Lefschetz properties and the Veronese construction
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we investigate Lefschetz properties of Veronese subalgebras. We show that, for a sufficiently large $r$, the $r$\textsuperscript{th} Veronese subalgebra of a Cohen-Macaulay standard graded $K$-algebra has properties similar to the weak and strong Lefschetz properties, which we call the `almost weak' and `almost strong' Lefschetz properties. By using this result, we obtain new results on $h$- and $g$-polynomials of Veronese subalgebras.

Sequentially Cohen--Macaulayness of bigraded modules
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $K$ be a field, $S=K[x_1,\ldots,x_m, y_1,\ldots,y_n]$ be a standard bigraded polynomial ring and $M$ a finitely generated bigraded $S$-module. In this paper we study sequentially Cohen--Macaulayness of $M$ with respect to $Q=(y_1,\ldots,y_n)$. We characterize the sequentially Cohen--Macaulayness of $L\tensor_KN$ with respect to $Q$ as an $S$-module when $L$ and $N$ are non-zero finitely generated graded modules over $K[x_1, \dots, x_m]$ and $K[y_1, \dots, y_n]$, respectively. All hypersurface rings that are sequentially Cohen--Macaulay with respect to $Q$ are classified.

Seminormality and local cohomology of toric face rings
Published • View Publication • BIB
We characterize the toric face rings that are normal (respectively seminormal). Extending results about local cohomology of Brun, Bruns, Ichim, Li and Römer of seminormal monoid rings and Stanley toric face rings, we prove the vanishing of certain graded parts of local cohomology of seminormal toric face rings. The combinatorial formula we obtain generalizes Hochster's formula. We also characterize all (necessarily seminormal) toric face rings that are $F$-pure or $F$-split over a field of characteristic $p>0$. An example is given to show that $F$-injectivity does not behave well with respect to face projections of toric face rings. Finally, it is shown that weakly $F$-regular toric face rings are normal affine monoid rings.

Drinfeld Orbifold Algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
We define Drinfeld orbifold algebras as filtered algebras deforming the skew group algebra (semi-direct product) arising from the action of a finite group on a polynomial ring. They simultaneously generalize Weyl algebras, graded (or Drinfeld) Hecke algebras, rational Cherednik algebras, symplectic reflection algebras, and universal enveloping algebras of Lie algebras with group actions. We give necessary and sufficient conditions on defining parameters to obtain Drinfeld orbifold algebras in two general formats, both algebraic and homological. We explain the connection between Hochschild cohomology and a Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt property explicitly (using Gerstenhaber brackets). We also classify those deformations of skew group algebras which arise as Drinfeld orbifold algebras and give applications for abelian groups.

Quantum Drinfeld Hecke Algebras
Published in Can. J. Math.-J. Can. Math. 66 (2014) 874-901 • View Publication • BIB
We consider finite groups acting on quantum (or skew) polynomial rings. Deformations of the semidirect product of the quantum polynomial ring with the acting group extend symplectic reflection algebras and graded Hecke algebras to the quantum setting over a field of arbitrary characteristic. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for such algebras to satisfy a Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt property using the theory of noncommutative Groebner bases. We include applications to the case of abelian groups and the case of groups acting on coordinate rings of quantum planes. In addition, we classify graded automorphisms of the coordinate ring of quantum 3-space. In characteristic zero, Hochschild cohomology gives an elegant description of the Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt conditions.

Derived Equivalence in Surface Algebras of Genus 0 via Graded Equivalence
Published • View Publication • BIB
We determine some of the derived equivalences of a class of gentle algebras called surface algebras. These algebras are constructed from an unpunctured Riemann surface of genus 0 with boundary and marked points by introducing cuts in internal triangles of an arbitrary triangulation of the surface. In particular, we fix a triangulation of a surface and determine when different cuts produce derived equivalent algebras.

sl(2) Operators and Markov Processes on Branching Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We present a unified approach to various examples of Markov dynamics on partitions studied by Borodin, Olshanski, Fulman, and the author. Our technique generalizes the Kerov's operators first appeared in [Okounkov, arXiv:math/0002135], and also stems from the study of duality of graded graphs in [Fomin, 1994]. Our main object is a countable branching graph carrying an sl(2,C)-module of a special kind. Using this structure, we introduce distinguished probability measures on the floors of the graph, and define two related types of Markov dynamics associated with these measures. We study spectral properties of the dynamics, and our main result is the explicit description of eigenfunctions of the Markov generator of one of the processes. For the Young graph our approach reconstructs the z-measures on partitions and the associated dynamics studied by Borodin and Olshanski [arXiv:math-ph/0409075, arXiv:0706.1034]. The generator of the dynamics of [arXiv:math-ph/0409075] is diagonal in the basis of the Meixner symmetric functions introduced recently by Olshanski [arXiv:1009.2037, arXiv:1103.5848]. We give new proofs to some of the results of these two papers. Other graphs to which our technique is applicable include the Pascal triangle, the Kingman graph (with the two-parameter Poisson-Dirichlet measures), the Schur graph and the general Young graph with Jack edge multiplicities.

