Differential operators, grammars and Young tableaux
In algebraic combinatorics and formal calculation, context-free grammar is defined by a formal derivative based on a set of substitution rules. In this paper, we investigate this issue from three related viewpoints. Firstly, we introduce a differential operator method. As one of the applications, we deduce a new grammar for the Narayana polynomials. Secondly, we investigate the normal ordered grammars associated with the Eulerian polynomials. Thirdly, motivated by the theory of differential posets, we introduce a box sorting algorithm which leads to a bijection between the terms in the expansion of $(cD)^nc$ and a kind of ordered weak set partitions, where $c$ is a smooth function in the indeterminate $x$ and $D$ is the derivative with respect to $x$. Using a map from ordered weak set partitions to standard Young tableaux, we find an expansion of $(cD)^nc$ in terms of standard Young tableaux. Combining this with the theory of context-free grammars, we provide a unified interpretations for the Ramanujan polynomials, André polynomials, left peak polynomials, interior peak polynomials, Eulerian polynomials of types $A$ and $B$, $1/2$-Eulerian polynomials, second-order Eulerian polynomials, and Narayana polynomials of types $A$ and $B$ in terms of standard Young tableaux. Along the same lines, we present an expansion of the powers of $c^kD$ in terms of standard Young tableaux, where $k$ is a positive integer. In particular, we provide four interpretations for the second-order Eulerian polynomials. All of the above apply to the theory of formal differential operator rings.

Regular Schur labeled skew shape posets and their 0-Hecke modules
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma(2024) • View Publication • BIB
Assuming Stanley's $P$-partition conjecture holds, the regular Schur labeled skew shape posets with underlying set $\{1,2,\ldots, n\}$ are precisely the posets $P$ such that the $P$-partition generating function is symmetric and the set of linear extensions of $P$, denoted $Σ_L(P)$, is a left weak Bruhat interval in the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$. We describe the permutations in $Σ_L(P)$ in terms of reading words of standard Young tableaux when $P$ is a regular Schur labeled skew shape poset, and classify $Σ_L(P)$'s up to descent-preserving isomorphism as $P$ ranges over regular Schur labeled skew shape posets. The results obtained are then applied to classify the $0$-Hecke modules $\mathsf{M}_P$ associated with regular Schur labeled skew shape posets $P$ up to isomorphism. Then we characterize regular Schur labeled skew shape posets as the posets whose linear extensions form a dual plactic-closed subset of $\mathfrak{S}_n$. Using this characterization, we construct distinguished filtrations of $\mathsf{M}_P$ with respect to the Schur basis when $P$ is a regular Schur labeled skew shape poset. Further issues concerned with the classification and decomposition of the $0$-Hecke modules $\mathsf{M}_P$ are also discussed.
The Pak--Postnikov and Naruse skew hook length formulas: a new proof
The classical hook length formula of enumerative combinatorics expresses the number of standard Young tableaux of a given partition shape as a single fraction. In recent years, two generalizations of this formula have emerged: one by Pak and Postnikov, replacing the number by a (rational) generating function, and one by Naruse, which generalizes the setting from a partition to a skew partition. Both generalizations appear to lie significantly deeper, with no simple proofs known. We combine them into a generating-function identity for skew partitions, and prove it in a fairly elementary way using recursion, determinants and simple combinatorics.

Murnaghan-Type Representations of the Elliptic Hall Algebra
Published • View Publication • BIB
We construct a new family of graded representations $\widetilde{W}_λ$ indexed by Young diagrams $λ$ for the positive elliptic Hall algebra $\mathcal{E}^{+}$ which generalizes the standard $\mathcal{E}^{+}$ action on symmetric functions. These representations have homogeneous bases of eigenvectors for the action of the Macdonald element $P_{0,1} \in \mathcal{E}^{+}$ generalizing the symmetric Macdonald functions. The analysis of the structure of these representations exhibits interesting combinatorics arising from the stable limits of periodic standard Young tableaux. We find an explicit combinatorial rule for the action of the multiplication operators $e_r[X]^{\bullet}$ generalizing the Pieri rule for symmetric Macdonald functions. Lastly, we obtain a family of interesting $q,t$ product-series identities which come from the analysis of certain combinatorial statistics associated to periodic standard Young tableaux.

