Polynomial-in-$r$ bounds for forbidden traces of uniform hypergraphs
We give a general principle that converts fixed-uniformity bounds for forbidden traces into bounds with polynomial dependence on the uniformity. More precisely, let $H$ be a fixed set system on $h\ge1$ vertices, and suppose that, for some $α\ge0$, $\operatorname{ex}_j(m,\operatorname{Tr}(H))=O_{H,j}(m^α)$ for every fixed integer $j\ge1$. Then, for every $\varepsilon>0$, there is a constant $C_{H,α,\varepsilon}$ such that \[ \operatorname{ex}_r(m,\operatorname{Tr}(H)) \le C_{H,α,\varepsilon} r^{h-1-α+\varepsilon}m^α\] for all $m\ge r\ge2$. In particular, for trace-$C_4$-free hypergraphs and every $\varepsilon>0$ there is a constant $C_\varepsilon$ such that \[ \operatorname{ex}_r(m,\operatorname{Tr}(C_4)) \le C_\varepsilon r^{3/2+\varepsilon}m^{3/2} \] for all $m\ge r\ge2$. We also construct trace-$C_4$-free $r$-graphs showing that \[ \operatorname{ex}_r(m,\operatorname{Tr}(C_4)) \ge c r^{1/2}m^{3/2} \] for an absolute constant $c>0$, for every fixed $r\ge3$ and all sufficiently large $m$ (depending on $r$).

Hilbert fragments
In earlier work, we proved that the length polyhedron of an interval order has a unique Hilbert basis and that every element of this basis is a binary vector. The supports of these binary vectors form a set system whose intersection graph is a cocomparability graph. This leads naturally to the question of which graphs can arise as intersection graphs of such Hilbert-basis supports. We introduce Hilbert fragments, defined as induced subgraphs of these intersection graphs. Thus Hilbert fragments form a hereditary class of cocomparability graphs recording the intersection patterns among the supports of Hilbert-basis elements of interval-order length polyhedra. We characterize Hilbert fragments by an axiomatically defined vertex-labeling, called a track-labeling, and give applications illustrating how this characterization can reveal an underlying one-dimensional structure even when the Hilbert fragments themselves are not interval graphs.

Degree Power Sums in Extremal Set Systems
For a family $\mathcal F\subseteq\binom{[n]}k$ and $R\in\binom{[n]}r$, let $d_{\mathcal F}(R)=|\{F\in\mathcal F:R\subseteq F\}|$ and $\ell_{r,p}(\mathcal F)=\sum_{R\in\binom{[n]}r}d_{\mathcal F}(R)^p$; write $co_p(\mathcal F)=\ell_{k-1,p}(\mathcal F)$ for the codegree power sum. We introduce a method that uses convexity to extend sharp bounds for degree sums and sums of squared degrees to real powers, while retaining all equality cases. The method bounds $x^p$ by quadratic polynomials or by a continuous function that is linear on each of two intervals. These functions agree with $x^p$ at the degrees of the proposed extremal family, so the argument requires no bounds for sums of higher powers. For families with bounded matching number, we instead use a bound for $\sum_R\max\{d_{\mathcal F}(R)-s,0\}$ together with the degree sum. We give three exact applications. First, a full $t$-star maximizes $co_p$ among $t$-intersecting families for every real $p\geq2$ in the sharp range $n\geq(t+1)(k-t+1)$, with all equality cases determined. This extends the quadratic theorem of Wu and Zhang to real exponents and answers a problem of Zhou and Yuan throughout the sharp Erdős--Ko--Rado range. Second, among intersecting families with $n\geq2k$, a full star maximizes $\ell_{r,p}$ for every $1\leq r\leq k-1$ and real $p\geq2$, again with all equality cases determined. Third, if $ν(\mathcal F)\leq s$ and $n\geq(2s+1)k-s$, then for every real $p\geq1$, $co_p(\mathcal F)$ is uniquely maximized, up to permutation, by all $k$-sets meeting a fixed $s$-set. This removes the integrality restriction on $p$ and replaces previous cubic thresholds or assumptions that $n$ is sufficiently large with an explicit linear range valid for arbitrary $k$.

