We apply a construction developed in a previous paper by the authors in order to obtain a formula which enables us to compute $\ell^2$-Betti numbers coming from a family of group algebras representable as crossed product algebras. As an application, we obtain a whole family of irrational $\ell^2$-Betti numbers arising from the lamplighter group algebra $K[\mathbb{Z}_2 \wr \mathbb{Z}]$, being $K$ a subfield of the complex numbers closed under complex conjugation. This procedure is constructive, in the sense that one has an explicit description of the elements realizing such irrational numbers. This extends the work made by Grabowski, who first computed irrational $\ell^2$-Betti numbers from the algebras $\mathbb{Q}[\mathbb{Z}_n \wr \mathbb{Z}]$, where $n \geq 2$ is a natural number. We also apply the techniques developed to the (generalized) odometer algebra $\mathcal{O}(\overline{n})$, where $\overline{n}$ is a supernatural number. We compute its $*$-regular closure, and this allows us to fully characterize the set of $\ell^2$-Betti numbers arising from $\mathcal{O}(\overline{n})$.

In the first part of this paper, we determine the asymptotic subgroup growth of the fundamental group of a torus knot complement. In the second part, we use this to study random finite degree covers of torus knot complements. We determine their Benjamini-Schramm limit and the linear growth rate of the Betti numbers of these covers. All these results generalise to a larger class of lattices in $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{R})\times \mathbb{R}$. As a by-product of our proofs, we obtain analogous limit theorems for high degree random covers of non-uniform Fuchsian lattices with torsion.
Topology and local geometry of the Eden model

The Eden cell growth model is a simple discrete stochastic process which produces a "blob" in $\mathbb{R}^d$: start with one cube in the regular grid, and at each time step add a neighboring cube uniformly at random. This process has been used as a model for the growth of aggregations, tumors, and bacterial colonies and the healing of wounds, among other natural processes. Here, we study the topology and local geometry of the resulting structure, establishing asymptotic bounds for Betti numbers. Our main result is that the Betti numbers grow at a rate between the conjectured rate of growth of the site perimeter and the actual rate of growth of the site perimeter. We also present the results of computational experiments on finer aspects of the geometry and topology, such as persistent homology and the distribution of shapes of holes.
On algebraic and combinatorial properties of weighted simplicial complexes
Weighted simplicial complexes (WSCs) are powerful tools for describing weighted cloud data or networks with weighted nodes. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to study WSCs via the concept of polarization. Polarization of a WSC allows one to construct a new (unweighted) simplicial complex which coincides with an object called the mixed wreath product. This new construction preserves several properties and invariants of the underlying simplicial complex of a WSC. Our main focus is to analyze WSCs through their underlying simplicial complexes and mixed wreath products. Combinatorially, we investigate properties such as vertex-decomposability, shellability, constructibility; algebraically, we study Betti numbers, associated primes and primary decompositions of ideals associated to WSCs.

In this paper, we give a lower bound for the maximum and minimum genus of a multibranched surface by the first Betti number and the minimum and maximum genus of the boundary of the neighborhood of it, respectively. As its application, we show that the maximum and minimum genus of $G\times S^1$ is equal to twice of the maximum and minimum genus of $G$ for a graph $G$, respectively. This provides an interplay between graph theory and 3-manifold theory.

