Separating paths systems of almost linear size

A separating path system for a graph $G$ is a collection $\mathcal{P}$ of paths in $G$ such that for every two edges $e$ and $f$ in $G$, there is a path in $\mathcal{P}$ that contains $e$ but not $f$. We show that every $n$-vertex graph has a separating path system of size $O(n \log^* n)$. This improves upon the previous best upper bound of $O(n \log n)$, and makes progress towards a conjecture of Falgas-Ravry--Kittipassorn--Korándi--Letzter--Narayanan and Balogh--Csaba--Martin--Pluhár, according to which an $O(n)$ bound should hold.
An oriented discrepancy version of Dirac's theorem

The study of graph discrepancy problems, initiated by Erdős in the 1960s, has received renewed attention in recent years. In general, given a $2$-edge-coloured graph $G$, one is interested in embedding a copy of a graph $H$ in $G$ with large discrepancy (i.e. the copy of $H$ contains significantly more than half of its edges in one colour). Motivated by this line of research, Gishboliner, Krivelevich and Michaeli considered an oriented version of graph discrepancy for Hamilton cycles. In particular, they conjectured the following generalization of Dirac's theorem: if $G$ is an oriented graph on $n\geq3$ vertices with $δ(G)\geq n/2$, then $G$ contains a Hamilton cycle with at least $δ(G)$ edges pointing forward. In this paper, we present a full resolution to this conjecture.
$k$-Distance Magic Labeling and Long Brush Graphs
We define a labeling $f:$ $V(G)$ $\rightarrow$ $\{1, 2, \ldots, n\}$ on a graph $G$ of order $n \geq 3$ as a \emph{$k$-distance magic} ($k$-DM) if $\sum_{w\in \partial N_k(u)}{ f(w)}$ is a constant and independent of $u\in V(G)$ where $\partial N_k(u)$ = $\{v\in V(G): d(u, v) = k\}$, $k\in\mathbb{N}$. Graph $G$ is called a \emph{$k$-DM} if it has a $k$-DM labeling(L). Long Brush is a graph $G$ with $V(G)$ = $\{u_1, u_2, . . . , u_n,$ $v_1, v_2, . . . , v_{m}\}$, a path $P_n$ = $u_1$ $u_2$ . . . $u_n$ and $E(G)$ = $E(P_n)$ $\cup$ $\{u_1v_i:$ $i$ = 1 to $m\}$ $\cup$ $E(<v_1, v_2, . . . , v_{m}>)$, $m+n \geq 3$ and $m,n\in\mathbb{N}$. We denoted this graph by $LP_{n, m}$. In this paper, using partition techniques, we obtain families of $k$-DM graphs and prove that $(i)$ For $k,n \geq 3$, $m \geq 2$ and $k,m,n\in\mathbb{N}$, $LP_{n,m}$ is $k$-DM if and only if $m(m-1) \leq 2n$ and $k$ = $n$; (ii) For every $k\in\mathbb{N}_0$ and a given $m \geq 2$, $LP_{\frac{m(m-1)}{2}+k, m}$ is a $(\frac{m(m-1)}{2}+k)$-DM graph; (iii) For $m \geq 3$, $LP_{1,m}$ = $K_1(u_1)+(K_{m_1} \cup K_{m_2} \cup ... \cup K_{m_x})$, $x \geq 2$, $1 \leq m_1 \leq m_2 \leq ... \leq m_x$, $m_1+m_2+...+m_x$ = $m$, $m_1+m_2 \geq 3$ and $m_1,m_2,...,m_x,x\in\mathbb{N}$, $LP_{1,m}$ is 2-DM if and only if $u_1$ is assigned with a suitable $j$ and $J_{m+1}\setminus \{j\}$ is partitioned into $x$ constant sum partites of orders $m_1,m_2,...,m_x$, $1 \leq j \leq m+1$; (iv) For $m \geq 2$ if $LP_{2,m}$ contains two pendant vertices, then $LP_{2,m}$ is not a $2$-DM graph; (v) For $m \geq 2$ and $n \geq 3$, if $LP_{n,m}$ contains three pendant vertices, then $LP_{n,m}$ is not a $2$-DM graph; and (vi) for $m_1$ = 1 to 22, we obtain all possible values of $m$ for which $LP_{1, m}$ = $u_1 + (K_{m_1} \cup K_{m_2})$ is 2-DM, $m_1 \leq m_2$, $m = m_1+m_2 \geq 3$ and $m_1,m_2\in\mathbb{N}$.
Burling graphs as intersection graphs
For a subset $ S $ of $ \mathbb R^d$, $ S$-graphs are the intersection graphs of specific transformations of $ S $. The class of Burling graphs is a class of triangle-free graphs with arbitrarily large chromatic number that has attracted much attention in the last years. In 2012, Pawlik, Kozik, Krawczyk, Lasoń, Micek, Trotter, and Walczak showed that for every compact and path-connected set $ S \subseteq \mathbb R^2$ that is different from an axis-parallel rectangle, the class of $ S $-graphs contains all Burling graphs. There is, however, a gap between the two classes. In recent years, there have been improvements in understanding the subclasses of $ S $-graphs that are closer or equal to Burling graphs. In this article, we close this gap for every set $ S $ with the mentioned properties: we introduce the class of constrained $ S $-graphs, a subclass of $ S$-graphs, and prove that it is equal to the class of Burling graphs. We also introduce the class of constrained graphs, a subclass of intersection graphs of subsets of $ \mathbb R^2$, and prove that it is equal to the class of Burling graphs.
Directed graphs with lower orientation Ramsey thresholds

