Dinv, Area, and Bounce for $\vec{k}$-Dyck paths
The well-known $q,t$-Catalan sequence has two combinatorial interpretations as weighted sums of ordinary Dyck paths: one is Haglund's area-bounce formula, and the other is Haiman's dinv-area formula. The zeta map was constructed to connect these two formulas: it is a bijection from ordinary Dyck paths to themselves, and it takes dinv to area, and area to bounce. Such a result was extended for $k$-Dyck paths by Loehr. The zeta map was extended by Armstrong-Loehr-Warrington for a very general class of paths.
In this paper, We extend the dinv-area-bounce result for $\vec{k}$-Dyck paths by: i) giving a geometric construction for the bounce statistic of a $\vec{k}$-Dyck path, which includes the $k$-Dyck paths and ordinary Dyck paths as special cases; ii) giving a geometric interpretation of the dinv statistic of a $\vec{k}$-Dyck path. Our bounce construction is inspired by Loehr's construction and Xin-Zhang's linear algorithm for inverting the sweep map on $\vec{k}$-Dyck paths. Our dinv interpretation is inspired by Garsia-Xin's visual proof of dinv-to-area result on rational Dyck paths.
The p-Airy distribution
In this manuscript we consider the set of Dyck paths equipped with the uniform measure, and we study the statistical properties of a deformation of the observable "area below the Dyck path" as the size $N$ of the path goes to infinity. The deformation under analysis is apparently new: while usually the area is constructed as the sum of the heights of the steps of the Dyck path, here we regard it as the sum of the lengths of the connected horizontal slices under the path, and we deform it by applying to the lengths of the slices a positive regular function $ω(\ell)$ such that $ω(\ell) \sim \ell^p$ for large argument. This shift of paradigm is motivated by applications to the Euclidean Random Assignment Problem in Random Combinatorial Optimization, and to Tree Hook Formulas in Algebraic Combinatorics.
For $p \in \mathbb{R}^+ \smallsetminus \left\{ \frac{1}{2}\right\}$, we characterize the statistical properties of the deformed area as a function of the deformation function $ω(\ell)$ by computing its integer moments, finding a generalization of a well-known recursion for the moments of the area-Airy distribution, due to Takács. Most of the properties of the distribution of the deformed area are \emph{universal}, meaning that they depend on the deformation parameter $p$, but not on the microscopic details of the function $ω(\ell)$. We call \emph{$p$-Airy distribution} this family of universal distributions.

We study the distribution and the popularity of some patterns in $k$-ary faro words, i.e. words over the alphabet $\{1, 2, \ldots, k\}$ obtained by interlacing the letters of two nondecreasing words of lengths differing by at most one. We present a bijection between these words and dispersed Dyck paths (i.e. Motzkin paths with all level steps on the $x$-axis) with a given number of peaks. We show how the bijection maps statistics of consecutive patterns of faro words into linear combinations of other pattern statistics on paths. Then, we deduce enumerative results by providing multivariate generating functions for the distribution and the popularity of patterns of length at most three. Finally, we consider some interesting subclasses of faro words that are permutations, involutions, derangements, or subexcedent words.

In this paper we study maximal chains in certain lattices constructed from powers of chains by iterated lax colimits in the $2$-category of posets. Such a study is motivated by the fact that in lower dimensions, we get some familiar combinatorial objects such as Dyck paths and Kreweras walks.
4D Dyck triangle and its projections
The classic Dyck triangle, the Catalan triangle, and the Catalan convolution matrix are plane projections of the multidimensional Dyck triangle. In the Dyck path, each node is uniquely determined by two of four interrelated parameters: (i) the position of the current parenthesis, (ii) the current unbalance of the parentheses, (iii) the number of viewed left parentheses, and (iv) the same for right parentheses. The last two parameters can be redefined, respectively, as the index of the current Catalan number and the index of the summand in the decomposition of the Catalan number into the sum of squares (Dyck squares). For the 4D Dyck triangle, we consider six 2D projections (some of them are not yet in demand) and four 3D projections.
Enumerating Restricted Dyck Paths with Context-Free Grammars
The number of Dyck paths of semilength $n$ is famously $C_n$, the $n$th Catalan number. This fact follows after noticing that every Dyck path can be uniquely parsed according to a context-free grammar. In a recent paper, Zeilberger showed that many restricted sets of Dyck paths satisfy different, more complicated grammars, and from this derived various generating function identities. We take this further, highlighting some combinatorial results about Dyck paths obtained via grammatical proof and generalizing some of Zeilberger's grammars to infinite families.

