Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials and drift configurations

The coefficients of the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials $P_{v,w}(q)$ are nonnegative integers that are upper semicontinuous on Bruhat order. Conjecturally, the same properties hold for $h$-polynomials $H_{v,w}(q)$ of local rings of Schubert varieties. This suggests a parallel between the two families of polynomials. We prove our conjectures for Grassmannians, and more generally, covexillary Schubert varieties in complete flag varieties, by deriving a combinatorial formula for $H_{v,w}(q)$. We introduce \emph{drift configurations} to formulate a new and compatible combinatorial rule for $P_{v,w}(q)$. From our rules we deduce, for these cases, the coefficient-wise inequality $P_{v,w}(q)\preceq H_{v,w}(q)$.
Pieri rules for the K-theory of cominuscule Grassmannians

We prove Pieri formulas for the multiplication with special Schubert classes in the K-theory of all cominuscule Grassmannians. For Grassmannians of type A this gives a new proof of a formula of Lenart. Our formula is new for Lagrangian Grassmannians, and for orthogonal Grassmannians it proves a special case of a conjectural Littlewood-Richardson rule of Thomas and Yong. Recent work of Thomas and Yong and of E. Clifford has shown that the full Littlewood-Richardson rule for orthogonal Grassmannians follows from the Pieri case proved here. We describe the K-theoretic Pieri coefficients both as integers determined by positive recursive identities and as the number of certain tableaux. The proof is based on a computation of the sheaf Euler characteristic of triple intersections of Schubert varieties, where at least one Schubert variety is special.

Affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties can be thought of as affine analogs of classical Deligne-Lusztig varieties, or Frobenius-twisted analogs of Schubert varieties. We provide a method for proving a non-emptiness statement for affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties inside the affine flag variety associated to affine Weyl group elements satisfying a certain length additivity hypothesis. In particular, we prove that non-emptiness holds whenever it is conjectured to do so for alcoves in the shrunken dominant Weyl chamber, providing a partial converse to the emptiness results of Goertz, Haines, Kottwitz, and Reuman. Our technique involves the work of Geck and Pfeiffer on cuspidal conjugacy classes, in addition to an analysis of the combinatorics of certain fully commutative elements in the finite Weyl group.
A unification of permutation patterns related to Schubert varieties
We obtain new connections between permutation patterns and singularities of Schubert varieties, by giving a new characterization of Gorenstein varieties in terms of so called bivincular patterns. These are generalizations of classical patterns where conditions are placed on the location of an occurrence in a permutation, as well as on the values in the occurrence. This clarifies what happens when the requirement of smoothness is weakened to factoriality and further to Gorensteinness, extending work of Bousquet-Melou and Butler (2007), and Woo and Yong (2006). We also show how mesh patterns, introduced by Branden and Claesson (2011), subsume many other types of patterns and define an extension of them called marked mesh patterns. We use these new patterns to further simplify the description of Gorenstein Schubert varieties and give a new description of Schubert varieties that are defined by inclusions, introduced by Gasharov and Reiner (2002). We also give a description of 123-hexagon avoiding permutations, introduced by Billey and Warrington (2001), Dumont permutations and cycles in terms of marked mesh patterns.

We study Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity for points of Schubert varieties in the complete flag variety, by Groebner degenerations of the Kazhdan-Lusztig ideal. In the covexillary case, we give a positive combinatorial rule for multiplicity by establishing (with a Groebner basis) a reduced and equidimensional limit whose Stanley-Reisner simplicial complex is homeomorphic to a shellable ball or sphere. We show that multiplicity counts the number of facets of this complex. We also obtain a formula for the Hilbert series of the local ring. In particular, our work gives a multiplicity rule for Grassmannian Schubert varieties, providing alternative statements and proofs to formulae of [Lakshmibai-Weyman '90], [Rosenthal-Zelevinsky '01], [Krattenthaler '01], [Kreiman-Lakshmibai '04] and [Woo-Yong '09]. We suggest extensions of our methodology to the general case.
The Brauer loop scheme and orbital varieties

A. Joseph invented multidegrees in [Jo84] to study orbital varieties, which are the components of an orbital scheme, itself constructed by intersecting a nilpotent orbit with a Borel subalgebra. Their multidegrees, known as Joseph polynomials, give a basis of a (Springer) representation of the Weyl group. In the case of the nilpotent orbit $\{ M^2=0 \}$, the orbital varieties can be indexed by noncrossing chord diagrams in the disc. In this paper we study the normal cone to the orbital scheme inside this nilpotent orbit $\{ M^2 = 0 \}$. This gives a better-motivated construction of the Brauer loop scheme we introduced in [KZJ07], whose components are indexed by all chord diagrams (now possibly with crossings) in the disc. The multidegrees of its components, the Brauer loop varieties, were shown to reproduce the ground state of the Brauer loop model in statistical mechanics [DFZJ06]. Here, we reformulate and slightly generalize these multidegrees in order to express them as solutions of the rational quantum Knizhnik--Zamolodchikov equation associated to the Brauer algebra. In particular, the vector of the multidegrees satisfies two sets of equations, corresponding to the $e_i$ and $f_i$ generators of the Brauer algebra. We describe here the geometric meaning of both $e_i$ and $f_i$ equations in our slightly extended setting. We also describe the corresponding actions at the level of orbital varieties: while only the $e_i$ equations make sense directly on the Joseph polynomials, the $f_i$ equations also appear if one introduces a broader class of varieties. We explain the connection of the latter with matrix Schubert varieties.
Initial ideals of tangent cones to Richardson varieties in the Orthogonal Grassmannian via a Orthogonal-Bounded-RSK-Correspondence

