Incidence Modules for Symplectic Spaces in Characteristic Two
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the permutation action of a finite symplectic group of characteristic 2 on the set of subspaces of its standard module which are either totally isotropic or else complementary to totally isotropic subspaces with respect to the alternating form. A general formula is obtained for the 2-rank of the incidence matrix for the inclusion of one-dimensional subspaces in the distinguished subspaces of a fixed dimension.

Hook-content formulae for symplectic and orthogonal tableaux
Published in Can. Math. Bull. 55 (2012) 462-473 • View Publication • BIB
By considering the specialisation $s_λ(1,q,q^2,...,q^{n-1})$ of the Schur function, Stanley was able to describe a formula for the number of semistandard Young tableaux of shape $λ$ in terms of two properties of the boxes in the diagram for $λ$. Using specialisations of symplectic and orthogonal Schur functions, we derive corresponding formulae, first given by El Samra and King, for the number of semistandard symplectic and orthogonal $λ$-tableaux.

Schubert Polynomials for the affine Grassmannian of the symplectic group
Published in Mathematische Zeitschrift 264(4) (2010) 765-811 • View Publication • BIB
We study the Schubert calculus of the affine Grassmannian Gr of the symplectic group. The integral homology and cohomology rings of Gr are identified with dual Hopf algebras of symmetric functions, defined in terms of Schur's P and Q-functions. An explicit combinatorial description is obtained for the Schubert basis of the cohomology of Gr, and this is extended to a definition of the affine type C Stanley symmetric functions. A homology Pieri rule is also given for the product of a special Schubert class with an arbitrary one.

Expanders and the Affine Building of ${\rm Sp}_n$
For $n \geq 2$ and a local field $K$, let $Δ_n$ denote the affine building naturally associated to the symplectic group ${\rm Sp}_n(K)$. We compute the spectral radius of the subgraph $Y_n$ of $Δ_n$ induced by the special vertices in $Δ_n$, from which it follows that $Y_n$ is an analogue of a family of expanders and is non-amenable.

A survey of hypertoric geometry and topology
Published • View Publication • BIB
Hypertoric varieties are quaternionic analogues of toric varieties, important for their interaction with the combinatorics of matroids as well as for their prominent place in the rapidly expanding field of algebraic symplectic and hyperkahler geometry. The aim of this survey is to give clear definitions and statements of known results, serving both as a reference and as a point of entry to this beautiful subject.

The Hopf Algebra Structure of the Character Rings of Classical Groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
The character ring \CGL of covariant irreducible tensor representations of the general linear group admits a Hopf algebra structure isomorphic to the Hopf algebra \Sym$ of symmetric functions. Here we study the character rings \CO and \CSp of the orthogonal and symplectic subgroups of the general linear group within the same framework of symmetric functions. We show that \CO and \CSp also admit natural Hopf algebra structures that are isomorphic to that of \CGL, and hence to \Sym. The isomorphisms are determined explicitly, along with the specification of standard bases for \CO and \CSp analogous to those used for \Sym. A major structural change arising from the adoption of these bases is the introduction of new orthogonal and symplectic Schur-Hall scalar products. Significantly, the adjoint with respect to multiplication no longer coincides, as it does in the \CGL case, with a Foulkes derivative or skew operation. The adjoint and Foulkes derivative now require separate definitions, and their properties are explored here in the orthogonal and symplectic cases. Moreover, the Hopf algebras \CO and \CSp are not self-dual. The dual Hopf algebras \CO^* and \CSp^* are identified. Finally, the Hopf algebra of the universal rational character ring \CGLrat of mixed irreducible tensor representations of the general linear group is introduced and its structure maps identified.

Toric symplectic ball packing
Published in Published in Topology and its Applications 153 (2006) 3633-3644 • View Publication • BIB
We define and solve the toric version of the symplectic ball packing problem, in the sense of listing all 2n-dimensional symplectic-toric manifolds which admit a perfect packing by balls embedded in a symplectic and torus equivariant fashion. In order to do this we first describe a problem in geometric-combinatorics which is equivalent to the toric symplectic ball packing problem. Then we solve this problem using arguments from Convex Geometry and Delzant theory. Applications to symplectic blowing-up are also presented, and some further questions are raised in the last section.

Maximal ball packings of symplectic-toric manifolds
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let M be a symplectic-toric manifold of dimension at least four. This paper investigates the so called symplectic ball packing problem in the toral equivariant setting. We show that the set of toric symplectic ball packings of M admits the structure of a convex polytope. Previous work of the first author shows that up to equivalence, only CP^1 x CP^1 and CP^2 admit density one packings when n=2 and only CP^n admits density one packings when n>2. In contrast, we show that for a fixed n>=2 and each r in (0, 1), there are uncountably many inequivalent 2n-dimensional symplectic-toric manifolds with a maximal toric packing of density r. This result follows from a general analysis of how the densities of maximal packings change while varying a given symplectic-toric manifold through a family of symplectic-toric manifolds that are equivariantly diffeomorphic but not equivariantly symplectomorphic.

