Function classes are collections of Boolean functions on a finite set, which are fundamental objects of study in theoretical computer science. We study algebraic properties of ideals associated to function classes previously defined by the third author. We consider the broad family of intersection-closed function classes, and describe cellular free resolutions of their ideals by order complexes of the associated posets. For function classes arising from matroids, polyhedral cell complexes, and more generally interval Cohen-Macaulay posets, we show that the multigraded Betti numbers are pure, and are given combinatorially by the Möbius functions. We then apply our methods to derive bounds on the VC dimension of some important families of function classes in learning theory.

We exhibit several posets arising from commutative algebra, order theory, tropical convexity as potential face posets of tropical polyhedra, and we clarify their inclusion relations. We focus on monomial tropical polyhedra, and deduce how their geometry reflects properties of monomial ideals. Their vertex-facet lattice is homotopy equivalent to a sphere and encodes the Betti numbers of an associated monomial ideal.

We prove several relations on the $f$-vectors and Betti numbers of flag complexes. For every flag complex $Δ$, we show that there exists a balanced complex with the same $f$-vector as $Δ$, and whose top-dimensional Betti number is at least that of $Δ$, thereby extending a theorem of Frohmader by additionally taking homology into consideration. We obtain upper bounds on the top-dimensional Betti number of $Δ$ in terms of its face numbers. We also give a quantitative refinement of a theorem of Meshulam by establishing lower bounds on the $f$-vector of $Δ$, in terms of the top-dimensional Betti number of $Δ$. This result has a continuous analog: If $Δ$ is a $(d-1)$-dimensional flag complex whose $(d-1)$-th reduced homology group has dimension $a\geq 0$ (over some field), then the $f$-polynomial of $Δ$ satisfies the coefficient-wise inequality $f_Δ(x) \geq (1 + (\sqrt[d]{a}+1)x)^d$.
Configuration spaces of disks in an infinite strip

We study the topology of the configuration spaces $C(n,w)$ of $n$ hard disks of unit diameter in an infinite strip of width $w$. We describe ranges of parameter or "regimes", where homology $H_j [C(n,w)]$ behaves in qualitatively different ways.
We show that if $w \ge j+2$, then the homology $H_j[C(n, w)]$ is isomorphic to the homology of the configuration space of points in the plane, $H_j[C(n, \mathbb{R}^2)]$. The Betti numbers of $C(n, \mathbb{R}^2) $ were computed by Arnold, and so as a corollary of the isomorphism, $β_j[C(n,w)]$ is a polynomial in $n$ of degree $2j$.
On the other hand, we show that if $2 \le w \le j+1$, then $β_j [ C(n,w) ]$ grows exponentially with $n$. Most of our work is in carefully estimating $β_j [ C(n,w) ]$ in this regime.
We also illustrate, for every $n$, the homological "phase portrait" in the $(w,j)$-plane--- the parameter values where homology $H_j [C(n,w)]$ is trivial, nontrivial, and isomorphic with $H_j [C(n, \mathbb{R}^2)]$. Motivated by the notion of phase transitions for hard-spheres systems, we discuss these as the "homological solid, liquid, and gas" regimes.

We prove general topological Radon-type theorems for sets in $\mathbb R^d$ or on a surface. Combined with a recent result of Holmsen and Lee, we also obtain fractional Helly theorem, and consequently the existence of weak $\varepsilon$-nets as well as a $(p,q)$-theorem for those sets.
More precisely, given a family $\mathcal F$ of subsets of $\mathbb R^d$, we will measure the homological complexity of $\mathcal F$ by the supremum of the first $\lceil d/2\rceil$ reduced Betti numbers of $\bigcap \mathcal G$ over all nonempty $\mathcal G \subseteq \mathcal F$. We show that if $\mathcal F$ has homological complexity at most $b$, the Radon number of $\mathcal F$ is bounded in terms of $b$ and $d$. In case that $\mathcal F$ lives on a surface and the number of connected components of $\bigcap \mathcal G$ is at most $b$ for any nonempty $\mathcal G \subseteq \mathcal F$, then the Radon number of $\mathcal F$ is bounded by a function depending only on $b$ and the surface itself.
For surfaces, if we moreover assume the sets in $\mathcal F$ are open, we show that the fractional Helly number of $\mathcal F$ is linear in $b$. The improvement is based on a recent result of the author and Kalai. Specifically, for $b=1$ we get that the fractional Helly number is at most three, which is optimal. This case further leads to solving a conjecture of Holmsen, Kim, and Lee about an existence of a $(p,q)$-theorem for open subsets of a surface.
Some stumbling first steps towards linear homology in a nutshell
In 1985 Bayer and Billera defined a flag vector $f(X)$ for every convex polytope $X$, and proved some fundamental properties. The flag vectors $f(X)$ span a graded ring $\mathcal{R}=\bigoplus_{d\geq0}\mathcal{R}_d$. Here $\mathcal{R}_d$ is the span of the $f(X)$ with $\dim X=d$. It has dimension the Fibonacci number $F_{d+1}$.
This paper introduces and explores the conjecture, that $\mathcal{R}$ has a counting basis $\{e_i\}$. If true then the equation $f(X) = \sum g_i(X)e_i$ conjecturally provides a formula for the Betti numbers $g_i(X)$ of a new homology theory. As the $g_i(X)$ are linear functions of $f(X)$, we call the new theory linear homology.
Further, assuming the conjecture each $g_i$ will have a rank $r\geq0$. The rank zero part of linear homology will be (middle perversity) intersection homology. The higher rank $g_i$ measure successively more complicated singularities. In dimension $d$ we will have $\dim\mathcal{R}_d$ linearly independent Betti numbers.
This paper produces a basis $\{e_i\}$ for $\mathcal{R}$, that is conjecturally a counting basis. Warning: Conjecture withdrawn in version 2.
The contraction category of graphs

