Billey's formula in combinatorics, geometry, and topology
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this expository paper we describe a powerful combinatorial formula and its implications in geometry, topology, and algebra. This formula first appeared in the appendix of a book by Andersen, Jantzen, and Soergel. Sara Billey discovered it independently five years later, and it played a prominent role in her work to evaluate certain polynomials closely related to Schubert polynomials. Billey's formula relates many pieces of Schubert calculus: the geometry of Schubert varieties, the action of the torus on the flag variety, combinatorial data about permutations, the cohomology of the flag variety and of the Schubert varieties, and the combinatorics of root systems (generalizing inversions of a permutation). Combinatorially, Billey's formula describes an invariant of pairs of elements of a Weyl group. On its face, this formula is a combination of roots built from subwords of a fixed word. As we will see, it has deeper geometric and topological meaning as well: (1) It tells us about the tangent spaces at each permutation flag in each Schubert variety. (2) It tells us about singular points in Schubert varieties. (3) It tells us about the values of Kostant polynomials. Billey's formula also reflects an aspect of GKM theory, which is a way of describing the torus-equivariant cohomology of a variety just from information about the torus-fixed points in the variety. This paper will also describe some applications of Billey's formula, including concrete combinatorial descriptions of Billey's formula in special cases, and ways to bootstrap Billey's formula to describe the equivariant cohomology of subvarieties of the flag variety to which GKM theory does not apply.

Whittaker functions, geometric crystals, and quantum Schubert calculus
Published • View Publication • BIB
This mostly expository article explores recent developments in the relations between the three objects in the title from an algebro-combinatorial perspective. We prove a formula for Whittaker functions of a real semisimple group as an integral over a geometric crystal in the sense of Berenstein-Kazhdan. We explain the connections of this formula to the program of mirror symmetry of flag varieties developed by Givental and Rietsch; in particular, the integral formula proves the equivariant version of Rietsch's mirror symmetry conjecture. We also explain the idea that Whittaker functions should be thought of as geometric analogues of irreducible characters of finite-dimensional representations.
The Robinson-Schensted Correspondence and $A_2$-web Bases
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study natural bases for two constructions of the irreducible representation of the symmetric group corresponding to $[n,n,n]$: the {\em reduced web} basis associated to Kuperberg's combinatorial description of the spider category; and the {\em left cell basis} for the left cell construction of Kazhdan and Lusztig. In the case of $[n,n]$, the spider category is the Temperley-Lieb category; reduced webs correspond to planar matchings, which are equivalent to left cell bases. This paper compares the images of these bases under classical maps: the {\em Robinson-Schensted algorithm} between permutations and Young tableaux and {\em Khovanov-Kuperberg's bijection} between Young tableaux and reduced webs. One main result uses Vogan's generalized $τ$-invariant to uncover a close structural relationship between the web basis and the left cell basis. Intuitively, generalized $τ$-invariants refine the data of the inversion set of a permutation. We define generalized $τ$-invariants intrinsically for Kazhdan-Lusztig left cell basis elements and for webs. We then show that the generalized $τ$-invariant is preserved by these classical maps. Thus, our result allows one to interpret Khovanov-Kuperberg's bijection as an analogue of the Robinson-Schensted correspondence. Despite all of this, our second main result proves that the reduced web and left cell bases are inequivalent; that is, these bijections are not $S_{3n}$-equivariant maps.

Generalized splines on arbitrary graphs
Published in Pacific J. Math. 281 (2016) 333-364 • View Publication • BIB
Let G be a graph whose edges are labeled by ideals of a commutative ring. We introduce a generalized spline, which is a vertex-labeling of G by elements of the ring so that the difference between the labels of any two adjacent vertices lies in the corresponding edge ideal. Generalized splines arise naturally in combinatorics (em algebraic splines of Billera and others) and in algebraic topology (certain equivariant cohomology rings, described by Goresky-Kottwitz-MacPherson and others). The central question of this manuscript asks when an arbitrary edge-labeled graph has nontrivial generalized splines. The answer is `always', and we prove the stronger result that generalized splines contain a free submodule whose rank is the number of vertices in G. We describe all generalized splines when G is a tree, and give several ways to describe the ring of generalized splines as an intersection of generalized splines for simpler subgraphs of G. We also present a new tool which we call the GKM matrix, an analogue of the incidence matrix of a graph, and end with open questions.