Thresholds and spread in set systems of bounded VC-dimension
Let $p_c(\mathcal F)$, $q(\mathcal F)$, and $q_f(\mathcal F)$ denote the threshold, expectation threshold, and fractional expectation threshold of a family $\mathcal F$ of nonempty subsets of a finite set, respectively. We prove that there is an absolute constant $C>0$ such that, if $\mathcal F$ has VC dimension at most $d\ge1$, then $p_c(\mathcal F)\le Cq(\mathcal F)\log(d+1)$. More generally, for every $0<\varepsilon\le1/2$, a binomial random set of density $\min\{1,Cq(\mathcal F)\log((d+1)/\varepsilon)\}$ contains a member of $\mathcal F$ with probability at least $1-\varepsilon$. Consequently, $q_f(\mathcal F)\le Cq(\mathcal F)\log(d+1)$, verifying Talagrand's integral--fractional conjecture for families of any fixed VC dimension. We also prove that if a $k$-spread probability measure has support of VC dimension at most $d$, then a binomial random set of density $\min\{1,(C/k)\log((d+1)/\varepsilon)\}$ contains a member of its support with probability at least $1-\varepsilon$. In both random-containment results, the factor \(\log((d+1)/\varepsilon)\) is optimal up to absolute constants. As an application of the spread theorem, we prove that every $n$-uniform family of VC dimension at most $d$ with more than $(C p^{-1}\log((d+1)/\varepsilon))^n$ members contains a $(p,\varepsilon)$-robust sunflower. In particular, every such family with more than $(Cr\log(d+1))^n$ members contains an $r$-sunflower, improving the recent bound $(Crd)^n$ of Ge, Wang, Xu, and Zhao.

Cover-free families on graphs
A family of subsets of a $t$-set is a \emph{$d$-cover-free family} or $d$-CFF if no subset in the family is contained in the union of any $d$ other subsets. Let $t(d, n)$ denote the minimum $t$ for which there exists a $d$-CFF on a $t$-set with $n$ subsets. Since a $1$-CFF is the same as a Sperner family, using Sperner's theorem, we get $t(1, n) \sim \log_{2}(n)$ as $n$ grows. Erdös, Frankl, and Füredi (JCTA, 1982) proved that $3.106\log_{2}(n) < t(2,n) < 5.512\log_{2}(n)$. This paper focuses on generalizing $1$-CFF and $2$-CFF using a graph $G$ where vertices correspond to subsets in the set system. A $G$-Sperner$(t, n)$ is a family of subsets of a $t$-set such that each edge of $G$ specifies a pair of subsets not contained in each other, where as a $G$-CFF$(t, n)$ is a family of subsets of a $t$-set such that it is $G$-Sperner and the union of a pair of subsets corresponding to each edge of $G$ does not contain any other subset in the family. Let $t_s(G)$ and $t(G)$ denote the minimum $t$ for which there exist a $G$-Sperner$(t, n)$ and a $G$-CFF$(t, n)$, respectively. In this way, $t_s(K_n) = t(1, n)$ and $t(K_n) = t(2, n)$. Firstly, we prove $t_s(G) = t(1, χ(G))$ for any simple graph $G$ and provide various upper and lower bounds for $t(G)$. The \emph{trivial bound}, $t(1, n) \leq t(G) \leq t(2, n)$ holds for any simple graph $G$ with no isolated vertex, with the lower bound tight for an infinite family of star graphs and the upper bound tight for complete graphs. We study when these bounds can be improved and give better constructive upper bounds for families of graphs such as stars, paths, cycles, wheels, and windmill graphs. In particular, a construction based on mixed-radix Gray codes yields $\log_{2}(n) \leq t(P_n) \leq t(C_n) \leq 1.893\log_{2}(n) + \mathcal{O}(1)$ where $P_n$ and $C_n$ are paths and cycles with $n$ vertices.