Hilbert functions of points on Schubert varieties in Orthogonal Grassmannians
Published • View Publication • BIB
A solution is given to the following problem: how to compute the multiplicity, or more generally the Hilbert function, at a point on a Schubert variety in an orthogonal Grassmannian. Standard monomial theory is applied to translate the problem from geometry to combinatorics. The solution of the resulting combinatorial problem forms the bulk of the paper. This approach has been followed earlier to solve the same problem for the Grassmannian and the symplectic Grassmannian. As an application, we present an interpretation of the multiplicity as the number of non-intersecting lattice paths of a certain kind. Taking the Schubert variety to be of a special kind and the point to be the "identity coset," our problem specializes to a problem about Pfaffian ideals treatments of which by different methods exist in the literature. Also available in the literature is a geometric solution when the point is a "generic singularity."

Revisiting Tietze-Nakajima - Local and Global Convexity for Maps
Published • View Publication • BIB
A theorem of Tietze and Nakamija, from 1928, asserts that if a subset X of R^n is closed, connected, and locally convex, then it is convex. We give an analogous "local to global convexity" theorem when the inclusion map of X to R^n is replaced by a map from a topological space X to R^n that satisfies certain local properties. We say that a map from a topological space to R^n is convex if every two points in the space can be connected by a path whose composition with the map is a weakly monotone parametrization of a straight line segment. Let X be a connected Hausdorff topological space, let T be a convex subset of R^n, and let Psi: X \to T be a continuous proper map. Suppose that every point in X is contained in an open set U such that the map Psi|_U: U \to Psi(U) is convex and open. Then the map Psi: X \to Ψ(X) is convex and open. Consequently, its image is convex and its level sets are connected. Our motivation comes from the Condevaux-Dazord-Molino proof of the Atiyah-Guillemin-Sternberg convexity theorem in symplectic geometry.

Universal graded characters and limit of Lusztig $q$-analogues
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let G be a symplectic or orthogonal complex Lie group with Lie algebra g. As a G-module, the decomposition of the symmetric algebra S(g) into its irreducible components can be explicitely obtained by using identities due to Littlewood. We show that the multiplicities appearing in the decomposition of the k-th graded component of S(g) do not depend on the rank n of g providing n is sufficiently large. Thanks to a classical result by Kostant, we establish a similar result for the k-th graded component of the space H(g) of G-harmonic polynomials. These stabilization properties are equivalent to the existence of a limit in infinitely many variables for the graded characters associated to S(g) and H(g). The limits so obtained are formal series with coefficients in the ring of universal characters introduced by Koike and Terada. From Hesselink expression of the graded character of harmonics, the coefficient of degree k in the Lusztig q-analogue associated to the partition lambda and the weight 0 thus stablizes for n sufficiently large. By using Morris-type recurrence formulas, we prove that this is also true for the polynomials $K_{λ,μ}^{g}(q)$ where mu is a nonempty fixed partition. This can be reformulated in terms of a stability property for the dimension of the components of the Brylinski-Kostant filtration. We also associate to each pair of partitions (lambda, mu) formal series $K_{λ,μ}^{so}(q)$ and $K_{λ,μ}^{sp}(q)$, which can be regarded as natural limit of the Lusztig q-analogues. One gives a duality property for these limits and obtains simple expressions when lambda is a row or a column partition.

New constructions of two slim dense near hexagons
Published in Discrete Math. 308 (2008), 2018--2024 • View Publication • BIB
We provide a geometrical construction of the slim dense near hexagon with parameters $(s,t,t_{2})=(2,5,\{1,2\})$. Using this construction, we construct the rank 3 symplectic dual polar space $DSp(6,2)$ which is the slim dense near hexagon with parameters $(s,t,t_{2})=(2,6,2)$. Both the near hexagons are constructed from two copies of a generalized quadrangle with parameters (2,2).

Equivariant cohomology, symmetric functions and the Hilbert schemes of points on the total space of the invertible sheaf O(-2) over the projective line
Let X be the quasi-projective symplectic surface that is given by the total space of the invertible sheaf O(-2) over the projective line. Let Hilb X be the family of Hilbert schemes of points on X. We give and prove a closed formula expressing any multiplicative characteristic class evaluated on the Hilb X in terms of the standard Fock space description of the cohomology of the Hilb X. As a side result, we also deduce a formula for the Chern character of the tangent bundles of the Hilb X. The results found here are another step towards a complete description of the tangent bundle of the Hilbert scheme of a general quasi-projective surface as the formulas given here yield certain coefficients in that description. Finally, we also give a closed formula expressing any multiplicative characteristic class evaluated on some tautological bundles on the Hilb X.

