Maximum size of $C_{\leq k}$-free strong digraphs with out-degree at least two
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\mathscr{H}$ be a family of digraphs. A digraph $D$ is \emph{$\mathscr{H}$-free} if it contains no isomorphic copy of any member of $\mathscr{H}$. For $k\geq2$, we set $C_{\leq k}=\{C_{2}, C_{3},\ldots,C_{k}\}$, where $C_{\ell}$ is a directed cycle of length $\ell\in\{2,3,\ldots,k\}$. Let $D_{n}^{k}(ξ,ζ)$ denote the family of \emph{${C}_{\le k}$-free} strong digraphs on $n$ vertices with every vertex having out-degree at least $ξ$ and in-degree at least $ζ$, where both $ξ$ and $ζ$ are positive integers. Let $\varphi_{n}^{k}(ξ,ζ)=\max\{|A(D)|:\;D\in D_{n}^{k}(ξ,ζ)\}$ and $Φ_{n}^{k}(ξ,ζ)=\{D\in D_{n}^{k}(ξ,ζ): |A(D)|=\varphi_{n}^{k}(ξ,ζ)\}$. Bermond et al.\;(1980) verified that $\varphi_{n}^{k}(1,1)=\binom{n-k+2}{2}+k-2$. Chen and Chang\;(2021) showed that $\binom{n-1}{2}-2\leq\varphi_{n}^{3}(2,1)\leq\binom{n-1}{2}$. This upper bound was further improved to $\binom{n-1}{2}-1$ by Chen and Chang\;(DAM, 2022), furthermore, they also gave the exact values of $\varphi_{n}^{3}(2,1)$ for $n\in \{7,8,9\}$. In this paper, we continue to determine the exact values of $\varphi_{n}^{3}(2,1)$ for $n\ge 10$, i.e., $\varphi_{n}^{3}(2,1)=\binom{n-1}{2}-2$ for $n\geq10$.

Minimizing the number of matchings of fixed size in a $K_s$-saturated graph
For a fixed graph $F$, a graph $G$ is said to be $F$-saturated if $G$ does not contain a subgraph isomorphic to $F$ but does contain $F$ after the addition of any new edge. Let $M_k$ be a matching consisting of $k$ edges and $S_{n,k}$ be the join graph of a complete graph $K_k$ and an empty graph $\overline{K_{n-k}}$. In this paper, we prove that for $s \geq3$ and $k\geq 2$, $S_{n,s-2}$ contains the minimum number of $M_k$ among all $n$-vertex $K_s$-saturated graphs for sufficiently large $n$, and when $k \leq s-2$, it is the unique extremal graph. In addition, we also show that $S_{n,1}$ is the unique extremal graph when $k=2$ and $s=3$.
Two stability theorems for $\mathcal{K}_{\ell + 1}^{r}$-saturated hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
An $\mathcal{F}$-saturated $r$-graph is a maximal $r$-graph not containing any member of $\mathcal{F}$ as a subgraph. Let $\mathcal{K}_{\ell + 1}^{r}$ be the collection of all $r$-graphs $F$ with at most $\binom{\ell+1}{2}$ edges such that for some $\left(\ell+1\right)$-set $S$ every pair $\{u, v\} \subset S$ is covered by an edge in $F$. Our first result shows that for each $\ell \geq r \geq 2$ every $\mathcal{K}_{\ell+1}^{r}$-saturated $r$-graph on $n$ vertices with $t_{r}(n, \ell) - o(n^{r-1+1/\ell})$ edges contains a complete $\ell$-partite subgraph on $(1-o(1))n$ vertices, which extends a stability theorem for $K_{\ell+1}$-saturated graphs given by Popielarz, Sahasrabudhe and Snyder. We also show that the bound is best possible. Our second result is motivated by a celebrated theorem of Andrásfai, Erdős and Sós which states that for $\ell \geq 2$ every $K_{\ell+1}$-free graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with minimum degree $δ(G) > \frac{3\ell-4}{3\ell-1}n$ is $\ell$-partite. We give a hypergraph version of it. The \emph{minimum positive co-degree} of an $r$-graph $\mathcal{H}$, denoted by $δ_{r-1}^{+}(\mathcal{H})$, is the maximum $k$ such that if $S$ is an $(r-1)$-set contained in a edge of $\mathcal{H}$, then $S$ is contained in at least $k$ distinct edges of $\mathcal{H}$. Let $\ell\ge 3$ be an integer and $\mathcal{H}$ be a $\mathcal{K}_{\ell+1}^3$-saturated $3$-graph on $n$ vertices. We prove that if either $\ell \ge 4$ and $δ_{2}^{+}(\mathcal{H}) > \frac{3\ell-7}{3\ell-1}n$; or $\ell = 3$ and $δ_{2}^{+}(\mathcal{H}) > 2n/7$, then $\mathcal{H}$ is $\ell$-partite; and the bound is best possible. This is the first stability result on minimum positive co-degree for hypergraphs.

