Random walks on quasisymmetric functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
Conditions are provided under which an endomorphism on quasisymmetric functions gives rise to a left random walk on the descent algebra which is also a lumping of a left random walk on permutations. Spectral results are also obtained. Several well-studied random walks are now realized this way: Stanley's QS-distribution results from endomorphisms given by evaluation maps, a-shuffles result from the a-th convolution power of the universal character, and the Tchebyshev operator of the second kind introduced recently by Ehrenborg and Readdy yields traditional riffle shuffles. A conjecture of Ehrenborg regarding the spectra for a family of random walks on ab-words is proven. A theorem of Stembridge from the theory of enriched P-partitions is also recovered as a special case.

$k$-Ribbon Fibonacci Tableaux
We extend the notion of $k$-ribbon tableaux to the Fibonacci lattice, a differential poset defined by R. Stanley in 1975. Using this notion, we describe an insertion algorithm that takes $k$-colored permutations to pairs of $k$-ribbon Fibonacci tableaux of the same shape, and we demonstrate a color-to-spin property, similar to that described by Shimozono and White for ribbon tableaux. We give an evacuation algorithm which relates the pair of $k$-ribbon Fibonacci tableaux obtained through the insertion algorithm to the pair of $k$-ribbon Fibonacci tableaux obtained using Fomin's growth diagrams. In addition, we present an analogue of Knuth relations for $k$-colored permutations and $k$-ribbon Fibonacci tableaux.

Real Zeros and Normal Distribution for statistics on Stirling permutations defined by Gessel and Stanley
We study Stirling permutations defined by Gessel and Stanley. We prove that their generating function according to the number of descents has real roots only. We use that fact to prove that the distribution of these descents, and other, equidistributed statistics on these objects converge to a normal distribution.
Distributive lattices defined for representations of rank two semisimple Lie algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a rank two root system and a pair of nonnegative integers, using only elementary combinatorics we construct two posets. The constructions are uniform across the root systems A1+A1, A2, C2, and G2. Examples appear in Figures 3.2 and 3.3. We then form the distributive lattices of order ideals of these posets. Corollary 5.4 gives elegant quotient-of-products expressions for the rank generating functions of these lattices (thereby providing answers to a 1979 question of Stanley). Also, Theorem 5.3 describes how these lattices provide a new combinatorial setting for the Weyl characters of representations of rank two semisimple Lie algebras. Most of these lattices are new; the rest of them (or related structures) have arisen in work of Stanley, Kashiwara, Nakashima, Littelmann, and Molev. In a future paper, one author shows that the posets constructed here form a Dynkin diagram-indexed answer to a combinatorially posed classification question. In a companion paper, some of these lattices are used to explicitly construct some representations of rank two semisimple Lie algebras. This implies that these lattices are strongly Sperner.

Edge colouring models for the Tutte polynomial and related graph invariants
For integer q>1, we derive edge q-colouring models for (i) the Tutte polynomial of a graph G on the hyperbola H_q, (ii) the symmetric weight enumerator of the set of group-valued q-flows of G, and (iii) a more general vertex colouring model partition function that includes these polynomials and the principal specialization order q of Stanley's symmetric monochrome polynomial. In the second half of the paper we exhibit a family of non-symmetric edge q-colouring models defined on k-regular graphs, whose partition functions for q >= k each evaluate the number of proper edge k-colourings of G when G is Pfaffian.

Permutations with Extremal number of Fixed Points
Published • View Publication • BIB
We extend Stanley's work on alternating permutations with extremal number of fixed points in two directions: first, alternating permutations are replaced by permutations with a prescribed descent set; second, instead of simply counting permutations we study their generating polynomials by number of excedances. Several techniques are used: Desarmenien's desarrangement combinatorics, Gessel's hook-factorization and the analytical properties of two new permutation statistics "DEZ" and "lec". Explicit formulas for the maximal case are derived by using symmetric function tools.

