In this article, we study a class of closed connected orientable PL $4$-manifolds admitting a semi-simple crystallization and which have an infinite cyclic fundamental group. We show that the manifold in the class admits a handle decomposition in which the number of $2$-handles depends upon its second Betti number and other $h$-handles ($h \leq 4$) are at most $2$. More precisely, our main result is the following. For a closed connected orientable PL $4$-manifold having a semi-simple crystallization with the fundamental group as $\mathbb{Z}$, we have constructed a handle decomposition for $M$ as one of the following types:
$(1)$ one $0$-handle, two $1$-handles, $1+β_2(M)$ $2$-handles, one $3$-handle and one $4$-handle,
$(2)$ one $0$-handle, one $1$-handle, $β_2(M)$ $2$-handles, one $3$-handle and one $4$-handle,
where $β_2(M)$ denotes the second Betti number of manifold $M$ with $\mathbb{Z}$ coefficients.

Generalizing the decomposition of a connected planar graph into a tree and a dual tree, we prove a combinatorial analog of the classic Helmholz-Hodge decomposition of a smooth vector field. Specifically, we show that for every polyhedral complex, $K$, and every dimension, $p$, there is a partition of the set of $p$-cells into a maximal $p$-tree, a maximal $p$-cotree, and a collection of $p$-cells whose cardinality is the $p$-th Betti number of $K$. Given an ordering of the $p$-cells, this tri-partition is unique, and it can be computed by a matrix reduction algorithm that also constructs canonical bases of cycle and boundary groups.
Intersection patterns in spaces with a forbidden homological minor
In this paper we study generalizations of classical results on intersection patterns of set systems in $\mathbb{R}^d$, such as the fractional Helly theorem or the $(p,q)$-theorem, in the setting of arbitrary triangulable spaces with a forbidden homological minor.
Given a simplicial complex $K$ and an integer $b$, we say that a family $\mathcal{F}$ of subcomplexes of some simplicial complex $\mathcal{U}$ is a \emph{$(K,b)$-free cover} if (i) $K$ is a forbidden homological minor of $\mathcal{U}$, and (ii) the $j$th reduced Betti number $\tildeβ_j(\bigcap_{S\in {\mathcal{G}}}S,\mathbb{Z}_2)$ is strictly less than $b$ for all $0\leq j < \dim K$ and all nonempty subfamilies $\mathcal{G}\subseteq \mathcal{F}$.
We show that for every $K$ and $b$, the fractional Helly number of a $(K,b)$-free cover is at most $μ(K)+1$, where $μ(K)$ is the maximum sum of the dimensions of two disjoint faces in~$K$. This implies that the assertion of the $(p,q)$-theorem holds for every $p \ge q > μ(K)$ and every $(K,b)$-free cover $\mathcal{F}$. For $b=1$ and a suitable $K$ this recovers the original $(p,q)$-theorem and its generalization to good covers. Interestingly, our results show that that the range of parameters $(p,q)$ for which the $(p,q)$-theorem holds is independent of $b$.
Our proofs use Ramsey-type arguments combined with the notion of stair convexity of Bukh et al. to construct (forbidden) homological minors in cubical complexes.
On a representation of the automorphism group of a graph in a unimodular group
We investigate a representation of the automorphism group of a connected graph $X$ in the group of unimodular matrices $U_β$ of dimension $β$, where $β$ is the Betti number of graph $X$. We classify the graphs for which the automorphism group does not embed into $U_β$. It follows that if $X$ has no pendant vertices and $X$ is not a simple cycle, then the representation is faithful and $\mathrm{Aut}\,X$ acts faithfully on $H_1(X,\mathbb{Z})$. The latter statement can be viewed as a discrete analogue of a classical Hurwitz's theorem on Riemann surfaces of genera greater than one.
Classifying Nearly Complete Intersection Ideals Generated in Degree Two
Nearly complete intersection ideals were introduced by A. Boocher and J. Seiner (2018) and defines a special class of monomial ideals in a polynomial ring. These ideals were used to give a lower bound of the total sum of betti numbers that appear a minimal free resolution of a monomial ideal. In this note we give a graph theoretic classification of nearly complete intersection ideals generated in degree two. In doing so, we define a novel graph operation (the inversion) that is motivated by the definition of this new class of ideals.

