Gluing and Hilbert functions of monomial curves
Published in Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 137 (2009), 2225-2232 • View Publication • BIB
In this article, by using the technique of gluing semigroups, we give infinitely many families of 1-dimensional local rings with non-decreasing Hilbert functions. More significantly, these are local rings whose associated graded rings are not necessarily Cohen-Macaulay. In this sense, we give an effective technique to construct large families of 1-dimensional Gorenstein local rings associated to monomial curves, which support Rossi's conjecture saying that every Gorenstein local ring has non-decreasing Hilbert function.

Enumeration of Graded (3+1)-Avoiding Posets
Published in J. Comb. Theory, Series A 120, Issue 6, August 2013, pp. 1305--1327 • View Publication • BIB
The notion of (3+1)-avoidance has shown up in many places in enumerative combinatorics. The natural goal of enumeration of all (3+1)-avoiding posets remains open. In this paper, we enumerate graded (3+1)-avoiding posets for both reasonable definitions of the word "graded." Our proof consists of a number of structural theorems followed by some generating function magic. We also provide asymptotics for the growth rate of the number of graded (3 + 1)-avoiding posets.

Unitary representations of cyclotomic rational Cherednik algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
We classify the irreducible unitary modules in category O for the rational Cherednik algebras of type G(r,1,n) and give explicit combinatorial formulas for their graded characters. More precisely, we produce a combinatorial algorithm determining, for each r-partition of n, the closed semi-linear set of parameters for which the contravariant form on the irreducible representation with the given r-partition as lowest weight is positive definite. We use this algorithm to give a closed form answer for the Cherednik algebra of the symmetric group (recovering a result of Etingof-Stoica and the author) and the Weyl groups of classical type.

On Two Classes of Closely Related Monomial Ideals
In [7] we obtained a formula for the Hilbert depth of squarefree Veronese ideals in a standard graded polynomial ring by relating it to the Hilbert depth of powers of the irrelevant maximal ideal. In this paper, we prove that these two Hilbert depth formulas are equivalent to each other. Our result reveals that there is a strong connection between these two classes of seemingly unrelated monomial ideals. We conjecture that their Stanley depths are equivalent as well.

Multivariate Diagonal Coinvariant Spaces for Complex Reflection Groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
For finite complex reflexion groups, we consider the graded $W$-modules of diagonally harmonic polynomials in $r$ sets of variables, and show that associated Hilbert series may be described in a global manner, independent of the value of $r$.

Higher Trivariate Diagonal Harmonics via generalized Tamari Posets
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider the graded $§_n$-modules of higher diagonally harmonic polynomials in three sets of variables (the trivariate case), and show that they have interesting ties with generalizations of the Tamari poset and parking functions. In particular we get several nice formulas for the associated Hilbert series and graded Frobenius characteristic. This also leads to entirely new combinatorial formulas.

Counting spanning trees of the hypercube and its $q$-analogs by explicit block diagonalization
The number of spanning trees of a graph $G$ is called the {\em complexity} of $G$ and is denoted $c(G)$. Let C(n) denote the {\em (binary) hypercube} of dimension $n$. A classical result in enumerative combinatorics (based on explicit diagonalization) states that $c(C(n)) = \prod_{k=2}^n (2k)^{n\choose k}$. In this paper we use the explicit block diagonalization methodology to derive formulas for the complexity of two $q$-analogs of C(n), the {\em nonbinary hypercube} $\Cq(n)$, defined for $q\geq 2$, and the {\em vector space analog of the hypercube} $\Cfq(n)$, defined for prime powers $q$. We consider the nonbinary and vector space analogs of the Boolean algebra. We show the existence, in both cases, of a graded Jordan basis (with respect to the up operator) that is orthogonal (with respect to the standard inner product) and we write down explicit formulas for the ratio of the lengths of the successive vectors in the Jordan chains (i.e., the singular values). With respect to (the normalizations of) these bases the Laplacians of $\Cq(n)$ and $\Cfq(n)$ block diagonalize, with quadratically many distinct blocks in the nonbinary case and linearly many distinct blocks in the vector space case, and with each block an explicitly written down real, symmetric, tridiagonal matrix of known multiplicity and size at most $n+1$. In the nonbinary case we further determine the eigenvalues of the blocks, by explicitly writing out the eigenvectors, yielding an explicit formula for $c(\Cq(n))$ (this proof yields new information even in the binary case). In the vector space case we have been unable to determine the eigenvalues of the blocks but we give a useful formula for $c(\Cfq(n))$ involving "small" determinants (of size at most $n$).

