How many cards should you lay out in a game of EvenQuads?: A detailed study of caps in AG(n,2)
Published in Matematica 2(2), 382-419 (2023) • View Publication • BIB
We define a \textit{cap} in the affine geometry $AG(n,2)$ to be a subset in which any collection of 4 points is in general position. In this paper we classify, up to affine equivalence, all caps in $AG(n,2)$ of size $k \leq 9$. As a result, we obtain a complete characterization of caps in dimension $n \leq 6$, in particular complete and maximal caps. Since the \textit{EvenQuads} card deck is a model for $AG(6,2)$, as a consequence we determine the probability that an arbitrary $k$-card layout contains a quad.
Rainbow saturation for complete graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We call an edge-colored graph rainbow if all of its edges receive distinct colors. An edge-colored graph $Γ$ is called $H$-rainbow saturated if $Γ$ does not contain a rainbow copy of $H$ and adding an edge of any color to $Γ$ creates a rainbow copy of $H$. The rainbow saturation number $sat(n,{R}(H))$ is the minimum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $H$-rainbow saturated graph. Girão, Lewis, and Popielarz conjectured that $sat(n,{R}(K_r))=2(r-2)n+O(1)$ for fixed $r\geq 3$. Disproving this conjecture, we establish that for every $r\geq 3$, there exists a constant $α_r$ such that $$r + Ω\left(r^{1/3}\right) \le α_r \le r + r^{1/2} \qquad \text{and} \qquad sat(n,{R}(K_r)) = α_r n + O(1).$$ Recently, Behague, Johnston, Letzter, Morrison, and Ogden independently gave a slightly weaker upper bound which was sufficient to disprove the conjecture. They also introduced the weak rainbow saturation number, and asked whether this is equal to the rainbow saturation number of $K_r$, since the standard weak saturation number of complete graphs equals the standard saturation number. Surprisingly, our lower bound separates the rainbow saturation number from the weak rainbow saturation number, answering this question in the negative. The existence of the constant $α_r$ resolves another of their questions in the affirmative for complete graphs. Furthermore, we show that the conjecture of Girão, Lewis, and Popielarz is true if we have an additional assumption that the edge-colored $K_r$-rainbow saturated graph must be rainbow. As an ingredient of the proof, we study graphs which are $K_r$-saturated with respect to the operation of deleting one edge and adding two edges.

Bounds for the Grundy chromatic number of graphs in terms of domination number
Published in Bull. Belg. Math. Soc. Simon Stevin 29(2) (2022) 193--206 • View Publication • BIB
For any graph $G$, the Grundy (or First-Fit) chromatic number of $G$, denoted by $Γ(G)$ (also $χ_{_{\sf FF}}(G)$), is defined as the maximum number of colors used by the First-Fit (greedy) coloring of the vertices of $G$. Determining the Grundy number is $NP$-complete, and obtaining bounds for $Γ(G)$ in terms of the known graph parameters is an active research topic. By a star partition of $G$ we mean any partition of $V(G)$ into say $V_1, \ldots, V_k$ such that each $G[V_i]$ contains a vertex adjacent to any other vertex in $V_i$. In this paper using the star partition of graphs we obtain the first upper bounds for the Grundy number in terms of the domination number. We also prove some bounds in terms of the domination number and girth of graphs.

Quantitative Steinitz Theorem: A polynomial bound
Published • View Publication • BIB
The classical Steinitz theorem states that if the origin belongs to the interior of the convex hull of a set $S \subset \mathbb{R}^d$, then there are at most $2d$ points of $S$ whose convex hull contains the origin in the interior. Bárány, Katchalski, and Pach proved the following quantitative version of Steinitz's theorem. Let $Q$ be a convex polytope in $\mathbb{R}^d$ containing the standard Euclidean unit ball $\mathbf{B}^d$. Then there exist at most $2d$ vertices of $Q$ whose convex hull $Q^\prime$ satisfies \[ r \mathbf{B}^d \subset Q^\prime \] with $r\geq d^{-2d}$. They conjectured that $r\geq c d^{-1/2}$ holds with a universal constant $c>0$. We prove $r \geq \frac{1}{5d^2}$, the first polynomial lower bound on $r$. Furthermore, we show that $r$ is not be greater than $\frac{2}{\sqrt{d}}$.

