Increasing subsequences and the hard-to-soft edge transition in matrix ensembles
Published • View Publication • BIB
Our interest is in the cumulative probabilities Pr(L(t) \le l) for the maximum length of increasing subsequences in Poissonized ensembles of random permutations, random fixed point free involutions and reversed random fixed point free involutions. It is shown that these probabilities are equal to the hard edge gap probability for matrix ensembles with unitary, orthogonal and symplectic symmetry respectively. The gap probabilities can be written as a sum over correlations for certain determinantal point processes. From these expressions a proof can be given that the limiting form of Pr(L(t) \le l) in the three cases is equal to the soft edge gap probability for matrix ensembles with unitary, orthogonal and symplectic symmetry respectively, thereby reclaiming theorems due to Baik-Deift-Johansson and Baik-Rains.

Toric Hyperkahler Varieties
Published • View Publication • BIB
Extending work of Bielawski-Dancer and Konno, we develop a theory of toric hyperkahler varieties, which involves toric geometry, matroid theory and convex polyhedra. The framework is a detailed study of semi-projective toric varieties, meaning GIT quotients of affine spaces by torus actions, and specifically, of Lawrence toric varieties, meaning GIT quotients of even-dimensional affine spaces by symplectic torus actions. A toric hyperkahler variety is a complete intersection in a Lawrence toric variety. Both varieties are non-compact, and they share the same cohomology ring, namely, the Stanley-Reisner ring of a matroid modulo a linear system of parameters. Familiar applications of toric geometry to combinatorics, including the Hard Lefschetz Theorem and the volume polynomials of Khovanskii-Pukhlikov, are extended to the hyperkahler setting. When the matroid is graphic, our construction gives the toric quiver varieties, in the sense of Nakajima.

The cohomology ring of weight varieties and polygon spaces
Published in Advances in Mathematics 160 (2001), no. 2, pp. 175-204 • View Publication • BIB
We use a theorem of Tolman and Weitsman to find explicit formulæfor the rational cohomology rings of the symplectic reduction of flag varieties in C^n, or generic coadjoint orbits of SU(n), by (maximal) torus actions. We also calculate the cohomology ring of the moduli space of $n$ points in CP^k, which is isomorphic to the Grassmannian of k-planes in C^n, by realizing it as a degenerate coadjoint orbit.

Alcoves associated to special fibers of local models
Published • View Publication • BIB
The special fiber of the local model of a PEL Shimura variety with Iwahori-type level structure admits a cellular decomposition. The set of strata is in a natural way a finite subset of the affine Weyl group determined by the Shimura data. In this paper, we generalize and give a new proof of a theorem of Kottwitz and Rapoport concerning the description of this set for the case of linear and symplectic groups. For higher rank groups not of type A_n, we produce counterexamples showing the situation is not as nice in general. Also, we recover a theorem of Deodhar characterizing the Bruhat order on S_n.
Oriented Lagrangian Matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we present a definition of oriented Lagrangian symplectic matroids and their representations. Classical concepts of orientation and this extension may both be thought of as stratifications of thin Schubert cells into unions of connected components. The definitions are made first in terms of a combinatorial axiomatisation, and then again in terms of elementary geometric properties of the Coxeter matroid polytope. We also generalise the concept of rank and signature of a quadratic form to symplectic Lagrangian matroids in a surprisingly natural way.

Embeddings of Schur functions into types B/C/D
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider the problem of embedding the semi-ring of Schur-positive symmetric polynomials into its analogue for the classical types $B/C/D$. If we preserve highest weights and add the additional Lie-theoretic parity assumption that the weights in images of Schur functions lie in a single translate of the root lattice, there are exactly two solutions. These naturally extend the Kirillov--Reshetikhin decompositions of representations of symplectic and orthogonal quantum affine algebras $U_q(\hat{g})$ (some still conjectural, some recently proven).