Characteristic classes of affine varieties and Plucker formulas for affine morphisms
Published in Journal of the EMS, 20 (2018) 15-59 • View Publication • BIB
An enumerative problem on a variety $V$ is usually solved by reduction to intersection theory in the cohomology of a compactification of $V$. However, if the problem is invariant under a "nice" group action on $V$ (so that $V$ is spherical), then many authors suggested a better home for intersection theory: the direct limit of the cohomology rings of all equivariant compactifications of $V$. We call this limit the affine cohomology of $V$ and construct affine characteristic classes of subvarieties of a complex torus, taking values in the affine cohomology of the torus. This allows us to make the first steps in computing affine Thom polynomials. Classical Thom polynomials count how many fibers of a generic proper map of a smooth variety have a prescribed collection of singularities, and our affine version addresses the same question for generic polynomial maps of affine algebraic varieites. This notion is also motivated by developing an intersection-theoretic approach to tropical correspondence theorems: they can be reduced to the computation of affine Thom polynomials, because the fundamental class of a variety in the affine cohomology is encoded by the tropical fan of this variety. The first concrete answer that we obtain is the affine version of what were, historically speaking, the first three Thom poylnomials -- the Plucker formulas for the degree and the number of cusps and nodes of a projectively dual curve. This, in particular, classifies toric varieties, whose projective dual is a hypersurface, computes the tropical fan of the variety of double tangent hyperplanes to a toric variety, and describes the Newton polytope of the hypersurface of non-Morse polynomials of a given degree. We also make a conjecture on the general form of affine Thom polynomials -- a key ingredient is the $n$-ary fan, generalizing the secondary polytope.

An equivariant discrete model for complexified arrangement complements
Published • View Publication • BIB
We define a partial ordering on the set Q = Q(M) of pairs of topes of an oriented matroid M, and show the geometric realization |Q| of the order complex of Q has the same homotopy type as the Salvetti complex of M. For any element e of the ground set, the complex |Qe| associated to the rank-one oriented matroid on {e} has the homotopy type of the circle. There is a natural free simplicial action of Z4 on |Q|, with orbit space isomorphic to the order complex of the poset Q(M,e) associated to the pointed (or affine) oriented matroid (M,e). If M is the oriented matroid of an arrangement A of linear hyperplanes in real space, the Z_4 action corresponds to the diagonal action of C* on the complement M of the complexification of A: |Q| is equivariantly homotopy-equivalent to M under the identification of Z_4 with {+1, i, -1, -i}, and |Q(M, e)| is homotopy-equivalent to the complement of the decone of A relative to the hyperplane corresponding to e. All constructions and arguments are carried out at the level of the underlying posets. If a group G acts on the set of topes of M preserving adjacency, then G acts simplicially on |Q|. We also show that the class of fundamental groups of such complexes is strictly larger than the class of fundamental groups of complements of complex hyperplane arrangements. Specifically, the group of the non-Pappus arrange- ment is not isomorphic to any realizable arrangement group.

Ideals generated by superstandard tableaux
Published • View Publication • BIB
We investigate products J of ideals of "row initial" minors in the polynomial ring K[X] defined by a generic m-by-n matrix. Such ideals are shown to be generated by a certain set of standard bitableaux that we call superstandard. These bitableaux form a Gröbner basis of J, and J has a linear minimal free resolution. These results are used to derive a new generating set for the Grothendieck group of finitely generated (T_m x GL_n(K))-equivariant modules over K[X]. We employ the Knuth--Robinson--Schensted correspondence and a toric deformation of the multi-Rees algebra that parameterizes the ideals J.