Even-Intersecting Families of Permutations
A family of permutations in $S_n$ is called even-intersecting if every two distinct members agree in an even number of positions. Let $M(n)$ denote the maximum size of such a family. For even $n$, we prove that $$n!!\leq M(n)\leq e^{\frac{n}{2}+o(n)}n!!,$$ improving the bound obtained from a theorem of Cameron, Deza and Frankl (1987) by an exponential factor. This problem may be viewed as a permutation analogue of the classical Eventown problem for set systems. For odd $n$, we give a construction yielding $M(n)\geq n^2/4$. We further extend this construction to obtain $$ M(n)\geq\bigl(n-\sqrt{n-1}\bigr)^2 ,$$ whenever $n=(q+1)^2+1$ and $q$ is an odd prime power. The latter bound asymptotically matches the upper bound $M(n)\leq(n-1)^2+1$ obtained by Cameron, Deza and Frankl.

NOC NOC, who's there? Clustering systems of tree-child and normal networks
Clustering systems provide a natural way to encode structural information contained in phylogenetic networks. In this note, we study the clustering systems of normal and tree-child networks through an overlap-based property of set systems, called not-overlap-covered (NOC). We show that the NOC property is equivalent to inclusion-visibility, a memberwise formulation of the strict-compatibility condition previously used for tree-child clustering systems. We characterize normal networks as precisely the semi-regular networks whose clustering systems satisfy NOC. Consequently, a clustering system is realized by a normal network if and only if it satisfies NOC, or equivalently, if every one of its clusters is inclusion-visible. In this case, the Hasse diagram provides a canonical normal realization. These are exactly the clustering systems realized by tree-child networks. The NOC formulation yields a sharp quadratic upper bound on the number of distinct clusters of tree-child and normal networks and a direct polynomial-time recognition algorithm. Finally, we explore several consequences of the NOC perspective beyond the phylogenetic setting. These include connections to the enumeration of normal networks, an order-theoretic interpretation of inclusion-visibility, structural properties of NOC set systems, and a tractable special case of Minimum Set Cover, which is NP-hard in general.

Vector Balancing via Directional Total Variation
Our main result is a $3\sqrt{2π}$ bound for the Komlós signing problem: every finite family of real vectors of Euclidean norm at most one admits a signed sum of $\ell_\infty$-norm less than this constant, independently of the dimension and the family size. For any $κ\ge0$, if a bounded open convex set supports a probability density with directional total variation at most $κ$ in every unit direction, then its open-set Banaszczyk transform supports another such density with the same $κ$, provided the translation vector $v$ satisfies $κ\|v\|_2\le1/3$. As a consequence, every finite set system in which each element belongs to at most $t$ sets, where $t\ge1$ is an integer, admits a two-coloring whose imbalance in each set is less than $3\sqrt{2πt}$. This gives the square-root dependence predicted by the Beck-Fiala conjecture. The proof was discovered by the Odin Automatic AI Research Agent.
Almost-linear Zarankiewicz bounds in $1$-semi-equational theories
We study multipartite hypergraphs definable in $1$-semi\-equational theories and prove almost-linear Zarankiewicz bounds in every fixed arity $r\geq2$. More precisely, if $T$ is a $1$-semi-equational theory, then, for every formula $\varphi$ and every $t\geq2$, and every $r\geq2$, there is a constant $c$ such that each $K_{t,\ldots,t}$-free $r$-partite hypergraph defined by $\varphi$ on $n$ vertices has $O_{T,\varphi,t,r}(n^{r-1}(1+\log(1+n))^c)$ edges. In the bipartite case, a Boolean combination of $m$ $(k,1)$-semi-equations has $O_{k,t,m}(n(1+\log(1+n))^{(m-1)(k-1)})$ edges whenever it is $K_{t,t}$-free. In particular, a relation defined by one $(k,1)$-semi-equation or its negation has a linear bound. The proofs are based on incidence estimates for $k$-wise laminar indexed set systems.