Equivariant cohomology and the Varchenko-Gelfand filtration
Published • View Publication • BIB
The cohomology of the configuration space of n points in R^3 admits a symmetric group action and has been shown to be isomorphic to the regular representation. One way to prove this is by defining an S^1-action whose fixed point set is the complement of the braid arrangement and using equivariant cohomology to show that the cohomology of the configuration space is the associated graded algebra of the cohomology of the arrangement complement. In this paper, we will extend this result to the setting of affine subspace arrangements coming from real hyperplane arrangements using similar methods. We also provide a presentation of the equivariant cohomology ring and extend some results to the setting of oriented matroids.

Non-vanishingness of Betti numbers of edge ideals
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given finite simple graph one can associate the edge ideal. In this paper we discuss the non-vanishingness of the graded Betti numbers of edge ideals in terms of the original graph. In particular, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for a chordal graph on which the graded Betti number does not vanish and characterize the graded Betti number for a forest. Moreover we characterize the projective dimension for a chordal graph.

Quiver Schur algebras for linear quivers
Published in Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. (3) 110 (2015), no. 6, 1315-1386 • View Publication • BIB
We define a graded quasi-hereditary covering for the cyclotomic quiver Hecke algebras $\mathcal{R}^Λ_n$ of type $A$ when $e=0$ (the linear quiver) or $e\ge n$. We show that these algebras are quasi-hereditary graded cellular algebras by giving explicit homogeneous bases for them. When $e=0$ we show that the KLR grading on the quiver Hecke algebras is compatible with the gradings on parabolic category $\mathcal{O}$ previously introduced in the works of Beilinson, Ginzburg and Soergel and Backelin. As a consequence, we show that when $e=0$ our graded Schur algebras are Koszul over field of characteristic zero. Finally, we give an LLT-like algorithm for computing the graded decomposition numbers of the quiver Schur algebras in characteristic zero when $e=0$.
Computations for Coxeter arrangements and Solomon's descent algebra: Groups of rank three and four
Published • View Publication • BIB
In recent papers we have refined a conjecture of Lehrer and Solomon expressing the characters of a finite Coxeter group $W$ afforded by the homogeneous components of its Orlik-Solomon algebra as sums of characters induced from linear characters of centralizers of elements of $W$. Our refined conjecture also relates the Orlik-Solomon characters above to the terms of a decomposition of the regular character of $W$ related to the descent algebra of $W$. A consequence of our conjecture is that both the regular character of $W$ and the character of the Orlik-Solomon algebra have parallel, graded decompositions as sums of characters induced from linear characters of centralizers of elements of $W$, one for each conjugacy class of elements of $W$. The refined conjecture has been proved for symmetric and dihedral groups. In this paper we develop algorithmic tools to prove the conjecture computationally for a given finite Coxeter group. We use these tools to verify the conjecture for all finite Coxeter groups of rank three and four, thus providing previously unknown decompositions of the regular characters and the Orlik-Solomon characters of these groups.

Quantum cluster algebras and fusion products
Published • View Publication • BIB
$Q$-systems are recursion relations satisfied by the characters of the restrictions of special finite-dimensional modules of quantum affine algebras. They can also be viewed as mutations in certain cluster algebras, which have a natural quantum deformation. In this paper, we explain the relation in the simply-laced case between the resulting quantum $Q$-systems and the graded tensor product of Feigin and Loktev. We prove the graded version of the $M=N$ identities, and write expressions for these as non-commuting evaluated multi-residues of suitable products of solutions of the quantum $Q$-system. This leads to a simple reformulation of Feigin and Loktev's fusion coefficients as matrix elements in a representation of the quantum $Q$-system algebra.

A tour of the Weak and Strong Lefschetz Properties
Published • View Publication • BIB
An artinian graded algebra, $A$, is said to have the Weak Lefschetz property (WLP) if multiplication by a general linear form has maximal rank in every degree. A vast quantity of work has been done studying and applying this property, touching on numerous and diverse areas of algebraic geometry, commutative algebra, and combinatorics. Amazingly, though, much of this work has a "common ancestor" in a theorem originally due to Stanley, although subsequently reproved by others. In this expository paper we describe the different directions in which research has moved starting with this theorem, and we discuss some of the open questions that continue to motivate current research.
On the structure of Borel stable abelian subalgebras in infinitesimal symmetric spaces
Published in Selecta Mathematica, Vol.19, Issue 2 (2013), 399-437 • View Publication • BIB
Let g=g_0+g_1 be a Z_2-graded Lie algebra. We study the posets of abelian subalgebras of g_1 which are stable w.r.t. a Borel subalgebra of g_0. In particular, we find out a natural parametrization of maximal elements and dimension formulas for them. We recover as special cases several results of Kostant, Panyushev, Suter.