We investigate the threshold $p_{\vec H}=p_{\vec H}(n)$ for the Ramsey-type property $G(n,p)\to \vec H$, where $G(n,p)$ is the binomial random graph and $G\to\vec H$ indicates that every orientation of the graph $G$ contains the oriented graph $\vec H$ as a subdigraph. Similarly to the classical Ramsey setting, the upper bound $p_{\vec H}\leq Cn^{-1/m_2(\vec H)}$ is known to hold for some constant $C=C(\vec H)$, where $m_2(\vec H)$ denotes the maximum $2$-density of the underlying graph $H$ of $\vec H$. While this upper bound is indeed the threshold for some $\vec H$, this is not always the case. We obtain examples arising from rooted products of orientations of sparse graphs (such as forests, cycles and, more generally, subcubic $\{K_3,K_{3,3}\}$-free graphs) and arbitrarily rooted transitive triangles.

Seymour's Second Neighborhood Conjecture (SNC) states that every oriented graph contains a vertex whose second neighborhood is as large as its first neighborhood. We investigate the SNC for orientations of both binomial and pseudo random graphs, verifying the SNC asymptotically almost surely (a.a.s.)
(i) for all orientations of $G(n,p)$ if $\limsup_{n\to\infty} p < 1/4$; and
(ii) for a uniformly-random orientation of each weakly $(p,A\sqrt{np})$-bijumbled graph of order $n$ and density $p$, where $p=Ω(n^{-1/2})$ and $1-p = Ω(n^{-1/6})$ and $A>0$ is a universal constant independent of both $n$ and $p$.
We also show that a.a.s. the SNC holds for almost every orientation of $G(n,p)$. More specifically, we prove that a.a.s.
(iii) for all $\varepsilon > 0$ and $p=p(n)$ with $\limsup_{n\to\infty} p \le 2/3-\varepsilon$, every orientation of $G(n,p)$ with minimum outdegree $Ω_\varepsilon(\sqrt{n})$ satisfies the SNC; and
(iv) for all $p=p(n)$, a random orientation of $G(n,p)$ satisfies the SNC.

This paper constructs a novel Hopf algebra $\mathsf{cf}(\mathrm{UT}_{\bullet})$ on the class functions of the unipotent upper triangular groups $\mathrm{UT}_{n}(\mathbb{F}_{q})$ over a finite field. This construction is representation theoretic in nature and uses the machinery of Hopf monoids in the category of vector species. In contrast with a similar known construction, this Hopf algebra has the property that induction to the finite general linear group induces a homomorphism to Zelevinsky's Hopf algebra of $\mathrm{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{F}_{q})$ class functions. Furthermore, $\mathsf{cf}(\mathrm{UT}_{\bullet})$ contains a Hopf subalgebra which is isomorphic to a known combiantorial Hopf algebra, previously used to prove a conjecture about chromatic quasisymmetric functions. Some additional Hopf algebraic properties are also established.