An upper bound on the number of frequency hypercubes
Published in Discrete Math. 347(1) 2024, 113657(1-9) • View Publication • BIB
A frequency $n$-cube $F^n(q;l_0,...,l_{m-1})$ is an $n$-dimensional $q$-by-...-by-$q$ array, where $q = l_0+...+l_{m-1}$, filled by numbers $0,...,m-1$ with the property that each line contains exactly $l_i$ cells with symbol $i$, $i = 0,...,m-1$ (a line consists of $q$ cells of the array differing in one coordinate). The trivial upper bound on the number of frequency $n$-cubes is $m^{(q-1)^{n}}$. We improve that lower bound for $n>2$, replacing $q-1$ by a smaller value, by constructing a testing set of size $s^{n}$, $s<q-1$, for frequency $n$-cubes (a testing sets is a collection of cells of an array the values in which uniquely determine the array with given parameters). We also construct new testing sets for generalized frequency $n$-cubes, which are essentially correlation-immune functions in $n$ $q$-valued arguments; the cardinalities of new testing sets are smaller than for testing sets known before. Keywords: frequency hypercube, correlation-immune function, latin hypercube, testing set.
Induced subgraphs and tree-decompositions VII. Basic obstructions in $H$-free graphs
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series B, Volume 164, January 2024, Pages 443-472 • View Publication • BIB
We say a class $\mathcal{C}$ of graphs is clean if for every positive integer $t$ there exists a positive integer $w(t)$ such that every graph in $\mathcal{C}$ with treewidth more than $w(t)$ contains an induced subgraph isomorphic to one of the following: the complete graph $K_t$, the complete bipartite graph $K_{t,t}$, a subdivision of the $(t\times t)$-wall or the line graph of a subdivision of the $(t \times t)$-wall. In this paper, we adapt a method due to Lozin and Razgon (building on earlier ideas of Weißauer) to prove that the class of all $H$-free graphs (that is, graphs with no induced subgraph isomorphic to a fixed graph $H$) is clean if and only if $H$ is a forest whose components are subdivided stars. Their method is readily applied to yield the above characterization. However, our main result is much stronger: for every forest $H$ as above, we show that forbidding certain connected graphs containing $H$ as an induced subgraph (rather than $H$ itself) is enough to obtain a clean class of graphs. Along the proof of the latter strengthening, we build on a result of Davies and produce, for every positive integer $η$, a complete description of unavoidable connected induced subgraphs of a connected graph $G$ containing $η$ vertices from a suitably large given set of vertices in $G$. This is of independent interest, and will be used in subsequent papers in this series.

Universal Limit Theorem for Spectra of iterated inclusion-uniform Subdivisions
The main object of this work is the top-dimensional Laplacian operator of a simplicial complex $K$. We study its spectral limiting behavior under a given non-trivial subdivision procedure $\text{div}$. It will be shown that in case $\text{div}$ satisfies a property we call inclusion-uniformity its spectrum converges to a universal limiting distribution only depending on the dimension of $K$. This class of subdivisions contains important special cases such as the edgewise subdivision $\text{esd}_r$ for $r\geq 2$ and dimension $d=2$ or the barycentric subdivision $\text{sd}$. This parallels a result of Brenti and Welker showing that the roots of $f$-polynomials of iterated barycentric subdivisions converge to a universal set of roots only depending on the dimension of $K$. Furthermore we determine the family of universal limiting functions for the particular subdivision where the top dimensional faces are replaced by a cone over their boundary. We will show that this choice of $\text{div}$ is the natural generalization of graph subdivision in the spectral sense. These limits are obtained by explicit spectral decimation of the sequence of its dual graphs which is represented as a sequence of Schreier graphs on a rooted regular tree. Finally we will point out that a generic sequence of iterated subdivisions can be realized by a sequence of graphs as in spectral analysis on fractals. We will give a construction of a self-similar sequence of graphs which dualizes the iterated application of subdivision.

