Canon Permutation Posets
A permutation of the multiset $\{1^m,2^m,\dots,n^m\}$ is a canon permutation if the subsequence formed by the $j$th copy of each element of $[n]:=\{1,2,\dots,n\}$ is identical for all $j\in[m]$. Canon permutations were introduced by Elizalde and are motivated by pattern-avoiding concepts such as (quasi-)Stirling permutations. He proved that the descent polynomial of canon permutations exhibits a surprising product structure; as a further consequence, it is palindromic. Our goal is to understand canon permutations from the viewpoint of Stanley's $(P,ω)$-partitions, along the way generalizing Elizalde's definition and results. We start with a labeled poset $P$ and extend it in a natural way to canon labelings of the product poset $P \times [n]$. The resulting descent polynomial has a product structure which arises naturally from the theory of $(P,ω)$-partitions and simplifies existing proofs. When $P$ is graded, this theory also implies palindromicity. We include results on weak descent polynomials, an amphibian construction between canon permutations and multiset permutations, giving rise to dissonant canon permutations, as well as $γ$-positivity and interpretations of descent polynomials of canon permutations.

Avoiding patterns with three distinct letters in Canon permutations
We study avoidance of patterns of length $3$ with three distinct letters in canon permutations. We reduce the problem to studying pattern avoidance in lattice words and show that there are $6$ such pattern avoiding classes. This shows that there are $12$ classes for the original Canon permutation pattern avoidance problem. We also give descent refinements for these classes and classify the patterns for which the descent enumeration gives palindromic and $γ$-positive polynomials. When the polynomials are $γ$-positive, we explain the $γ$-positivity through a group action analogous to Foata-Strehl valley hopping. Additionally, we study the avoidance of patterns in the relabelling orbit of $1213, 12112, 1231$ after a conjecture about their cardinalities by Laudone and give bijective proofs for the results.

Pattern avoidance in canon permutations
A canon permutation is a $k$-regular word over $[n]$ in which, for each $j$, the $j$-th copies of the letters form the same permutation $σ$. These were introduced by Elizalde as a generalization of nonnesting multipermutations, which are the case $k = 2$. We study classical pattern avoidance in them for arbitrary $k$. We show that avoiding any one of $112$, $122$, $211$ or $221$ is counted by the $k$-Catalan numbers $\frac{1}{n}\binom{kn}{n-1}$. We enumerate the classes obtained by forbidding one of these together with any $τ\in \mathcal{S}_3$, and we give a bijection with $k$-ary trees that we use to generalize a theorem of Gabriel, Peske, Pudwell and Tay. We then show that avoiding a set of patterns closed under relabeling reduces, up to a factor of $n!$, to avoidance in $k$-regular lattice words. We use this to enumerate the canon permutations avoiding some natural generalizations of the nonnesting and noncrossing patterns, as well as the family $\{1^a21^b, 2^a12^b\}$. We close with several conjectures and questions.

How to bounce your canon permutation
We study a new class of palindromic descent polynomials. Given a Dyck path $d$ of semilength $n$ and a permutation $σ$ of size $n$, one can label the up-steps and down-steps of $d$ with the elements of $σ$. The labeled Dyck path determines a multiset permutation called a canon (or nonnesting) permutation. Such permutations arise as linear extensions of posets and as regions of hyperplane arrangements. Elizalde showed that the descent polynomial for all canon permutations of fixed length factors as a product of an Eulerian and a Narayana polynomial. We refine these polynomials by associating to $d$ a descent polynomial $C_d$ over the canon permutations obtained from $d$. We prove that $C_d$ is palindromic and free of internal zeros, though not unimodal in general. Its degree is determined by the number of peaks in the bounce path of $d$. We establish a correspondence between canon permutations attaining the maximum number of descents and Dyck paths below $d$ in the Dyck lattice satisfying a valley condition. Each such path contributes a number of maximizers equal to the number of linear extensions of an associated poset, yielding a combinatorial interpretation of the leading coefficient of $C_d$.

Symmetry of ascent and descent distributions on rectangular and staircase tableaux
We give direct bijective proofs of the symmetry of the distributions of the number of ascents and descents over standard Young tableaux of shape $λ$, where $λ$ is a rectangle $(n,n,\dots,n)$ or a truncated staircase $(n,n-1,\dots,n-k+1)$. These can be viewed as instances of the more general symmetry of the distribution of descents over linear extensions of graded posets, for which previous proofs by Stanley and Farley were based on the theory of $P$-partitions and the involution principle, respectively. In the case of two-row rectangles $(n,n)$, our bijection is equivalent to the Lalanne--Kreweras involution on Dyck paths, which bijectively proves the symmetry of the Narayana numbers. Our bijections are defined in terms of certain arrow encodings of standard Young tableaux. This setup allows us to construct other statistic-preserving involutions on tableaux of rectangular shape, providing a simple proof of the fact that ascents and descents are equidistributed up to a shift, and proving a conjecture of Sulanke about certain statistics in the case of three rows. Finally, we use our bijections to define a possible notion of rowmotion on standard Young tableaux of rectangular shape, and to give a bijective proof of the symmetry of the number of descents on canon permutations, which have been recently studied as a variation of Stirling and quasi-Stirling permutations.

Canon permutations and generalized descents of standard Young tableaux
Published • View Publication • BIB
Canon permutations are permutations of the multiset having $k$ copies of each integer between $1$ and $n$, with the property that the subsequences obtained by taking the $j$th copy of each entry, for each fixed $j$, are all the same. For $k=2$, canon permutations are sometimes called nonnesting permutations, and it is known that the polynomial that enumerates them by the number of descents factors as a product of an Eulerian polynomial and a Narayana polynomial. We extend this result to arbitrary $k$, and we relate the problem to the enumeration of standard Young tableaux of rectangular shape with respect to generalized descent statistics. Our proof is bijective, and it also settles a conjecture of Sulanke about the distribution of certain lattice path statistics.