Computational complexity of counting coincidences
Published in Theoret. Comput. Sci. 1015 (2024) 114776 • View Publication • BIB
Can you decide if there is a coincidence in the numbers counting two different combinatorial objects? For example, can you decide if two regions in $\mathbb{R}^3$ have the same number of domino tilings? There are two versions of the problem, with $2\times 1 \times 1$ and $2\times 2 \times 1$ boxes. We prove that in both cases the coincidence problem is not in the polynomial hierarchy unless the polynomial hierarchy collapses to a finite level. While the conclusions are the same, the proofs are notably different and generalize in different directions. We proceed to explore the coincidence problem for counting independent sets and matchings in graphs, matroid bases, order ideals and linear extensions in posets, permutation patterns, and the Kronecker coefficients. We also make a number of conjectures for counting other combinatorial objects such as plane triangulations, contingency tables, standard Young tableaux, reduced factorizations and the Littlewood--Richardson coefficients.
Inequalities among two rowed immanants of the $q$-Laplacian of Trees and Odd height peaks in generalized Dyck paths
Published in Journal of Difference Equations and Applications (2022), 28(2) 198-221 • View Publication • BIB
Let $T$ be a tree on $n$ vertices and let $L_q^T$ be the $q$-analogue of its Laplacian. For a partition $λ\vdash n$, let the normalized immanant of $L_q^T$ indexed by $λ$ be denoted as $d_λ(L_q^T)$. A string of inequalities among $d_λ(L_q^T)$ is known when $λ$ varies over hook partitions of $n$ as the size of the first part of $λ$ decreases. In this work, we show a similar sequence of inequalities when $λ$ varies over two row partitions of $n$ as the size of the first part of $λ$ decreases. Our main lemma is an identity involving binomial coefficients and irreducible character values of $S_n$ indexed by two row partitions. Our proof can be interpreted using the combinatorics of Riordan paths and our main lemma admits a nice probabilisitic interpretation involving peaks at odd heights in generalized Dyck paths or equivalently involving special descents in Standard Young Tableaux with two rows. As a corollary, we also get inequalities between $d_{λ_1}(L_q^{T_1})$ and $d_{λ_2}(L_q^{T_2})$ when $T_1$ and $T_2$ are comparable trees in the $GTS_n$ poset and when $λ_1$ and $λ_2$ are both two rowed partitions of $n$, with $λ_1$ having a larger first part than $λ_2$.
Young tableau reconstruction via minors
Published • View Publication • BIB
The tableau reconstruction problem, posed by Monks (2009), asks the following. Starting with a standard Young tableau $T$, a 1-minor of $T$ is a tableau obtained by first deleting any cell of $T$, and then performing jeu de taquin slides to fill the resulting gap. This can be iterated to arrive at the set of $k$-minors of $T$. The problem is this: given $k$, what are the values of $n$ such that every tableau of size $n$ can be reconstructed from its set of $k$-minors? For $k=1$, the problem was recently solved by Cain and Lehtonen. In this paper, we solve the problem for $k=2$, proving the sharp lower bound $n \geq 8$. In the case of multisets of $k$-minors, we also give a lower bound for arbitrary $k$, as a first step toward a sharp bound in the general multiset case.
Generalized Pitman-Stanley polytope: vertices and faces
Published • View Publication • BIB
In 1999, Pitman and Stanley introduced the polytope bearing their name along with a study of its faces, lattice points, and volume. The Pitman-Stanley polytope is well-studied due to its connections to probability, parking functions, the generalized permutahedra, and flow polytopes. Its lattice points correspond to plane partitions of skew shape with entries 0 and 1. Pitman and Stanley remarked that their polytope can be generalized so that lattice points correspond to plane partitions of skew shape with entries $0,1, \ldots , m$. Since then, this generalization has been untouched. We study this generalization and show that it can also be realized as a flow polytope of a grid graph. We give multiple characterizations of its vertices in terms of plane partitions of skew shape and integer flows. For a fixed skew shape, we show that the number of vertices of this polytope is a polynomial in $m$ whose leading term, in certain cases, counts standard Young tableaux of a shifted shape. Moreover, we give formulas for the number of faces, as well as generating functions for the number of vertices.

Computational Complexity in Algebraic Combinatorics
Published • View Publication • BIB
Algebraic Combinatorics originated in Algebra and Representation Theory, studying their discrete objects and integral quantities via combinatorial methods which have since developed independent and self-contained lives and brought us some beautiful formulas and combinatorial interpretations. The flagship hook-length formula counts the number of Standard Young Tableaux, which also gives the dimension of the irreducible Specht modules of the Symmetric group. The elegant Littlewood-Richardson rule gives the multiplicities of irreducible GL-modules in the tensor products of GL-modules. Such formulas and rules have inspired large areas of study and development beyond Algebra and Combinatorics, becoming applicable to Integrable Probability and Statistical Mechanics, and Computational Complexity Theory. We will see what lies beyond the reach of such nice product formulas and combinatorial interpretations and enter the realm of Computational Complexity Theory, that could formally explain the beauty we see and the difficulties we encounter in finding further formulas and ``combinatorial interpretations''. A 85-year-old such problem asks for a positive combinatorial formula for the Kronecker coefficients of the Symmetric group, another one pertains to the plethysm coefficients of the General Linear group. In the opposite direction, the study of Kronecker and plethysm coefficients leads to the disproof of the wishful approach of Geometric Complexity Theory (GCT) towards the resolution of the algebraic P vs NP Millennium problem, the VP vs VNP problem. In order to make GCT work and establish computational complexity lower bounds, we need to understand representation theoretic multiplicities in further detail, possibly asymptotically.