We study the category whose objects are graphs of fixed genus and whose morphisms are contractions. We show that the corresponding contravariant module categories are Noetherian and we study two families of modules over these categories. The first takes a graph to a graded piece of the homology of its unordered configuration space and the second takes a graph to an intersection homology group whose dimension is given by a Kazhdan-Lusztig coefficient; in both cases we prove that the module is finitely generated. This allows us to draw conclusions about torsion in the homology groups of graph configuration spaces, and about the growth of Betti numbers of graph configuration spaces and Kazhdan-Lusztig coefficients of graphical matroids. We also explore the relationship between our category and outer space, which is used in the study of outer automorphisms of free groups.
Hamming Polynomial of a Demimatroid

Following Britz, Johnsen, Mayhew and Shiromoto, we consider demi\-ma\-troids as a(nother) natural generalization of matroids. As they have shown, demi\-ma\-troids are the appropriate combinatorial objects for studying Wei's duality. Our results here apport further evidence about the trueness of that observation. We define the Hamming polynomial of a demimatroid $M$, denoted by $W(x,y,t)$, as a generalization of the extended Hamming weight enumerator of a matroid. The polynomial $W(x,y,t)$ is a specialization of the Tutte polynomial of $M$, and actually is equivalent to it. Guided by work of Johnsen, Roksvold and Verdure for matroids, we prove that Betti numbers of a demimatroid and its elongations determine the Hamming polynomial. Our results may be applied to simplicial complexes since in a canonical way they can be viewed as demimatroids. Furthermore, following work of Brylawski and Gordon, we show how demimatroids may be generalized one step further, to combinatroids. A combinatroid, or Brylawski structure, is an integer valued function $ρ$, defined over the power set of a finite ground set, satisfying the only condition $ρ(\emptyset)=0$. Even in this extreme generality, we will show that many concepts and invariants in coding theory can be carried on directly to combinatroids, say, Tutte polynomial, characteristic polynomial, MacWilliams identity, extended Hamming polynomial, and the $r$-th generalized Hamming polynomial; this last one, at least conjecturelly, guided by the work of Jurrius and Pellikaan for linear codes. All this largely extends the notions of deletion, contraction, duality and codes to non-matroidal structures.

We introduce a new class of monomial ideals which we call symmetric shifted ideals. Symmetric shifted ideals are fixed by the natural action of the symmetric group and, within the class of monomial ideals fixed by this action, they can be considered as an analogue of stable monomial ideals within the class of monomial ideals. We show that a symmetric shifted ideal has linear quotients and compute its (equivariant) graded Betti numbers. As an application of this result, we obtain several consequences for graded Betti numbers of symbolic powers of defining ideals of star configurations.
Random Simplicial Complexes in the Medial Regime

We describe topology of random simplicial complexes in the lower and upper models in the medial regime, i.e. under the assumption that the probability parameters $p_σ$ approach neither $0$ nor $1$. We show that nontrivial Betti numbers of typical lower and upper random simplicial complexes in the medial regime lie in a narrow range of dimensions. For instance, an upper random simplicial complex $Y$ on $n$ vertices in the medial regime with high probability has non-vanishing Betti numbers $b_{j}(Y)$ only for $k+c <n-j<k+\log_2 k +c'$ where $k=\log_2 \ln n$ and $c, c' $ are constants. A lower random simplicial complex on $n$ vertices in the medial regime is with high probability $(k+a)$-connected and its dimension $d$ satisfies $d\sim k+\log_2 k+ a'$ where $a, \, a'$ are constants. The paper develops a new technique, based on Alexander duality, which relates the lower and upper models.