Hypergraph Universality and Erdos-Posa Failure for Chromatically Rich Odd Cycles
For every fixed $k\ge 3$, every finite nonempty clutter $\mathcal{H}$ can be realized exactly as the family of inclusion-minimal terminal traces of the $k$-bad odd cycles, namely the odd cycles $C$ satisfying $χ(G[V(C)])\ge k+1$. The host graph $G$ may be chosen $2$-connected, with $T=V(\mathcal{H})$ independent, and with $χ(G)=k+1$, $ω(G)=k$, and $|E(G)|\le k|V(G)|$. Given any integer $B\ge 1$, one realization simultaneously preserves the transversal number, the fractional packing number, and every integer $c$-packing number for $1\le c\le B$. Thus chromatic richness on odd-cycle spans has the full packing-covering complexity of arbitrary finite set systems, even in sparse graphs whose chromatic number exceeds their clique number by one. As a consequence, for every $b,N\ge 1$ and every $\varepsilon>0$, there is such a graph with $τ_k(G)=N$, $ν_k^{1/c}(G)=c$ for every $1\le c\le b$, and $ν_k^*(G)<1+\varepsilon$. Hence every finite-congestion and fractional Erdős--Pósa property fails for $k\ge 3$, with an asymptotically optimal fractional obstruction. This contrasts sharply with $k=2$, where the relevant cycles are the ordinary odd cycles: the integral property fails, while Reed's theorem yields every congestion level at least two and the fractional property. We also characterize the shortest $k$-bad odd cycles by a single fixed witness graph.

Ranked spreadness and sample-based testing
In this note, we introduce the notion of ranked spreadness, a strengthening of the usual spread condition in which the elements of each member can be ordered so that their one-coordinate marginals decay geometrically with their rank. This additional structure removes the dependence on the maximum set size in random-containment estimates. We prove width-free hitting and weighted-concentration theorems for ranked-spread set systems, together with an elementary kernel-extraction theorem showing that ranked spreadness arises naturally in arbitrary distributions on small sets. Our main application is to the simulation of nonadaptive property testers by sample-based testers. If a one-sided tester has average query complexity $d$ and rejects every far input with probability at least $δ$, then, for every integer $c>d/δ$, it admits a one-sided sample-based simulation with expected sample complexity $O_{d,δ,|Σ|}\bigl(n^{1-1/c}\bigr)$. More generally, if positive inputs are rejected with probability at most $γ$ and far inputs with probability at least $δ>γ$, the same conclusion holds for every $c>d/(δ-γ)$. In particular, for constant-query nonadaptive testers we obtain an exponent $1-Θ(1/q)$, matching, up to the dependence on the rejection gap, the exponent conjectured by Fischer, Lachish, and Vasudev.