Generalized toric varieties for simple non-rational convex polytopes
We call complex quasifold of dimension k a space that is locally isomorphic to the quotient of an open subset of the space C^k by the holomorphic action of a discrete group; the analogue of a complex torus in this setting is called a complex quasitorus. We associate to each simple polytope, rational or not, a family of complex quasifolds having same dimension as the polytope, each containing a dense open orbit for the action of a suitable complex quasitorus. We show that each of these spaces M is diffeomorphic to one of the symplectic quasifolds defined in http://arXiv.org/abs/math:SG/9904179, and that the induced symplectic structure is compatible with the complex one, thus defining on M the structure of a Kaehler quasifold. These spaces may be viewed as a generalization of the toric varieties that are usually associated to those simple convex polytopes that are rational.

Torus actions, equivariant moment-angle complexes, and coordinate subspace arrangements
Published in J. Math. Sci. (N. Y.) 113 (2003), no. 4, 558-568 • View Publication • BIB
We show that the cohomology algebra of the complement of a coordinate subspace arrangement in m-dimensional complex space is isomorphic to the cohomology algebra of Stanley-Reisner face ring of a certain simplicial complex on m vertices. (The face ring is regarded as a module over the polynomial ring on m generators.) Then we calculate the latter cohomology algebra by means of the standard Koszul resolution of polynomial ring. To prove these facts we construct an equivariant with respect to the torus action homotopy equivalence between the complement of a coordinate subspace arrangement and the moment-angle complex defined by the simplicial complex. The moment-angle complex is a certain subset of a unit poly-disk in m-dimensional complex space invariant with respect to the action of an m-dimensional torus. This complex is a smooth manifold provided that the simplicial complex is a simplicial sphere, but otherwise has more complicated structure. Then we investigate the equivariant topology of the moment-angle complex and apply the Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence. We also relate our results with well known facts in the theory of toric varieties and symplectic geometry.

The Gromov-Witten potential of a point, Hurwitz numbers, and Hodge integrals
Published • View Publication • BIB
Hurwitz numbers, which count certain covers of the projective line (or, equivalently, factorizations of permuations into transpositions), have been extensively studied for over a century. The Gromov-Witten potential F of a point, the generating series for Hodge integrals on the moduli space of curves, has been a central object of study in Gromov-Witten theory. We define a slightly enriched Gromov-Witten potential G (including integrals involving one "lambda-class"), and show that after a non-trivial change of variables, G=H in positive genus, where H is a generating series for Hurwitz numbers. We prove a conjecture of Goulden and Jackson on higher genus Hurwitz numbers, which turns out to be an analogue of a genus expansion ansatz of Itzykson and Zuber. As consequences, we have new combinatorial constraints on F, and a much more direct proof of the ansatz of Itzykson and Zuber. We can produce recursions and explicit formulas for Hurwitz numbers; the algorithm presented should prove "all" such recursions. Furthermore, there are many more recursions than previously suspected from geometry (and indeed they should exist in all genera); as examples we present surprisingly simple new recursions in genus up to 3 that are geometrically mysterious. As we expect this paper also to be of interest to combinatorialists, we have tried to make it as self-contained as possible, including reviewing some results and definitions well known in algebraic and symplectic geometry, and mathematical physics.

Restricting Schubert classes
Let V be a 2n-dimensional complex symplectic space. Let G' be the Lagrangian Grassmannian of maximal isotropic subspaces of V embedded via the inclusion i into the Grassmannian G of all n-dimensional subspaces of V. We discuss the restriction via i* of a Schubert class from H(G), as an integral linear combination of Schubert classes in H(G'). Among the main tools we mention Stembridge's results on shifted tableaux. Using these results and a generalization of the Macdonald-You identity from an earlier author's paper, we establish several related algebro-geometric formulas.
Simply-laced Coxeter groups and groups generated by symplectic transvections
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let W be an arbitrary Coxeter group of simply-laced type (possibly infinite but of finite rank), u,v be any two elements in W, and i be a reduced word (of length m) for the pair (u,v) in the Coxeter group W\times W. We associate to i a subgroup Gamma_i in GL_m(Z) generated by symplectic transvections. We prove among other things that the subgroups corresponding to different reduced words for the same pair (u,v) are conjugate to each other inside GL_m(Z). We also generalize the enumeration result of the first three authors (see AG/9802093) by showing that, under certain assumptions on u and v, the number of Gamma_i(F_2)-orbits in F_2^m is equal to 3\times 2^s, where s is the number of simple reflections that appear in a reduced decomposition for u or v and F_2 is the two-element field.

