Further results for classical and universal characters twisted by roots of unity
Published • View Publication • BIB
We revisit factorizations of classical characters under various specializations, some old and some new. We first show that all characters of classical families of groups twisted by odd powers of an even primitive root of unity factorize into products of characters of smaller groups. Motivated by conjectures of Wagh and Prasad (Manuscr. Math. 2020), we then observe that certain specializations of Schur polynomials factor into products of two characters of other groups. We next show, via a detour through hook Schur polynomials, that certain Schur polynomials indexed by staircase shapes factorize into linear pieces. Lastly, we consider classical and universal characters specialized at roots of unity. One of our results, in parallel with Schur polynomials, is that universal characters take values only in $\{0, \pm 1, \pm 2\}$ at roots of unity.
Cauchy identities for staircase matrices
Published • View Publication • BIB
The celebrated Cauchy identity expresses the product of terms $(1 - x_i y_j)^{-1}$ for $(i,j)$ indexing entries of a rectangular $m\times n$-matrix as a sum over partitions $λ$ of products of Schur polynomials: $s_λ(x)s_λ(y)$. Algebraically, this identity comes from the decomposition of the symmetric algebra of the space of rectangular matrices, considered as a $\mathfrak{gl}_m$-$\mathfrak{gl}_n$-bi-module. We generalize the Cauchy decomposition by replacing rectangular matrices with arbitrary staircase-shaped matrices equipped with the left and right actions of the Borel upper-triangular subalgebras. For any given staircase shape $\mathsf{Y}$ we describe left and right "standard" filtrations on the symmetric algebra of the space of shape $\mathsf{Y}$ matrices. We show that the subquotients of these filtrations are tensor products of Demazure and opposite van der Kallen modules over the Borel subalgebras. On the level of characters, we derive three distinct expansions for the product $(1 - x_i y_j)^{-1}$ for $(i,j) \in \mathsf{Y}$. The first two expansions are sums of products of key polynomials $κ_λ(x)$ and (opposite) Demazure atoms $a^μ(y)$. The third expansion is an alternating sum of products of key polynomials $κ_λ(x)\,κ^μ(y)$.

Further results on staircase graph words
Staircase words are words in which consecutive letters do not differ by more than $1$. We generalize this by extending the restriction to letters lying further apart from each other and obtain the corresponding generating functions, which we express in terms of the Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind.

On the theory of Lucas coloring
In this paper, we introduce the notion of "$Lucas-Coloring$" associated with a planar graph $g$. When $g$ is a $4$-regular, the enumeration of $Lucas-Coloring$ has an interesting interpretation. Specifically, it yields a numerical invariant of the associated Khovanov-Lee complex of any link diagram $D$ whose projection is equal to $g$. This complex resides in the Karoubi envelope of Bar-Natan's formal cobordism category, $Cob^{3}_{/l}$ . The Karoubi envelope of $Cob^{3}_{/l}$ was introduced by Bar-Natan and Morrison to provide a conceptual proof of Lee's theorem. As an application of "Lucas-Coloring", we first show how the Alternating Sign Matrices can be retrieved as a special case of $Lucas-Coloring$. Next, we show a certain statistic on the $Lucas-Coloring$ enumerates the perfect matchings of a canonically defined graph on $g$. This construction allowed us to derive a summation formula of the enumeration of lozenge tilings of the region constructed out of a regular hexagon by removing the "maximal staircase" from its alternating corners in terms of powers of $2$. This formula is reminiscent of the celebrated Aztec Diamond Theorem of Elkies, Kuperberg, Larsen, and Propp, which concerns domino tilings of Aztec Diamonds.

A "Staircase" formula for the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson cycle of a matroid
We provide a formula for the Poincaré dual of the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson (CSM) cycle of a matroid in the Chow ring of the matroid. We derive the formula from the case of matroids realizable over the complex numbers and prove that it satisfies a contraction-deletion formula. From this fact, we prove it holds for all matroids, confirming a conjecture of Fife and Rincón.

Non-Stabilizing Parallel Chip-Firing Games
Published • View Publication • BIB
In 2010, Kominers and Kominers proved that any parallel chip-firing game on $G(V,\,E)$ with $|σ|\geq 4|E|-|V|$ chips stabilizes. Recently, Bu, Choi, and Xu made the bound exact: all games with $|σ|< |E|$ chips or $|σ|> 3|E|-|V|$ chips stabilize. Meanwhile, Levine found a "devil's staircase'' pattern in the plot of the activity of parallel chip-firing games against their density of chips. The stabilizing bound of Bu, Choi, and Xu corresponds to the top and bottom stairs of this staircase, in which the activity is 1 and 0, respectively. In this paper, we analyze the middle stair of the staircase, corresponding to activity $\frac{1}{2}$. We prove that all parallel chip-firing games with $2|E|-|V|< |σ|< 2|E|$ have period $T\neq 3,\,4$. In fact, this is exactly the range of $|σ|$ for which all games are non-stabilizing. We conjecture that all parallel chip-firing games with $2|E|-|V|< |σ|<2|E|$ have $T=2$ and thus activity $\frac{1}{2}$. This conjecture has been proven for trees by Bu, Choi, and Xu, cycles by Dall'asta, and complete graphs by Levine. We extend Levine's method of conjugate configurations to prove the conjecture on complete bipartite graphs $K_{a,a}$.

