On the geometry of flag Hilbert-Poincaré series for matroids
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics, Volume 6 (2023) no. 3, pp. 623-638 • View Publication • BIB
We extend the definition of coarse flag Hilbert--Poincaré series to matroids; these series arise in the context of local Igusa zeta functions associated to hyperplane arrangements. We study these series in the case of oriented matroids by applying geometric and combinatorial tools related to their topes. In this case, we prove that the numerators of these series are coefficient-wise bounded below by the Eulerian polynomial and equality holds if and only if all topes are simplicial. Moreover this yields a sufficient criterion for non-orientability of matroids of arbitrary rank.

Rooted quasi-Stirling permutations of general multisets
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a general multiset $\mathcal{M}=\{1^{m_1},2^{m_2},\ldots,n^{m_n}\}$, where $i$ appears $m_i$ times, a multipermutation $π$ of $\mathcal{M}$ is called {\em quasi-Stirling}, if it contains no subword of the form $abab$ with $a\neq b$. We designate exactly one entry of $π$, say $k\in \mathcal{M}$, which is not the leftmost entry among all entries with the same value, by underlining it in $π$, and we refer to the pair $(π,k)$ as a quasi-Stirling multipermutation of $\mathcal{M}$ rooted at $k$. By introducing certain vertex and edge labeled trees, we give a new bijective proof of an identity due to Yan, Yang, Huang and Zhu, which links the enumerator of rooted quasi-Stirling multipermutations by the numbers of ascents, descents, and plateaus, with the exponential generating function of the {\em bivariate Eulerian polynomials}. This identity can be viewed as a natural extension of Elizalde's result on $k$-quasi-Stirling permutations, and our bijective approach to proving it enables us to: (1) prove bijectively a Carlitz type identity involving quasi-Stirling polynomials on multisets that was first obtained by Yan and Zhu; (2) confirm a recent partial $γ$-positivity conjecture due to Lin, Ma and Zhang, and find a combinatorial interpretation of the $γ$-coefficients in terms of two new statistics defined on quasi-Stirling multipermutations called sibling descents and double sibling descents.

The Gessel Correspondence and the Partial $γ$-Positivity of the Eulerian Polynomials on Multiset Stirling Permutations
Published • View Publication • BIB
Pondering upon the grammatical labeling of 0-1-2 increasing plane trees, we come to the realization that the grammatical labels play a role as records of chopped off leaves of the original increasing binary trees. While such an understanding is purely psychological, it does give rise to an efficient apparatus to tackle the partial $γ$-positivity of the Eulearian polynomials on multiset Stirling permutations, as long as we bear in mind the combinatorial meanings of the labels $x$ and $y$ in the Gessel representation of a $k$-Stirling permutation by means of an increasing $(k+1)$-ary tree. More precisely, we introduce a Foata-Strehl action on the Gessel trees resulting in an interpretation of the partial $γ$-coefficients of the aforementioned Eulerian polynomials, different from the ones found by Lin-Ma-Zhang and Yan-Huang-Yang. In particular, our strategy can be adapted to deal with the partial $γ$-coefficients of the second order Eulerian polynomials, which in turn can be readily converted to the combinatorial formulation due to Ma-Ma-Yeh in connection with certain statistics of Stirling permutations.

Permanent identities, combinatorial sequences, and permutation statistics
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we confirm six conjectures on the exact values of some permanents, relating them to the Genocchi numbers of the first and second kinds as well as the Euler numbers. For example, we prove that $$\mathrm{per}\left[\left\lfloor\frac{2j-k}{n}\right\rfloor\right]_{1\le j,k\le n}=2(2^{n+1}-1)B_{n+1},$$ where $B_0,B_1,B_2,\ldots$ are the Bernoulli numbers. We also show that $$ \mathrm{per}\left[\mathrm{sgn}\left(\cosπ\frac{i+j}{n+1}\right)\right]_{1\le i,j\le n}=\begin{cases} -\sum_{k=0}^m\binom{m}{k}E_{2k+1}&\quad\text{if}\ n=2m+1,\\ \sum_{k=0}^m\binom{m}{k}E_{2k}&\quad\text{if}\ n=2m, \end{cases} $$ where $\mathrm{sgn}(x)$ is the sign function, and $E_0,E_1,E_2,\ldots$ are the Euler (zigzag) numbers. In the course of linking the evaluation of these permanents to the aforementioned combinatorial sequences, the classical permutation statistic -- the excedance number, together with several kinds of its variants, plays a central role. Our approach features recurrence relations, bijections, as well as certain elementary operations on matrices that preserve their permanents. Moreover, our proof of the second permanent identity leads to a proof of Bala's conjectural continued fraction formula, and an unexpected permutation interpretation for the $γ$-coefficients of the $2$-Eulerian polynomials.