Some exact values on Ramsey numbers related to fans
For two given graphs $F$ and $H$, the Ramsey number $R(F,H)$ is the smallest integer $N$ such that any red-blue edge-coloring of the complete graph $K_N$ contains a red $F$ or a blue $H$. When $F=H$, we simply write $R_2(H)$. For an positive integer $n$, let $K_{1,n}$ be a star with $n+1$ vertices, $F_n$ be a fan with $2n+1$ vertices consisting of $n$ triangles sharing one common vertex, and $nK_3$ be a graph with $3n$ vertices obtained from the disjoint union of $n$ triangles. In 1975, Burr, Erdős and Spencer \cite{B} proved that $R_2(nK_3)=5n$ for $n\ge2$. However, determining the exact value of $R_2(F_n)$ is notoriously difficult. So far, only $R_2(F_2)=9$ has been proved. Notice that both $F_n$ and $nK_3$ contain $n$ triangles and $|V(F_n)|<|V(nK_3)|$ for all $n\ge 2$. Chen, Yu and Zhao (2021) speculated that $R_2(F_n)\le R_2(nK_3)=5n$ for $n$ sufficiently large. In this paper, we first prove that $R(K_{1,n},F_n)=3n-\varepsilon$ for $n\ge1$, where $\varepsilon=0$ if $n$ is odd and $\varepsilon=1$ if $n$ is even. Applying the exact values of $R(K_{1,n},F_n)$, we will confirm $R_2(F_n)\le 5n$ for $n=3$ by showing that $R_2(F_3)=14$.

Poset Ramsey number $R(P,Q_n)$. II. N-shaped poset
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given partially ordered sets (posets) $(P, \leq_P)$ and $(P', \leq_{P'})$, we say that $P'$ contains a copy of $P$ if for some injective function $f\colon P\rightarrow P'$ and for any $A, B\in P$, $A\leq _P B$ if and only if $f(A)\leq_{P'} f(B)$. For any posets $P$ and $Q$, the poset Ramsey number $R(P,Q)$ is the least positive integer $N$ such that no matter how the elements of an $N$-dimensional Boolean lattice are colored in blue and red, there is either a copy of $P$ with all blue elements or a copy of $Q$ with all red elements. We focus on the poset Ramsey number $R(P, Q_n)$ for a fixed poset $P$ and an $n$-dimensional Boolean lattice $Q_n$, as $n$ grows large. It is known that $n+c_1(P) \leq R(P,Q_n) \leq c_2(P) n$, for positive constants $c_1$ and $c_2$. However, there is no poset $P$ known, for which $R(P, Q_n)> (1+ε)n$, for $ε>0$. This paper is devoted to a new method for finding upper bounds on $R(P, Q_n)$ using a duality between copies of $Q_n$ and sets of elements that cover them, referred to as blockers. We prove several properties of blockers and their direct relation to the Ramsey numbers. Using these properties we show that $R(\mathcal{N},Q_n)=n+Θ(n/\log n)$, for a poset $\mathcal{N}$ with four elements $A, B, C, $ and $D$, such that $A<C$, $B<D$, $B<C$, and the remaining pairs of elements are incomparable.

Rainbow copies of $F$ in families of $H$
We study the following problem. How many distinct copies of $H$ can an $n$-vertex graph $G$ have, if $G$ does not contain a rainbow $F$, that is, a copy of $F$ where each edge is contained in a different copy of $H$? The case $H=K_r$ is equivalent to the Turán problem for Berge hypergraphs, which has attracted several researchers recently. We also explore the connection of our problem to the so-called generalized Turán problems. We obtain several exact results. In the particularly interesting symmetric case where $H=F$, we completely solve the case $F$ is the 3-edge path, and asymptitically solve the case $F$ is a book graph.

A note on unavoidable patterns in locally dense colourings
We show that there is a constant $C$ such that for every $\varepsilon>0$ any $2$-coloured $K_n$ with minimum degree at least $n/4+\varepsilon n$ in both colours contains a complete subgraph on $2t$ vertices where one colour class forms a $K_{t,t}$, provided that $n\geq \varepsilon^{-Ct}$. Also, we prove that if $K_n$ is $2$-coloured with minimum degree at least $\varepsilon n$ in both colours then it must contain one of two natural colourings of a complete graph. Both results are tight up to the value of $C$ and they answer two recent questions posed by Kamčev and Müyesser.