Catalan's intervals and realizers of triangulations
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory Series A 116, 1 (2009) 55-75 • View Publication • BIB
The Stanley lattice, Tamari lattice and Kreweras lattice are three remarkable orders defined on the set of Catalan objects of a given size. These lattices are ordered by inclusion: the Stanley lattice is an extension of the Tamari lattice which is an extension of the Kreweras lattice. The Stanley order can be defined on the set of Dyck paths of size $n$ as the relation of \emph{being above}. Hence, intervals in the Stanley lattice are pairs of non-crossing Dyck paths. In a former article, the second author defined a bijection $Φ$ between pairs of non-crossing Dyck paths and the realizers of triangulations (or Schnyder woods). We give a simpler description of the bijection $Φ$. Then, we study the restriction of $Φ$ to Tamari's and Kreweras' intervals. We prove that $Φ$ induces a bijection between Tamari intervals and minimal realizers. This gives a bijection between Tamari intervals and triangulations. We also prove that $Φ$ induces a bijection between Kreweras intervals and the (unique) realizers of stack triangulations. Thus, $Φ$ induces a bijection between Kreweras intervals and stack triangulations which are known to be in bijection with ternary trees.

Determinant Formulas Relating to Tableaux of Bounded Height
Published • View Publication • BIB
Chen et al. recently established bijections for $(d+1)$-noncrossing/ nonnesting matchings, oscillating tableaux of bounded height $d$, and oscillating lattice walks in the $d$-dimensional Weyl chamber. Stanley asked what is the total number of such tableaux of length $n$ and of any shape. We find a determinant formula for the exponential generating function. The same idea applies to prove Gessel's remarkable determinant formula for permutations with bounded length of increasing subsequences. We also give short algebraic derivations for some results of the reflection principle.

Glicci simplicial complexes
Published • View Publication • BIB
One of the main open questions in liaison theory is whether every homogeneous Cohen-Macaulay ideal in a polynomial ring is glicci, i.e. if it is in the G-liaison class of a complete intersection. We give an affirmative answer to this question for Stanley-Reisner ideals defined by simplicial complexes that are weakly vertex-decomposable. This class of complexes includes matroid, shifted and Gorenstein complexes respectively. Moreover, we construct a simplicial complex which shows that the property of being glicci depends on the characteristic of the base field. As an application of our methods we establish new evidence for two conjectures of Stanley on partitionable complexes and on Stanley decompositions.

A positivity conjecture for Jack polynomials
Published in Mathematical Research Letters 15 (2008), 661-681. • View Publication • BIB
We present a positivity conjecture for the coefficients of the development of Jack polynomials in terms of power sums. This extends Stanley's ex-conjecture about normalized characters of the symmetric group. We prove this conjecture for partitions having a rectangular shape.

Asymptotics of characters of symmetric groups related to Stanley character formula
Published in Ann. Math. 173 (2011), no. 2, 887-906 • View Publication • BIB
We prove an upper bound for characters of the symmetric groups. Namely, we show that there exists a constant a>0 with a property that for every Young diagram λwith n boxes, r(λ) rows and c(λ) columns |Tr ρ^λ(π) / Tr ρ^λ(e)| < [a max(r(λ)/n, c(λ)/n,|π|/n) ]^{|π|}, where |π| is the minimal number of factors needed to write π\in S_n as a product of transpositions. We also give uniform estimates for the error term in the Vershik-Kerov's and Biane's character formulas and give a new formula for free cumulants of the transition measure.

Proof of Stanley's conjecture about irreducible character values of the symmetric group
Published in Stanley's Formula for Characters of the Symmetric Group, Ann. Comb., 13 (4), pp. 453-461, 2010. • View Publication • BIB
R. Stanley has found a nice combinatorial formula for characters of irreducible representations of the symmetric group of rectangular shape. Then, he has given a conjectural generalisation for any shape. Here, we will prove this formula using shifted Schur functions and Jucys-Murphy elements.

Decomposition theorem for the cd-index of Gorenstein* posets
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove a decomposition theorem for the cd-index of a Gorenstein* poset analogous to the decomposition theorem for the intersection cohomology of a toric variety. From this we settle a conjecture of Stanley that the cd-index of Gorenstein* lattices is minimized on Boolean algebras.