Cycles of even-odd drop permutations and continued fractions of Genocchi numbers
Published • View Publication • BIB
Recently, Lazar and Wachs (arXiv:1910.07651) showed that the (median) Genocchi numbers play a fundamental role in the study of the homogenized Linial arrangement and obtained two new permutation models (called D-permutations and E-permutations) for (median) Genocchi numbers. They further conjecture that the distributions of cycle numbers over the two models are equal. In a follow-up, Eu et al. (arXiv:2103.09130) further proved the gamma-positivity of the descent polynomials of even-odd descent permutations, which are in bijection with E-permutations by Foata's fundamental transformation. This paper merges the above two papers by considering a general moment sequence which encompasses the number of cycles and number of drops of E-permutations. Using the combinatorial theory of continued fraction, the moment connection enables us to confirm Lazar-Wachs' conjecture and obtain a natural $(p,q)$-analogue of Eu et al's descent polynomials. Furthermore, we show that the $γ$-coefficients of our $(p,q)$-analogue of descent polynomials have the same factorization flavor as the $γ$-coeffcients of Brändén's $(p,q)$-Eulerian polynomials.

Eulerian polynomials, Stirling permutations and increasing trees
We study two generalizations of the gamma-expansion of Eulerian polynomials from the viewpoint of the decompositions of statistics. We first present an expansion formula of the trivariate Eulerian polynomials, which are the enumerators for the joint distribution of descents, big ascents and successions of permutations. And then, inspired by the work of Chen and Fu on the trivariate second-order Eulerian polynomials, we show the e-positivity of the multivariate k-th order Eulerian polynomials, which are the enumerators for the joint distribution of ascents, descents and j-plateaux of k-Stirling permutations. We provide combinatorial interpretations for the coefficients of these two expansions in terms of increasing trees.
Immanant Positivity for Catalan-Stieltjes Matrices
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we give some sufficient conditions for the nonnegativity of immanants of square submatrices of Catalan-Stieltjes matrices and their corresponding Hankel matrices. To obtain these sufficient conditions, we construct new planar networks with a recursive nature for Catalan-Stieltjes matrices. As applications, we provide a unified way to produce inequalities for many combinatorial polynomials, such as the Eulerian polynomials, Schröder polynomials and Narayana polynomials.

A Context-free Grammar for the $e$-Positivity of the Trivariate Second-order Eulerian Polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
Ma-Ma-Yeh made a beautiful observation that a transformation of the grammar of Dumont instantly leads to the $γ$-positivity of the Eulerian polynomials. We notice that the transformed grammar bears a striking resemblance to the grammar for 0-1-2 increasing trees also due to Dumont. The appearance of the factor of two fits perfectly in a grammatical labeling of 0-1-2 increasing plane trees. Furthermore, the grammatical calculus is instrumental to the computation of the generating functions. This approach can be adapted to study the $e$-positivity of the trivariate second-order Eulerian polynomials first introduced by Dumont in the contexts of ternary trees and Stirling permutations, and independently defined by Janson, in connection with the joint distribution of the numbers of ascents, descents and plateaux over Stirling permutations.