On the Turán number of the hypercube
Published • View Publication • BIB
In 1964, Erdős proposed the problem of estimating the Turán number of the $d$-dimensional hypercube $Q_d$. Since $Q_d$ is a bipartite graph with maximum degree $d$, it follows from results of Füredi and Alon, Krivelevich, Sudakov that $\mathrm{ex}(n,Q_d)=O_d(n^{2-1/d})$. A recent general result of Sudakov and Tomon implies the slightly stronger bound $\mathrm{ex}(n,Q_d)=o(n^{2-1/d})$. We obtain the first power-improvement for this old problem by showing that $\mathrm{ex}(n,Q_d)=O_d(n^{2-\frac{1}{d-1}+\frac{1}{(d-1)2^{d-1}}})$. This answers a question of Liu. Moreover, our techniques give a power improvement for a larger class of graphs than cubes. We use a similar method to prove that any $n$-vertex, properly edge-coloured graph without a rainbow cycle has at most $O(n(\log n)^2)$ edges, improving the previous best bound of $n(\log n)^{2+o(1)}$ by Tomon. Furthermore, we show that any properly edge-coloured $n$-vertex graph with $ω(n\log n)$ edges contains a cycle which is almost rainbow: that is, almost all edges in it have a unique colour. This latter result is tight.

Random Balanced Cayley Complexes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a finite group of order $n$ and for $1 \leq i \leq k+1$ let $V_i=\{i\} \times G$. Viewing each $V_i$ as a $0$-dimensional complex, let $Y_{G,k}$ denote the simplicial join $V_1*\cdots*V_{k+1}$. For $A \subset G$ let $Y_{A,k}$ be the subcomplex of $Y_{G,k}$ that contains the $(k-1)$-skeleton of $Y_{G,k}$ and whose $k$-simplices are all $\{(1,x_1),\ldots,(k+1,x_{k+1})\} \in Y_{G,k}$ such that $x_1\cdots x_{k+1} \in A$. Let $L_{k-1}$ denote the reduced $(k-1)$-th Laplacian of $Y_{A,k}$, acting on the space $C^{k-1}(Y_{A,k})$ of real valued $(k-1)$-cochains of $Y_{A,k}$. The $(k-1)$-th spectral gap $μ_{k-1}(Y_{A,k})$ of $Y_{A,k}$ is the minimal eigenvalue of $L_{k-1}$. The following $k$-dimensional analogue of the Alon-Roichman theorem is proved: Let $k \geq 1$ and $ε>0$ be fixed and let $A$ be a random subset of $G$ of size $m= \left\lceil\frac{10 k^2\log D}{ε^2}\right\rceil$ where $D$ is the sum of the degrees of the complex irreducible representations of $G$. Then \[ {\rm Pr}\big[~μ_{k-1}(Y_{A,k}) < (1-ε)m~\big] =O\left(\frac{1}{n}\right). \]

Spectral radius of graphs of given size with forbidden subgraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $ρ(G)$ be the spectral radius of a graph $G$ with $m$ edges. Let $S_{m-k+1}^{k}$ be the graph obtained from $K_{1,m-k}$ by adding $k$ disjoint edges within its independent set. Nosal's theorem states that if $ρ(G)>\sqrt{m}$, then $G$ contains a triangle. Zhai and Shu showed that any non-bipartite graph $G$ with $m\geq26$ and $ρ(G)\geqρ(S_{m}^{1})>\sqrt{m-1}$ contains a quadrilateral unless $G\cong S_{m}^{1}$ [M.Q. Zhai, J.L. Shu, Discrete Math. 345 (2022) 112630]. Wang proved that if $ρ(G)\geq\sqrt{m-1}$ for a graph $G$ with size $m\geq27$, then $G$ contains a quadrilateral unless $G$ is one of four exceptional graphs [Z.W. Wang, Discrete Math. 345 (2022) 112973]. In this paper, we show that any non-bipartite graph $G$ with size $m\geq51$ and $ρ(G)\geqρ(S_{m-1}^{2})>\sqrt{m-2}$ contains a quadrilateral unless $G$ is one of three exceptional graphs. Moreover, we show that if $ρ(G)\geqρ(S_{\frac{m+4}{2},2}^{-})$ for a graph $G$ with even size $m\geq74$, then $G$ contains a $C_{5}^{+}$ unless $G\cong S_{\frac{m+4}{2},2}^{-}$, where $C_{t}^{+}$ denotes the graph obtained from $C_{t}$ and $C_{3}$ by identifying an edge, $S_{n,k}$ denotes the graph obtained by joining each vertex of $K_{k}$ to $n-k$ isolated vertices and $S_{n,k}^{-}$ denotes the graph obtained by deleting an edge incident to a vertex of degree two, respectively.