Curve neighborhoods of Schubert varieties
Published • View Publication • BIB
A previous result of the authors with Chaput and Perrin states that the union of all rational curves of fixed degree passing through a Schubert variety in a homogeneous space G/P is again a Schubert variety. In this paper we identify this Schubert variety explicitly in terms of the Hecke product of Weyl group elements. We apply our result to give an explicit formula for any two-point Gromov-Witten invariant as well as a new proof of the quantum Chevalley formula and its equivariant generalization. We also recover a formula for the minimal degree of a rational curve between two given points in a cominuscule variety.

Geometric realizations and duality for Dahmen-Micchelli modules and De Concini-Procesi-Vergne modules
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give an algebraic description of several modules and algebras related to the vector partition function, and we prove that they can be realized as the equivariant K-theory of some manifolds that have a nice combinatorial description. We also propose a more natural and general notion of duality between these modules, which corresponds to a Poincaré duality-type correspondence for equivariant K-theory.

Excited Young diagrams, equivariant K-theory, and Schubert varieties
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give combinatorial descriptions of the restrictions to T-fixed points of the classes of structure sheaves of Schubert varieties in the T-equivariant K-theory of Grassmannians and of maximal isotropic Grassmannians of orthogonal and symplectic types. We also give formulas, based on these descriptions, for the Hilbert series and Hilbert polynomials at T-fixed points of the corresponding Schubert varieties. These descriptions and formulas are given in terms of two equivalent combinatorial models: excited Young diagrams and set-valued tableaux. The restriction fomulas are positive, in that for a Schubert variety of codimension d, the formula equals (-1)^d times a sum, with nonnegative coefficients, of monomials in the expressions (e^{-α}-1), as αruns over the positive roots. In types A_n and C_n the restriction formulas had been proved earlier by [Kreiman 05], [Kreiman 06] by a different method. In type A_n, the formula for the Hilbert series had been proved earlier by [Li-Yong 12]. The method of this paper, which relies on a restriction formula of [Graham 02] and [Willems 06], is based on the method used by [Ikeda-Naruse 09] to obtain the analogous formulas in equivariant cohomology. The formulas we give differ from the K-theoretic restriction formulas given by [Ikeda-Naruse 11], which use different versions of excited Young diagrams and set-valued tableaux. We also give Hilbert series and Hilbert polynomial formulas which are valid for Schubert varieties in any cominuscule flag variety, in terms of the 0-Hecke algebra.

K-orbit closures on G/B as universal degeneracy loci for flagged vector bundles splitting as direct sums
Published • View Publication • BIB
We use equivariant localization and divided difference operators to determine formulas for the torus-equivariant fundamental cohomology classes of $K$-orbit closures on the flag variety $G/B$ for various symmetric pairs $(G,K)$. In type $A$, we realize the closures of $K=GL(p,\C) \times GL(q,\C)$-orbits on $GL(p+q,\C)/B$ as universal degeneracy loci for a vector bundle over a variety which is equipped with a single flag of subbundles and which splits as a direct sum of subbundles of ranks $p$ and $q$. The precise description of such a degeneracy locus relies upon knowing a set-theoretic description of $K$-orbit closures, which we provide via a detailed combinatorial analysis of the poset of "$(p,q)$-clans," which parametrize the orbit closures. We describe precisely how our formulas for the equivariant classes of $K$-orbit closures can be interpreted as formulas for the classes of such degeneracy loci in the Chern classes of the bundles involved. In the cases outside of type $A$, we suggest that the orbit closures should parametrize degeneracy loci involving a vector bundle equipped with a non-degenerate symmetric or skew-symmetric bilinear form, a single flag of subbundles which are isotropic or Lagrangian with respect to the form, and a splitting as a direct sum of subbundles with each summand satisfying some property (depending on $K$) with respect to the form. The precise description of such a degeneracy locus is conjectured for all cases in types $B$ and $C$.