Quasi-Stirling Polynomials on Multisets
Published • View Publication • BIB
A permutation $π$ of a multiset is said to be a {\em quasi-Stirling} permutation if there does not exist four indices $i<j<k<\ell$ such that $π_i=π_k$ and $π_j=π_{\ell}$. For a multiset $\mathcal{M}$, denote by $\overline{\mathcal{Q}}_{\mathcal{M}}$ the set of quasi-Stirling permutations of $\mathcal{M}$. The {\em qusi-Stirling polynomial} on the multiset $\mathcal{M}$ is defined by $ \overline{Q}_{\mathcal{M}}(t)=\sum_{π\in \overline{\mathcal{Q}}_{\mathcal{M}}}t^{des(π)}$, where $des(π)$ denotes the number of descents of $π$. By employing generating function arguments, Elizalde derived an elegant identity involving quasi-Stirling polynomials on the multiset $\{1^2, 2^2, \ldots, n^2\}$, in analogy to the identity on Stirling polynomials. In this paper, we derive an identity involving quasi-Stirling polynomials $\overline{Q}_{\mathcal{M}}(t)$ for any multiset $\mathcal{M}$, which is a generalization of the identity on Eulerian polynomial and Elizalde's identity on quasi-Stirling polynomials on the multiset $\{1^2, 2^2, \ldots, n^2\}$. We provide a combinatorial proof the identity in terms of certain ordered labeled trees. Specializing $\mathcal{M}=\{1^2, 2^2, \ldots, n^2\}$ implies a combinatorial proof of Elizalde's identity in answer to the problem posed by Elizalde. As an application, our identity enables us to show that the quasi-Stirling polynomial $\overline{Q}_{\mathcal{M}}(t)$ has only real roots and the coefficients of $\overline{Q}_{\mathcal{M}}(t)$ are unimodal and log-concave for any multiset $\mathcal{M}$, in analogy to Brenti's result for Stirling polynomials on multisets.

The asymptotic number of lattice zonotopes in a hypercube
We provide a sharp estimate for the asymptotic number of lattice zonotopes, inscribed in $[0,n ]^d$ when $n$ tends to infinity. Our estimate refines the logarithmic equivalent established by Barany, Bureaux, and Lund when the sum of the generators of the zonotope is prescribed. As we shall see, the exponential part of our estimate is composed of a polynomial of degree $d$ in $n^{1/(d+1)}$, and involves Riemann's zeta function and its non-trivial zeros. %Our analysis is based on a mapping between sums of coprime numbers and Eulerian polynomials. We also analyze some combinatorial properties of lattice zonotopes. In particular, we provide the first moment of the polyhedral graph asymptotic diameter when $n$ goes to infinity.

Alternating Eulerian polynomials and left peak polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we present grammatical interpretations of the alternating Eulerian polynomials of types A and B. As applications, we derive several properties of the type B alternating Eulerian polynomials, including combinatorial expansions, recurrence relations and generating functions. We establish an interesting connection between alternating Eulerian polynomials of type B and left peak polynomials of permutations in the symmetric group, which implies that the type B alternating Eulerian polynomials have gamma-vectors alternate in sign.

Peaks are preserved under run-sorting
Published in ECA 2:1 (2022) Article S2R2, http://ecajournal.haifa.ac.il/Volume2022/ECA2022_S2A2.pdf • View Publication • BIB
We study a sorting procedure (run-sorting) on permutations, where runs are rearranged in lexicographic order. We describe a rather surprising bijection on permutations on length $n$, with the property that it sends the set of peak-values to the set of peak-values after run-sorting. We also prove that the expected number of descents in a permutation $σ\in S_{n}$ after run-sorting is equal to $(n-2)/3$. Moreover, we provide a closed form of the exponential generating function introduced by Nabawanda, Rakotondrajao and Bamunoba in 2020, for the number of run-sorted permutations of $[n]$, ($RSP(n)$) having $k$ runs, which gives a new interpretation to the sequence A124324 in the Online Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences. We show that the descent generating polynomials, $A_{n}(t)$ for $RSP(n)$ are real rooted, and satisfy an interlacing property similar to that satisfied by the Eulerian polynomials. Finally, we study run-sorted binary words and compute the expected number of descents after run-sorting a binary word of length $n$.

Equidistributions around special kinds of descents and excedances
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider a sequence of four variable polynomials by refining Stieltjes' continued fraction for Eulerian polynomials. Using combinatorial theory of Jacobi-type continued fractions and bijections we derive various combinatorial interpretations in terms of permutation statistics for these polynomials, which include special kinds of descents and excedances in a recent paper of Baril and Kirgizov. As a by-product, we derive several equidistribution results for permutation statistics, which enables us to confirm and strengthen a recent conjecture of Vajnovszki and also to obtain several compagnion permutation statistics for two bistatistics in a conjecture of Baril and Kirgizov.