Ungar Games on the Young-Fibonacci and the Shifted Staircase Lattices
In 2023, Defant and Li introduced the Ungar move, which sends an element $v$ of a finite meet-semilattice $L$ to the meet of some subset of the elements covered by $v$. More recently, Defant, Kravitz, and Williams introduced the Ungar game on $L$, in which two players take turns making Ungar moves starting from an element of $L$ until the player that cannot make a nontrivial Ungar move loses. In this note, we settle two conjectures by Defant, Kravitz, and Williams on the Ungar games on the Young-Fibonacci lattice and the lattices of the order ideals of shifted staircases.
Combined matrices of almost strictly sign regular matrices
Published • View Publication • BIB
The combined matrix is a very useful concept for many applications. Almost strictly sign regular (ASSR) matrices form an important structured class of matrices with two possible zero patterns, which are either type-I staircase or type-II staircase. We prove that, under an irreducibility condition, the pattern of zero and nonzero entries of an ASSR matrix is preserved by the corresponding combined matrix. Without the irreducibility condition, it is proved that type-I and type-II staircases are still preserved. Illustrative numerical examples are included.

Rhombic staircase tableaux and Koornwinder polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this article we give a combinatorial formula for a certain class of Koornwinder polynomials, also known as Macdonald polynomials of type $\tilde{C}$. In particular, we give a combinatorial formula for the Koornwinder polynomials $K_λ = K_λ(z_1,\dots,z_N; a,b,c,d; q,t)$, where $λ= (1,\dots,1,0,\dots,0)$. We also give combinatorial formulas for all ``open boundary ASEP polynomials'' $F_μ$, where $μ$ is a composition in $\{-1,0,1\}^N$; these polynomials are related to the nonsymmetric Koornwinder polynomials $E_μ$ up to a triangular change of basis. Our formulas are in terms of rhombic staircase tableaux, certain tableaux that we introduced in previous work to give a formula for the stationary distribution of the two-species asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) on a line with open boundaries.

Staircase graph words
Published • View Publication • BIB
Generalizing the notion of staircase words, introduced by Knopfmacher et.\ al, we define staircase graph words. These are functions $w$ from the vertex set $V$ of a graph into the set $\{1,2,\ldots,k\}$, such that $|w(x)-w(y)|\leq 1$, for every adjacent $x,y\in V$. We find the explicit generating functions for the number of staircase graph words for the grid graph, the rectangle-triangular graph and the king's graph, all of size $2\times n$.

On The Toric Ideals of the Coloured Graphs of Reduced Words
We study a family $\mathcal{B}$ of pseudo-multipartite graphs indexed by staircase partitions. They are realised from the reduced words of certain class of permutations. We investigate the vertex proper colouring of these graphs and give the general chromatic polynomial. For each member $B_λ$, we construct an affine toric ideal $\mathcal{I}_{B_λ}$ associated to vertex proper colouring using partition identity. It turns out that the projective version $\mathcal{V}(\mathcal{I}_{B_λ})$ is realised from the cartoon diagram associated with the vertex proper colouring.
The Six-Vertex Model with a Non-Standard Boundary Condition
We consider the enumeration of states in the Brubaker-Bump-Friedberg six-vertex model, whose boundary conditions are determined by an integer partition. In general, we find the number of states is a polynomial in the largest part of the partition. By explicating this technique, we also enumerate the states completely for hook shapes and staircases.

A new presentation for Specht modules with distinct parts
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 31(4) (2024), #P4.41 • View Publication • BIB
We obtain a new presentation for Specht modules whose conjugate shapes have strictly decreasing parts by introducing a linear operator on the space generated by column tabloids. The generators of the presentation are column tabloids and the relations form a proper subset of the Garnir relations of Fulton. The results in this paper extend earlier results of the authors and Stanley on Specht modules of staircase shape.

Combinatorial Interpretations of $q$-Fibonacci Numbers and Their Binomial Analogues
The Fibonomial coefficients are well-known analogues of the classical binomial coefficients. In 2009, Sagan and Savage introduced a combinatorial interpretation for these coefficients, based on tiling a rectangular grid. More recently, Bergeron extended this work by providing a similar interpretation for the q-Fibonomial coefficients, using weighted tilings of a rectangular grid. Inspired by Bennett's model, Bergeron also developed a staircase tiling model for the q-Fibonomial coefficients. While Bergeron's proofs for the rectangular grid model relied on induction, and the staircase model on bijective correspondences with the rectangular grid model, these approaches lacked deeper structural insights. In this paper, we propose a novel model for the q-Fibonacci numbers that generalizes Bergeron's approach. This new model not only enables us to prove several identities related to q-Fibonacci numbers but also provides a non-bijective proof for the staircase model of the q-Fibonomial coefficients, offering greater structural clarity. Additionally, we demonstrate new identities involving the q-Fibonomial coefficients using this refined rectangular grid model, further enhancing the combinatorial understanding of these mathematical objects.