Planar #CSP Equality Corresponds to Quantum Isomorphism -- A Holant Viewpoint
Published • View Publication • BIB
Recently, Mančinska and Roberson proved that two graphs $G$ and $G'$ are quantum isomorphic if and only if they admit the same number of homomorphisms from all planar graphs. We extend this result to planar #CSP with any pair of sets $\mathcal{F}$ and $\mathcal{F}'$ of real-valued, arbitrary-arity constraint functions. Graph homomorphism is the special case where each of $\mathcal{F}$ and $\mathcal{F}'$ contains a single symmetric 0-1-valued binary constraint function. Our treatment uses the framework of planar Holant problems. To prove that quantum isomorphic constraint function sets give the same value on any planar #CSP instance, we apply a novel form of holographic transformation of Valiant, using the quantum permutation matrix $\mathcal{U}$ defining the quantum isomorphism. Due to the noncommutativity of $\mathcal{U}$'s entries, it turns out that this form of holographic transformation is only applicable to planar Holant. To prove the converse, we introduce the quantum automorphism group Qut$(\mathcal{F})$ of a set of constraint functions $\mathcal{F}$, and characterize the intertwiners of Qut$(\mathcal{F})$ as the signature matrices of planar Holant$(\mathcal{F}\,|\,\mathcal{EQ})$ quantum gadgets. Then we define a new notion of (projective) connectivity for constraint functions and reduce arity while preserving the quantum automorphism group. Finally, to address the challenges posed by generalizing from 0-1 valued to real-valued constraint functions, we adapt a technique of Lovász in the classical setting for isomorphisms of real-weighted graphs to the setting of quantum isomorphisms.

Extremal trees with respect to spectral radius of restrictedly weighted adjacency matrices
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a graph $G=(V,E)$ and $v_{i}\in V$, denote by $d_{i}$ the degree of vertex $v_{i}$. Let $f(x, y)>0$ be a real symmetric function in $x$ and $y$. The weighted adjacency matrix $A_{f}(G)$ of a graph $G$ is a square matrix, where the $(i,j)$-entry is equal to $\displaystyle f(d_{i}, d_{j})$ if the vertices $v_{i}$ and $v_{j}$ are adjacent and 0 otherwise. Li and Wang \cite{U9} tried to unify methods to study spectral radius of weighted adjacency matrices of graphs weighted by various topological indices. If $\displaystyle f'_{x}(x, y)\geq0$ and $\displaystyle f''_{x}(x, y)\geq0$, then $\displaystyle f(x, y)$ is said to be increasing and convex in variable $x$, respectively. They obtained the tree with the largest spectral radius of $A_{f}(G)$ is a star or a double star when $f(x, y)$ is increasing and convex in variable $x$. In this paper, we add the following restriction: $f(x_{1},y_{1})\geq f(x_{2},y_{2})$ if $x_{1}+y_{1}=x_{2}+y_{2}$ and $\mid x_{1}-y_{1}\mid>\mid x_{2}-y_{2}\mid$ and call $A_f(G)$ the restrictedly weighted adjacency matrix of $G$. The restrictedly weighted adjacency matrix contains weighted adjacency matrices weighted by first Zagreb index, first hyper-Zagreb index, general sum-connectivity index, forgotten index, Somber index, $p$-Sombor index and so on. We obtain the extremal trees with the smallest and the largest spectral radius of $A_{f}(G)$. Our results push ahead Li and Wang's research on unified approaches.
(P6, triangle)-free digraphs have bounded dichromatic number
Published • View Publication • BIB
The dichromatic number of an oriented graph is the minimum size of a partition of its vertices into acyclic induced subdigraphs. We prove that oriented graphs with no induced directed path on six vertices and no triangle have bounded dichromatic number. This is one (small) step towards the general conjecture asserting that for every oriented tree T and every integer k, any oriented graph that does not contain an induced copy of T nor a clique of size k has dichromatic number at most some function of k and T.

On Tomaszewski's Cube Vertices Problem
The following assertion was equivalent to a conjecture proposed by B. Tomaszewski : Let $C$ be an $n$-dimensional unit cube and let $H$ be a plank of thickness $1$, both are centered at the origin, then no matter how to turn the cube around, $C\cap H$ contains at least half of the cube's $2^n$ vertices. A lower bound for the number of the vertices of $C$ in $C\cap H$ was obtained.

