On the asymptotics of Kronecker coefficients
Published • View Publication • BIB
Kronecker coefficients encode the tensor products of complex irreducible representations of symmetric groups. Their stability properties have been considered recently by several authors (Vallejo, Pak and Panova, Stembridge). We describe a geometric method, based on Schur-Weyl duality, that allows to produce huge series of instances of this phenomenon. Moreover the method gives access to lots of extra information. Most notably, we can often compute the stable Kronecker coefficients, sometimes as number of points in very explicit polytopes. We can also describe explicitely the moment polytope in the neighbourhood of our stable triples. Finally, we explain an observation of Stembridge on the behaviour of certain rectangular Kronecker coefficients, by relating it to the affine Dynkin diagram of type $E\_6$.
RNA, local moves on plane trees, and transpositions on tableaux
Published in Involve, a Journal of Mathematics 11:3 (2018), 383-411 • View Publication • BIB
We define a collection of functions $s_i$ on the set of plane trees (or standard Young tableaux). The functions are adapted from transpositions in the representation theory of the symmetric group and almost form a group action. They were motivated by $\textit{local moves}$ in combinatorial biology, which are maps that represent a certain unfolding and refolding of RNA strands. One main result of this study identifies a subset of local moves that we call $s_i$-local moves, and proves that $s_i$-local moves correspond to the maps $s_i$ acting on standard Young tableaux. We also prove that the graph of $s_i$-local moves is a connected, graded poset with unique minimal and maximal elements. We then extend this discussion to functions $s_i^C$ that mimic reflections in the Weyl group of type $C$. The corresponding graph is no longer connected, but we prove it has two connected components, one of symmetric and the other of asymmetric plane trees. We give open questions and possible biological interpretations.

Stochastic monotonicity in Young graph and Thoma theorem
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices 2015 (23): 12920-12940 • View Publication • BIB
We show that the order on probability measures, inherited from the dominance order on the Young diagrams, is preserved under natural maps reducing the number of boxes in a diagram by $1$. As a corollary we give a new proof of the Thoma theorem on the structure of characters of the infinite symmetric group. We present several conjectures generalizing our result. One of them (if it is true) would imply the Kerov's conjecture on the classification of all homomorphisms from the algebra of symmetric functions into $\mathbb R$ which are non-negative on Hall--Littlewood polynomials.

The Colored Eulerian Descent Algebra
Published • View Publication • BIB
Using a new colored analogue of P-partitions, we prove the existence of a colored Eulerian descent algebra which is a subalgebra of the Mantaci-Reutenauer algebra. This algebra has a basis consisting of formal sums of colored permutations with the same number of descents (using Steingrímsson's definition of the descent set of a colored permutation). The colored Eulerian descent algebra extends familiar Eulerian descent algebras from the symmetric group algebra and the hyperoctahedral group algebra to colored permutation group algebras. We also describe a set of orthogonal idempotents that spans the colored Eulerian descent algebra and includes, as a special case, the familiar Eulerian idempotents in the group algebra of the symmetric group.

On the cardinality of a factor set in the symmetric group
Published in Asian-European Journal of Mathematics,Vol. 7, No. 2 (2014) 1450027 • View Publication • BIB
Let $n$ be a positive integer, $σ$ be an element of the symmetric group $\mathcal{S}_n$ and let $σ$ be a cycle of length $n$. The elements $α,β\in \mathcal{S}_n$ are $σ$-equivalent, if there are natural numbers $k$ and $l$, such that $σ^k α=βσ^l$, which is the same as the condition to exist natural numbers $k_1$ and $l_1$, such that $α= σ^{k_1} βσ^{l_1}$. In this work we examine some properties of the so defined equivalence relation. We build a finite oriented graph $Γ_n$ with the help of which is described an algorithm for solving the combinatorial problem for finding the number of equivalence classes according to this relation.