Equidistribution of set-valued statistics on standard Young tableaux and transversals
Published • View Publication • BIB
As a natural generalization of permutations, transversals of Young diagrams play an important role in the study of pattern avoiding permutations. Let $\mathcal{T}_λ(τ)$ and $\mathcal{ST}_λ(τ)$ denote the set of $τ$-avoiding transversals and $τ$-avoiding symmetric transversals of a Young diagram $λ$, respectively. In this paper, we are mainly concerned with the distribution of the peak set and the valley set on standard Young tableaux and pattern avoiding transversals. In particular, by introducing Knuth transformations on standard Young tableaux, we prove that the peak set and the valley set are equidistributed on the standard Young tableaux of shape $λ/μ$ for any skew diagram $λ/μ$. The equidistribution enables us to show that the peak set is equidistributed over $\mathcal{T}_λ(12\cdots kτ)$ (resp. $\mathcal{ST}_λ(12\cdots k τ)$) and $\mathcal{T}_λ(k\cdots 21τ) $ (resp. $\mathcal{ST}_λ(k\cdots 21τ)$) for any Young diagram $λ$ and any permutation $τ$ of $\{k+1, k+2, \ldots, k+m\}$ with $k,m\geq 1$. Our results are refinements of the result of Backelin-West-Xin which states that $|\mathcal{T}_λ(12\cdots kτ)|=|\mathcal{T}_λ(k\cdots 21 τ)|$ and the result of Bousquet-Mélou and Steingrímsson which states that $|\mathcal{ST}_λ(12\cdots k τ)|=|\mathcal{ST}_λ(k\cdots 21 τ)|$.

Lineup polytopes of product of simplices
Published • View Publication • BIB
Consider a real point configuration $\mathbf{A}$ of size $n$ and an integer $r \leq n$. The vertices of the $r$-lineup polytope of $\mathbf{A}$ correspond to the possible orderings of the top $r$ points of the configuration obtained by maximizing a linear functional. The motivation behind the study of lineup polytopes comes from the representability problem in quantum chemistry. In that context, the relevant point configurations are the vertices of hypersimplices and the integer points contained in an inflated regular simplex. The central problem consists in providing an inequality representation of lineup polytopes as efficiently as possible. In this article, we adapt the developed techniques to the quantum information theory setup. The appropriate point configurations become the vertices of products of simplices. A particular case is that of lineup polytopes of cubes, which form a type $B$ analog of hypersimplices, where the symmetric group of type~$A$ naturally acts. To obtain the inequalities, we center our attention on the combinatorics and the symmetry of products of simplices to obtain an algorithmic solution. Along the way, we establish relationships between lineup polytopes of products of simplices with the Gale order, standard Young tableaux, and the Resonance arrangement.

Chain algebras of finite distributive lattices
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics, Volume 59, pages 473-494, (2024) • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a family of toric algebras defined by maximal chains of a finite distributive lattice. Applying results on stable set polytopes we conclude that every such algebra is normal and Cohen-Macaulay, and give an interpretation of its Krull dimension in terms of the combinatorics of the underlying lattice. When the lattice is planar, we show that the corresponding chain algebra is generated by a sortable set of monomials and is isomorphic to a Hibi ring of another finite distributive lattice. As a consequence it has a defining toric ideal with a quadratic Gröbner basis, and its $h$-vector counts ascents in certain standard Young tableaux. If instead the lattice has dimension $n>2$, we show that the defining ideal has minimal generators of degree at least $n$.