Hilbert depth of graded modules over polynomial rings in two variables
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this article we mainly consider the positively Z-graded polynomial ring R=F[X,Y] over an arbitrary field F and Hilbert series of finitely generated graded R-modules. The central result is an arithmetic criterion for such a series to be the Hilbert series of some R-module of positive depth. In the generic case, that is, the degrees of X and Y being coprime, this criterion can be formulated in terms of the numerical semigroup generated by those degrees.

Note on resonance varieties
We study the irreducibility of resonance varieties of graded rings over an exterior algebra E with particular attention to Orlik-Solomon algebras. We prove that for a stable monomial ideal in E the first resonance variety is irreducible. If J is an Orlik- Solomon ideal of an essential central hyperplane arrangement, then we show that its first resonance variety is irreducible if and only if the subideal of J generated by all degree 2 elements has a 2-linear resolution. As an application we characterize those hyperplane arrangements of rank less than or equal to 3 where J is componentwise linear. Higher resonance varieties are also considered. We prove results supporting a conjecture of Schenck-Suciu relating the Betti numbers of the linear strand of J and its first resonance variety. A counter example is constructed that this conjecture is not true for arbitrary graded ideals.

Log-concavity of asymptotic multigraded Hilbert series
Published in Proceedings of the American Mathematical Society 141 (2013) 1883-1892 • View Publication • BIB
We study the linear map sending the numerator of the rational function representing the Hilbert series of a module to that of its r-th Veronese submodule. We show that the asymptotic behaviour as r tends to infinity depends on the multidegree of the module and the underlying positively multigraded polynomial ring. More importantly, we give a polyhedral description for the asymptotic polynomial and prove that the coefficients are log-concave. In particular, we extend some results by Beck-Stapledon and Diaconis-Fulman beyond the standard graded situation.

Shuffle algebras, homology, and consecutive pattern avoidance
Published in Algebra & Number theory, Vol. 7 (2013), No. 3, 673-700 • View Publication • BIB
Shuffle algebras are monoids for an unconvential monoidal category structure on graded vector spaces. We present two homological results on shuffle algebras with monomial relations, and use them to prove exact and asymptotic results on consecutive pattern avoidance in permutations.

The boundary of the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph: A new approach
Published in Advances in Mathematics 230 (2012), 1738-1779 • View Publication • BIB
The Gelfand-Tsetlin graph is an infinite graded graph that encodes branching of irreducible characters of the unitary groups. The boundary of the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph has at least three incarnations --- as a discrete potential theory boundary, as the set of finite indecomposable characters of the infinite-dimensional unitary group, and as the set of doubly infinite totally positive sequences. An old deep result due to Albert Edrei and Dan Voiculescu provides an explicit description of the boundary; it can be realized as a region in an infinite-dimensional coordinate space. The paper contains a novel approach to the Edrei-Voiculescu theorem. It is based on a new explicit formula for the number of semi-standard Young tableaux of a given skew shape (or of Gelfand-Tsetlin schemes of trapezoidal shape). The formula is obtained via the theory of symmetric functions, and new Schur-like symmetric functions play a key role in the derivation.

Enumerative $g$-theorems for the Veronese construction for formal power series and graded algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $(a_n)_{n \geq 0}$ be a sequence of integers such that its generating series satisfies $\sum_{n \geq 0} a_nt^n = \frac{h(t)}{(1-t)^d}$ for some polynomial $h(t)$. For any $r \geq 1$ we study the coefficient sequence of the numerator polynomial $h_0(a^{<r >}) +...+ h_{λ'}(a^{<r >}) t^{λ'}$ of the $r$\textsuperscript{th} Veronese series $a^{<r >}(t) = \sum_{n \geq 0} a_{nr} t^n$. Under mild hypothesis we show that the vector of successive differences of this sequence up to the $\lfloor \frac{d}{2} \rfloor$\textsuperscript{th} entry is the $f$-vector of a simplicial complex for large $r$. In particular, the sequence satisfies the consequences of the unimodality part of the $g$-conjecture. We give applications of the main result to Hilbert series of Veronese algebras of standard graded algebras and the $f$-vectors of edgewise subdivisions of simplicial complexes.
