Generalized permutations related to the degenerate Eulerian numbers
In this work we propose a combinatorial model that generalizes the standard definition of permutation. Our model generalizes the degenerate Eulerian polynomials and numbers of Carlitz from 1979 and provides missing combinatorial proofs for some relations on the degenerate Eulerian numbers.
A unified approach to combinatorial triangles: a generalized Eulerian polynomial
Motivated by the classical Eulerian number, descent and excedance numbers in the hyperoctahedral groups, an triangular array from staircase tableaux and so on, we study a triangular array $[\mathcal {T}_{n,k}]_{n,k\ge 0}$ satisfying the recurrence relation: \begin{equation*} \mathcal {T}_{n,k}=λ(a_0n+a_1k+a_2)\mathcal {T}_{n-1,k}+(b_0n+b_1k+b_2)\mathcal {T}_{n-1,k-1}+\frac{cd}λ(n-k+1)\mathcal {T}_{n-1,k-2} \end{equation*} with $\mathcal {T}_{0,0}=1$ and $\mathcal {T}_{n,k}=0$ unless $0\le k\le n$. We derive a functional transformation for its row-generating function $\mathcal{T}_n(x)$ from the row-generating function $A_n(x)$ of another array $[A_{n,k}]_{n,k}$ satisfying a two-term recurrence relation. Based on this transformation, we can get properties of $\mathcal {T}_{n,k}$ and $\mathcal{T}_n(x)$ including nonnegativity, log-concavity, real rootedness, explicit formula and so on. Then we extend the famous Frobenius formula, the $γ$ positivity decomposition and the David-Barton formula for the classical Eulerian polynomial to those of a generalized Eulerian polynomial. We also get an identity for the generalized Eulerian polynomial with the general derivative polynomial.
Finally, we apply our results to an array from the Lambert function, a triangular array from staircase tableaux and the alternating-runs triangle of type $B$ in a unified approach.

The class of Worpitzky-compatible subarrangements of a Weyl arrangement together with an associated Eulerian polynomial was recently introduced by Ashraf, Yoshinaga and the first author, which brings the characteristic and Ehrhart quasi-polynomials into one formula. The subarrangements of the braid arrangement, the Weyl arrangement of type $A$, are known as the graphic arrangements. We prove that the Worpitzky-compatible graphic arrangements are characterized by cocomparability graphs. Our main result yields new formulas for the chromatic and graphic Eulerian polynomials of cocomparability graphs.

In this paper we first present summation formulas for $k$-order Eulerian polynomials and $1/k$-Eulerian polynomials. We then present combinatorial expansions of $(c(x)D)^n$ in terms of inversion sequences as well as $k$-Young tableaux, where $c(x)$ is a differentiable function in the indeterminate $x$ and $D$ is the derivative with respect to $x$. We define the $g$-indexes of $k$-Young tableaux and Young tableaux, which have important applications in combinatorics. By establishing some relations between $k$-Young tableaux and standard Young tableaux, we express Eulerian polynomials, second-order Eulerian polynomials, André polynomials and the generating polynomials of gamma coefficients of Eulerian polynomials in terms of standard Young tableaux, which imply a deep connection among these polynomials.

The Stern poset $\mathcal{S}$ is a graded infinite poset naturally associated to Stern's triangle, which was defined by Stanley analogously to Pascal's triangle. Let $P_n$ denote the interval of $\mathcal{S}$ from the unique element of row $0$ of Stern's triangle to the $n$-th element of row $r$ for sufficiently large $r$. For $n\geq 1$ let \begin{align*} L_n(q)&=2\cdot\left(\sum_{k=1}^{2^n-1}A_{P_k}(q)\right)+A_{P_{2^n}}(q), \end{align*} where $A_{P}(q)$ represents the corresponding $P$-Eulerian polynomial. For any $n\geq 1$ Stanley conjectured that $L_n(q)$ has only real zeros and $L_{4n+1}(q)$ is divisible by $L_{2n}(q)$. In this paper we obtain a simple recurrence relation satisfied by $L_n(q)$ and affirmatively solve Stanley's conjectures. We also establish the asymptotic normality of the coefficients of $L_n(q)$.
A note on Stirling permutations
In this note we generalize an identity of John Riordan and Robert Donaghey relating the enumerator for Stirling permutations to the Eulerian polynomials.
The gamma-positivity of Eulerian polynomials and succession statistics
This paper is concerned with multivariate refinements of the gamma-positivity of Eulerian polynomials by using the succession and fixed point statistics. Properties of the enumerative polynomials for permutations, signed permutations and derangements, including generating functions and gamma-positivity are studied, which generalize and unify earlier results of Athanasiadis, Brenti, Chow, Petersen, Roselle, Stembridge, Shin and Zeng. In particular, we derive a formula expressing the joint distribution of excedance number and negative number statistics over the type B derangements in terms of the derangement polynomials.

