Revisiting $q$-Derangement Numbers via Decorated Permutations
This note aims to provide a direct combinatorial proof of the Gessel--Reutenauer--Wachs formula for $q$-derangement numbers in the setting of decorated permutations, without using the $q$-binomial inversion formula. Decorated permutations, introduced by Postnikov in his study of the totally nonnegative Grassmannian, provide a natural framework for Chen's signed fixed-point model. Our proof is based on a major-index generating function for decorated permutations with a fixed number of signed fixed points, together with a sign-reversing and descent-set-preserving involution, thereby answering a question raised by Chen. This involution was discovered through human--AI collaboration.

Flag positroid pipe dreams
We introduce flag positroid pipe dreams (FPPs), whose role in the study of complete flag positroids is analogous to the role of Le-diagrams in the study of positroids. We develop the combinatorics of these diagrams and highlight some of their properties. FPPs are in bijection with intervals in the Bruhat order of the symmetric group, and the number of elbows in an FPP is the dimension of the corresponding Richardson cell in the decomposition of the nonnegative flag variety. We show how complete flag positroids can be built rank by rank via FPPs, and how the Le-diagrams of the positroid constituents of the flag can be obtained from the FPP via a simple standardization operation. Using partial FPPs, we give an alternative proof of a conjecture of Benedetti, Chavez, and Tamayo on the problem of characterizing elementary positroid quotients via cyclic shifts of decorated permutations, in the nonnegatively representable case. Our proof partially addresses a problem of Chen et al. regarding an explicit characterization of the cyclic shift operators purely in terms of decorated permutations. We show that the poset of nonnegatively representable elementary positroid quotients is self-dual. The maximal chains of this poset are in bijection with FPPs.

Sparse Paving Positroids

Using Postnikov's Le-diagrams, decorated permutations, and Grassmann necklaces, we classify which positroids are sparse paving matroids. This allows us to enumerate sparse paving positroids, making connections to a known sequence involving the golden ratio and to the Lucas numbers.

Chow rings and augmented Chow rings of uniform matroids and their $q$-analogs
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices, Volume 2025, Issue 13, July 2025, rnaf198 • View Publication • BIB
We study the Hilbert series and the representations of $\mathfrak{S}_n$ and $GL_n(\mathbb{F}_q)$ on the (augmented) Chow rings of uniform matroids $U_{r,n}$ and $q$-uniform matroids $U_{r,n}(q)$. The Frobenius series for uniform matroids and their $q$-analogs are computed. As a byproduct, we recover Hameister, Rao, and Simpson's formula for the Hilbert series of Chow rings of $q$-uniform matroids in terms of permutations and further obtain their augmented counterpart in terms of decorated permutations. We also show that the equivariant Charney--Davis quantity of the (augmented) Chow ring of a matroid is nonnegative (i.e., a genuine representation of a group of automorphisms of the matroid). When the matroid is a uniform matroid and the group is $\mathfrak{S}_n$, the representation either vanishes or is a Foulkes representation (i.e., a Specht module of a ribbon shape). Specializing to the usual Charney--Davis quantities, we obtain an elegant combinatorial interpretation of Hameister, Rao, and Simpson's formula for Chow rings of $q$-uniform matroids and its augmented counterpart.

Boundary Algebras of Positroids
A dimer model is a quiver with faces embedded into a disk. A consistent dimer model gives rise to a strand diagram, and hence to a positroid. The Gorenstein-projective module category over the completed boundary algebra of a dimer model was shown by Pressland to categorify a cluster structure on the corresponding positroid variety. Outside of the Grassmannian case, boundary algebras of dimer models are not well understood. We give an explicit description of the boundary algebra of a consistent dimer model as a quiver with relations calculated only from the data of the decorated permutation or, equivalently, Grassmann necklace of its positroid.
Characterizing positroid quotients of uniform matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study two-step flag positroids $(P_1, P_2)$, where $P_1$ is a quotient of $P_{2}$. We provide a complete characterization of all two-step flag positroids that contain a uniform matroid, extending and completing a partial result by Benedetti, Chávez, and Jiménez. To contrast general positroids with the special case of lattice path matroids, we show that the containment relations of Grassmann necklaces and conecklaces fully characterize flag lattice path matroids, but are insufficient for general flag positroids. Additionally, we prove that the decorated permutations of any elementary quotient pair are related by a cyclic shift, resolving a conjecture of Benedetti, Chávez and Jiménez.

