On Bruhat intervals of small lengths for Weyl groups
The number of Bruhat intervals in Coxeter groups is finite, and for the first few lengths, the intervals were described up to an isomorphism by A. Hultman using the correspondence between Bruhat intervals and cell decompositions of a 2d sphere and straightforward computations. The main purpose of this paper consists of a description of the intervals in higher dimensions, as the Hultman's geometric method is hard to apply due to rapidly growing with length number of nonisomorphic intervals. We construct an invariant on subintervals in the Bruhat graphs, using their specific properties. This gives us a method of comparing two Bruhat interval, that is faster than the general algorithm for checking if two graphs are isomorphic. This construction is inductive, and thus, can be easily applied for any interval length and Weyl group.

Kazhdan--Lusztig cells of $\mathbf{a}$-value 2 in $\mathbf{a}(2)$-finite Coxeter systems
Published • View Publication • BIB
A Coxeter group is said to be \emph{$\mathbf{a}(2)$-finite} if it has finitely many elements of $\mathbf{a}$-value 2 in the sense of Lusztig. In this paper, we give explicit combinatorial descriptions of the left, right, and two-sided Kazhdan--Lusztig cells of $\mathbf{a}$-value 2 in an irreducible $\mathbf{a}(2)$-finite Coxeter group. In particular, we introduce elements we call \emph{stubs} to parameterize the one-sided cells and we characterize the one-sided cells via both star operations and weak Bruhat orders. We also compute the cardinalities of all the one-sided and two-sided cells.
Join operation for the Bruhat order and Verma modules
Published in Israel Journal of Mathematics 263, 627-691 (2024) • View Publication • BIB
We observe that the join operation for the Bruhat order on a Weyl group agrees with the intersections of Verma modules in type $A$. The statement is not true in other types, and we propose a conjectural statement of a weaker correspondence. Namely, we introduce distinguished subsets of the Weyl group on which the join operation conjecturally agrees with the intersections of Verma modules. We also relate our conjecture with a statement about the socles of the cokernels of inclusions between Verma modules. The latter determines the first Ext spaces between a simple module and a Verma module. We give a conjectural complete description of such socles, which we verify in a number of cases. Along the way, we determine the poset structure of the join-irreducible elements in Weyl groups and obtain closed formulae for certain families of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials.

Alternating sign matrices and Verma modules
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that the poset of alternating sign matrices, with Bruhat order, is isomorphic to the poset of certain submodules of the dominant Verma module for the special linear Lie algebra $\frak{sl}_n$. The latter poset consists of the intersections of Verma submodules and can also be defined in terms of a Kazhdan-Lusztig cell.

Counting weighted maximal chains in the circular Bruhat order
Published • View Publication • BIB
The totally nonnegative Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}(k,n)_{\geq0}$ is the subset of the real Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}(k,n)$ consisting of points with all nonnegative Plücker coordinates. The circular Bruhat order is a poset isomorphic to the face poset of A. Postnikov's (2005) positroid cell decomposition of $\mathrm{Gr}(k,n)_{\geq0}$. We provide a closed formula for the sum of its weighted chains in the spirit of J. Stembridge (2002).

Boolean intersection ideals of permutations in the Bruhat order
Published • View Publication • BIB
Motivated by recent work with Mazorchuk, we characterize the conditions under which the intersection of two principal order ideals in the Bruhat order is boolean. That characterization is presented in three versions: in terms of reduced words, in terms of permutation patterns, and in terms of permutation support. The equivalence of these properties follows from an analysis of what it means to have a specific letter repeated in a permutation's reduced words; namely, that a specific 321-pattern appears.

The Möbius function on Affine Grassmannian elements
To any saturated chain in the affine Weyl group whose translation parts are sufficiently regular, we associate a near path and a far path in the quantum Bruhat graph. Using this, working in the Bruhat order on the minimal-length representatives of the cosets in the affine Weyl group with respect to the finite Weyl group, we characterize the pairs of elements for which the Möbius function is nonzero. This is applied to obtain explicit expansions in the $K$-theory of affine Grassmannians, of the basis of ideal sheaves into the basis of structure sheaves of Schubert varieties.
Higher Bruhat orders of types B and C
Published • View Publication • BIB
We propose versions of higher Bruhat orders for types $B$ and $C$. This is based on a theory of higher Bruhat orders of type~A and their geometric interpretations (due to Manin--Shekhtman, Voevodskii--Kapranov, and Ziegler), and on our study of the so-called symmetric cubillages of cyclic zonotopes.

Intersecting principal Bruhat ideals and grades of simple modules
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that the grades of simple modules indexed by boolean permutations, over the incidence algebra of the symmetric group with respect to the Bruhat order, are given by Lusztig's a-function. Our arguments are combinatorial, and include a description of the intersection of two principal order ideals when at least one permutation is boolean. An important object in our work is a reduced word written as minimally many runs of consecutive integers, and one step of our argument shows that this minimal quantity is equal to the length of the second row in the permutation's shape under the Robinson-Schensted correspondence. We also prove that a simple module over the above-mentioned incidence algebra is perfect if and only if its index is the longest element of a parabolic subgroup.