We prove Engström's conjecture that the independence complex of graphs with no induced cycle of length divisible by $3$ is either contractible or homotopy equivalent to a sphere. Our result strengthens a result by Zhang and Wu, verifying a conjecture of Kalai and Meshulam which states that the total Betti number of the independence complex of such a graph is at most $1$. A weaker conjecture was proved earlier by Chudnovsky, Scott, Seymour, and Spirkl, who showed that in such a graph, the number of independent sets of even size minus the number of independent sets of odd size has values $0$, $1$, or $-1$.

We relate the mixed Hodge structure on the cohomology of open positroid varieties (in particular, their Betti numbers over $\mathbb{C}$ and point counts over $\mathbb{F}_q$) to Khovanov--Rozansky homology of associated links. We deduce that the mixed Hodge polynomials of top-dimensional open positroid varieties are given by rational $q,t$-Catalan numbers. Via the curious Lefschetz property of cluster varieties, this implies the $q,t$-symmetry and unimodality properties of rational $q,t$-Catalan numbers. We show that the $q,t$-symmetry phenomenon is a manifestation of Koszul duality for category $\mathcal{O}$, and discuss relations with open Richardson varieties and extension groups of Verma modules.
Persistent Laplacians: properties, algorithms and implications

We present a thorough study of the theoretical properties and devise efficient algorithms for the \emph{persistent Laplacian}, an extension of the standard combinatorial Laplacian to the setting of pairs (or, in more generality, sequences) of simplicial complexes $K \hookrightarrow L$, which was independently introduced by Lieutier et al. and by Wang et al. In particular, in analogy with the non-persistent case, we first prove that the nullity of the $q$-th persistent Laplacian $Δ_q^{K,L}$ equals the $q$-th persistent Betti number of the inclusion $(K \hookrightarrow L)$. We then present an initial algorithm for finding a matrix representation of $Δ_q^{K,L}$, which itself helps interpret the persistent Laplacian. We exhibit a novel relationship between the persistent Laplacian and the notion of Schur complement of a matrix which has several important implications. In the graph case, it both uncovers a link with the notion of effective resistance and leads to a persistent version of the Cheeger inequality. This relationship also yields an additional, very simple algorithm for finding (a matrix representation of) the $q$-th persistent Laplacian which in turn leads to a novel and fundamentally different algorithm for computing the $q$-th persistent Betti number for a pair $(K,L)$ which can be significantly more efficient than standard algorithms. Finally, we study persistent Laplacians for simplicial filtrations and present novel stability results for their eigenvalues. Our work brings methods from spectral graph theory, circuit theory, and persistent homology together with a topological view of the combinatorial Laplacian on simplicial complexes.

Given a graph $G$, the \textit{independence complex} $I(G)$ is the simplicial complex whose faces are the independent sets of $V(G)$. Let $\tilde{b}_i$ denote the $i$-th reduced Betti number of $I(G)$, and let $b(G)$ denote the sum of $\tilde{b}_i(G)$'s. A graph is ternary if it does not contain induced cycles with length divisible by three. G. Kalai and K. Meshulam conjectured that $b(G)\le 1$ whenever $G$ is ternary. We prove this conjecture. This extends a recent results proved by Chudnovsky, Scott, Seymour and Spirkl that for any ternary graph $G$, the number of independent sets with even cardinality and the independent sets with odd cardinality differ by at most 1.

Let $\mathcal{D}$ be a weighted oriented graph and $I(\mathcal{D})$ be its edge ideal. In this paper, we investigate the Betti numbers of $I(\mathcal{D})$ via upper-Koszul simplicial complexes, Betti splittings and the mapping cone construction. In particular, we provide recursive formulas for the Betti numbers of edge ideals of several classes of weighted oriented graphs. We also identify classes of weighted oriented graphs whose edge ideals have a unique extremal Betti number which allows us to compute the regularity and projective dimension for the identified classes. Furthermore, we characterize the structure of a weighted oriented graph $\mathcal{D}$ on $n$ vertices such that $\textrm{pdim } (R/I(\mathcal{D}))=n$ where $R=k[x_1,\ldots, x_n]$.
On the topological Kalai-Meshulam conjecture
Chudnovsky, Scott, Seymour and Spirkl recently proved a conjecture by Kalai and Meshulam stating that the reduced Euler characteristic of the independence complex of a graph without induced cycles of length divisible by three is in {-1,0,1}. Gauthier had earlier proved that assuming no cycles of those lengths, induced or not. Kalai and Meshulam also stated a stronger topological conjecture, that the total betti numbers are in {0,1}. Towards that we prove an even stronger statement in the same setting as Gauthier: The independence complexes are either contractible or homotopy equivalent to spheres. We conjecture that it also holds in the general setting.