Disjoint faces in simple drawings of the complete graph and topological Heilbronn problems
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a complete simple topological graph $G$, a $k$-face generated by $G$ is the open bounded region enclosed by the edges of a non-self-intersecting $k$-cycle in $G$. Interestingly, there are complete simple topological graphs with the property that every odd face it generates contains the origin. In this paper, we show that every complete $n$-vertex simple topological graph generates at least $Ω(n^{1/3})$ pairwise disjoint 4-faces. As an immediate corollary, every complete simple topological graph on $n$ vertices drawn in the unit square generates a 4-face with area at most $O(n^{-1/3})$. Finally, we investigate a $\mathbb Z_2$ variant of Heilbronn triangle problem.
Graphs with equal Grundy domination and independence number
The Grundy domination number, ${γ_{\rm gr}}(G)$, of a graph $G$ is the maximum length of a sequence $(v_1,v_2,\ldots, v_k)$ of vertices in $G$ such that for every $i\in \{2,\ldots, k\}$, the closed neighborhood $N[v_i]$ contains a vertex that does not belong to any closed neighborhood $N[v_j]$, where $j<i$. It is well known that the Grundy domination number of any graph $G$ is greater than or equal to the upper domination number $Γ(G)$, which is in turn greater than or equal to the independence number $α(G)$. In this paper, we initiate the study of the class of graphs $G$ with $Γ(G)={γ_{\rm gr}}(G)$ and its subclass consisting of graphs $G$ with $α(G)={γ_{\rm gr}}(G)$. We characterize the latter class of graphs among all twin-free connected graphs, provide a number of properties of these graphs, and prove that the hypercubes are members of this class. In addition, we give several necessary conditions for graphs $G$ with $Γ(G)={γ_{\rm gr}}(G)$ and present large families of such graphs.

Tutte Embeddings of Tetrahedral Meshes
Published in Discrete Comput Geom (2023) • View Publication • BIB
Tutte's embedding theorem states that every 3-connected graph without a $K_5$ or $K_{3,3}$ minor (i.e. a planar graph) is embedded in the plane if the outer face is in convex position and the interior vertices are convex combinations of their neighbors. We show that this result extends to simply connected tetrahedral meshes in a natural way: for the tetrahedral mesh to be embedded if the outer polyhedron is in convex position and the interior vertices are convex combination of their neighbors it is sufficient (but not necessary) that the graph of the tetrahedral mesh contains no $K_6$ and no $K_{3,3,1}$, and all triangles incident on three boundary vertices are boundary triangles.

Antidirected subgraphs of oriented graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that for every $η>0$ every sufficiently large $n$-vertex oriented graph D of minimum semidegree exceeding $(1 + η) k/2$ contains every balanced antidirected tree with $k$ edges and bounded maximum degree, if $k \ge ηn$. In particular, this asymptotically confirms a conjecture of the first author for long antidirected paths and dense digraphs. Further, we show that in the same setting, D contains every $k$-edge antidirected subdivision of a sufficiently small complete graph, if the paths of the subdivision that have length 1 or 2 span a forest. As a special case, we can find all antidirected cycles of length at most $k$. Finally, we address a conjecture of Addario-Berry, Havet, Linhares Sales, Reed and Thomassé for antidirected trees in digraphs. We show that this conjecture is asymptotically true in $n$-vertex oriented graphs for all balanced antidirected trees of bounded maximum degree and of size linear in $n$.

Resolving Prime Modules: The Structure of Pseudo-cographs and Galled-Tree Explainable Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The modular decomposition of a graph $G$ is a natural construction to capture key features of $G$ in terms of a labeled tree $(T,t)$ whose vertices are labeled as "series" ($1$), "parallel" ($0$) or "prime". However, full information of $G$ is provided by its modular decomposition tree $(T,t)$ only, if $G$ is a cograph, i.e., $G$ does not contain prime modules. In this case, $(T,t)$ explains $G$, i.e., $\{x,y\}\in E(G)$ if and only if the lowest common ancestor $\mathrm{lca}_T(x,y)$ of $x$ and $y$ has label "$1$". Pseudo-cographs, or, more general, GaTEx graphs $G$ are graphs that can be explained by labeled galled-trees, i.e., labeled networks $(N,t)$ that are obtained from the modular decomposition tree $(T,t)$ of $G$ by replacing the prime vertices in $T$ by simple labeled cycles. GaTEx graphs can be recognized and labeled galled-trees that explain these graphs can be constructed in linear time. In this contribution, we provide a novel characterization of GaTEx graphs in terms of a set $\mathfrak{F}_{\mathrm{GT}}$ of 25 forbidden induced subgraphs. This characterization, in turn, allows us to show that GaTEx graphs are closely related to many other well-known graph classes such as $P_4$-sparse and $P_4$-reducible graphs, weakly-chordal graphs, perfect graphs with perfect order, comparability and permutation graphs, murky graphs as well as interval graphs, Meyniel graphs or very strongly-perfect and brittle graphs. Moreover, we show that every GaTEx graph as twin-width at most 1 and and provide linear-time algorithms to solve several NP-hard problems (clique, coloring, independent set) on GaTEx graphs by utilizing the structure of the underlying galled-trees they explain.
Enumerating numerical sets associated to a numerical semigroup
Published • View Publication • BIB
A numerical set $T$ is a subset of $\mathbb N_0$ that contains $0$ and has finite complement. The atom monoid of $T$ is the set of $x \in \mathbb N_0$ such that $x+T \subseteq T$. Marzuola and Miller introduced the anti-atom problem: how many numerical sets have a given atom monoid? This is equivalent to asking for the number of integer partitions with a given set of hook lengths. We introduce the void poset of a numerical semigroup $S$ and show that numerical sets with atom monoid $S$ are in bijection with certain order ideals of this poset. We use this characterization to answer the anti-atom problem when $S$ has small type.
Cutting corners