Cayley graph on symmetric groups with generating block transposition sets
This paper deals with the Cayley graph $\Cay,$ where the generating set consists of all block transpositions. A motivation for the study of these particular Cayley graphs comes from current research in Bioinformatics. We prove that ${\rm{Aut}}(\Cay)$ is the product of the right translation group by $\textsf{N}\rtimes \textsf{D}_{n+1},$ where $\textsf{N}$ is the subgroup fixing $S_n$ element-wise and $\textsf{D}_{n+1}$ is a dihedral group of order $2(n+1)$. We conjecture that $\textsf{N}$ is trivial. We also prove that the subgraph $Γ$ with vertex-set $S_n$ is a $2(n-2)$-regular graph whose automorphism group is $\textsf{D}_{n+1}$. Furthermore, $Γ$ has as many as $n+1$ maximum cliques of size $2.$ Also, its subgraph $Γ(V)$ whose vertices are those in these cliques is a $3$-regular, Hamiltonian, and vertex-transitive graph.

Bounds on Kronecker and $q$-binomial coefficients
Published • View Publication • BIB
We present a lower bound on the Kronecker coefficients for tensor squares of the symmetric group via the characters of~$S_n$, which we apply to obtain various explicit estimates. Notably, we extend Sylvester's unimodality of $q$-binomial coefficients $\binom{n}{k}_q$ as polynomials in~$q$ to derive sharp bounds on the differences of their consecutive coefficients. We then derive effective asymptotic lower bounds for a wider class of Kronecker coefficients.

The Saxl Conjecture and the Dominance Order
Published • View Publication • BIB
In 2012 Jan Saxl conjectured that all irreducible representations of the symmetric group occur in the decomposition of the tensor square of the irreducible representation corresponding to the staircase partition. We make progress on this conjecture by proving the occurrence of all those irreducibles which correspond to partitions that are comparable to the staircase partition in the dominance order. Moreover, we use our result to show the occurrence of all irreducibles corresponding to hook partitions. This generalizes results by Pak, Panova, and Vallejo from 2013.

Conway groupoids and completely transitive codes
Published • View Publication • BIB
To each supersimple $2-(n,4,λ)$ design $\mathcal{D}$ one associates a `Conway groupoid,' which may be thought of as a natural generalisation of Conway's Mathieu groupoid associated to $M_{13}$ which is constructed from $\mathbb{P}_3$. We show that $\operatorname{Sp}_{2m}(2)$ and $2^{2m}.\operatorname{Sp}_{2m}(2)$ naturally occur as Conway groupoids associated to certain designs. It is shown that the incidence matrix associated to one of these designs generates a new family of completely transitive $\mathbb{F}_2$-linear codes with minimum distance 4 and covering radius 3, whereas the incidence matrix of the other design gives an alternative construction to a previously known family of completely transitive codes. We also give a new characterization of $M_{13}$ and prove that, for a fixed $λ> 0,$ there are finitely many Conway groupoids for which the set of morphisms does not contain all elements of the full alternating or symmetric group.

A generating function approach to counting theorems for square-free polynomials and maximal tori
Published • View Publication • BIB
A recent paper of Church, Ellenberg, and Farb uses topology and representation theory of the symmetric group to prove enumerative results about square-free polynomials and F-stable maximal tori of the general linear group over the algebraic closure of F_q. In this note, we use generating functions to give elementary proofs of some of their results, and some extensions.

Cohomology classes of interval positroid varieties and a conjecture of Liu
Published • View Publication • BIB
To each finite subset of $\mathbb{Z}^2$ (a diagram), one can associate a subvariety of a complex Grassmannian (a diagram variety), and a representation of a symmetric group (a Specht module). Liu has conjectured that the cohomology class of a diagram variety is represented by the Frobenius characteristic of the corresponding Specht module. We give a counterexample to this conjecture. However, we show that for the diagram variety of a permutation diagram, Liu's conjectured cohomology class $σ$ is at least an upper bound on the actual class $τ$, in the sense that $σ- τ$ is a nonnegative linear combination of Schubert classes. To do this, we exhibit the appropriate diagram variety as a component in a degeneration of one of Knutson's interval positroid varieties (up to Grassmann duality). A priori, the cohomology classes of these interval positroid varieties are represented by affine Stanley symmetric functions. We give a different formula for these classes as ordinary Stanley symmetric functions, one with the advantage of being Schur-positive and compatible with inclusions between Grassmannians.