Chains of modular elements and shellability
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A. 119 (2012), no. 6, 1315--1327 • View Publication • BIB
Let L be a lattice admitting a left-modular chain of length r, not necessarily maximal. We show that if either L is graded or the chain is modular, then the (r-2)-skeleton of L is vertex-decomposable (hence shellable). This proves a conjecture of Hersh. Under certain circumstances, we can find shellings of higher skeleta. For instance, if the left-modular chain consists of every other element of some maximum length chain, then L itself is shellable. We apply these results to give a new characterization of finite solvable groups in terms of the topology of subgroup lattices. Our main tool relaxes the conditions for an EL-labeling, allowing multiple ascending chains as long as they are lexicographically before non-ascending chains. We extend results from the theory of EL-shellable posets to such labelings. The shellability of certain skeleta is one such result. Another is that a poset with such a labeling is homotopy equivalent (by discrete Morse theory) to a cell complex with cells in correspondence to weakly descending chains.

Kazhdan-Lusztig combinatorics in the moment graph setting
Published in Journal of Algebra 370 (2012), pg 152-170 • View Publication • BIB
Motivated by a question on the graded rank of the stalks of the canonical sheaf on a Bruhat graph, we lift some equalities concerning (parabolic) Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials to this moment graph setting. Our proofs hold also in positive characteristic, under some technical assumptions.

Universal Specht modules for cyclotomic Hecke algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
The graded Specht module $S^λ$ for a cyclotomic Hecke algebra comes with a distinguished generating vector $z^λ\in S^λ$, which can be thought of as a "highest weight vector of weight $λ$". This paper describes the {\em defining relations} for the Specht module $S^λ$ as a graded module generated by $z^λ$. The first three relations say precisely what it means for $z^λ$ to be a highest weight vector of weight $λ$. The remaining relations are homogeneous analogues of the classical {\em Garnir relations}. The homogeneous Garnir relations, which are {\em simpler} than the classical ones, are associated with a remarkable family of homogeneous operators on the Specht module which satisfy the braid relations.

Quantum loop algebras, quiver varieties, and cluster algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
These notes reflect the contents of three lectures given at the workshop of the 14th International Conference on Representations of Algebras (ICRA XIV), held in August 2010 in Tokyo. We first provide an introduction to quantum loop algebras and their finite-dimensional representations. We explain in particular Nakajima's geometric description of the irreducible q-characters in terms of graded quiver varieties. We then present a recent attempt to understand the tensor structure of the category of finite- dimensional representations by means of cluster algebras.

The $f$--vector of the clique complex of chordal graphs and Betti numbers of edge ideals of uniform hypergraphs
We describe the Betti numbers of the edge ideals $I(G)$ of uniform hypergraphs $G$ such that $I(G)$ has linear graded free resolution. We give an algebraic equation system and some inequalities for the components of the $f$--vector of the clique complex of an arbitrary chordal graph. Finally we present an explicit formula for the multiplicity of the Stanley-Reisner ring of the edge ideals of any chordal graph.

Algebraic properties of product of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ and $H$ be two simple graphs and let $G*H$ denotes the graph theoretical product of $G$ by $H$. In this paper we provide some results on graded Betti numbers, Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity, projective dimension, $h$-vector, and Hilbert series of $G*H$ in terms of that information of $G$ and $H$. To do this, we will provide explicit formulae to compute graded Betti numbers, $h$-vector, and Hilbert series of disjoint union of complexes. Also we will prove that the family of graphs whose regularity equal the maximum number of pairwise $3$-disjoint edges, is closed under product of graphs.

