Asymptotics of generalized Galois numbers via affine Kac-Moody algebras
Published in Proceedings of the American Mathematical Society 141 (2013), no. 10, 3313-3326 • View Publication • BIB
Generalized Galois numbers count the number of flags in vector spaces over finite fields. Asymptotically, as the dimension of the vector space becomes large, we give their exponential growth and determine their initial values. The initial values are expressed analytically in terms of theta functions and Euler's generating function for the partition numbers. Our asymptotic enumeration method is based on a Demazure module limit construction for integrable highest weight representations of affine Kac-Moody algebras. For the classical Galois numbers, that count the number of subspaces in vector spaces over finite fields, the theta functions are Jacobi theta functions. We apply our findings to the asymptotic number of q-ary codes, and conclude with some final remarks about possible future research concerning asymptotic enumerations via limit constructions for affine Kac-Moody algebras.

Demazure crystals, Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystals, and the energy function
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, Vol. 19 Issue 2, P4 (2012) • View Publication • BIB
It has previously been shown that, at least for non-exceptional Kac-Moody Lie algebras, there is a close connection between Demazure crystals and tensor products of Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystals. In particular, certain Demazure crystals are isomorphic as classical crystals to tensor products of Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystals via a canonically chosen isomorphism. Here we show that this isomorphism intertwines the natural affine grading on Demazure crystals with a combinatorially defined energy function. As a consequence, we obtain a formula of the Demazure character in terms of the energy function, which has applications to Macdonald polynomials and q-deformed Whittaker functions.
Refinements of the Littlewood-Richardson Rule
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 363:1665--1686 (2011) • View Publication • BIB
In the prequel to this paper, we showed how results of Mason involving a new combinatorial formula for polynomials that are now known as Demazure atoms (characters of quotients of Demazure modules, called standard bases by Lascoux and Schutzenberger) could be used to define a new basis for the ring of quasisymmetric functions we call Quasisymmetric Schur functions (QS functions for short). In this paper we develop the combinatorics of these polynomials futher, by showing that the product of a Schur function and a Demazure atom has a positive expansion in terms of Demazure atoms. As a by-product, using the fact that both a QS function and a Demazure character have explicit expressions as a positive sum of atoms, we obtain the expansion of a product of a Schur function with a QS function (Demazure character) as a positive sum of QS functions (Demazure characters). Our formula for the coefficients in the expansion of a product of a Demazure character and a Schur function into Demazure characters is similar to known results and includes in particular the famous Littlewood-Richardson rule for the expansion of a product of Schur functions in terms of the Schur basis.

Demazure crystals of generalized Verma modules and a flagged RSK correspondence
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence is a $\gl_{\infty}$-crystal isomorphism between two realizations of the crystal graph of a generalized Verma module with respect to a maximal parabolic subalgebra of $\gl_{\infty}$. %This extends the previously known result that %the RSK correspondence is an isomorphism of bicrystals or double %crystals. A flagged version of the RSK correspondence is derived in a natural way by computing a Demazure crystal graph of a generalized Verma module. As an application, we discuss a relation between a Demazure crystal and plane partitions with a bounded condition.

Quasisymmetric Schur functions
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory Series A 118 (2011) 463-490 • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a new basis for quasisymmetric functions, which arise from a specialization of nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials to standard bases, also known as Demazure atoms. Our new basis is called the basis of quasisymmetric Schur functions, since the basis elements refine Schur functions in a natural way. We derive expansions for quasisymmetric Schur functions in terms of monomial and fundamental quasisymmetric functions, which give rise to quasisymmetric refinements of Kostka numbers and standard (reverse) tableaux. From here we derive a Pieri rule for quasisymmetric Schur functions that naturally refines the Pieri rule for Schur functions. After surveying combinatorial formulas for Macdonald polynomials, including an expansion of Macdonald polynomials into fundamental quasisymmetric functions, we show how some of our results can be extended to include the $t$ parameter from Hall-Littlewood theory.

An Explicit Construction of Type A Demazure Atoms
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics, Vol. 29, (2009), No. 3, p.295--313 • View Publication • BIB
Demazure characters of type A, which are equivalent to key polynomials, have been decomposed by Lascoux and Schützenberger into standard bases. We prove that the resulting polynomials, which we call Demazure atoms, can be obtained from a certain specialization of nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials. This combinatorial interpretation for Demazure atoms accelerates the computation of the right key associated to a semi-standard Young tableau. Utilizing a related construction, we provide a new combinatorial description for the key polynomials.

Non symmetric Cauchy kernels for the classical Groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give non-symmetric versions of the Cauchy kernel and Littlewood's kernels, corresponding to the types $A_n$, $B_n$, $C_n$ and $D_n$, of the classical groups. We show that these new kernels are diagonal in the basis of two families of key polynomials (one of them being Demazure characters) obtained as images of dominant monomials under isobaric divided differences. We define scalar products such that the two families of key polynomials are adjoint to each other.

Non-Symmetric Hall-Littlewood Polynomials
Using the action of the Yang-Baxter elements of the Hecke algebra on polynomials, we define two bases of polynomials in n variables. The Hall-Littlewood polynomials are a subfamily of one of them. For q=0, these bases specialize into the two families of classical Key polynomials (i.e. Demazure characters for type A). We give a scalar product for which the two bases are adjoint of each other.