Generalized Schubert Calculus

In this paper we study the T-equivariant generalized cohomology of flag varieties using two models, the Borel model and the moment graph model. We study the differences between the Schubert classes and the Bott-Samelson classes. After setup of the general framework we compute, for classes of Schubert varieties of complex dimension <4 in rank 2 (including A_2, B_2, G_2 and A_1^{(1)}), moment graph representatives, Pieri-Chevalley formulas and products of Schubert classes. These computations generalize the computations in equivariant K-theory for rank 2 cases which are given in Griffeth-Ram arXiv:math/0405333.

Eigenvalues of Hermitian matrices and equivariant cohomology of Grassmannians
Published in Compositio Math. vol 149 (2013), pp 1569-1582 • View Publication • BIB
The saturation theorem of [Knutson-Tao '99] concerns the nonvanishing of Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. In combination with work of [Klyachko '98], it implies [Horn '62]'s conjecture about eigenvalues of sums of Hermitian matrices. This eigenvalue problem has a generalization [Friedland '00] to majorized sums of Hermitian matrices. We further illustrate the common features between these two eigenvalue problems and their connection to Schubert calculus of Grassmannians. Our main result gives a Schubert calculus interpretation of Friedland's problem, via equivariant cohomology of Grassmannians. In particular, we prove a saturation theorem for this setting. Our arguments employ the aformentioned work together with [Thomas-Yong '12].

Toric Topology
Published in Mathematical Surveys and Monographs, 204, American Mathematical Society, Providence, RI, 2015 • View Publication • BIB
Toric topology emerged in the end of the 1990s on the borders of equivariant topology, algebraic and symplectic geometry, combinatorics and commutative algebra. It has quickly grown up into a very active area with many interdisciplinary links and applications, and continues to attract experts from different fields. The key players in toric topology are moment-angle manifolds, a family of manifolds with torus actions defined in combinatorial terms. Their construction links to combinatorial geometry and algebraic geometry of toric varieties via the related notion of a quasitoric manifold. Discovery of remarkable geometric structures on moment-angle manifolds led to seminal connections with the classical and modern areas of symplectic, Lagrangian and non-Kaehler complex geometry. A related categorical construction of moment-angle complexes and their generalisations, polyhedral products, provides a universal framework for many fundamental constructions of homotopical topology. The study of polyhedral products is now evolving into a separate area of homotopy theory, with strong links to other areas of toric topology. A new perspective on torus action has also contributed to the development of classical areas of algebraic topology, such as complex cobordism. The book contains lots of open problems and is addressed to experts interested in new ideas linking all the subjects involved, as well as to graduate students and young researchers ready to enter into a beautiful new area.

Γ-species and the enumeration of k-trees
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 19(4) (2012), #P45 • View Publication • BIB
We study the class of graphs known as k-trees through the lens of Joyal's theory of combinatorial species (and an equivariant extension known as '$Γ$-species' which incorporates data about 'structural' group actions). This culminates in a system of recursive functional equations giving the generating function for unlabeled k-trees which allows for fast, efficient computation of their numbers. Enumerations up to k = 10 and n = 30 (for a k-tree with (n+k-1) vertices) are included in tables, and Sage code for the general computation is included in an appendix.

The graph cohomology ring of the GKM graph of a flag manifold of type $G_2$
Suppose a compact torus $T$ acts on a closed smooth manifold $M$. Under certain conditions, Guillemin and Zara associate to $(M, T)$ a labeled graph $\mG_M$ where the labels lie in $H^2(BT)$. They also define the subring $H_T^*(\mG_M)$ of $\bigoplus_{v\in V(\mG_M)}H^*(BT)$, where $V(\mG_M)$ is the set of vertices of $\mG_M$ and we call $H_T^*(\mG_M)$ the "graph cohomology" ring of $\mG_M$. It is known that the equivariant cohomology ring of $M$ can be described by using combinatorial data of the labeled graph. The main result of this paper is to determine the ring structure of equivariant cohomology ring of a flag manifold of type $G_2$ directly, using combinatorial techniques on the graph $\mG_M$. This gives a new computation of the equivariant cohomology ring of a flag manifold of type $G_2$.