Flag Hilbert-Poincaré series of hyperplane arrangements and their Igusa zeta functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce and study a class of multivariate rational functions associated with hyperplane arrangements, called flag Hilbert-Poincaré series. These series are intimately connected with Igusa local zeta functions of products of linear polynomials, and their motivic and topological relatives. Our main results include a self-reciprocity result for central arrangements defined over fields of characteristic zero. We also prove combinatorial formulae for a specialization of the flag Hilbert-Poincaré series for irreducible Coxeter arrangements of types $\mathsf{A}$, $\mathsf{B}$, and $\mathsf{D}$ in terms of total partitions of the respective types. We show that a different specialization of the flag Hilbert-Poincaré series, which we call the coarse flag Hilbert-Poincaré series, exhibits intriguing nonnegativity features and - in the case of Coxeter arrangements - connections with Eulerian polynomials. For numerous classes and examples of hyperplane arrangements, we determine their (coarse) flag Hilbert-Poincaré series. Some computations were aided by a SageMath package we developed.

The Eulerian transformation
Published • View Publication • BIB
Eulerian polynomials are fundamental in combinatorics and algebra. In this paper we study the linear transformation $\mathcal{A} : \mathbb{R}[t] \to \mathbb{R}[t]$ defined by $\mathcal{A}(t^n) = A_n(t)$, where $A_n(t)$ denotes the $n$-th Eulerian polynomial. We give combinatorial, topological and Ehrhart theoretic interpretations of the operator $\mathcal{A}$, and investigate questions of unimodality and real-rootedness. In particular, we disprove a conjecture by Brenti (1989) concerning the preservation of real zeros, and generalize and strengthen recent results of Haglund and Zhang (2019) on binomial Eulerian polynomials.

Excedance-type polynomials and gamma-positivity
Published • View Publication • BIB
The object of this paper is to give a systematic treatment of excedance-type polynomials. We first give a sufficient condition for a sequence of polynomials to have alternatingly increasing property, and then we present a systematic study of the joint distribution of excedances, fixed points and cycles of permutations and derangements, signed or not, colored or not. Let $p\in [0,1]$ and $q\in [0,1]$ be two given real numbers. We prove that the cyc q-Eulerian polynomials of permutations are bi-gamma-positive, and the fix and cyc (p,q)-Eulerian polynomials of permutations are alternatingly increasing, and so they are unimodal with modes in the middle, where fix and cyc are the fixed point and cycle statistics. When p=1 and q=1/2, we find a combinatorial interpretation of the bi-gamma-coefficients of the (p,q)-Eulerian polynomials. We then study excedance and flag excedance statistics of signed permutations and colored permutations. In particular, we establish the relationships between the (p,q)-Eulerian polynomials and some multivariate Eulerian polynomials. Our results unify and generalize a variety of recent results.

Hilbert series of typical representations for Lie superalgebras
Let g be a basic classical Lie superalgebra over C. In the case of a typical weight whose every nonnegative integer multiple is also typical, we compute a closed form for the Hilbert series whose coefficients encode the dimensions of finite-dimensional irreducible typical g-representations. We give a formula for this Hilbert series in terms of elementary symmetric polynomials and Eulerian polynomials. Additionally, we show a simple closed form in terms of differential operators.

Face numbers of barycentric subdivisions of cubical complexes
Published • View Publication • BIB
The $h$-polynomial of the barycentric subdivision of any $n$-dimensional cubical complex with nonnegative cubical $h$-vector is shown to have only real roots and to be interlaced by the Eulerian polynomial of type $B_n$. This result applies to barycentric subdivisions of shellable cubical complexes and, in particular, to barycentric subdivisions of cubical convex polytopes and answers affirmatively a question of Brenti, Mohammadi and Welker.

Signed Euler-Mahonian identities
Published • View Publication • BIB
A relationship between signed Eulerian polynomials and the classical Eulerian polynomials on $\mathfrak{S}_n$ was given by Désarménien and Foata in 1992, and a refined version, called signed Euler-Mahonian identity, together with a bijective proof were proposed by Wachs in the same year. By generalizing this bijection, in this paper we extend the above results to the Coxeter groups of types $B_n$, $D_n$, and the complex reflection group $G(r,1,n)$, where the `sign' is taken to be any one-dimensional character. Some obtained identities can be further restricted on some particular set of permutations. We also derive some new interesting sign-balance polynomials for types $B_n$ and $D_n$.