Given an elliptic curve $E$ defined over $\mathbb{C}$, let $E^{\times}$ be an open subset of $E$ obtained by removing a point. In this paper, we show that the $i$-th Betti number of the unordered configuration space $\mathrm{Conf}^{n}(E^{\times})$ of $n$ points on $E^{\times}$ appears as a coefficient of an explicit rational function in two variables. We also compute its Hodge numbers as coefficients of another explicit rational function in four variables. Our result is interesting because these rational functions resemble the generating function of the $\mathbb{F}_{q}$-point counts of $\mathrm{Conf}^{n}(E^{\times})$, which can be obtained from the zeta function of $E$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q}$. We show that the mixed Hodge structure of the $i$-th singular cohomology group $H^{i}(\mathrm{Conf}^{n}(E^{\times}))$ with complex coefficients is pure of weight $w(i)$, an explicit integer we provide in this paper. This purity statement implies our main result about the Betti numbers and the Hodge numbers. Our proof uses Totaro's spectral sequence computation that describes the weight filtration of the mixed Hodge structure on $H^{i}(\mathrm{Conf}^{n}(E^{\times}))$.

The resonance arrangement $\mathcal{A}_n$ is the arrangement of hyperplanes which has all non-zero $0/1$-vectors in $\mathbb{R}^n$ as normal vectors. It is the adjoint of the Braid arrangement and is also called the all-subsets arrangement. The first result of this article shows that any rational hyperplane arrangement is the minor of some large enough resonance arrangement.
Its chambers appear as regions of polynomiality in algebraic geometry, as generalized retarded functions in mathematical physics and as maximal unbalanced families that have applications in economics. One way to compute the number of chambers of any real arrangement is through the coefficients of its characteristic polynomial which are called Betti numbers. We show that the Betti numbers of the resonance arrangement are determined by a fixed combination of Stirling numbers of the second kind. Lastly, we develop exact formulas for the first two non-trivial Betti numbers of the resonance arrangement.

When do syzygies depend on the characteristic of the field? Even for well-studied families of examples, very little is known. For a family of random monomial ideals, namely the Stanley--Reisner ideals of random flag complexes, we prove that the Betti numbers asymptotically almost always depend on the characteristic. Using this result, we also develop a heuristic for characteristic dependence of asymptotic syzygies of algebraic varieties.

The aim of this paper is to make a connection between design theory and algebraic geometry/commutative algebra. In particular, given any Steiner System $S(t,n,v)$ we associate two ideals, in a suitable polynomial ring, defining a Steiner configuration of points and its Complement. We focus on the latter, studying its homological invariants, such as Hilbert Function and Betti numbers. We also study symbolic and regular powers associated to the ideal defining a Complement of a Steiner configuration of points, finding its Waldschmidt constant, regularity, bounds on its resurgence and asymptotic resurgence. We also compute the parameters of linear codes associated to any Steiner configuration of points and its Complement.