In 1930, Ramsey proved that every infinite graph contains either an infinite clique or an infinite independent set as an induced subgraph. König proved that every infinite graph contains either a ray or a vertex of infinite degree. In this paper, we establish the 2-connected analog of these results.

For an integer $k \geq 2$, an ordered $k$-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{H}=(H,<)$ is a $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$ together with a fixed linear ordering $<$ of its vertex set. The ordered Ramsey number $\overline{R}(\mathcal{H},\mathcal{G})$ of two ordered $k$-uniform hypergraphs $\mathcal{H}$ and $\mathcal{G}$ is the smallest $N \in \mathbb{N}$ such that every red-blue coloring of the hyperedges of the ordered complete $k$-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{K}^{(k)}_N$ on $N$ vertices contains a blue copy of $\mathcal{H}$ or a red copy of $\mathcal{G}$.
The ordered Ramsey numbers are quite extensively studied for ordered graphs, but little is known about ordered hypergraphs of higher uniformity. We provide some of the first nontrivial estimates on ordered Ramsey numbers of ordered 3-uniform hypergraphs. In particular, we prove that for all $d,n \in \mathbb{N}$ and for every ordered $3$-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ on $n$ vertices with maximum degree $d$ and with interval chromatic number $3$ there is an $\varepsilon=\varepsilon(d)>0$ such that $$\overline{R}(\mathcal{H},\mathcal{H}) \leq 2^{O(n^{2-\varepsilon})}.$$ In fact, we prove this upper bound for the number $\overline{R}(\mathcal{G},\mathcal{K}^{(3)}_3(n))$, where $\mathcal{G}$ is an ordered 3-uniform hypergraph with $n$ vertices and maximum degree $d$ and $\mathcal{K}^{(3)}_3(n)$ is the ordered complete tripartite hypergraph with consecutive color classes of size $n$. We show that this bound is not far from the truth by proving $\overline{R}(\mathcal{H},\mathcal{K}^{(3)}_3(n)) \geq 2^{Ω(n\log{n})}$ for some fixed ordered $3$-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$.
Spanning trees in sparse expanders
Given integers $n\ge Δ\ge 2$, let $\mathcal{T}(n, Δ)$ be the collection of all $n$-vertex trees with maximum degree at most $Δ$. A question of Alon, Krivelevich and Sudakov in 2007 asks for determining the best possible spectral gap condition forcing an $(n, d,λ)$-graph to be $\mathcal{T}(n, Δ)$-universal, namely, it contains all members of $\mathcal{T}(n, Δ)$ as a subgraph simultaneously. In this paper we show that for sufficiently large integer $n$ and all $Δ\in \mathbb{N}$, every $(n, d,λ)$-graph with \[ λ\le\frac{d}{2Δ^{5\sqrt{\log n}}} \] is $\mathcal{T}(n, Δ)$-universal. As an immediate corollary, this implies that Alon's ingenious construction of triangle-free sparse expander is $\mathcal{T}(n, Δ)$-universal, which provides an explicit construction of such graphs and thus solves a question of Johannsen, Krivelevich and Samotij. Our main result is formulated under a much more general context, namely, the $(n,d)$-expanders. More precisely, we show that there exist absolute constants $C,c>0$ such that the following statement holds for sufficiently large integer $n$.
(1).For all $Δ\in \mathbb{N}$, every $(n, Δ^{5\sqrt{\log n}})$-expander is $\mathcal{T}(n, Δ)$-universal.
(2).For all $Δ\in \mathbb{N}$ with $Δ\le c\sqrt{n}$, every $(n, CΔn^{1/2})$-expander is $\mathcal{T}(n, Δ)$-universal.
Both results significantly improve a result of Johannsen, Krivelevich and Samotij, and have further implications in locally sparse expanders and Maker-Breaker games that also improve previously known results drastically.
An improvement of sufficient condition for $k$-leaf-connected graphs