Involutions under Bruhat order and labeled Motzkin Paths
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this note, we introduce a statistic on Motzkin paths that describes the rank generating function of Bruhat order for involutions. Our proof relies on a bijection introduced by Philippe Biane from permutations to certain labeled Motzkin paths and a recently introduced interpretation of this rank generating function in terms of visible inversions. By restricting our identity to fixed-point-free (FPF) involutions, we recover an identity due to Louis Billera, Lionel Levine and Karola Mészáros with a previous bijective proof by Matthew Watson. Our work sheds new light on the Ethiopian dinner game.

Extending higher Bruhat orders to non-longest words in $S_n$
In this paper, we extend Manin and Schechtman's higher Bruhat orders for the symmetric group to higher Bruhat orders for non-longest words $w$ in $S_n$. We prove that the higher Bruhat orders of non-longest words are ranked posets with unique minimal and maximal elements. As in Manin and Schechtman's original paper, the $k$-th Bruhat order for $w$ is created out of equivalence classes of maximal chains in its $(k-1)$-st Bruhat order. We also define the second and third Bruhat orders for arbitrary realizable k-sets, and prove that the second Bruhat order has a unique minimal and maximal element. Lastly, we also outline how this extension may guide future research into developing higher Bruhat orders for affine type A Weyl groups.

Weak Bruhat interval modules of the 0-Hecke algebra
Published in Mathematische Zeitschrift (2022) • View Publication • BIB
The purpose of this paper is to provide a unified method for dealing with various 0-Hecke modules constructed using tableaux so far. To do this, we assign a $0$-Hecke module to each left weak Bruhat interval, called a weak Bruhat interval module. We prove that every indecomposable summand of the $0$-Hecke modules categorifying dual immaculate quasisymmetric functions, extended Schur functions, quasisymmetric Schur functions, and Young row-strict quasisymmetric Schur functions is a weak Bruhat interval module. We further study embedding into the regular representation, induction product, restriction, and (anti-)involution twists of weak Bruhat interval modules.

Matrix coefficients of intertwining operators and the Bruhat order
Let $(π_{\mathbf{z}},V_{\mathbf{z}})$ be an unramified principal series representation of a reductive group over a nonarchimedean local field, parametrized by an element $\mathbf{z}$ of the maximal torus in the Langlands dual group. If $v$ is an element of the Weyl group $W$, then the standard intertwining integral $\mathcal{A}_v$ maps $V_{\mathbf{z}}$ to $V_{v\mathbf{z}}$. Letting $ψ^{\mathbf{z}}_w$ with $w\in W$ be a suitable basis of the Iwahori fixed vectors in $V_{\mathbf{z}}$, and $\widehatψ^{\mathbf{z}}_w$ a basis of the contragredient representation, we define $σ(u,v,w)$ (for $u,v,w\in W$) to be $\langle \mathcal{A}_vψ_u^{\mathbf{z}},\widehatψ^{v\mathbf{z}}_w\rangle$. This is an interesting function and we initiate its study. We show that given $u$ and $w$, there is a minimal $v$ such that $σ(u,v,w)\neq 0$. Denoting this $v$ as $v_\hbox{min}=v_\hbox{min}(u,w)$, we will prove that $σ(u,v_\hbox{min},w)$ is a polynomial of the cardinality $q$ of the residue field. Indeed if $v>v_\hbox{min}$, then $σ(u,v,w)$ is a rational function of $\mathbf{z}$ and $q$, whose denominator we describe. But if $v=v_\hbox{min}$, the dependence on $\mathbf{z}$ disappears. We will express $σ(u,v_\hbox{min},w)$ as the Poincaré polynomial of a Bruhat interval. The proof leads to fairly intricate considerations of the Bruhat order. Thus our results require us to prove some facts that may be of independent interest, relating the Bruhat order $\leqslant$ and the weak Bruhat order $\leqslant_R$. For example we will prove (for finite Coxeter groups) the following "mixed meet" property. If $u, w$ are elements of $W$, then there exists a unique element $m \in W$ that is maximal with respect to the condition that $m \leqslant_R u$ and $m \leqslant w$. Thus if $z \leqslant_R u$ and $z \leqslant w$, then $x \leqslant m$. The value $v_\hbox{min}$ is $m^{-1}u$.