Let $G$ be an (oriented) graph on the vertex set $V = \{ 0, 1,\ldots,n\}$ with root $0$. Postnikov and Shapiro associated a monomial ideal $\mathcal{M}_G$ in the polynomial ring $ R = {\mathbb{K}}[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ over a field $\mathbb{K}$. A subideal $\mathcal{M}_G^{(k)}$ of $\mathcal{M}_G$ generated by subsets of $\widetilde{V}=V\setminus \{0\}$ of size at most $k+1$ is called a $k$-skeleton ideal of the graph $G$. Many interesting homological and combinatorial properties of $1$-skeleton ideal $\mathcal{M}_G^{(1)}$ are obtained by Dochtermann for certain classes of simple graph $G$. A finite sequence $\mathcal{P}=(p_1,\ldots,p_n) \in \mathbb{N}^n$ is called a spherical $G$-parking function if the monomial $\mathbf{x}^{\mathcal{P}} = \prod_{i=1}^{n} x_i^{p_i} \in \mathcal{M}_G \setminus \mathcal{M}_G^{(n-2)}$. Let ${\rm sPF}(G)$ be the set of all spherical $G$-parking functions. In this paper, a combinatorial description for all multigraded Betti numbers of the $k$-skeleton ideal $\mathcal{M}_{K_{n+1}}^{(k)}$ of the complete graph $K_{n+1}$ on $V$ are given. Also, using DFS burning algorithms of Perkinson-Yang-Yu (for simple graph) and Gaydarov-Hopkins (for multigraph), we give a combinatorial interpretation of spherical $G$-parking functions for the graph $G = K_{n+1}- \{e\}$ obtained from the complete graph $K_{n+1}$ on deleting an edge $e$. In particular, we showed that $|{\rm sPF}(K_{n+1}- \{e_0\} )|= (n-1)^{n-1}$ for an edge $e_0$ through the root $0$, but $|{\rm sPF}(K_{n+1} - \{e_1\})| = (n-1)^{n-3}(n-2)^2$ for an edge $e_1$ not through the root.

The Linial-Meshulam complex model is a natural higher-dimensional analog of the Erdős-Rényi graph model. In recent years, Linial and Peled established a limit theorem for Betti numbers of Linial-Meshulam complexes with an appropriate scaling of the underlying parameter. The present paper aims to extend that result to more-general random simplicial complex models. We introduce a class of homogeneous and spatially independent random simplicial complexes, including the Linial-Meshulam complex model and the random clique complex model as special cases, and we study the asymptotic behavior of their Betti numbers. Moreover, we obtain the convergence of the empirical spectral distributions of their Laplacians. A key element in the argument is the local weak convergence of simplicial complexes. Inspired by the work of Linial and Peled, we establish the local weak limit theorem for homogeneous and spatially independent random simplicial complexes.

We generalize a formula due to Macdonald that relates the singular Betti numbers of $X^{n}/G$ to those of $X$, where $X$ is a compact manifold and $G$ is any subgroup of the symmetric group $S_{n}$ acting on $X^{n}$ by permuting coordinates. Our result is completely axiomatic: in a general setting, given an endomorphism on the cohomology $H^{\bullet}(X)$, it explains how we can explicitly relate the Lefschetz series of the induced endomorphism on $H^{\bullet}(X^{n})^{G}$ to that of the given endomorphism on $H^{\bullet}(X)$ in the presence of the Künneth formula with respect to a cup product. For example, when $X$ is a compact manifold, we take the Lefschetz series given by the singular cohomology with rational coefficients. On the other hand, when $X$ is a projective variety over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q}$, we use the $l$-adic étale cohomology with a suitable choice of prime number $l$. We also explain how our formula generalizes the Pólya enumeration theorem, a classical theorem in combinatorics that counts colorings of a graph up to given symmetries, where $X$ is taken to be a finite set of colors. When $X$ is a smooth projective variety over $\mathbb{C}$, our formula also generalizes a result of Cheah that relates the Hodge numbers of $X^{n}/G$ to those of $X$. We will also see that our result generalizes the following facts: 1. the generating function of the Poincaré polynomials of symmetric powers of a compact manifold $X$ is rational; 2. the generating function of the Hodge-Deligne polynomials of symmetric powers of a smooth projective variety $X$ over $\mathbb{C}$ is rational; 3. the zeta series of a projective variety $X$ over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ is rational. We also prove analogous rationality results when we replace $S_{n}$ with $A_{n}$, alternating groups.