Equivariant Schubert calculus and jeu de taquin
Published in Ann. Inst. Fourier (Grenoble) 68 (2018), no. 1, 275-318 • View Publication • BIB
We introduce edge labeled Young tableaux. Our main results provide a corresponding analogue of [Schützenberger '77]'s theory of jeu de taquin. These are applied to the equivariant Schubert calculus of Grassmannians. Reinterpreting, we present new (semi)standard tableaux to study factorial Schur polynomials, after [Biedenharn-Louck '89], [Macdonald '92] and [Goulden-Greene '94] and others. Consequently, we obtain new combinatorial rules for the Schubert structure coefficients, complementing work of [Molev-Sagan '99], [Knutson-Tao '03], [Molev '08] and [Kreiman '09]. We also describe a conjectural generalization of one of our rules to the equivariant K-theory of Grassmannians, extending work of [Thomas-Yong '07]. This conjecture concretely realizes the "positivity" known to exist by [Anderson-Griffeth-Miller '08]. It provides an alternative to the conjectural rule of Knutson-Vakil reported in [Coskun-Vakil '06].
Equivariant Topology of Configuration Spaces

We study the Fadell-Husseini index of the configuration space F(R^d,n) with respect to different subgroups of the symmetric group S_n. For p prime and d>0, we completely determine Index_{Z/p}(F(R^d,p);F_p) and partially describe Index{(Z/p)^k}(F(R^d,p^k);F_p). In this process we obtain results of independent interest, including: (1) an extended equivariant Goresky-MacPherson formula, (2) a complete description of the top homology of the partition lattice Pi_p as an F_p[Z_p]-module, and (3) a generalized Dold theorem for elementary abelian groups. The results on the Fadell-Husseini index yield a new proof of the Nandakumar & Ramana Rao conjecture for a prime. For n=p^k a prime power, we compute the Lusternik-Schnirelmann category cat(F(R^d,n)/S_n)=(d-1)(n-1). Moreover, we extend coincidence results related to the Borsuk-Ulam theorem, as obtained by Cohen & Connett, Cohen & Lusk, and Karasev & Volovikov.

K-theoretic Gromov-Witten invariants of lines in homogeneous spaces
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let X=G/P be a homogeneous space and e_k be the class of a simple coroot in H_2(X). A theorem of Strickland shows that for almost all X, the variety of pointed lines of degree e_k, denoted Z_k(X), is again a homogeneous space. For these X we show that the 3-point, genus 0, equivariant K-theoretic Gromov-Witten invariants of lines of degree e_k are equal to quantities obtained in the (ordinary) equivariant K-theory of Z_k(X). We apply this to compute the structure constants N_{u,v}^{w, e_k} for degree e_k from the multiplication of two Schubert classes in the equivariant quantum K-theory ring of X. Using geometry of spaces of lines through Schubert or Richardson varieties we prove vanishing and positivity properties of N_{u,v}^{w,e_k}. This generalizes many results about K-theory and quantum cohomology of X, and also gives new identities among the structure constants in equivariant K-theory of X.

Generalized 1-skeleta and a lifting result
Published in Discrete Comput. Geom. 50, No. 4, 940-976 (2013) • View Publication • BIB
In their paper "1-skeleta, Betti numbers, and equivariant cohomology" Guillemin and Zara described some beautiful constructions enabling them to use Morse theory on a certain class 1-skeleta including 1-skeleta of simple polytopes. In this paper we extend some of the notions and constructions from that paper to a larger class of 1-skeleta that includes 1-skeleta of projected simple polytopes. As an application of these ideas we prove a lifting result for 1-skeleta, which yields a characterization of 1-skeleta coming from projected simple polytopes.