Reconstructing a bijection on the level of Le diagrams
Lukowiski, Parisi, and Williams formulated the T-duality map of string theory at a purely combinatorial level as a map on decorated permutations. We combinatorially describe this map at the level of Le diagrams. This perspective makes the dimension shift under the map more transparent.

Criteria for smoothness of Positroid varieties via pattern avoidance, Johnson graphs, and spirographs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Positroids are certain representable matroids originally studied by Postnikov in connection with the totally nonnegative Grassmannian and now used widely in algebraic combinatorics. The positroids give rise to determinantal equations defining positroid varieties as subvarieties of the Grassmannian variety. Rietsch, Knutson-Lam-Speyer, and Pawlowski studied geometric and cohomological properties of these varieties. In this paper, we continue the study of the geometric properties of positroid varieties by establishing several equivalent conditions characterizing smooth positroid varieties using a variation of pattern avoidance defined on decorated permutations, which are in bijection with positroids. This allows us to give two formulas for counting the number of smooth positroids along with two $q$-analogs. Furthermore, we give a combinatorial method for determining the dimension of the tangent space of a positroid variety at key points using an induced subgraph of the Johnson graph. We also give a Bruhat interval characterization of positroids.

Combinatorial proofs of multivariate Cayley--Hamilton theorems
Published in Linear Algebra and its Applications Volume 661, (2023), Pages 247--269 • View Publication • BIB
We give combinatorial proofs of two multivariate Cayley--Hamilton type theorems. The first one is due to Phillips (Amer. J. Math., 1919) involving $2k$ matrices, of which $k$ commute pairwise. The second one regards the mixed discriminant, a matrix function which has generated a lot of interest in recent times. Recently, the Cayley--Hamilton theorem for mixed discriminants was proved by Bapat and Roy (Comb. Math. and Comb. Comp., 2017). We prove a Phillips-type generalization of the Bapat--Roy theorem involving $2nk$ matrices, where $n$ is the size of the matrices, among which $nk$ commute pairwise. Our proofs generalize the univariate proof of Straubing (Disc. Math., 1983) for the original Cayley--Hamilton theorem in a nontrivial way, and involve decorated permutations and decorated paths.
Quotients of uniform positroids

Flag matroids are a rich family of Coxeter matroids that can be characterized using pairs of matroids that form a quotient. We consider a class of matroids called positroids, introduced by Postnikov, and utilize their combinatorial representations to explore characterizations of flag positroids. Given a uniform positroid, we give a purely combinatorial characterization of a family of positroids that form quotients with it. We state this in terms of their associated decorated permutations. In proving our characterization we also fully describe the circuits of this family.
The Abelian sandpile model on Ferrers graphs -- A classification of recurrent configurations
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 81 (2019) 221-241 • View Publication • BIB
We classify all recurrent configurations of the Abelian sandpile model (ASM) on Ferrers graphs. The classification is in terms of decorations of EW-tableaux, which undecorated are in bijection with the minimal recurrent configurations. We introduce decorated permutations, extending to decorated EW-tableaux a bijection between such tableaux and permutations, giving a direct bijection between the decorated permutations and all recurrent configurations of the ASM. We also describe a bijection between the decorated permutations and the intransitive trees of Postnikov, the breadth-first search of which corresponds to a canonical toppling of the corresponding configurations.

The rank function of a positroid and non-crossing partitions
Published • View Publication • BIB
A positroid is a special case of a realizable matroid, that arose from the study of totally nonnegative part of the Grassmannian by Postnikov. Postnikov demonstrated that positroids are in bijection with certain interesting classes of combinatorial objects, such as Grassmann necklaces and decorated permutations. The bases of a positroid can be described directly in terms of the Grassmann necklace and decorated permutation. In this paper, we show that the rank of an arbitrary set in a positroid can be computed directly from the associated decorated permutation using non-crossing partitions.