Strong Colouring of the Qualitative Independence Hypergraph $3\text{-}QI(11,2)$
We determine the strong independence number of the qualitative independence hypergraph, $3\text{-}QI(11, 2)$, using a technique that involves considering its vertices as subsets of $\{1,2, \ldots, 11\}$ and assessing them as intersecting set systems. This gives the maximum size of colour classes in any strong colouring and thus, a lower bound on the strong chromatic number of $3\text{-}QI(11,2)$. We leverage this bound along with an upper bound of the strong chromatic number of $3\text{-}QI(10,2)$, to consequently, establish that the covering array number of $3\text{-}QI(11, 2)$, $CAN(3\text{-}QI(11,2),2) = 11$ and give a sufficient condition for a hypergraph $H$ to have $CAN(H, 2)=11$.
Venn diagrams as forbidden hypergraph traces
We study the maximum size of a set system that contains no $k$-Venn diagram, denoted by $VD_k$, as a trace. For every fixed $k\ge 3$, we prove $\text{ex}_{tr}(n,VD_k)=O_k(n^{2^k-2k+1})$, improving the direct Sauer-Shelah bound $O_k(n^{2^k-1})$. In particular, for $k=4$ the exponent decreases from $15$ to $9$. The proof starts from the theorem of Keevash, Leader, Long and Wagner for $VD_3$ and uses induction on $k$ in which two new Venn regions are forced for free at each added edge. We also record lower-bound constructions for Venn diagrams in fixed uniformity, explicit bounds for the $4$-uniform $3$-Venn problem, and a fixed uniformity trace result for the loose triangle.
Optimal chain density, entropy, and space-time tradeoffs for the TSP
We nearly settle a natural extremal question about set systems over $[n]$: the tradeoff between the {size} (number of sets) and the number of {full chains}. This question was initially raised by Johnson, Leader, and Russell [Combin.~Probab.~Comp., 2015] as a counterpart to Sperner-type results in combinatorics. Recently, a framework introduced by Ameli, Nederlof, and Wang, and independently by Dallant and Kozma [FOCS 2026] linked this question to the space- and time-complexity of Bellman-Held-Karp-style dynamic programming algorithms for permutation problems such as the traveling salesman (TSP). Precisely, they showed that a space-time product $γ^{n+o(n)}$ is feasible for the TSP, whenever a set system of (normalized) size $S$ and chain density $D$ exists, with $ γ= S^2/D$. In this paper we show an essentially {optimal} bound of $γ\approx 3.1819$ for this quantity, closing the gap between the previous best lower and upper bounds of $γ\geq 3.015$ and $ γ\leq 3.572$ respectively. This implies a TSP algorithm with space-time product $O(3.1819^n)$ for input size $n$, as well as a limit to further improvements in this broad framework. More generally, we can obtain close to optimal values $D$ for any feasible value $S$, effectively settling the question of the number of full chains at every size. The crucial step towards our results is casting the extremal combinatorics question as an {information~vs.~entropy} tradeoff involving two random variables. This reformulation {exactly} captures the optimal tradeoff for the combinatorial problem, leading to a framework in which primal-dual certificates can be derived, proving rigorous upper and lower bounds on $γ$. We also give a further application of our techniques, improving a bound of Duffus, Sands, and Winkler on the minimum size of fibres in the Boolean lattice.

A Colorful Extension of VC-dimension and Geometric Applications
The VC-dimension is a fundamental measure of the complexity of a set system. In this paper, we introduce and study a colorful variant of VC-dimension that captures the behavior of set systems on colored ground sets. By studying this new notion, we obtain a variety of geometric results. First, we prove that separable abstract convexity spaces with Radon number $D$ admit a Tverberg theorem with Tverberg number $O(D^2 r \log r)$. This bound significantly improves the $O(Dr^2\log r)$ bound of Alon and Smorodinsky from SODA'26 and is the first quasi-linear bound in $r$, in which the dependence on $D$ is not super-exponential. Second, we prove the first colorful $k$-wise Tverberg theorem for separable abstract convexity spaces. Using this theorem, we obtain a colorful selection lemma with $O(D^3)$ colors, an uncolored selection lemma for subsets of size $O(D^3)$, a weak $\varepsilon$-net theorem with nets of size $O_D(\varepsilon^{-O(D^3)})$, and a $(p,q)$-theorem with exponent of $\mathrm{poly}(D)$. All these quantitative bounds are significantly better than the best previously known general bounds for abstract convexity spaces. Finally, we extend our method to obtain a colorful Tverberg theorem for unions of convex sets, generalizing the uncolored theorem of Alon and Smorodinsky (SODA'26).

Recursive Lifting Beyond the Ahlswede--Khachatrian Construction
For the Erdős--Frankl--Pach problem on uniform set systems of bounded VC-dimension, the Ahlswede--Khachatrian/Mubayi--Zhao construction has long served as the standard lower-bound benchmark. We develop a recursive lifting method that goes beyond this benchmark in every dimension \(d\ge3\), proving that for every \(d\ge3\) and \(n\ge d+3\), \[ M_d(n)\ge \binom{n-1}{d}+\binom{n-4}{d-2}+M_{d-3}(n-5). \] The proof is elementary and proceeds through explicit trace obstructions. We also record a further recursive improvement in the concluding remarks.