Let $G$ be the circulant graph $C_n(S)$ with $S \subseteq \{1, 2, \dots, \lfloor \frac{n}{2} \rfloor\}$, and let $I(G)$ denote the edge ideal in the polynomial ring $R=\mathbb{K}[x_0, x_1, \dots, x_{n-1}]$ over a field $\mathbb{K}$. In this paper, we compute the $\mathbb{N}$-graded Betti numbers of the edge ideals of three families of circulant graphs $C_n(1,2,\dots,\widehat{j},\dots,\lfloor \frac{n}{2} \rfloor)$, $C_{lm}(1,2,\dots,\widehat{2l},\dots, \widehat{3l},\dots,\lfloor \frac{lm}{2} \rfloor)$ and $C_{lm}(1,2,\dots,\widehat{l},\dots,\widehat{2l},\dots, \widehat{3l},\dots,\lfloor \frac{lm}{2} \rfloor)$. Other algebraic and combinatorial properties like regularity, projective dimension, induced matching number and when such graphs are well-covered, Cohen-Macaulay, Sequentially Cohen-Macaulay, Buchsbaum and $S_2$ are also discussed.
Balanced squeezed Complexes
Given any order ideal $U$ consisting of color-squarefree monomials involving variables with $d$ colors, we associate to it a balanced $(d-1)$-dimensional simplicial complex $Δ_{\mathrm{bal}}(U)$ that we call a balanced squeezed complex. In fact, these complexes have properties similar to squeezed balls as introduced by Kalai and the more general squeezed complexes, introduced by the authors. We show that any balanced squeezed complex is vertex-decomposable and that its flag $h$-vector can be read off from the underlying order ideal. Moreover, we describe explicitly its Stanley-Reisner ideal $I_{Δ_{\mathrm{bal}}(U)}$. If $U$ is also shifted, we determine the multigraded generic initial ideal of $I_{Δ_{\mathrm{bal}}(U)}$ and establish that the balanced squeezed complex $Δ_{\mathrm{bal}}(U)$ has the same graded Betti numbers as the complex obtained from color-shifting it. We also introduce a class of color-squarefree monomial ideals that may be viewed as a generalization of the classical squarefree stable monomial ideals and show that their graded Betti numbers can be read off from their minimal generators. Moreover, we develop some tools for computing graded Betti numbers.
Rationality of Equivariant Hilbert Series and Asymptotic Properties

An FI- or an OI-module $\mathbf{M}$ over a corresponding noetherian polynomial algebra $\mathbf{P}$ may be thought of as a sequence of compatible modules $\mathbf{M}_n$ over a polynomial ring $\mathbf{P}_n$ whose number of variables depends linearly on $n$. In order to study invariants of the modules $\mathbf{M}_n$ in dependence of $n$, an equivariant Hilbert series is introduced if $\mathbf{M}$ is graded. If $\mathbf{M}$ is also finitely generated, it is shown that this series is a rational function. Moreover, if this function is written in reduced form rather precise information about the irreducible factors of the denominator is obtained. This is key for applications. It follows that the Krull dimension of the modules $\mathbf{M}_n$ grows eventually linearly in $n$, whereas the multiplicity of $\mathbf{M}_n$ grows eventually exponentially in $n$. Moreover, for any fixed degree $j$, the vector space dimensions of the degree $j$ components of $\mathbf{M}_n$ grow eventually polynomially in $n$. As a consequence, any graded Betti number of $\mathbf{M}_n$ in a fixed homological degree and a fixed internal degree grows eventually polynomially in $n$. Furthermore, evidence is obtained to support a conjecture that the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity and the projective dimension of $\mathbf{M}_n$ both grow eventually linearly in $n$. It is also shown that modules $\mathbf{M}$ whose width $n$ components $\mathbf{M}_n$ are eventually Artinian can be characterized by their equivariant Hilbert series. Using regular languages and finite automata, an algorithm for computing equivariant Hilbert series is presented.
Unimodality of the Expectation of Betti Numbers for Bernoulli Random Quota Complexes
We study certain random simplicial complexes, called random quota complexes. A quota complex on $N+1$ weighted vertices is constructed by adding an $n$-simplex if the sum of the weights of the vertices is below a given quota, $q$. In this paper, the weights of the vertices are chosen i.i.d. with a Bernoulli distribution. The main result of this paper is that the expectation of the $m^{\textrm{th}}$ Betti number, i.e., the dimension of the $m^{\textrm{th}}$ homology group, is unimodal in $m$.
On the Homology of Nilpotent k-ary Lie Algebras
We introduce nilpotent k-ary Lie algebras including analogues of Heisenberg Lie algebras and free nilpotent Lie algebras. We study homology of k-ary nilpotent Lie algebras by using a modification of Chevalley-Eilenberg complex. For some classes of nilpotent k-ary Lie algebras and in particular Heisenberg k-ary Lie algebras we give explicit formulas for Betti numbers. Representation stability of free nilpotent k-ary Lie algebras is proven and lower bounds for Betti numbers are described by Schur modules. We also verify that toral rank conjecture holds for the classes we studied. Moreover, for 2-step nilpotent k-ary Lie algebras, we give a refinement of it.