Positroids Induced by Rational Dyck Paths
A rational Dyck path of type $(m,d)$ is an increasing unit-step lattice path from $(0,0)$ to $(m,d) \in \mathbb{Z}^2$ that never goes above the diagonal line $y = (d/m)x$. On the other hand, a positroid of rank $d$ on the ground set $[d+m]$ is a special type of matroid coming from the totally nonnegative Grassmannian. In this paper we describe how to naturally assign a rank $d$ positroid on the ground set $[d+m]$, which we name rational Dyck positroid, to each rational Dyck path of type $(m,d)$. We show that such an assignment is one-to-one. There are several families of combinatorial objects in one-to-one correspondence with the set of positroids. Here we characterize some of these families for the positroids we produce, namely Grassmann necklaces, decorated permutations, Le-diagrams, and move-equivalence classes of plabic graphs. Finally, we describe the matroid polytope of a given rational Dyck positroid.

The facets of the matroid polytope and the independent set polytope of a positroid
Published • View Publication • BIB
A positroid is a special case of a realizable matroid that arose from the study of the totally nonnegative part of the Grassmannian by Postnikov. In this paper, we study the facets of its matroid polytope and the independent set polytope. This allows one to describe the bases and independent sets directly from the decorated permutation, bypassing the use of the Grassmann necklace. We also describe a criterion for determining whether a given cyclic interval is a flat or not using the decorated permutation, then show how it applies to checking the concordancy of positroids.

Dyck Paths and Positroids from Unit Interval Orders
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A 154 (2018) 507-532 • View Publication • BIB
It is well known that the number of non-isomorphic unit interval orders on $[n]$ equals the $n$-th Catalan number. Using work of Skandera and Reed and work of Postnikov, we show that each unit interval order on $[n]$ naturally induces a rank $n$ positroid on $[2n]$. We call the positroids produced in this fashion unit interval positroids. We characterize the unit interval positroids by describing their associated decorated permutations, showing that each one must be a $2n$-cycle encoding a Dyck path of length $2n$. We also provide recipes to read the decorated permutation of a unit interval positroid $P$ from both the antiadjacency matrix and the interval representation of the unit interval order inducing $P$. Using our characterization of the decorated permutation, we describe the Le-diagrams corresponding to unit interval positroids. In addition, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for two Grassmann cells parameterized by unit interval positroids to be adjacent inside the Grassmann cell complex. Finally, we propose a potential approach to find the $f$-vector of a unit interval order.

Contraction and restriction of positroids in terms of decorated permutations
A positroid is a matroid defined by Postnikov to study the cells in the non-negative part of the Grassmannian. They are in bijection with decorated permutations. We show a way to explain contraction and restriction of positroids in terms of decorated permutations.

Mirabolic Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence
Published in Selecta Math. (N.S.) 14 (2009), no. 3-4, 727-758 • View Publication • BIB
The set of orbits of $GL(V)$ in $Fl(V)\times Fl(V)\times V$ is finite, and is parametrized by the set of certain decorated permutations in a work of Solomon. We describe a Mirabolic RSK correspondence (bijective) between this set of decorated permutations and the set of triples: a pair of standard Young tableaux, and an extra partition. It gives rise to a partition of the set of orbits into combinatorial cells. We prove that the same partition is given by the type of a general conormal vector to an orbit. We conjecture that the same partition is given by the bimodule Kazhdan-Lusztig cells in the bimodule over the Iwahori-Hecke algebra of $GL(V)$ arising from $Fl(V)\times Fl(V)\times V$. We also give conjectural applications to the classification of unipotent mirabolic character sheaves on $GL(V)\times V$.

Bijections between pattern-avoiding fillings of Young diagrams
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory Series A 117 (2010), 1218--1230 • View Publication • BIB
The pattern-avoiding fillings of Young diagrams we study arose from Postnikov's work on positive Grassman cells. They are called Le-diagrams, and are in bijection with decorated permutations. Other closely-related diagrams are interpreted as acyclic orientations of some bipartite graphs. The definition of the diagrams is the same but the avoided patterns are different. We give here bijections proving that the number of pattern-avoiding filling of a Young diagram is the same, for these two different sets of patterns. The result was obtained by Postnikov via a reccurence relation. This relation was extended by Spiridonov to obtain more general results about other patterns and other polyominoes than Young diagrams, and we show that our bijections also extend to more general polyominoes.

Crossing and alignments of permutations
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce the notion of crossings and nestings of a permutation. We compute the generating function of permutations with a fixed number of weak exceedances, crossings and nestings. We link alignments and permutation patterns to these statistics. We generalize to the case of decorated permutations. Finally we show how this is related to the stationary distribution of the Partially ASymmetric Exclusion Process (PASEP) model.