The incidence Hopf algebra of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The graph algebra is a commutative, cocommutative, graded, connected incidence Hopf algebra, whose basis elements correspond to finite simple graphs and whose Hopf product and coproduct admit simple combinatorial descriptions. We give a new formula for the antipode in the graph algebra in terms of acyclic orientations; our formula contains many fewer terms than Takeuchi's and Schmitt's more general formulas for the antipode in an incidence Hopf algebra. Applications include several formulas (some old and some new) for evaluations of the Tutte polynomial.

Cofree compositions of coalgebras
We develop the notion of the composition of two coalgebras, which arises naturally in higher category theory and in the theory of species. We prove that the composition of two cofree coalgebras is again cofree, and we give sufficient conditions that ensure the composition is a one-sided Hopf algebra. We show these conditions are satisfied when one coalgebra is a graded Hopf operad D and the other is a connected graded coalgebra with coalgebra map to D. We conclude by computing the primitive elements for compositions of coalgebras built on the vertices of multiplihedra, composihedra, and hypercubes.

On the flag f-vector of a graded lattice with nontrivial homology
Published • View Publication • BIB
It is proved that the Boolean algebra of rank n minimizes the flag f-vector among all graded lattices of rank n, whose proper part has nontrivial top-dimensional homology. The analogous statement for the flag h-vector is conjectured in the Cohen-Macaulay case.

Cofree compositions of coalgebras (extended abstract)
Published • View Publication • BIB
We develop the notion of the composition of two coalgebras, which arises naturally in higher category theory and the theory of species. We prove that the composition of two cofree coalgebras is cofree and give conditions which imply that the composition is a one-sided Hopf algebra. These conditions hold when one coalgebra is a graded Hopf operad D and the other is a connected graded coalgebra with coalgebra map to D. We conclude by discussing these structures for compositions with bases the vertices of multiplihedra, composihedra, and hypercubes.
Deformed diagonal harmonic polynomials for complex reflection groups

We introduce deformations of the space of (multi-diagonal) harmonic polynomials for any finite complex reflection group of the form W=G(m,p,n), and give supporting evidence that this space seems to always be isomorphic, as a graded W-module, to the undeformed version.

We define two coproducts for cycle-free oriented graphs, thus building up two commutative con- nected graded Hopf algebras, such that one is a comodule-coalgebra on the other, thus generalizing the result obtained previously for Hopf algebras of rooted trees.

Polytopes, Hopf algebras and Quasi-symmetric functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we use the technique of Hopf algebras and quasi-symmetric functions to study the combinatorial polytopes. Consider the free abelian group $\mathcal{P}$ generated by all combinatorial polytopes. There are two natural bilinear operations on this group defined by a direct product $\times $ and a join $\divideontimes$ of polytopes. $(\mathcal{P},\times)$ is a commutative associative bigraded ring of polynomials, and $\mathcal{RP}=(\mathbb Z\varnothing\oplus\mathcal{P},\divideontimes)$ is a commutative associative threegraded ring of polynomials. The ring $\mathcal{RP}$ has the structure of a graded Hopf algebra. It turns out that $\mathcal{P}$ has a natural Hopf comodule structure over $\mathcal{RP}$. Faces operators $d_k$ that send a polytope to the sum of all its $(n-k)$-dimensional faces define on both rings the Hopf module structures over the universal Leibnitz-Hopf algebra $\mathcal{Z}$. This structure gives a ring homomorphism $\R\to\Qs\otimes\R$, where $\R$ is $\mathcal{P}$ or $\mathcal{RP}$. Composing this homomorphism with the characters $P^n\toα^n$ of $\mathcal{P}$, $P^n\toα^{n+1}$ of $\mathcal{RP}$, and with the counit we obtain the ring homomorphisms $f\colon\mathcal{P}\to\Qs[α]$, $f_{\mathcal{RP}}\colon\mathcal{RP}\to\Qs[α]$, and $\F^*:\mathcal{RP}\to\Qs$, where $F$ is the Ehrenborg transformation. We describe the images of these homomorphisms in terms of functional equations, prove that these images are rings of polynomials over $\mathbb Q$, and find the relations between the images, the homomorphisms and the Hopf comodule structures. For each homomorphism $f,\;f_{\mathcal{RP}}$, and $\F$ the images of two polytopes coincide if and only if they have equal flag $f$-vectors. Therefore algebraic structures on the images give the information about flag $f$-vectors of polytopes.