Signed differential posets and sign-imbalance
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study signed differential posets, a signed version of differential posets. These posets satisfy enumerative identities which are signed analogues of those satisfied by differential posets. Our main motivations are the sign-imbalance identities for partition shapes originally conjectured by Stanley, now proven by Lam, Reifergerste and Sjostrand. We show that these identities result from a signed differential poset structure on Young's lattice, and explain similar identities for Fibonacci shapes.

Interpreting the two variable Distance enumerator of the Shi hyperplane arrangement
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give an interpretation of the coefficients of the two variable refinement $D_{\Sh_n}(q,t)$ of the distance enumerator of the Shi hyperplane arrangement $\Sh_n$ in $n$ dimensions. This two variable refinement was defined by Stanley \cite{stan-rota} for the general $r$-extended Shi hyperplane arrangements. We give an interpretation when $r=1$. We define three natural three-dimensional partitions of the number $(n+1)^{n-1}$. The first arises from parking functions of length $n$, the second from special posets on $n$ vertices defined by Athanasiadis and the third from spanning trees on $n+1$ vertices. We call the three partitions as the parking partition, the tree-poset partition and the spanning-tree partition respectively. We show that one of the parts of the parking partition is identical to the number of edge-labelled trees with label set $\{1,2,...,n\}$ on $n+1$ unlabelled vertices. We prove that the parking partition majorises the tree-poset partition and conjecture that the spanning-tree partition also majorises the tree-poset partition.

Stanley's character polynomials and coloured factorizations in the symmetric group
Published • View Publication • BIB
Stanley introduces polynomials which help evaluate symmetric group characters and conjectures that the coefficients of the polynomials are positive. Stanley later gives a conjectured combinatorial interpretation for the coefficients of the polynomials. Here, we prove the conjecture for the terms of highest degree.

Ehrhart Polynomial Roots and Stanley's Non-negativity Theorem
Published in Integer points in polyhedra--geometry, number theory, representation theory, algebra, optimization, statistics, 67--78, Contemp. Math., 452, Amer. Math. Soc., Providence, RI, 2008 • View Publication • BIB
Stanley's non-negativity theorem is at the heart of many of the results in Ehrhart theory. In this paper, we analyze the root behavior of general polynomials satisfying the conditions of Stanley's theorem and compare this to the known root behavior of Ehrhart polynomials. We provide a possible counterexample to a conjecture of the second author, M. Beck, J. De Loera, J. Pfeifle, and R. Stanley, and contribute some experimental data as well.

On the degree two entry of a Gorenstein $h$-vector and a conjecture of Stanley
Published in Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 136 (2008), No. 8, 2755-2762 • View Publication • BIB
In this note we establish a (non-trivial) lower bound on the degree two entry $h_2$ of a Gorenstein $h$-vector of any given socle degree $e$ and any codimension $r$. In particular, when $e=4$, that is for Gorenstein $h$-vectors of the form $h=(1,r,h_2,r,1)$, our lower bound allows us to prove a conjecture of Stanley on the order of magnitude of the minimum value, say $f(r)$, that $h_2$ may assume. In fact, we show that $$\lim_{r\to \infty} {f(r)\over r^{2/3}}= 6^{2/3}.$$ In general, we wonder whether our lower bound is sharp for all integers $e\geq 4$ and $r\geq 2$.
On distinguishing trees by their chromatic symmetric functions
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 115 (2008), pp. 237-253 • View Publication • BIB
Let $T$ be an unrooted tree. The \emph{chromatic symmetric function} $X_T$, introduced by Stanley, is a sum of monomial symmetric functions corresponding to proper colorings of $T$. The \emph{subtree polynomial} $S_T$, first considered under a different name by Chaudhary and Gordon, is the bivariate generating function for subtrees of $T$ by their numbers of edges and leaves. We prove that $S_T = <Φ,X_T>$, where $<\cdot,\cdot>$ is the Hall inner product on symmetric functions and $Φ$ is a certain symmetric function that does not depend on $T$. Thus the chromatic symmetric function is a stronger isomorphism invariant than the subtree polynomial. As a corollary, the path and degree sequences of a tree can be obtained from its chromatic symmetric function. As another application, we exhibit two infinite families of trees (\emph{spiders} and some \emph{caterpillars}), and one family of unicyclic graphs (\emph{squids}) whose members are determined completely by their chromatic symmetric functions.