The closure of a generic torus orbit in the flag variety $G/B$ of type $A$ is known to be a permutohedral variety and its Poincare polynomial agrees with the Eulerian polynomial. In this paper, we study the Poincare polynomial of a generic torus orbit closure in a Schubert variety in $G/B$. When the generic torus orbit closure in a Schubert variety is smooth, its Poincare polynomial is known to agree with a certain generalization of the Eulerian polynomial. We extend this result to an arbitrary generic torus orbit closure which is not necessarily smooth.

Stirling permutations were introduced by Gessel and Stanley, who used their enumeration by the number of descents to give a combinatorial interpretation of certain polynomials related to Stirling numbers.
Quasi-Stirling permutations, which can be viewed as labeled noncrossing matchings, were introduced by Archer et al. as a natural extension of Stirling permutations. Janson's correspondence between Stirling permutations and labeled increasing plane trees extends to a bijection between quasi-Stirling permutations and the same set of trees without the increasing restriction.
Archer et al. posed the problem of enumerating quasi-Stirling permutations by the number of descents, and conjectured that there are $(n+1)^{n-1}$ such permutations of size $n$ having the maximum number of descents. In this paper we prove their conjecture, and we give the generating function for quasi-Stirling permutations by the number of descents, expressed as a compositional inverse of the generating function of Eulerian polynomials. We also find the analogue for quasi-Stirling permutations of the main result from Gessel and Stanley's paper. We prove that the distribution of descents on these permutations is asymptotically normal, and that the roots of the corresponding quasi-Stirling polynomials are all real, in analogy to Bóna's results for Stirling permutations.
Finally, we generalize our results to a one-parameter family of permutations that extends $k$-Stirling permutations, and we refine them by also keeping track of the number of ascents and the number of plateaus.

We define some generalizations of the classical descent and inversion statistics on signed permutations that arise from the work of Sack and Ulfarsson [20] and called after width-k descents and width-k inversionsof type A in Davis's work [8]. Using the aforementioned new statistics, we derive some new generalizations of Eulerian polynomials of type A, B and D. It should also be noticed that we establish the Gamma-positivity of the "width-k" Eulerian polynomials and we give a combinatorial interpretation of finite sequences associated to these new polynomials using quasisymmetric functions and P-partition in Petersen's work [18].

Let $\mathcal{A}$ be a Weyl arrangement. We introduce and study the notion of $\mathcal{A}$-Eulerian polynomial producing an Eulerian-like polynomial for any subarrangement of $\mathcal{A}$. This polynomial together with shift operator describe how the characteristic quasi-polynomial of a new class of arrangements containing ideal subarrangements of $\mathcal{A}$ can be expressed in terms of the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial of the fundamental alcove. The method can also be extended to define two types of deformed Weyl subarrangements containing the families of the extended Shi, Catalan, Linial arrangements and to compute their characteristic quasi-polynomials. We obtain several known results in the literature as specializations, including the formula of the characteristic polynomial of $\mathcal{A}$ via Ehrhart theory due to Athanasiadis (1996), Blass-Sagan (1998), Suter (1998) and Kamiya-Takemura-Terao (2010); and the formula relating the number of coweight lattice points in the fundamental parallelepiped with the Lam-Postnikov Eulerian polynomial due to the third author.

In 2008 Brändén proved a $(p,q)$-analogue of the $γ$-expansion formula for Eulerian polynomials and conjectured the divisibility of the $γ$-coefficient $γ_{n,k}(p,q)$ by $(p+q)^k$. As a follow-up, in 2012 Shin and Zeng showed that the fraction $γ_{n,k}(p, q)/(p + q)^k$ is a polynomial in $\N[p,q]$. The aim of this paper is to give a combinatorial interpretation of the latter polynomial in terms of André permutations, a class of objects first defined and studied by Foata, Schützenberger and Strehl in the 1970s. It turns out that our result provides an answer to a recent open problem of Han, which was the impetus of this paper.

For a poset whose Hasse diagram is a rooted plane forest $F$, we consider the corresponding tree descent polynomial $A_F(q)$, which is a generating function of the number of descents of the labelings of $F$. When the forest is a path, $A_F(q)$ specializes to the classical Eulerian polynomial. We prove that the coefficient sequence of $A_F(q)$ is unimodal and that if $\{T_{n}\}$ is a sequence of trees with $|T_{n}| = n$ and maximal down degree $D_{n} = O(n^{0.5-ε})$ then the number of descents in a labeling of $T_{n}$ is asymptotically normal.