Experimenting with Standard Young Tableaux

Using Symbolic Computation with Maple, we can discover lots of (rigorously-proved!) facts about Standard Young Tableaux, in particular the distribution of the entries in any specific cell, and the sorting probabilities.
Realizable Standard Young Tableaux
Given two vectors $u$ and $v$, their outer sum is given by the matrix $A$ with entries $A_{ij} = u_{i} + v_{j}$. If the entries of $u$ and $v$ are increasing and sufficiently generic, the total ordering of the entries of the matrix is a standard Young tableau of rectangular shape. We call standard Young tableaux arising in this way realizable. The set of realizable tableaux was defined by Mallows and Vanderbei for studying a deconvolution algorithm, but we show they have appeared in many other contexts including sorting algorithms, quantum computing, random sorting networks, reflection arrangements, fiber polytopes, and Goodman and Pollack's theory of allowable sequences. In our work, we prove tight bounds on the asymptotic number of realizable rectangular tableaux. We also derive tight asymptotics for the number of realizable allowable sequences, which are in bijection with realizable staircase-shaped standard Young tableaux with the notion of realizability coming from the theory of sorting networks. As a consequence, we resolve an open question of Angel, Gorin, and Holroyd from 2012 and improve upon a 1986 result of Goodman and Pollack.
Bounded Littlewood identities for cylindric Schur functions
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 378 (2025), 6765-6829 • View Publication • BIB
The identities which are in the literature often called ``bounded Littlewood identities" are determinantal formulas for the sum of Schur functions indexed by partitions with bounded height. They have interesting combinatorial consequences such as connections between standard Young tableaux of bounded height, lattice walks in a Weyl chamber, and noncrossing matchings. In this paper we prove affine analogs of the bounded Littlewood identities. These are determinantal formulas for sums of cylindric Schur functions. We also study combinatorial aspects of these identities. As a consequence we obtain an unexpected connection between cylindric standard Young tableaux and \( r \)-noncrossing and \( s \)-nonnesting matchings.

Correlation inequalities for linear extensions
Published in Adv. in Math. 458 (2024), No. 109954, 33 pp • View Publication • BIB
We employ the combinatorial atlas technology to prove new correlation inequalities for the number of linear extensions of finite posets. These include the approximate independence of probabilities and expectations of values of random linear extensions, closely related to Stanley's inequality. We also give applications to the numbers of standard Young tableaux and to Euler numbers.

Positivity properties for spherical functions of maximal Young subgroups
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $S_k \times S_{n-k}$ be a maximal Young subgroup of the symmetric group $S_n$. We introduce a basis ${\mathcal B}_{n,k}$ for the coset space $S_n/S_k \times S_{n-k}$ that is naturally parametrized by the set of standard Young tableaux with $n$ boxes, at most two rows, and at most $k$ boxes in the second row. The basis ${\mathcal B}_{n,k}$ has positivity properties that resemble those of a root system, and there is a composition series of the coset space in which each term is spanned by the basis elements that it contains. We prove that the spherical functions of the associated Gelfand pair are nonnegative linear combinations of the ${\mathcal B}_{n,k}$.

Chess tableaux, powers of two and affine Lie algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
Chess tableaux are a special kind of standard Young tableaux where, in the chessboard coloring of the Young diagram, even numbers always appear in white cells and odd numbers in black cells. If, for $λ$ a partition of $n$, $\text{Chess}(λ)$ denotes the number of chess tableaux of shape $λ$, then Chow, Eriksson and Fan observed that $\displaystyle\sum_{λ\vdash n} \text{Chess}(λ)^2$ is divisible by unusually large powers of $2$. In this paper, we give an explanation for this phenomenon, proving a lower bound of $n-O(\sqrt{n})$ for the $2$-adic valuation of this sum and a generalization of it. We do this by exploiting a connection with a certain representation of the affine Lie algebra $\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}_2}$ on the vector space with basis indexed by partitions. Our result about chess tableaux then follows from a study of the basic representation of $\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}_2}$ with coefficients taken from the ring of rational numbers with odd denominators.

Cyclic descents, matchings and Schur-positivity
Published • View Publication • BIB
A new descent set statistic on involutions, defined geometrically via their interpretation as matchings, is introduced in this paper, and shown to be equi-distributed with the standard one. This concept is then applied to construct explicit cyclic descent extensions on involutions, standard Young tableaux and Motzkin paths. Schur-positivity of the associated quasisymmetric functions follows.

Maximal chain descent orders
This paper introduces a partial order on the maximal chains of any finite bounded poset $P$ which has a CL-labeling $λ$. We call this the maximal chain descent order induced by $λ$, denoted $P_λ(2)$. As a first example, letting $P$ be the Boolean lattice and $λ$ its standard EL-labeling gives $P_λ(2)$ isomorphic to the weak order of type A. We discuss in depth other seemingly well-structured examples: the max-min EL-labeling of the partition lattice gives maximal chain descent order isomorphic to a partial order on certain labeled trees, and particular cases of the linear extension EL-labelings of finite distributive lattices produce maximal chain descent orders isomorphic to partial orders on standard Young tableaux. We observe that the order relations which one might expect to be the cover relations, those given by the "polygon moves" whose transitive closure defines the maximal chain descent order, are not always cover relations. Several examples illustrate this fact. Nonetheless, we characterize the EL-labelings for which every polygon move gives a cover relation, and we prove many well known EL-labelings do have the expected cover relations. One motivation for $P_λ(2)$ is that its linear extensions give all of the shellings of the order complex of $P$ whose restriction maps are defined by the descents with respect to $λ$. This yields strictly more shellings of $P$ than the lexicographic ones induced by $λ$. Thus, the maximal chain descent order $P_λ(2)$ might be thought of as encoding the structure of the set of shellings induced by $λ$.