For integer $k\geq2,$ a graph $G$ is called $k$-leaf-connected if $|V(G)|\geq k+1$ and given any subset $S\subseteq V(G)$ with $|S|=k,$ $G$ always has a spanning tree $T$ such that $S$ is precisely the set of leaves of $T.$ Thus a graph is $2$-leaf-connected if and only if it is Hamilton-connected. In this paper, we present a best possible condition based upon the size to guarantee a graph to be $k$-leaf-connected, which not only improves the results of Gurgel and Wakabayashi [On $k$-leaf-connected graphs, J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 41 (1986) 1-16] and Ao, Liu, Yuan and Li [Improved sufficient conditions for $k$-leaf-connected graphs, Discrete Appl. Math. 314 (2022) 17-30], but also extends the result of Xu, Zhai and Wang [An improvement of spectral conditions for Hamilton-connected graphs, Linear Multilinear Algebra, 2021]. Our key approach is showing that an $(n+k-1)$-closed non-$k$-leaf-connected graph must contain a large clique if its size is large enough. As applications, sufficient conditions for a graph to be $k$-leaf-connected in terms of the (signless Laplacian) spectral radius of $G$ or its complement are also presented.

Van der Waerden's theorem states that for any positive integers $k$ and $r$, there exists a smallest value $n = w(k,r)$, called the van der Waerden number, such that every $r$-coloring of $\{1,\dots,n\}$ contains a monochromatic $k$-term arithmetic progression. We consider two variants of van der Waerden numbers: the numbers $n = n(AP_D,k;r)$, the smallest value where every $r$-coloring of $\{1,\dots,n\}$ contains a monochromatic $k$-term arithmetic progression with common difference in $D$, and the numbers $n = Δ(D,k;r)$, the smallest value $n$ where every $r$-coloring of $\{1,\dots,n\}$ contains a sequence $x_1 < \dots < x_k$ where the differences between consecutive terms are members of $D$. We study the case when $D$ is set of Fibonacci numbers $F$ and give improved bounds for the largest $r$ where $n(AP_F,k;r)$ and $Δ(F,k;r)$ exist for all $k$. Moreover, we give some computational data on $Δ(D,k;r)$ for other sets $D$.
Critical ($P_5$,bull)-free graphs
Given two graphs $H_1$ and $H_2$, a graph is $(H_1,H_2)$-free if it contains no induced subgraph isomorphic to $H_1$ or $H_2$. Let $P_t$ and $C_t$ be the path and the cycle on $t$ vertices, respectively. A bull is the graph obtained from a triangle with two disjoint pendant edges. In this paper, we show that there are finitely many 5-vertex-critical ($P_5$,bull)-free graphs.
Injective split systems

A split system $\mathcal S$ on a finite set $X$, $|X|\ge3$, is a set of bipartitions or splits of $X$ which contains all splits of the form $\{x,X-\{x\}\}$, $x \in X$. To any such split system $\mathcal S$ we can associate the Buneman graph $\mathcal B(\mathcal S)$ which is essentially a median graph with leaf-set $X$ that displays the splits in $\mathcal S$. In this paper, we consider properties of injective split systems, that is, split systems $\mathcal S$ with the property that $\mathrm{med}_{\mathcal B(\mathcal S)}(Y) \neq \mathrm{med}_{\mathrm B(\mathcal S)}(Y')$ for any 3-subsets $Y,Y'$ in $X$, where $\mathrm {med}_{\mathcal B(\mathcal S)}(Y)$ denotes the median in $\mathcal B(\mathcal S)$ of the three elements in $Y$ considered as leaves in $\mathcal B(\mathcal S)$. In particular, we show that for any set $X$ there always exists an injective split system on $X$, and we also give a characterization for when a split system is injective. We also consider how complex the Buneman graph $\mathcal B(\mathcal S)$ needs to become in order for a split system $\mathcal S$ on $X$ to be injective. We do this by introducing a quantity for $|X|$ which we call the injective dimension for $|X|$, as well as two related quantities, called the injective 2-split and the rooted-injective dimension. We derive some upper and lower bounds for all three of these dimensions and also prove that some of these bounds are tight. An underlying motivation for studying injective split systems is that they can be used to obtain a natural generalization of symbolic tree maps. An important consequence of our results is that any three-way symbolic map on $X$ can be represented using Buneman graphs.
Large $(k; r, s; n, q)$-sets in Projective Spaces
A $(k; r, s; n, q)$-set (short: $(r,s)$-set) of $\mathrm{PG}(n, q)$ is a set of points $X$ with $|X| = k$ such that no $s$-space contains more than $r$ points of $X$. We investigate the asymptotic size of $(r, s)$-sets for $n$ fixed and $q \rightarrow \infty$. In particular, we show the existence of $(3, 2)$-sets of size $(1+o(1)) q^{3/2}$ for $n=6$, $(4, 2)$-sets of size $(1+o(1)) q^{\frac{n-1}{2}}$, and $(9, 2)$-sets of size $(1+o(1)) q^2$ for $n=4$. We also generalize a bound by Rao from 1947 and show that an $(r,s)$-set has size at most $O(q^{\frac{n-e+1}{e}})$ if there exist integers $d,e \geq 2$ such that $s=d(e-1)$ and $r=de-1$.