Let a compact torus $T=T^{n-1}$ act on an orientable smooth compact manifold $X=X^{2n}$ effectively, with nonempty finite set of fixed points, and suppose that stabilizers of all points are connected. If $H^{odd}(X)=0$ and the weights of tangent representation at each fixed point are in general position, we prove that the orbit space $Q=X/T$ is a homology $(n+1)$-sphere. If, in addition, $π_1(X)=0$, then $Q$ is homeomorphic to $S^{n+1}$. We introduce the notion of $j$-generality of tangent weights of torus action. For any action of $T^k$ on $X^{2n}$ with isolated fixed points and $H^{odd}(X)=0$, we prove that $j$-generality of weights implies $(j+1)$-acyclicity of the orbit space $Q$. This statement generalizes several known results for actions of complexity zero and one. In complexity one, we give a criterion of equivariant formality in terms of the orbit space. In this case, we give a formula expressing Betti numbers of a manifold in terms of certain combinatorial structure that sits in the orbit space.
Constant index expectation curvature for graphs or Riemannian manifolds
An integral geometric curvature is defined as the index expectation K(x) = E[i(x)] if a probability measure m is given on vector fields on a Riemannian manifold or on a finite simple graph. Such curvatures are local, satisfy Gauss-Bonnet and are independent of any embedding in an ambient space. While realizing constant Gauss-Bonnet-Chern curvature is not possible in general already for 4-manifolds, we prove that for compact connected manifolds, constant curvature K_m can always be realized with m supported on Morse gradient fields. We give examples of finite simple graphs which do not allow for any constant m-curvature and prove that for one-dimensional connected graphs, there is a convex set of constant curvature configurations with dimension of the first Betti number of the graph. In particular, there is always a unique constant curvature solution for trees.

We use Young tableaux to compute the dimension of $V^r$, the Prym-Brill-Noether locus of a folded chain of loops of any gonality. This tropical result yields a new upper bound on the dimensions of algebraic Prym-Brill-Noether loci. Moreover, we prove that $V^r$ is pure-dimensional and connected in codimension $1$ when $\dim V^r \geq 1$. We then compute the first Betti number of this locus for even gonality when the dimension is exactly $1$, and compute the cardinality when the locus is finite and the edge lengths are generic.

Let $f_1(n), \ldots, f_k(n)$ be polynomial functions of $n$. For fixed $n\in\mathbb{N}$, let $S_n\subseteq \mathbb{N}$ be the numerical semigroup generated by $f_1(n),\ldots,f_k(n)$. As $n$ varies, we show that many invariants of $S_n$ are eventually quasi-polynomial in $n$, such as the Frobenius number, the type, the genus, and the size of the $Δ$-set. The tool we use is expressibility in the logical system of parametric Presburger arithmetic. Generalizing to higher dimensional families of semigroups, we also examine affine semigroups $S_n\subseteq \mathbb{N}^m$ generated be vectors whose coordinates are polynomial functions of $n$, and we prove similar results; for example, the Betti numbers are eventually quasi-polynomial functions of $n$.
A limit theorem for the $1$st Betti number of layer-$1$ subgraphs in random graphs
We initiate the study of local topology of random graphs. The high level goal is to characterize local "motifs" in graphs. In this paper, we consider what we call the layer-$r$ subgraphs for an input graph $G = (V,E)$: Specifically, the layer-$r$ subgraph at vertex $u \in V$, denoted by $G_{u; r}$, is the induced subgraph of $G$ over vertex set $Δ_{u}^{r}:= \left\{v \in V: d_G(u,v) = r \right\}$, where $d_G$ is shortest-path distance in $G$. Viewing a graph as a 1-dimensional simplicial complex, we then aim to study the $1$st Betti number of such subgraphs. Our main result is that the $1$st Betti number of layer-$1$ subgraphs in Erdős--Rényi random graphs $G(n,p)$ satisfies a central limit theorem.

Let $I_1,\dots,I_n$ be ideals generated by linear forms in a polynomial ring over an infinite field and let $J = I_1 \cdots I_n$. We describe a minimal free resolution of $J$ and show that it is supported on a polymatroid obtained from the underlying representable polymatroid by means of the so-called Dilworth truncation. Formulas for the projective dimension and Betti numbers are given in terms of the polymatroid as well as a characterization of the associated primes. Along the way we show that $J$ has linear quotients. In fact, we do this for a large class of ideals $J_P$, where $P$ is a certain poset ideal associated to the underlying subspace arrangement.