The combinatorics of real double Hurwitz numbers with real positive branch points
Published in Int. Math. Res. Not. 2016.1 (2016), pp. 258-293 • View Publication • BIB
We investigate the combinatorics of real double Hurwitz numbers with real positive branch points using the symmetric group. Our main focus is twofold. First, we prove correspondence theorems relating these numbers to counts of tropical real covers and study the structure of real double Hurwitz numbers with the help of the tropical count. Second, we express the numbers as counts of paths in a subgraph of the Cayley graph of the symmetric group. By restricting to real double Hurwitz numbers with real positive branch points, we obtain a concise translation of the counting problem in terms of tuples of elements of the symmetric group that enables us to uncover the beautiful combinatorics of these numbers both in tropical geometry and in the Cayley graph.

$p$-vanishing conjugacy classes of symmetric groups
Published in J. of Algebra 450 (2016), 349-383 • View Publication • BIB
For a prime $p$, we say that a conjugacy class of a finite group $G$ is $p$-vanishing if every irreducible character of $G$ of degree divisible by $p$ takes value 0 on that conjugacy class. In this paper we completely classify 2-vanishing and 3-vanishing conjugacy classes for the symmetric group and do some work in the classification of $p$-vanishing conjugacy classes of the symmetric group for $p\geq 5$. This answers a question by Navarro for $p=2$ and $p=3$ and partly answers it for $p\geq 5$.

Stanley character polynomials
Published in The mathematical legacy of Richard P. Stanley, 323-334, Amer. Math. Soc., Providence, RI, 2016 • View Publication • BIB
Stanley considered suitably normalized characters of the symmetric groups on Young diagrams having a special geometric form, namely multirectangular Young diagrams. He proved that the character is a polynomial in the lengths of the sides of the rectangles forming the Young diagram and he conjectured an explicit form of this polynomial. This Stanley character polynomial and this way of parametrizing the set of Young diagrams turned out to be a powerful tool for several problems of the dual combinatorics of the characters of the symmetric groups and asymptotic representation theory, in particular to Kerov polynomials.

Upper bound on the block transposition diameter of the symmetric group
Given a generator set $S$ of the symmetric group ${\rm{Sym}}_n$, every permutation $π\in {\rm{Sym}_n}$ is a word (product of elements) of $S$. A positive integer $d(π)$ is associated with each $π\in{\rm{Sym}_n}$ taking the length of the shortest such word, and the $S$-diameter $d(S)$ is the maximum value of $d(π)$ with $π$ ranging over ${\rm{Sym_n}}$. The distance $d(π,ν)$ of two permutations $π,ν$ defined by $d(ν^{-1}\circπ)$ satisfies the axioms of a metric space. In this paper we consider the case where $S$ consists of all block transpositions of ${\rm{Sym_n}}$ and call $d(π)$ the block transposition distance of $π$. A strong motivation for the study of this special case comes from investigations of large-scale mutations of genome, where determining $d(π)$ is known as sorting the permutation $π$ by block transpositions. In the papers on this subject, toric equivalence classes often play a crucial role since $d(π)=d(ν)$ when $π$ and $ν$ are torically equivalent. A proof of this result can be found in the (unpublished) Hausen's Ph.D Dissertation thesis; see \cite{Ha}. Our main contribution is to obtain a bijective map on ${\rm{Sym}_n}$ from the toric equivalence that leaves the distances invariant. Using the properties of this map, we give an alternative proof of Hausen's result which actually fills a gap in the proof of the upper bound on $d(S)$ due to Eriksson and his coworkers; see \cite{EE}. We also revisit the proof of the key lemma \cite[Lemma 5,1]{EE}, giving more details and filling some gaps.

An isoperimetric inequality for conjugation-invariant sets in the symmetric group
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove an isoperimetric inequality for conjugation-invariant sets of size $k$ in $S_n$, showing that these necessarily have edge-boundary considerably larger than some other sets of size $k$ (provided $k$ is small). Specifically, let $T_n$ denote the Cayley graph on $S_n$ generated by the set of all transpositions. We show that if $A \subset S_n$ is a conjugation-invariant set with $|A| = pn! \leq n!/2$, then the edge-boundary of $A$ in $T_n$ has size at least $$c \cdot \frac {\log_2 (\tfrac 1{p})}{\log_2 \log_2 (\tfrac 2{p})}\cdot n \cdot |A|,$$ where $c$ is an absolute constant. (This is sharp up to an absolute constant factor, when $p = Θ(1/s!)$ for any $s \in \{1,2,...,n\}$.) It follows that if $p = n^{-Θ(1)}$, then the edge-boundary of a conjugation-invariant set of measure $p$ is necessarily a factor of $Ω(\log n / \log \log n)$ larger than the minimum edge-boundary over all sets of measure $p$.