A disproof of the uniform witness conjecture
The study of $(d+1)$-uniform set systems with VC-dimension at most $d$ links the Erdős--Ko--Rado theorem with VC-dimension. But already in 1997, Ahlswede and Khachatrian showed that this is not the right extension of the Erdős--Ko--Rado theorem. In 2025, Chao, Xu, Yip and Zhang proposed the uniform witness conjecture as a possible right extension: for $0\le s\le d$, if every set of a $(d+1)$-uniform family has a missing trace of the same fixed size $s$, then the family should have size at most $\binom{n-1}{d}$. They proved the conjecture when $s=d$, and when $s=1$ and $n$ is large. Very recently, Chao, Xu and Zakharov proved the conjecture when $s\le \frac{d}{2}$ and $n$ is large. We fill in the missing half of the picture, although the picture is not the one suggested by the conjecture. More precisely, for $d\ge 4$ and $\left\lceil \frac{d+2}{2}\right\rceil\le s\le d-1$, we construct such a family $\mathcal{F}\subseteq\binom{[n]}{d+1}$ with $|\mathcal{F}|=\binom{n-1}{d}+\binom{n-2(d+1-s)-2}{2s-d-2}$ for every $n\ge2(d+1)$, thereby disproving the uniform witness conjecture.

Partial-twuality polynomial interpolation for binary delta-matroids
Gross, Mansour and Tucker introduced the partial-twuality polynomials for ribbon graphs and investigated the interpolation property of these polynomials. The ribbon group generated by $δ$ and $τ$ acts on set systems as twist $\ast$ and loop complementation $\times$, yielding five nontrivial twuality operators: $ \{\ast,\times,\ast\times ,\times\ast ,\ast\times\ast \}.$ Yan and Jin extended partial-twuality polynomials to set systems, yielding partial-$\bullet$ polynomials with $\bullet\in\{\ast,\times,\ast\times ,\times\ast ,\ast\times\ast\}.$ For partial-$\ast$ polynomials, Zhao and Yan proved that this polynomial is either even, odd, or both even-interpolating and odd-interpolating for every binary delta-matroid. In this paper, we extend this interpolation property to all the remaining nontrivial partial-twualities of binary delta-matroids. Consequently, for every binary delta-matroid and every $\bullet\in\{\ast,\times,\ast \times ,\times\ast ,\ast \times \ast \}$, the partial-$\bullet$ polynomial is either even, odd, or both even-interpolating and odd-interpolating. We also provide examples to show that the binary assumption is essential.

Recursive lower bounds for uniform set systems of bounded VC-dimension
For integers $n\ge d+1$, let $\mathsf{M}_d(n)$ denote the maximum size of a $(d+1)$-uniform family on an $n$-element ground set with VC-dimension at most $d$. For $n\ge2d+2$, the classical construction of Ahlswede and Khachatrian, later generalized by Mubayi and Zhao, gives \[ \mathsf{M}_d(n)\ge \binom{n-1}{d}+\binom{n-4}{d-2}. \] We introduce a two-cover lifting construction and prove the recursive lower bound \[ \mathsf{M}_d(n)\ge \binom{n-1}{d}+\binom{n-4}{d-2}+\mathsf{M}_{d-3}(n-5) \] for every $d\ge 3$ and $n\ge d+3$. Consequently, \[ \mathsf{M}_d(n)\ge \binom{n-1}{d}+\binom{n-4}{d-2}+\binom{n-6}{d-3}. \] Thus the Mubayi--Zhao conjecture on the exact value of $\mathsf{M}_d(n)$ for $n\ge2(d+2)$ is false for any $d\ge 3$. The proof is elementary and proceeds entirely through an explicit analysis of traces.

Structure of $t$-Intersecting Families of Vector Spaces
We study $t$-intersecting and $t$-cross-intersecting families of $k$-dimensional subspaces in finite vector spaces of dimension $n$. We show that all large $t$-intersecting families admit a governing low-dimensional structure for $n \ge 2k+1$. This result, together with its cross-intersecting variant, allows us to prove analogues of several classical extremal set-theoretic results. In particular, we determine the intersecting families with the largest diversity, and we establish a Frankl-type degree-diversity result that generalizes the Hilton-Milner theorem. Our proofs rely on simplification procedures for $t$-intersecting and $t$-cross-intersecting families of subspaces. These procedures are based on the concept of subspace spreadness, a generalization of the classical notion of spreadness for set systems.