We say that a pure simplicial complex ${\mathbf K}$ of dimension $d$ satisfies the removal-collapsibility condition if ${\mathbf K}$ is either empty or ${\mathbf K}$ becomes collapsible after removing $\tilde β_d ({\mathbf K}; {\mathbb Z}_2)$ facets, where $\tilde β_d ({\mathbf K}; {\mathbb Z}_2)$ denotes the $d$th reduced Betti number.
In this paper, we show that if the link of each face of a pure simplicial complex ${\mathbf K}$ (including the link of the empty face which is the whole ${\mathbf K}$) satisfy the removal-collapsibility condition, then the second barycentric subdivision of ${\mathbf K}$ is vertex decomposable and in particular shellable. This is a higher dimensional generalization of a result of Hachimori, who proved that that if the link of each vertex of a pure 2-dimensional simplicial complex ${\mathbf K}$ is connected, and ${\mathbf K}$ becomes simplicially collapsible after removing $\tildeχ({\mathbf K})$ facets, where $\tilde χ({\mathbf K})$ denotes the reduced Euler characteristic, then the second barycentric subdivision of ${\mathbf K}$ is shellable.
For the proof, we introduce a new variant of decomposability of a simplicial complex, stronger than vertex decomposability, which we call star decomposability. This notion may be of independent interest.

Let $I \subseteq R = \mathbb{K}[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ be a toric ideal, i.e., a binomial prime ideal. We investigate when the ideal $I$ can be "split" into the sum of two smaller toric ideals. For a general toric ideal $I$, we give a sufficient condition for this splitting in terms of the integer matrix that defines $I$. When $I = I_G$ is the toric ideal of a finite simple graph $G$, we give additional splittings of $I_G$ related to subgraphs of $G$. When there exists a splitting $I = I_1+I_2$ of the toric ideal, we show that in some cases we can describe the (multi-)graded Betti numbers of $I$ in terms of the (multi-)graded Betti numbers of $I_1$ and $I_2$.

We extend several $g$-type theorems for connected, orientable homology manifolds without boundary to manifolds with boundary. As applications of these results we obtain Kühnel-type bounds on the Betti numbers as well as on certain weighted sums of Betti numbers of manifolds with boundary. Our main tool is the completion $\hatΔ$ of a manifold with boundary $Δ$; it is obtained from $Δ$ by coning off the boundary of $Δ$ with a single new vertex. We show that despite the fact that $\hatΔ$ has a singular vertex, its Stanley--Reisner ring shares a few properties with the Stanley--Reisner rings of homology spheres. We close with a discussion of a connection between three lower bound theorems for manifolds, PL-handle decompositions, and surgery.
On parametrized families of numerical semigroups

A numerical semigroup is an additive subsemigroup of the non-negative integers. In this paper, we consider parametrized families of numerical semigroups of the form $P_n = \langle f_1(n), \ldots, f_k(n) \rangle$ for polynomial functions $f_i$. We conjecture that for large $n$, the Betti numbers, Frobenius number, genus, and type of $P_n$ each coincide with a quasipolynomial. This conjecture has already been proven in general for Frobenius numbers, and for the remaining quantities in the special case when $P_n = \langle n, n + r_2, \ldots, n + r_k \rangle$. Our main result is to prove our conjecture in the case where each $f_i$ is linear. In the process, we develop the notion of weighted factorization length, and generalize several known results for standard factorization lengths and delta sets to this weighted setting.

We prove the following results on flag triangulations of 2- and 3-manifolds. In dimension 2, we prove that the vertex-minimal flag triangulations of $\mathbb{R} P^2$ and $\mathbb{S}^1\times \mathbb{S}^1$ have 11 and 12 vertices, respectively. In general, we show that $8+3k$ (resp. $8+4k$) vertices suffice to obtain a flag triangulation of the connected sum of $k$ copies of $\mathbb{R} P^2$ (resp. $\mathbb{S}^1\times \mathbb{S}^1$). In dimension 3, we describe an algorithm based on the Lutz-Nevo theorem which provides supporting computational evidence for the following generalization of the Charney-Davis conjecture: for any flag 3-manifold, $γ_2:=f_1-5f_0+16\geq 16 β_1$, where $f_i$ is the number of $i$-dimensional faces and $β_1$ is the first Betti number over a field. The conjecture is tight in the sense that for any value of $β_1$, there exists a flag 3-manifold for which the equality holds.