We say that a subset $M$ of $\mathbb R^n$ is exponentially Ramsey if there are $ε>0$ and $n_0$ such that $χ(\mathbb R^n,M)\ge(1+ε)^n$ for any $n>n_0$, where $χ(\mathbb R^n,M)$ stands for the minimum number of colors in a coloring of $\mathbb R^n$ such that no copy of $M$ is monochromatic. One important result in Euclidean Ramsey theory is due to Frankl and Rödl, and states the following (under some mild extra conditions): if both $N_1$ and $N_2$ are exponentially Ramsey then so is $N_1\times N_2$. Applied several times to two-point sets, this result implies that any subset of a `hyperrectangle' is exponentially Ramsey. However, generally, such `embeddings' result in very inefficient bounds on the aforementioned $ε$. In this paper, we present another way of combining exponentially Ramsey sets, which gives much better estimates in some important cases. In particular, we show that the chromatic number of $\mathbb R^n$ with a forbidden equilateral triangle satisfies $χ(\mathbb R^n,\triangle)\ge\big(1.0742...+o(1)\big)^n$, greatly improving upon the previous constant $1.0144$. We also obtain similar strong results for regular simplices of larger dimensions, as well as for related geometric Ramsey-type questions in Manhattan norm. We then show that the same technique implies several interesting corollaries in other combinatorial problems. In particular, we give an explicit upper bound on the size of a family $\mathcal F\subset2^{[n]}$ that contains no weak $k$-sunflowers, i.e. no collection of $k$ sets with pairwise intersections of the same size. This bound improves upon previously known results for all $k\ge4$. Finally, we also present a simple deduction of the (other) celebrated Frankl--Rödl theorem from an earlier result of Frankl and Wilson. It gives probably the shortest known proof of Frankl and Rödl result with the most efficient bounds.

On higher dimensional point sets in general position

A finite point set in $\mathbb{R}^d$ is in general position if no $d + 1$ points lie on a common hyperplane. Let $α_d(N)$ be the largest integer such that any set of $N$ points in $\mathbb{R}^d$, with no $d + 2$ members on a common hyperplane, contains a subset of size $α_d(N)$ in general position. Using the method of hypergraph containers, Balogh and Solymosi showed that $α_2(N) < N^{5/6 + o(1)}$. In this paper, we also use the container method to obtain new upper bounds for $α_d(N)$ when $d \geq 3$. More precisely, we show that if $d$ is odd, then $α_d(N) < N^{\frac{1}{2} + \frac{1}{2d} + o(1)}$, and if $d$ is even, we have $α_d(N) < N^{\frac{1}{2} + \frac{1}{d-1} + o(1)}$. We also study the classical problem of determining $a(d,k,n)$, the maximum number of points selected from the grid $[n]^d$ such that no $k + 2$ members lie on a $k$-flat, and improve the previously best known bound for $a(d,k,n)$, due to Lefmann in 2008, by a polynomial factor when $k$ = 2 or 3 (mod 4).

Positivity properties for spherical functions of maximal Young subgroups
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $S_k \times S_{n-k}$ be a maximal Young subgroup of the symmetric group $S_n$. We introduce a basis ${\mathcal B}_{n,k}$ for the coset space $S_n/S_k \times S_{n-k}$ that is naturally parametrized by the set of standard Young tableaux with $n$ boxes, at most two rows, and at most $k$ boxes in the second row. The basis ${\mathcal B}_{n,k}$ has positivity properties that resemble those of a root system, and there is a composition series of the coset space in which each term is spanned by the basis elements that it contains. We prove that the spherical functions of the associated Gelfand pair are nonnegative linear combinations of the ${\mathcal B}_{n,k}$.