A Richardson variety $X_\ga^\gc$ in the Orthogonal Grassmannian is defined to be the intersection of a Schubert variety $X^\gc$ in the Orthogonal Grassmannian and a opposite Schubert variety $X_\ga$ therein. We give an explicit description of the initial ideal (with respect to certain conveniently chosen term order) for the ideal of the tangent cone at any $T$-fixed point of $X_\ga^\gc$, thus generalizing a result of Raghavan-Upadhyay \cite{Ra-Up2}. Our proof is based on a generalization of the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth (RSK) correspondence, which we call the Orthogonal bounded RSK (OBRSK). The OBRSK correspondence will give a degree-preserving bijection between a set of monomials defined by the initial ideal of the ideal of the tangent cone (as mentioned above) and a `standard monomial basis'. A similar work for Richardson varieties in the ordinary Grassmannian was done by Kreiman in \cite{Kr-bkrs}.
A Gröbner basis for Kazhdan-Lusztig ideals

Kazhdan-Lusztig ideals, a family of generalized determinantal ideals investigated in [Woo-Yong '08], provide an explicit choice of coordinates and equations encoding a neighbourhood of a torus-fixed point of a Schubert variety on a type A flag variety. Our main result is a Grobner basis for these ideals. This provides a single geometric setting to transparently explain the naturality of pipe dreams on the Rothe diagram of a permutation, and their appearance in:
* combinatorial formulas [Fomin-Kirillov '94] for Schubert and Grothendieck polynomials of [Lascoux-Schutzenberger '82];
* the equivariant K-theory specialization formula of [Buch-Rimanyi '04]; and
* a positive combinatorial formula for multiplicities of Schubert varieties in good cases, including those for which the associated Kazhdan-Lusztig ideal is homogeneous under the standard grading.
Our results generalize (with alternate proofs) [Knutson-Miller '05]'s Grobner basis theorem for Schubert determinantal ideals and their geometric interpretation of the monomial positivity of Schubert polynomials. We also complement recent work of [Knutson '08,'09] on degenerations of Kazhdan-Lusztig varieties in general Lie type, as well as work of [Goldin '01] on equivariant localization and of [Lakshmibai-Weyman '90], [Rosenthal-Zelevinsky '01], and [Krattenthaler '01] on Grassmannian multiplicity formulas.
Criteria for rational smoothness of some symmetric orbit closures

Let $G$ be a connected reductive linear algebraic group over $\C$ with an involution $θ$. Denote by $K$ the subgroup of fixed points. In certain cases, the $K$-orbits in the flag variety $G/B$ are indexed by the twisted identities $\iot = \{θ(w^{-1})w\mid w\in W\}$ in the Weyl group $W$. Under this assumption, we establish a criterion for rational smoothness of orbit closures which generalises classical results of Carrell and Peterson for Schubert varieties. That is, whether an orbit closure is rationally smooth at a given point can be determined by examining the degrees in a ``Bruhat graph'' whose vertices form a subset of $\iot$. Moreover, an orbit closure is rationally smooth everywhere if and only if its corresponding interval in the Bruhat order on $\iot$ is rank symmetric.
In the special case $K=\Sp_{2n}(\C)$, $G=\SL_{2n}(\C)$, we strengthen our criterion by showing that only the degree of a single vertex, the ``bottom one'', needs to be examined. This generalises a result of Deodhar for type $A$ Schubert varieties.
A $q$-analogue of the FKG inequality and some applications
Let $L$ be a finite distributive lattice and $μ: L \to {\mathbb R}^{+}$ a log-supermodular function. For functions $k: L \to {\mathbb R}^{+}$ let $$E_μ (k; q) \defeq \sum_{x\in L} k(x) μ(x) q^{{\mathrm rank}(x)} \in {\mathbb R}^{+}[q].$$ We prove for any pair $g,h: L\to {\mathbb R}^{+}$ of monotonely increasing functions, that $$E_μ (g; q)\cdot E_μ (h; q) \ll
E_μ (1; q)\cdot E_μ (gh; q), $$ where ``$ \ll $'' denotes coefficientwise inequality of real polynomials. The FKG inequality of Fortuin, Kasteleyn and Ginibre (1971) is the real number inequality obtained by specializing to $q=1$.
The polynomial FKG inequality has applications to $f$-vectors of joins and intersections of simplicial complexes, to Betti numbers of intersections of certain Schubert varieties, and to the following kind of correlation inequality for power series weighted by Young tableaux. Let $Y$ be the set of all integer partitions. Given functions $k, μ: Y \rarr \R^+$, and parameters $0\le s\le t$, define the formal power series $$F_μ(k ; z) \defeq \sum_{\la\in Y} k(\la) μ(\la) (f_{\la})^t \frac{z^{|\la|}}{(|\la| !)^s} \in \R^+ [[z]], $$ %\sum_{\la\in Y} k(\la) μ(\la) (f_{\la})^t \frac{z^{|\la|}}{|\la| !} \in \R^+ [[z]],$$ where $f_{\la}$ is the number of standard Young tableaux of shape $\la$. Assume that $μ: Y\rarr \R^+$ is log-supermodular, and that $g, h: Y \rarr \R^+$ are monotonely increasing with respect to containment order of partition shapes. Then $$F_μ(g;z) \cdot F_μ(h;z) \ll F_μ(1;z) \cdot F_μ(gh;z). $$