We show that the distribution of the number of peaks at height $i$ modulo $k$ in $k$-Dyck paths of a given length is independent of $i\in[0,k-1]$ and is the reversal of the distribution of the total number of peaks. Moreover, these statistics, together with the number of double descents, are jointly equidistributed with any of their permutations. We also generalize this result to generalized Motzkin paths and generalized ballot paths.
Symmetric peaks and symmetric valleys in Dyck paths

The notion of symmetric and asymmetric peaks in Dyck paths was introduced by Flórez and Rodríguez, who counted the total number of such peaks over all Dyck paths of a given length. In this paper we generalize their results by giving multivariate generating functions that keep track of the number of symmetric peaks and the number of asymmetric peaks, as well as the widths of these peaks. We recover a formula of Denise and Simion as a special case of our results.
We also consider the analogous but more intricate notion of symmetric valleys. We find a continued fraction expression for the generating function of Dyck paths with respect to the number of symmetric valleys and the sum of their widths, which provides an unexpected connection between symmetric valleys and statistics on ordered rooted trees. Finally, we enumerate Dyck paths whose peak or valley heights satisfy certain monotonicity and unimodality conditions, using a common framework to recover some known results, and relating our questions to the enumeration of certain classes of column-convex polyominoes.

The number of down-steps between pairs of up-steps in $k_t$-Dyck paths, a generalization of Dyck paths consisting of steps $\{(1, k), (1, -1)\}$ such that the path stays (weakly) above the line $y=-t$, is studied. Results are proved bijectively and by means of generating functions, and lead to several interesting identities as well as links to other combinatorial structures. In particular, there is a connection between $k_t$-Dyck paths and perforation patterns for punctured convolutional codes (binary matrices) used in coding theory. Surprisingly, upon restriction to usual Dyck paths this yields a new combinatorial interpretation of Catalan numbers.
Patterns in Shi tableaux and Dyck paths

Shi tableaux are special binary fillings of certain Young diagrams which arise in the study of Shi hyperplane arrangements related to classical root systems. For type $A$, the set $\mathcal T$ of Shi tableaux naturally coincides with the set of Dyck paths, for which various notions of patterns have been introduced and studied over the years. In this paper we define a notion of pattern occurrence on $\mathcal T$ which, although it can be regarded as a pattern on Dyck paths, it is motivated by the underlying geometric structure of the tableaux. Our main goal in this work is to study the poset of Shi tableaux defined by pattern-containment. More precisely, we determine explicit formulas for upper and lower covers for each $T\in\mathcal T$, we consider pattern avoidance for the smallest non-trivial tableaux (size 2) and generalize these results to certain tableau of larger size. We conclude with open problems and possible future directions.

We present a substantial generalization of the equinumeracy of grand Dyck paths and Dyck-path prefixes, constrained within a band. The number of constrained paths starting at level $i$ and ending in a window of size $2j+2$ is equal to the number starting at level $j$ and ending in a window of size $2i+2$ centered around the same point. A new encoding of lattice paths provides a bijective proof.

Dyck paths where peaks are only allowed on level 1 and on even-indexed levels, were introduced by Retakh and analysed by Zeilberger, with assistance from Ekhad. We add some combinatorial comments to the enumeration, which involves Motzkin numbers, in particular, about the average height of such objects.
Combinatorics of injective words for Temperley-Lieb algebras