Cohomology of a Hamiltonian T-space with involution
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $M$ be a compact symplectic manifold on which a compact torus $T$ acts Hamiltonialy with a moment map $μ$. Suppose there exists a symplectic involution $θ:M\to M$, such that $μ\circθ=-μ$. Assuming that 0 is a regular value of $μ$, we calculate the trace of the action of $θ$ on the cohomology of $M$ in terms of the trace of the action of $θ$ on the symplectic reduction $μ^{-1}(0)/T$ of $M$. This result generalizes a theorem of R. Stanley, who considered the case when $M$ was a toric variety.

A Pieri-type formula for isotropic flag manifolds
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc., 354 No. 7, (2002), 2659-2705 • View Publication • BIB
We give the formula for multiplying a Schubert class on an odd orthogonal or symplectic flag manifold by a special Schubert class pulled back from a Grassmannian of maximal isotropic subspaces. This is also the formula for multiplying a type $B$ (respectively, type $C$) Schubert polynomial by the Schur $P$-polynomial $p_m$ (respectively, the Schur $Q$-polynomial $q_m$). Geometric constructions and intermediate results allow us to ultimately deduce this from formulas for the classical flag manifold. These intermediate results are concerned with the Bruhat order of the Coxeter group ${\mathcal B}_\infty$, identities of the structure constants for the Schubert basis of cohomology, and intersections of Schubert varieties. We show these identities follow from the Pieri-type formula, except some `hidden symmetries' of the structure constants. Our analysis leads to a new partial order on the Coxeter group ${\mathcal B}_\infty$ and formulas for many of these structure constants.

Identities for classical group characters of nearly rectangular shape
Published in J. Algebra 209 (1998), 1-64 • View Publication • BIB
We derive several identities that feature irreducible characters of the general linear, the symplectic, the orthogonal, and the special orthogonal groups. All the identities feature characters that are indexed by shapes that are "nearly" rectangular, by which we mean that the shapes are rectangles except for one row or column that might be shorter than the others. As applications we prove new results in plane partitions and tableaux enumeration, including new refinements of the Bender-Knuth and MacMahon (ex-)conjectures.

An independent set axiomatization for symplectic matroids
One of the simplest axiomatizations of a matroid is in terms of independent sets. Curiously, no such independent set axiomatization is known for Gelfand and Serganova's WP-matroids (which are ``Coxeter group analogues'' of matroids). Here we state and prove such an axiomatization in the special case of symplectic matroids. No prior knowledge of WP-matroids is assumed; we believe the paper should be accessible and interesting to anyone with some interest in matroids.

Enumeration of walks on lattices. I
This work develops a methodical approach to counting of walks on cartesian products, biproducts, symmetric and exterior powers and bipowers, Schur operations, coverings and semicoverings of weighted graphs. For weight and root lattices of semisimple Lie algebras, this approach allows us to compute various combinatorial and representation-theoretical constants, in particular, the number of plane symplectic wave graphs with given number of vertices.

Symplectic tensor invariants, wave graphs and S-tris
The spaces of invariants of tensor powers of the defining representation of Sp(2n) are provided with the bases parametrized by symplectic wave graphs introduced here especially for this purpose. The proof utilizes a game similar to Tetris, named here S-tris. This work continues my previous work on the tensor invariants of SL(n), wave graphs and L-tris.