Skew Hadamard difference sets from the Ree-Tits slice symplectic spreads in PG(3,3^{2h+1})
Published • View Publication • BIB
Using a class of permutation polynomials of $F_{3^{2h+1}}$ obtained from the Ree-Tits symplectic spreads in $PG(3,3^{2h+1})$, we construct a family of skew Hadamard difference sets in the additive group of $F_{3^{2h+1}}$. With the help of a computer, we show that these skew Hadamard difference sets are new when $h=2$ and $h=3$. We conjecture that they are always new when $h>3$. Furthermore, we present a variation of the classical construction of the twin prime power difference sets, and show that inequivalent skew Hadamard difference sets lead to inequivalent difference sets with twin prime power parameters.

Quadratic transformations of Macdonald and Koornwinder polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
When one expands a Schur function in terms of the irreducible characters of the symplectic (or orthogonal) group, the coefficient of the trivial character is 0 unless the indexing partition has an appropriate form. A number of q-analogues of this fact were conjectured in math.QA/0112035; the present paper proves most of those conjectures, as well as some new identities suggested by the proof technique. The proof involves showing that a nonsymmetric version of the relevant integral is annihilated by a suitable ideal of the affine Hecke algebra, and that any such annihilated functional satisfies the desired vanishing property. This does not, however, give rise to vanishing identities for the standard nonsymmetric Macdonald and Koornwinder polynomials; we discuss the required modification to these polynomials to support such results.

A Quasi Curtis-Tits-Phan theorem for the symplectic group
Published • View Publication • BIB
We obtain the symplectic group as an amalgam of low rank subgroups akin to Levi components. We do this by having the group act flag-transitively on a new type of geometry and applying Tits' lemma. This provides a new way of recognizing the symplectic groups from a small collection of small subgroups. The geometry consists of all subspaces of maximal rank in a vector space of maximal rank with respect to a symplectic form. The main result holds for fields of size at least 3. We analyze the geometry over the field of size 2 and describe its simply connected cover if different from the geometry.

The permutation action of finite symplectic groups of odd characteristic on their standard modules
Published in Journal of Algebra 323 (2010) 3157-3181 • View Publication • BIB
Motivated by the incidence problems between points and flats of a symplectic polar space, we study a large class of submodules of the space of functions on the standard module of a finite symplectic group of odd characteristic. Our structure results on this class of submodules allow us to determine the $p$-ranks of the incidence matrices between points and flats of the symplectic polar space. In particular, we give an explicit formula for the $p$-rank of the generalized quadrangle ${\rm W}(3,q)$, where $q$ is an odd prime power. Combined with the earlier results of Sastry and Sin on the 2-rank of ${\rm W}(3,2^t)$, it completes the determination of the $p$-ranks of ${\rm W}(3,q)$.

Base subsets of symplectic Grassmannians
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $V$ and $V'$ be $2n$-dimensional vector spaces over fields $F$ and $F'$. Let also $Ω: V\times V\to F$ and $Ω': V'\times V'\to F'$ be non-degenerate symplectic forms. Denote by $Π$ and $Π'$ the associated $(2n-1)$-dimensional projective spaces. The sets of $k$-dimensional totally isotropic subspaces of $Π$ and $Π'$ will denoted by ${\mathcal G}_{k}$ and ${\mathcal G}'_{k}$, respectively. Apartments of the associated buildings intersect ${\mathcal G}_{k}$ and ${\mathcal G}'_{k}$ by so-called base subsets. We show that every mapping of ${\mathcal G}_{k}$ to ${\mathcal G}'_{k}$ sending base subsets to base subsets is induced by a symplectic embedding of $Π$ to $Π'$.

Betti numbers of holomorphic symplectic quotients via arithmetic Fourier transform
Published • View Publication • BIB
A Fourier transform technique is introduced for counting the number of solutions of holomorphic moment map equations over a finite field. This in turn gives information on Betti numbers of holomorphic symplectic quotients. As a consequence simple unified proofs are obtained for formulas of Poincare polynomials of toric hyperkahler varieties, Poincare polynomials of Hilbert schemes of points and twisted ADHM spaces of instantons on C^2 and Poincare polynomials of all Nakajima quiver varieties. As an application, a proof of a conjecture of Kac on the number of absolutely indecomposable representations of a quiver is announced.

Boundary qKZ equation and generalized Razumov-Stroganov sum rules for open IRF models
Published • View Publication • BIB
We find higher rank generalizations of the Razumov--Stroganov sum rules at $q=-e^{iπ\over k+1}$ for $A_{k-1}$ models with open boundaries, by constructing polynomial solutions of level one boundary quantum Knizhnik--Zamolodchikov equations for $U_q(\frak{sl}(k))$. The result takes the form of a character of the symplectic group, that leads to a generalization of the number of vertically symmetric alternating sign matrices. We also investigate the other combinatorial point $q=-1$, presumably related to the geometry of nilpotent matrix varieties.