This paper studies combinatorial properties of the 'complex of planar injective words', a chain complex of modules over the Temperley-Lieb algebra that arose in our work on homological stability. Despite being a linear rather than a discrete object, our chain complex nevertheless exhibits interesting combinatorial properties. We show that the Euler characteristic of this complex is the n-th Fine number. We obtain an alternating sum formula for the representation given by its top-dimensional homology module and, under further restrictions on the ground ring, we decompose this module in terms of certain standard Young tableaux. This trio of results - inspired by results of Reiner and Webb for the complex of injective words - can be viewed as an interpretation of the n-th Fine number as the 'planar' or 'Dyck path' analogue of the number of derangements of n letters. This interpretation has precursors in the literature, but here emerges naturally from considerations in homological stability. Our final result shows a surprising connection between the boundary maps of our complex and the Jacobsthal numbers.
Automatic Counting of Restricted Dyck Paths via (Numeric and Symbolic) Dynamic Programming
Dyck paths are one of the most important objects in enumerative combinatorics, and there are many papers devoted to counting selected families of Dyck paths. Here we present two approaches for the automatic counting of many such families, using both a "dumb" approach (driven by numeric dynamic programming) that often works in practice, and a "clever" approach, needed for larger problems, driven by "symbolic" dynamic programming. Both approaches are fully automated and implemented in Maple.
Enumeration of Deutsch paths by adding the adding-a-new-slice method and applications
A variation of Dyck paths allows for down-steps of arbitrary length, not just one. This is motivated by ideas due to Emeric Deutsch. We use the adding-a-new-slice technique and the kernel method to compute the number of maximal runs of up-step runs of length 1 and a subclass of Deutsch paths satisfying a condition that was stipulated by R. Stanley for Dyck paths.
Alternating sign matrices and totally symmetric plane partitions
We study the Schur polynomial expansion of a family of symmetric polynomials related to the refined enumeration of alternating sign matrices with respect to their inversion number, complementary inversion number and the position of the unique $1$ in the top row. We prove that the expansion can be expressed as a sum over totally symmetric plane partitions and we are also able to determine the coefficients. This establishes a new connection between alternating sign matrices and a class of plane partitions, thereby complementing the fact that alternating sign matrices are equinumerous with totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions as well as with descending plane partitions. As a by-product we obtain an interesting map from totally symmetric plane partitions to Dyck paths. The proof is based on a new, quite general antisymmetrizer-to-determinant formula.

Associated with the $r$-Shi arrangement and $r$-Catalan arrangement in $\Bbb{R}^n$, we introduce a cubic matrix for each region to establish two bijections in a uniform way. Firstly, the positions of minimal positive entries in column slices of the cubic matrix will give a bijection from regions of the $r$-Shi arrangement to $O$-rooted labeled $r$-trees. Secondly, the numbers of positive entries in column slices of the cubic matrix will give a bijection from regions of the $r$-Catalan arrangement to pairings of permutation and $r$-Dyck path. Moreover, the numbers of positive entries in row slices of the cubic matrix will recover the Pak-Stanley labeling, a celebrated bijection from regions of the $r$-Shi arrangement to $r$-parking functions.

A variation of Dyck paths allows for down-steps of arbitrary length, not just one. This is motivated by ideas published by Emeric Deutsch around the turn of the millenium. We are interested in the subclass of them where the sequence of the levels of valleys is non-decreasing. This was studied around 20 years ago in the classical case.
Generating functions for a lattice path model introduced by Deutsch

The lattice path model suggested by E. Deutsch is derived from ordinary Dyck paths, but with additional down-steps of size -3,-5,-7,... . For such paths, we find the generating functions of them, according to length, ending at level $i$, both, when considering them from left to right and from right to left. The generating functions are intrinsically cubic, and thus (for $i=0$) in bijection to various objects, like even trees, ternary trees, etc.
Markov Chain-based Sampling for Exploring RNA Secondary Structure under the Nearest Neighbor Thermodynamic Model

We study plane trees as a model for RNA secondary structure, assigning energy to each tree based on the Nearest Neighbor Thermodynamic Model, and defining a corresponding Gibbs distribution on the trees. Through a bijection between plane trees and 2-Motzkin paths, we design a Markov chain converging to the Gibbs distribution, and establish fast mixing time results by estimating the spectral gap of the chain. The spectral gap estimate is established through a series of decompositions of the chain and also by building on known mixing time results for other chains on Dyck paths. In addition to the mathematical aspects of the result, the resulting algorithm can be used as a tool for exploring the branching structure of RNA and its dependence on energy model parameters. The pseudocode implementing the Markov chain is provided in an appendix.