Upper Bounds for Covering Arrays of Higher Index
A \emph{covering array} is an $N \times k$ array of elements from a $v$-ary alphabet such that every $N \times t$ subarray contains all $v^t$ tuples from the alphabet of size $t$ at least $λ$ times; this is denoted as $\CA_λ(N; t, k, v)$. Covering arrays have applications in the testing of large-scale complex systems; in systems that are nondeterministic, increasing $λ$ gives greater confidence in the system's correctness. The \emph{covering array number}, $\CAN_λ(t,k,v)$ is the smallest number of rows for which a covering array on the other parameters exists. For general $λ$, only several nontrivial bounds are known, the smallest of which was asymptotically $\log k + λ\log \log k + o(λ)$ when $v, t$ are fixed. Additionally it has been conjectured that the $\log \log k$ term can be removed. First, we affirm the conjecture by deriving an asymptotically optimal bound for $\CAN_λ(t,k,v)$ for general $λ$ and when $v, t$ are constant using the Stein--Lovász--Johnson paradigm. Second, we improve upon the constants of this method using the Lovász local lemma. Third, when $λ=2$, we extend a two-stage paradigm of Sarkar and Colbourn that improves on the general bound and often produces better bounds than even when $λ=1$ of other results. Fourth, we extend this two-stage paradigm further for general $λ$ to obtain an even stronger upper bound, including using graph coloring. And finally, we determine a bound on how large $λ$ can be for when the number of rows is fixed.
Perfect matchings in random sparsifications of Dirac hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
For all integers $n \geq k > d \geq 1$, let $m_{d}(k,n)$ be the minimum integer $D \geq 0$ such that every $k$-uniform $n$-vertex hypergraph $\mathcal H$ with minimum $d$-degree $δ_{d}(\mathcal H)$ at least $D$ has an optimal matching. For every fixed integer $k \geq 3$, we show that for $n \in k \mathbb{N}$ and $p = Ω(n^{-k+1} \log n)$, if $\mathcal H$ is an $n$-vertex $k$-uniform hypergraph with $δ_{k-1}(\mathcal H) \geq m_{k-1}(k,n)$, then a.a.s.\ its $p$-random subhypergraph $\mathcal H_p$ contains a perfect matching. Moreover, for every fixed integer $d < k$ and $γ> 0$, we show that the same conclusion holds if $\mathcal H$ is an $n$-vertex $k$-uniform hypergraph with $δ_d(\mathcal H) \geq m_{d}(k,n) + γ\binom{n - d}{k - d}$. Both of these results strengthen Johansson, Kahn, and Vu's seminal solution to Shamir's problem and can be viewed as ``robust'' versions of hypergraph Dirac-type results. In addition, we also show that in both cases above, $\mathcal H$ has at least $\exp((1-1/k)n \log n - Θ(n))$ many perfect matchings, which is best possible up to an $\exp(Θ(n))$ factor.

Clique factors in powers of graphs
The $k$th power of a graph $G$, denoted $G^k$, has the same vertex set as $G$, and two vertices are adjacent in $G^k$ if and only if there exists a path between them in $G$ of length at most $k$. A $K_r$-factor in a graph is a spanning subgraph in which every component is a complete graph of order $r$. It is easy to show that for any connected graph $G$ of order divisible by $r$, $G^{2r-2}$ contains a $K_r$-factor. This is best possible as there exist connected graphs $G$ of order divisible by $r$ such that $G^{2r-3}$ does not contain a $K_r$-factor. We conjecture that for any 2-connected graph $G$ of order divisible by $r$, $G^r$ contains a $K_r$-factor. This was known for $r \le 3$ and we prove it for $r = 4$. We prove a stronger statement that the vertex set of any 2-connected graph $G$ of order $4k$ can be partitioned into $k$ parts of size $4$, such that the four vertices in any part are contained in a subtree of $G$ of order at most 5. More generally, we conjecture that for any partition of $n = n_1+n_2+\cdots+n_k$, the vertex set of any 2-connected graph $G$ of order $n$ can be partitioned into $k$ parts $V_1,V_2,\ldots,V_k$, such that $|V_i| = n_i$ and $V_i \subseteq V(T_i)$ for some subtree $T_i$ of $G$ of order at most $n_i+1$, for $1 \le i \le k$.