Universality of global asymptotics of Jack-deformed random Young diagrams at varying temperatures
Published in Ann. Probab. 54(1): 421-488, 2026 • View Publication • BIB
This paper establishes universal formulas describing the global asymptotics of two distinct discrete versions of $β$-ensembles in the high, low and fixed temperature regimes. Our results affirmatively answer a question posed by the second author and Śniady. We first introduce a special class of Jack measures on Young diagrams of arbitrary size, called the ``Jack--Thoma measures'', and prove the LLN and CLT in the three aforementioned limit regimes. In each case, we provide explicit formulas for polynomial observables of the limit shape and Gaussian fluctuations around the limit shape. These formulas have surprising positivity properties and are expressed as sums of weighted lattice paths. Second, we show that the previous formulas are universal: they also describe the limit shape and Gaussian fluctuations for the model of random Young diagrams of a fixed size derived from Jack characters with the approximate factorization property. Finally, in stark contrast with continuous $β$-ensembles, we show that the limit shapes at high and low temperatures of our random Young diagrams are one-sided infinite staircase shapes. For the Jack--Plancherel measure, we describe this shape explicitly by relating its local minima with the zeroes of Bessel functions.

Multislant matrices and Jacobi--Trudi determinants over finite fields
Published in Finite Fields and Their Applications 91, October 2023, 102262 • View Publication • BIB
The problem of counting the $\mathbb{F}_q$-valued points of a variety has been well-studied from algebro-geometric, topological, and combinatorial perspectives. We explore a combinatorially flavored version of this problem studied by Anzis et al. (2018), which is similar to work of Kontsevich, Elkies, and Haglund. Anzis et al. considered the question: what is the probability that the determinant of a Jacobi-Trudi matrix vanishes if the variables are chosen uniformly at random from a finite field? They gave a formula for various partitions such as hooks, staircases, and rectangles. We give a formula for partitions whose parts form an arithmetic progression, verifying and generalizing one of their conjectures. More generally, we compute the probability of the determinant vanishing for a class of matrices (``multislant matrices'') made of Toeplitz blocks with certain properties. We furthermore show that the determinant of a skew Jacobi-Trudi matrix is equidistributed across the finite field if the skew partition is a ribbon.

Maximal degree subposets of $ν$-Tamari lattices
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we study two different subposets of the $ν$-Tamari lattice: one in which all elements have maximal in-degree and one in which all elements have maximal out-degree. The maximal in-degree and maximal out-degree of a $ν$-Dyck path turns out to be the size of the maximal staircase shape path that fits weakly above $ν$. For $m$-Dyck paths of height $n$, we further show that the maximal out-degree poset is poset isomorphic to the $ν$-Tamari lattice of $(m-1)$-Dyck paths of height $n$, and the maximal in-degree poset is poset isomorphic to the $(m-1)$-Dyck paths of height $n$ together with a greedy order. We show these two isomorphisms and give some properties on $ν$-Tamari lattices along the way.

A Tensor-Cube Version of the Saxl Conjecture
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $n$ be a positive integer, and let $ρ_n = (n, n-1, n-2, \ldots, 1)$ be the ``staircase'' partition of size $N = {n+1 \choose 2}$. The Saxl conjecture asserts that every irreducible representation $S^λ$ of the symmetric group $S_N$ appears as a subrepresentation of the tensor square $S^{ρ_n} \otimes S^{ρ_n}$. In this short note we show that every irreducible representation of $S_N$ appears in the tensor cube $S^{ρ_n} \otimes S^{ρ_n} \otimes S^{ρ_n}$.
Hook length and symplectic content in partitions
Published • View Publication • BIB
The dimension of an irreducible representation of $GL(n,\mathbb{C})$, $Sp(2n)$, or $SO(n)$ is given by the respective hook-length and content formulas for the corresponding partition. The first author, inspired by the Nekrasov-Okounkov formula, conjectured combinatorial interpretations of analogous expressions involving hook-lengths and symplectic/orthogonal contents. We prove special cases of these conjectures. In the process, we show that partitions of $n$ with all symplectic contents non-zero are equinumerous with partitions of $n$ into distinct even parts. We also present Beck-type companions to this identity. In this context, we give the parity of the number of partitions into distinct parts with odd (respectively, even) rank. We study the connection between the sum of hook-lengths and the sum of inversions in the binary representation of a partition. In addition, we introduce a new partition statistic, the $x$-ray list of a partition, and explore its connection with distinct partitions as well as partitions maximally contained in a given staircase partition.

The Bruhat Order on Symmetric Groups via Intrinsic Coverings of Compositions
Lehmer's code defines a bijection between the symmetric group and the set of staircase compositions. In this paper, we characterize a poset structure on these compositions that is equivalent to the strong Bruhat order on the symmetric group. This construction is intrinsic and does not require any reference to the associated permutations.
