromic. Explicit formulas are obtained for uniform matroids equipped with the symmetric group. The corresponding formulas for $q$-niform matroids are derived using the Comparison Theorem for unipotent representations. For arbitrary equivariant paving matroids, explicit expressions are obtained by relating the polynomials of a matroid to those of its relaxation. We show that these polynomials are equivariantly unimodal and strongly inductively log-concave for both uniform and $q$-niform matroids. Motivated by the properties of equivariant $Z$-polynomials, we conjecture that the coefficients of the equivariant inverse $Z$-polynomials are equivariantly unimodal and strongly equivariantly log-concave.

New Perspectives On The Unimodality Of Domination Polynomials
The domination polynomial of a graph $G$ is given by $D(G,x)=\sum_{k=0}^{n} d_k(G)x^k$ where $d_k(G)$ records the number of $k$-element dominating sets in $G$. A conjecture of Alikhani and Peng asserts that these polynomials have unimodal coefficient sequences. We develop three complementary perspectives that strengthen existing tools for resolving the conjecture. First, we view dominating sets as transversals of the closed neighborhood hypergraph. Motivated by the relationship between the unimodality of a polynomial and its roots, we use this perspective to expand on known root phenomena for domination polynomials. In particular, we obtain a bound on the modulus of domination roots that is linear in the maximum degree of a graph, improving related exponential bounds of Bencs, Csikvári and Regts. The hypergraph viewpoint also yields explicit combinatorial formulas for top coefficients of $D(G,x)$, extending formulas in the literature and offering fruitful ground for combinatorial approaches to the unimodality conjecture. Second, we strengthen the coefficient-ratio method of Beaton and Brown. This includes tightening their inequalities, and combining a union bound for non-dominating $k$-element sets with an overlap correction based on spanning trees. This produces a new parameter $τ_k(G)$ measuring maximal pairwise neighborhood overlap and yields an overlap-corrected sufficient criterion for unimodality. Third, we prove that the domination polynomial of threshold graphs are log-concave, and hence unimodal, by a planar network argument from total positivity. This offers a new tactic for resolving the unimodality of hereditary graph classes.

Volume polynomials
Volume polynomials form a distinguished class of log-concave polynomials with remarkable analytic and combinatorial properties. I will survey realization problems related to them, review fundamental inequalities they satisfy, and discuss applications to the combinatorics of algebraic matroids. These notes are based on lectures given at the 2025 Summer Research Institute in Algebraic Geometry at Colorado State University.
Tree metrics and log-concavity for matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that a set function $ν$ satisfies the gross substitutes property if and only if its homogeneous generating polynomial $Z_{q,ν}$ is a Lorentzian polynomial for all positive $q \le 1$, answering a question of Eur-Huh. We achieve this by giving a rank 1 upper bound for the distance matrix of an ultrametric tree, refining a classical result of Graham-Pollak. This characterization enables us to resolve two open problems that strengthen Mason's log-concavity conjectures for the number of independent sets of a matroid: one posed by Giansiracusa-Rincón-Schleis-Ulirsch for valuated matroids, and two posed by Dowling in 1980 and Zhao in 1985 for ordinary matroids.