A formula of Stembridge states that the permutation peak polynomials and descent polynomials are connected via a quadratique transformation. The aim of this paper is to establish the cycle analogue of Stembridge's formula by using cycle peaks and excedances of permutations. We prove a series of new general formulae expressing polynomials counting permutations by various excedance statistics in terms of refined Eulerian polynomials. Our formulae are comparable with Zhuang's generalizations [Adv. in Appl. Math. 90 (2017) 86-144] using descent statistics of permutations. Our methods include permutation enumeration techniques involving variations of classical bijections from permutations to Laguerre histories, explicit continued fraction expansions of combinatorial generating functions in Shin and Zeng [European J. Combin. 33 (2012), no. 2, 111--127] and cycle version of modified Foata-Strehl action. We also prove similar formulae for restricted permutations such as derangements and permutations avoiding certain patterns. Moreover, we provide new combinatorial interpretations for the $γ$-coefficients of the inversion polynomials restricted on $321$-avoiding permutations.
Eulerian polynomials for multipermutations and signed multipermutations
In this paper, we study Eulerian polynomials for permutations and signed permutations of the multiset $\{1,1,2,2,\ldots,n,n\}$. Properties of these polynomials, including recurrence relations and unimodality are discussed. In particular, we give a unified proof of the fact that these polynomials are unimodal with modes in the middle.

We derive a formula expressing the joint distribution of the cyclic valley number and excedance number statistics over a fixed conjugacy class of the symmetric group in terms of Eulerian polynomials. Our proof uses a slight extension of Sun and Wang's cyclic valley-hopping action as well as a formula of Brenti. Along the way, we give a new proof for the $γ$-positivity of the excedance number distribution over any fixed conjugacy class along with a combinatorial interpretation of the $γ$-coefficients.
The alternating run polynomials of permutations
In this paper, we first consider a generalization of the David-Barton identity which relate the alternating run polynomials to Eulerian polynomials. By using context-free grammars, we then present a combinatorial interpretation of a family of q-alternating run polynomials. Furthermore, we introduce the definition of semi-gamma-positive polynomial and we show the semi-gamma-positivity of the alternating run polynomials of dual Stirling permutations. A connection between the up-down run polynomials of permutations and the alternating run polynomials of dual Stirling permutations is established.
A new encoding of permutations by Laguerre histories
We construct a bijection from permutations to some weighted Motzkin paths known as Laguerre histories. As one application of our bijection, a neat $q$-$γ$-positivity expansion of the $(\inv,\exc)$-$q$-Eulerian polynomials is obtained.
Real-rootedness of variations of Eulerian polynomials
The binomial Eulerian polynomials, introduced by Postnikov, Reiner, and Williams, are $γ$-positive polynomials and can be interpreted as $h$-polynomials of certain flag simplicial polytopes. Recently, Athanasiadis studied analogs of these polynomials for colored permutations. In this paper, we generalize them to $\mathbf{s}$-inversion sequences and prove that these new polynomials have only real roots by the method of interlacing polynomials. Three applications of this result are presented. The first one is to prove the real-rootedness of binomial Eulerian polynomials, which confirms a conjecture of Ma, Ma, and Yeh. The second one is to prove that the symmetric decomposition of binomial Eulerian polynomials for colored permutations is real-rooted. Thirdly, our polynomials for certain $\mathbf{s}$-inversion sequences are shown to admit a similar geometric interpretation related to edgewise subdivisions of simplexes.
On enumerators of Smirnov words by descents and cyclic descents
A Smirnov word is a word over the positive integers in which adjacent letters must be different. A symmetric function enumerating these words by descent number arose in the work of Shareshian and the second named author on $q$-Eulerian polynomials, where a $t$-analog of a formula of Carlitz, Scoville, and Vaughan for enumerating Smirnov words is proved. A symmetric function enumerating a circular version of these words by cyclic descent number arose in the work of the first named author on chromatic quasisymmetric functions of directed graphs, where a $t$-analog of a formula of Stanley for enumerating circular Smirnov words is proved.
In this paper we obtain new $t$-analogs of the Carlitz-Scoville-Vaughan formula and the Stanley formula in which the roles of descent number and cyclic descent number are switched. These formulas show that the Smirnov word enumerators are polynomials in $t$ whose coefficients are e-positive symmetric functions. We also obtain expansions in the power sum basis and the fundamental quasisymmetric function basis, complementing earlier results of Shareshian and the authors.
Our work relies on studying refinements of the Smirnov word enumerators that count certain restricted classes of Smirnov words by descent number. Applications to variations of $q$-Eulerian polynomials and to the chromatic quasisymmetric functions introduced by Shareshian and the second named author are also presented.