The independence complex of a chordal graph is known to be shellable due to a result of Van Tuyl and Villarreal. This is equivalent to the fact that cover ideal of a chordal graph has linear quotients. We use this result to obtain recursive formulas for the Betti numbers of cover ideals of chordal graphs. Also, we give a new proof of their result which yields different shellings of the independence complex.
Betti numbers of unordered configuration spaces of small graphs
The purpose of this document is to provide data about known Betti numbers of unordered configuration spaces of small graphs in order to guide research and avoid duplicated effort. It contains information for connected multigraphs having at most nine edges which contain no loops, no bivalent vertices, and no internal (i.e., non-leaf) bridges.
Geometries in perturbative quantum field theory
In perturbative quantum field theory one encounters certain, very specific geometries over the integers. These perturbative quantum geometries determine the number contents of the amplitude considered. In the article `Modular forms in quantum field theory' F. Brown and the author report on a first list of perturbative quantum geometries using the $c_2$-invariant in $φ^4$ theory. A main tool was denominator reduction which allowed the authors to examine graphs up to loop order (first Betti number) 10. We introduce an improved quadratic denominator reduction which makes it possible to extend the previous results to loop order 11 (and partially orders 12 and 13). For comparison, also non-$φ^4$ graphs are investigated. Here, we extend the results from loop order 9 to 10. The new database of 4801 unique $c_2$-invariants (previously 157) -- while being consistent with all major $c_2$-conjectures -- leads to a more refined picture of perturbative quantum geometries. In the appendix, Friedrich Knop proves a Chevalley-Warning-Ax theorem for double covers of affine space.
Induced matchings in strongly biconvex graphs and some algebraic applications
In this paper, motivated by a question posed in \cite{AH}, we introduce strongly biconvex graphs as a subclass of weakly chordal and bipartite graphs. We give a linear time algorithm to find an induced matching for such graphs and we prove that this algorithm indeed gives a maximum induced matching. Applying this algorithm, we provide a strongly biconvex graph whose (monomial) edge ideal does not admit a unique extremal Betti number. Using this constructed graph, we provide an infinite family of the so-called closed graphs (also known as proper interval graphs) whose binomial edge ideals do not have a unique extremal Betti number. This, in particular, answers the aforementioned question in \cite{AH}.
Functorial invariants of trees and their cones
We study the category whose objects are trees (with or without roots) and whose morphisms are contractions. We show that the corresponding contravariant module categories are Noetherian, and we study two natural families of modules over these categories. The first takes a tree to a graded piece of the homology of its unordered configuration space, or to the homology of the unordered configuration space of its cone. The second takes a tree to a graded piece of the intersection homology of the reciprocal plane of its cone, which is a vector space whose dimension is given by a Kazhdan-Lusztig coefficient. We prove finite generation results for each of these modules, which allow us to obtain results about the growth of Betti numbers of configuration spaces and of Kazhdan-Lusztig coefficients of graphical matroids.

We prove that the mod $2$ Betti numbers of double coverings of a complex hyperplane arrangement complement are combinatorially determined. The proof is based on a relation between the mod $2$ Aomoto complex and the transfer long exact sequence.
Applying the above result to the icosidodecahedral arrangement ($16$ planes in the three dimensional space related to the icosidodecahedron), we conclude that the first homology of the Milnor fiber has non-trivial $2$-torsion.
The minimal cellular resolutions of the edge ideals of forests
We present an explicit construction of a minimal cellular resolution for the edge ideals of forests, based on discrete Morse theory. In particular, the generators of the free modules are subsets of the generators of the modules in the Lyubeznik resolution. This procedure allows to ease the computation of the graded Betti numbers and the projective dimension.
Random Simplicial Complexes, Duality and The Critical Dimension
In this paper we discuss two general models of random simplicial complexes which we call the lower and the upper models. We show that these models are dual to each other with respect to combinatorial Alexander duality. The behaviour of the Betti numbers in the lower model is characterised by the notion of critical dimension, which was introduced by A. Costa and M. Farber: random simplicial complexes in the lower model are homologically approximated by a wedge of spheres of dimension equal the critical dimension. In this paper we study the Betti numbers in the upper model and introduce new notions of critical dimension and spread. We prove that (under certain conditions) an upper random simplicial complex is homologically approximated by a wedge of spheres of the critical dimension.

We prove upper bounds for the graded Betti numbers of Stanley-Reisner rings of balanced simplicial complexes. Along the way we show bounds for Cohen-Macaulay graded rings $S/I$, where $S$ is a polynomial ring and $I\subseteq S$ is an homogeneous ideal containing a certain number of generators in degree 2, including the squares of the variables. Using similar techniques we provide upper bounds for the number of linear syzygies for Stanley-Reisner of balanced normal pseudomanifolds. Moreover, we compute explicitly the graded Betti numbers of cross-polytopal stacked spheres, and show that they only depend on the dimension and the number of vertices, rather than also the combinatorial type.