Chains in Weak Order Posets Associated to Involutions
Published • View Publication • BIB
The W-set of an element of a weak order poset is useful in the cohomological study of the closures of spherical subgroups in generalized flag varieties. We explicitly describe in a purely combinatorial manner the W-sets of the weak order posets of three different sets of involutions in the symmetric group, namely, the set of all involutions, the set of all fixed point free involutions, and the set of all involutions with signed fixed points (or "clans"). These distinguished sets of involutions parameterize Borel orbits in the classical symmetric spaces associated to the general linear group. In particular, we give a complete characterization of the maximal chains of an arbitrary lower order ideal in any of these three posets.
A recurrence formula for Jack connection coefficients
This article is devoted to the study of Jack connection coefficients, a generalization of the connection coefficients of the classical commutative subalgebras of the group algebra of the symmetric group closely related to the theory of Jack symmetric functions. First introduced by Goulden and Jackson (1996) these numbers indexed by three partitions of a given integer $n$ and the Jack parameter $α$ are defined as the coefficients in the power sum expansion of the Cauchy sum for Jack symmetric functions. While very little is known about them, examples of computations for small values of $n$ tend to show that the nice properties of the special cases $α=1$ (connection coefficients of the class algebra) and $α= 2$ (connection coefficients of the double coset algebra) extend to general $α$. Goulden and Jackson conjectured that Jack connection coefficients are polynomials in $β= α-1$ with non negative integer coefficients given by some statistics on matchings on a set of $2n$ elements, the so called Matchings-Jack conjecture. In this paper we look at the case when two of the integer partitions are equal to the single part $(n)$ and use a framework by Lasalle (2008) for Jack symmetric functions to show that the coefficients satisfy a simple recurrence formula that makes their computation very effective and allow a better understanding of their properties. In particular we prove the Matchings-Jack conjecture in this case. Furthermore, we provide a bijective proof of the recurrence formula for $α\in \{1,2\}$ using the combinatorial interpretation of the coefficients for these specific values of the Jack parameter. Finally we exhibit the polynomial properties of more general coefficients where the two single part partitions are replaced by an arbitrary number of integer partitions either equal to $(n)$ or $[1^{n-2}2]$.

Power sum expansion of chromatic quasisymmetric functions
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 22 (2015), no. 2, Research Paper 2.7, 9pp (electronic) • View Publication • BIB
The chromatic quasisymmetric function of a graph was introduced by Shareshian and Wachs as a refinement of Stanley's chromatic symmetric function. An explicit combinatorial formula, conjectured by Shareshian and Wachs, expressing the chromatic quasisymmetric function of the incomparability graph of a natural unit interval order in terms of power sum symmetric functions, is proven. The proof uses a formula of Roichman for the irreducible characters of the symmetric group.

Permutation invariant lattices
Published in Discrete Mathematics, vol. 338 no. 8 (2015), pg. 1536--1541 • View Publication • BIB
We say that a Euclidean lattice in $\mathbb R^n$ is permutation invariant if its automorphism group has non-trivial intersection with the symmetric group $S_n$, i.e., if the lattice is closed under the action of some non-identity elements of $S_n$. Given a fixed element $τ\in S_n$, we study properties of the set of all lattices closed under the action of $τ$: we call such lattices $τ$-invariant. These lattices naturally generalize cyclic lattices introduced by Micciancio, which we studied in a recent paper. Continuing our investigation, we discuss some basic properties of permutation invariant lattices, in particular proving that the subset of well-rounded lattices in the set of all $τ$-invariant lattices in $\mathbb R^n$ has positive co-dimension (and hence comprises zero proportion) for all $τ$ different from an $n$-cycle.