Local aspects of the Sidorenko property for linear equations
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma 13 (2025) e177 • View Publication • BIB
A system of linear equations in $\mathbb{F}_p^n$ is \textit{Sidorenko} if any subset of $\mathbb{F}_p^n$ contains at least as many solutions to the system as a random set of the same density, asymptotically as $n\to \infty$. A system of linear equations is \textit{common} if any 2-colouring of $\mathbb{F}_p^n$ yields at least as many monochromatic solutions to the system of equations as a random 2-colouring, asymptotically as $n\to \infty$. Both classification problems remain wide open despite recent attention. We show that a certain generic family of systems of two linear equations is not Sidorenko. In fact, we show that systems in this family are not locally Sidorenko, and that systems in this family which do not contain additive tuples are not weakly locally Sidorenko. This endeavour answers a conjecture and question of Kamčev--Liebenau--Morrison. Insofar as methods, we observe that the true complexity of a linear system is not maintained under Fourier inversion; our main novelty is the use of higher-order methods in the frequency space of systems which have complexity one. We also give a shorter proof of the recent result of Kamčev--Liebenau--Morrison and independently Versteegen that any linear system containing a four term arithmetic progression is uncommon.

Set systems without a simplex, Helly hypergraphs and union-efficient families
We present equivalent formulations for concepts related to set families for which every subfamily with empty intersection has a bounded sub-collection with empty intersection. Hereby, we summarize the progress on the related questions about the maximum size of such families. In this work we solve a boundary case of a problem of Tuza for non-trivial $q$-Helly families, by applying Karamata's inequality and determining the minimum size of a $2$-self-centered graph for which the common neighborhood of every pair of vertices contains a clique of size $q-2$.
On the Generation, Structure, and Symmetries of Minimal Prime Graphs
In this paper we continue the study of prime graphs of finite solvable groups. The prime graph, or Gruenberg-Kegel graph, of a finite group G has vertices consisting of the prime divisors of the order of G and an edge from primes p to q if and only if G contains an element of order pq. Since the discovery of a simple, purely graph theoretical characterization of the prime graphs of solvable groups in 2015 these graphs have been studied in more detail from a graph theoretic angle. In this paper we explore several new aspects of these graphs. We characterize regular reseminant graphs and study the automorphisms of reseminant graphs for arbitrary base graphs. We then study minimal prime graphs on larger vertex sets by a novel regular graph construction for base graphs and by proving results on prime graph properties under graph products. Lastly, we present the first new way, different from vertex duplication, to obtain a new minimal prime graph from a given minimal prime graph.

Ramsey numbers of large even cycles and fans

For graphs $F$ and $H$, the Ramsey number $R(F, H)$ is the smallest positive integer $N$ such that any red/blue edge coloring of $K_N$ contains either a red $F$ or a blue $H$. Let $C_n$ be a cycle of length $n$ and $F_n$ be a fan consisting of $n$ triangles all sharing a common vertex. In this paper, we prove that for all sufficiently large $n$, \[ R(C_{2\lfloor an\rfloor}, F_n)= \left\{ \begin{array}{ll} (2+2a+o(1))n & \textrm{if $1/2\leq a< 1$,}\\ (4a+o(1))n & \textrm{if $ a\geq 1$.} \end{array} \right. \]

Subdigraphs of prescribed size and outdegree

In 2006, Noga Alon raised the following open problem: Does there exist an absolute constant $c>0$ such that every $2n$-vertex digraph with minimum out-degree at least $s$ contains an $n$-vertex subdigraph with minimum out-degree at least $\frac{s}{2}-c$ ? In this note, we answer this natural question in the negative, by showing that for arbitrarily large values of $n$ there exists a $2n$-vertex tournament with minimum out-degree $s=n-1$, in which every $n$-vertex subdigraph contains a vertex of out-degree at most $\frac{s}{2}-\left(\frac{1}{2}+o(1)\right)\log_3(s)$.
Incidence matrices for the class $\mathcal{O}_6$ of lines external to the twisted cubic in $\mathrm{PG}(3,q)$
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider the structures of the plane-line and point-line incidence matrices of the projective space $\mathrm{PG}(3,q)$ connected with orbits of planes, points, and lines under the stabilizer group of the twisted cubic. In the literature, lines are partitioned into classes, each of which is a union of line orbits. In this paper, for all $q$, even and odd, we determine the incidence matrices connected with a family of orbits of the class named $\mathcal{O}_6$. This class contains lines external to the twisted cubic. The considered family include an essential part of all $\mathcal{O}_6$ orbits, whose complete classification is an open problem.