Permutation representations on Schubert varieties
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper defines and studies permutation representations on the equivariant cohomology of Schubert varieties, as representations both over C and over C[t_1, t_2,...,t_n]. We show these group actions are the same as an action of simple transpositions studied geometrically by M. Brion, and give topological meaning to the divided difference operators studied by Berstein-Gelfand-Gelfand, Demazure, Kostant-Kumar, and others. We analyze these representations using the combinatorial approach to equivariant cohomology introduced by Goresky-Kottwitz-MacPherson. We find that each permutation representation on equivariant cohomology produces a representation on ordinary cohomology that is trivial, though the equivariant representation is not.

Chains in the Bruhat order
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study a family of polynomials whose values express degrees of Schubert varieties in the generalized complex flag manifold G/B. The polynomials are given by weighted sums over saturated chains in the Bruhat order. We derive several explicit formulas for these polynomials, and investigate their relations with Schubert polynomials, harmonic polynomials, Demazure characters, and generalized Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. In the second half of the paper, we concern with the case of to the classical flag manifold of Lie type A and discuss related combinatorial objects: flagged Schur polynomials, 312-avoiding permutations, generalized Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes, the inverse Schubert-Kostka matrix, parking functions, and binary trees.

Standard Bases for Affine SL(n)-Modules
We give an elementary and easily computable basis for the Demazure modules in the basic representation of the affine Lie algebra sl(n)-hat (and the loop group SL(n)-hat). A novel feature is that we define our basis ``bottom-up'' by raising each extremal weight vector, rather than ``top-down'' by lowering the highest weight vector. Our basis arises naturally from the combinatorics of its indexing set, which consists of certain subsets of the integers first specified by the Kyoto school in terms of crystal operators. We give a new way of defining these special sets in terms of a recursive but very simple algorithm, the roof operator, which is analogous to the left-key construction of Lascoux-Schutzenberger. The roof operator is in a sense orthogonal to the crystal operators.

Complete toric varieties with reductive automorphism group
Published in Math. Z. 252 (2006), 767-786 • View Publication • BIB
We give equivalent and sufficient criteria for the automorphism group of a complete toric variety, respectively a Gorenstein toric Fano variety, to be reductive. In particular we show that the automorphism group of a Gorenstein toric Fano variety is reductive, if the barycenter of the associated reflexive polytope is zero. Furthermore a sharp bound on the dimension of the reductive automorphism group of a complete toric variety is proven by studying the set of Demazure roots.

Affine Weyl groups in K-theory and representation theory
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give an explicit combinatorial Chevalley-type formula for the equivariant K-theory of generalized flag varieties G/P which is a direct generalization of the classical Chevalley formula. Our formula implies a simple combinatorial model for the characters of the irreducible representations of G and, more generally, for the Demazure characters. This model can be viewed as a discrete counterpart of the Littelmann path model, and has several advantages. Our construction is given in terms of a certain R-matrix, that is, a collection of operators satisfying the Yang-Baxter equation. It reduces to combinatorics of decompositions in the affine Weyl group and enumeration of saturated chains in the Bruhat order on the (nonaffine) Weyl group. Our model easily implies several symmetries of the coefficients in the Chevalley-type formula. We also derive a simple formula for multiplying an arbitrary Schubert class by a divisor class, as well as a dual Chevalley-type formula. The paper contains other applications and examples.

Littelmann paths for the basic representation of an affine Lie algebra
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give a new model for the crystal graphs of an affine Lie algebra g^, combining Littelmann's path model with the Kyoto path model. The vertices of the crystal graph are represented by certain infinitely looping paths which we call skeins. We apply this model to the case when the corresponding finite-dimensional algebra g has a minuscule representation (classical type and E_6, E_7). We prove that the basic level-one representation of g^, when considered as a representation of g, is an infinite tensor product of fundamental representations of g. A similar tensor product phenomenon holds for certain Demazure submodules of the basic representation.

LS-Galleries, the path model and MV-cycles
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give an interpretation of the path model of a representation \cite{Lit1} of a complex semisimple algebraic group $G$ in terms of the geometry of its affine Grassmannian. In this setting, the paths are replaced by LS--galleries in the affine Coxeter complex associated to the Weyl group of $G$. To explain the connection with geometry, consider a Demazure--Hansen--Bott--Samelson desingularization $\hatΣ(\lam)$ of the closure of an orbit $G(\bc[[t]]).\lam$ in the affine Grassmannian. The homology of $\hatΣ(\lam)$ has a basis given by Białynicki--Birula cell's, which are indexed by the $T$--fixed points in $\hatΣ(\lam)$. Now the points of $\hatΣ(\lam)$ can be identified with galleries of a fixed type in the affine Tits building associated to $G$, and the $T$--fixed points correspond in this language to combinatorial galleries of a fixed type in the affine Coxeter complex. We determine those galleries such that the associated cell has a non-empty intersection with $G(\bc[[t]]).\lam$ (identified with an open subset of $\hatΣ(\lam)$), and we show that the closures of the strata associated to LS-galleries are exactly the MV--cycles \cite{MV}, which form a basis of the representation $V(\lam)$ for the Langland's dual group $G^\vee$.

Affine type A crystal structure on tensor products of rectangles, Demazure characters, and nilpotent varieties
Published • View Publication • BIB
Answering a question of Kuniba, Misra, Okado, Takagi, and Uchiyama, it is shown that certain Demazure characters of affine type A, coincide with the graded characters of coordinate rings of closures of conjugacy classes of nilpotent matrices. This entails a translation of the affine type A crystal theory into the language of tableaux following Nakayashiki and Yamada, for the case of tensor products of the classical crystals indexed by rectangular partitions. In particular the explicit action of the zero-th crystal raising operator on the above crystals is given, and its direct connection with the generalized cocyclage on Littlewood-Richardson tableaux is explained.