Euler obstructions for the Lagrangian Grassmannian
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove a case of a positivity conjecture of Mihalcea-Singh, concerned with the local Euler obstructions associated to the Schubert stratification of the Lagrangian Grassmannian LG(n,2n). Combined with work of Aluffi-Mihalcea-Schürmann-Su, this further implies the positivity of the Mather classes for Schubert varieties in LG(n,2n), which Mihalcea-Singh had verified for the other cominuscule spaces of classical Lie type. Building on the work of Boe and Fu, we give a positive recursion for the local Euler obstructions, and use it to show that they provide a positive count of admissible labelings of certain trees, analogous to the ones describing Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials. Unlike in the case of the Grassmannians in types A and D, for LG(n,2n) the Euler obstructions e_{y,w} may vanish for certain pairs (y,w) with y <= w in the Bruhat order. Our combinatorial description allows us to classify all the pairs (y,w) for which e_{y,w}=0. Restricting to the big opposite cell in LG(n,2n), which is naturally identified with the space of n x n symmetric matrices, we recover the formulas for the local Euler obstructions associated with the matrix rank stratification.

Tableau models for semi-infinite Bruhat order and level-zero representations of quantum affine algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that semi-infinite Bruhat order on an affine Weyl group is completely determined from those on the quotients by affine Weyl subgroups associated with various maximal (standard) parabolic subgroups of finite type. Furthermore, for an affine Weyl group of classical type, we give a complete classification of all cover relations of semi-infinite Bruhat order (or equivalently, all edges of the quantum Bruhat graphs) on the quotients in terms of tableaux. Combining these we obtain a tableau criterion for semi-infinite Bruhat order on an affine Weyl group of classical type. As an application, we give new tableau models for the crystal bases of a level-zero fundamental representation and a level-zero extremal weight module over a quantum affine algebra of classical untwisted type, which we call quantum Kashiwara-Nakashima columns and semi-infinite Kashiwara-Nakashima tableaux. We give an explicit description of the crystal isomorphisms among three different realizations of the crystal basis of a level-zero fundamental representation by quantum Lakshmibai-Seshadri paths, quantum Kashiwara-Nakashima columns, and (ordinary) Kashiwara-Nakashima columns.

The B-orbits on a Hermitian symmetric variety in characteristic 2
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a reductive linear algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $\mathbb{K}$ of characteristic $2$. Fix a parabolic subgroup $P$ such that the corresponding parabolic subgroup over $\mathbb{C}$ has abelian unipotent radical and fix a Levi subgroup $L\subseteq P$. We parametrize the orbits of a Borel $B\subseteq P$ over the Hermitian symmetric variety $G/L$ supposing the root system $Φ$ is irreducible. For $Φ$ simply laced we prove a combinatorial characterization of the Bruhat order over these orbits. We also prove a formula to compute the dimension of the orbits from combinatorial characteristics of their representatives.

Bruhat intervals, subword complexes and brick polyhedra for finite Coxeter groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the interplay between the discrete geometry of Bruhat poset intervals and subword complexes of finite Coxeter systems. We establish connections between the cones generated by cover labels for Bruhat intervals and of root configurations for subword complexes, culminating in the notion of brick polyhedra for general subword complexes.

Ricci curvature of Bruhat orders
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the Ricci curvature of the Hasse diagrams of the Bruhat order of finite irreducible Coxeter groups. For this purpose we compute the maximum degree of these graphs for types $B_n$ and $D_n$. The proof uses a new graph $Γ(π)$ defined for any element $π$ in the corresponding group.
Flips in symmetric separated set-systems
For a positive integer $n$, a collection $S$ of subsets of $[n]=\{1,\ldots,n\}$ is called symmetric if $X\in S$ implies $X^\ast\in S$, where $X^\ast:=\{i\in [n]\colon n-i+1\notin X\}$ (the involution $\ast$ was introduced by Karpman). Leclerc and Zelevinsky showed that the set of maximal strongly (resp. weakly) separated collections in $2^{[n]}$ is connected via flips, or mutations, ``in the presence of six (resp. four) witnesses''. We give a symmetric analog of those results, by showing that each maximal symmetric strongly (weakly) separated collection in $2^{[n]}$ can be obtained from any other one by a series of special symmetric local transformations, so-called symmetric flips. Also we establish the connectedness via symmetric flips for the class of maximal symmetric $r$-separated collections in $2^{[n]}$ when $n,r$ are even (where sets $A,B\subseteq [n]$ are called $r$-separated if there are no elements $i_0<i_1< \cdots <i_{r+1}$ in $[n]$ which alternate in $A\setminus B$ and $B\setminus A$). This is related to a symmetric version of higher Bruhat orders. These results are obtained as consequences of our study of related geometric objects: symmetric rhombus and combined tilings and symmetric cubillages.

Sign-restricted matrices of $0$'s, $1$'s, and $-1$'s
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study {\em sign-restricted matrices} (SRMs), a class of rectangular $(0, \pm 1)$-matrices generalizing the alternating sign matrices (ASMs). In an SRM each partial column sum, starting from row 1, equals 0 or 1, and each partial row sum, starting from column 1, is nonnegative. We determine the maximum number of nonzeros in SRMs and characterize the possible row and column sum vectors. Moreover, a number of results on interchange operations are shown, both for SRMs and, more generally, for $(0, \pm 1)$-matrices. The Bruhat order on ASMs can be extended to SRMs with the result a distributive lattice. Also, we study polytopes associated with SRMs and some relates decompositions.