In the classical coupon collector's problem, every box of breakfast cereal contains one coupon from a collection of n distinct coupons, each equally likely to appear. The goal is to find the expected number of boxes a player needs to purchase to complete the whole collection. In this work, we extend the classical problem to k players who compete with one another to be the first to collect the whole collection. We find the expected numbers of boxes required for the slowest and fastest players to finish the game. The odds of a particular player being the slowest or fastest player will also be touched upon. The solutions will be discussed from both the tractable algebraic techniques as well as the probability point of views.

We prove that every properly edge-colored $n$-vertex graph with average degree at least $100(\log n)^2$ contains a rainbow cycle, improving upon $(\log n)^{2+o(1)}$ bound due to Tomon. We also prove that every properly colored $n$-vertex graph with at least $10^5 k^2 n^{1+1/k}$ edges contains a rainbow $2k$-cycle, which improves the previous bound $2^{ck^2}n^{1+1/k}$ obtained by Janzer.
Our method using homomorphism inequalities and a lopsided regularization lemma also provides a simple way to prove the Erdős--Simonovits supersaturation theorem for even cycles, which may be of independent interest.

We show that $k$-uniform hypergraphs on $n$ vertices whose codegree is at least $(2/3 + o(1))n$ can be decomposed into tight cycles, subject to the trivial divisibility conditions. As a corollary, we show those graphs contain tight Euler tours as well. In passing, we also investigate decompositions into tight paths.
In addition, we also prove an alternative condition for building absorbers for edge-decompositions of arbitrary $k$-uniform hypergraphs, which should be of independent interest.
Bounds on the Higher Degree Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv Constants over $\mathbb{F}_q^n$

The classical Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv constant of a group $G$ denotes the smallest positive integer $\ell$ such that any sequence $S$ of length at least $\ell$ contains a zero-sum subsequence of length $\exp(G)$.
In a recent paper, Caro and Schmitt generalized this concept, using the $m$-th degree symmetric polynomial $e_m(S)$ instead of the sum of the elements of $S$ and considering subsequences of a given length $t$. In particular, they defined the higher degree Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv constants $EGZ(t,R,m)$ of a finite commutative ring $R$ and presented several lower and upper bounds to these constants.
This paper aims to provide lower and upper bounds for $EGZ(t,R,m)$ in case $R=\mathbb{F}_q^{n}$. The lower bounds here presented have been obtained, respectively, using Lovász Local Lemma and the Expurgation method and, for sufficiently large $n$, they beat the lower bound provided by Caro and Schmitt for the same kind of rings. Finally, we prove closed form upper bounds derived from the Ellenberg-Gijswijt and Sauermann results for the cap-set problem assuming that $q = p^k$, $t = p$, and $m=p-1$. Moreover, using the Slice Rank method we derive a convex optimization problem that provides the best bounds for $q = 3^k$, $t = 3$, $m=2$ and $k=2,3,4,5$.