We extend the short presentation due to [Borel '53] of the cohomology ring of a generalized flag manifold to a relatively short presentation of the cohomology of any of its Schubert varieties. Our result is stated in a root-system uniform manner by introducing the essential set of a Coxeter group element, generalizing and giving a new characterization of [Fulton '92]'s definition for permutations. Further refinements are obtained in type A.

It is known that the eigenvalues of selfadjoint elements a,b,c with a+b+c=0 in the factor R^omega (ultrapower of the hyperfinite II1 factor) are characterized by a system of inequalities analogous to the classical Horn inequalities of linear algebra. We prove that these inequalities are in fact true for elements of an arbitrary finite factor. A matricial (`complete') form of this result is equivalent to an embedding question formulated by Connes.

We discuss the problem of determining the complete weight hierarchy of linear error correcting codes associated to Grassmann varieties and, more generally, to Schubert varieties in Grassmannians. The problem is partially solved in the case of Grassmann codes, and one of the solutions uses the combinatorial notion of a closed family. We propose a generalization of this to what is called a subclose family. A number of properties of subclose families are proved, and its connection with the notion of threshold graphs and graphs with maximum sum of squares of vertex degrees is outlined.

We give a bijection between certain colored partitions and the elements in the quotient of an affine Weyl group modulo its Weyl group. By Bott's formula these colored partitions give rise to some partition identities. In certain types, these identities have previously appeared in the work of Bousquet-Melou-Eriksson, Eriksson-Eriksson and Reiner. In other types the identities appear to be new. For type $A_{n}$, the affine colored partitions form another family of combinatorial objects in bijection with $n+1$-core partitions and $n$-bounded partitions. Our main application is to characterize the rationally smooth Schubert varieties in the affine Grassmannians in terms of affine partitions and a generalization of Young's lattice which refines weak order and is a subposet of Bruhat order. Several of the proofs are computer assisted.

We discuss a characteristic free version of Frobenius splittings for toric varieties and give a polyhedral criterion for a toric variety to be diagonally split. We apply this criterion to show that section rings of nef line bundles on diagonally split toric varieties are normally presented and Koszul, and that Schubert varieties are not diagonally split in general.

We study the intersections of general Schubert varieties X_w with permuted big cells, and give an inductive degeneration of each such "Schubert patch" to a Stanley-Reisner scheme. Similar results had been known for Schubert patches in various types of Grassmannians. We maintain reducedness using the results of [Knutson 2007] on automatically reduced degenerations, or through more standard cohomology-vanishing arguments.
The underlying simplicial complex of the Stanley-Reisner scheme is a subword complex, as introduced for slightly different purposes in [Knutson-Miller 2004], and is homeomorphic to a ball. This gives a new proof of the Andersen-Jantzen-Soergel/Billey and Graham/Willems formulae for restrictions of equivariant Schubert classes to fixed points.

Let G be a simply-connected simple compact Lie group over the complex numbers. The affine Grassmannian is a projective ind-variety, homotopy-equivalent to the loop space of G and closely analogous to a maximal flag variety of the classical Grassmannian manifold. It has a Schubert cell decomposition indexed by the coroot lattice or equivalently by the minimal length coset representatives for the affine Weyl group modulo the Weyl group for G. The closure of an affine Schubert cell is a finite dimensional projective variety that we call an affine Schubert variety. In this paper we completely determine the smooth and palindromic (rationally smooth) affine Schubert varieties.

We compute the initial ideals, with respect to certain conveniently chosen term orders, of ideals of tangent cones at torus fixed points to Schubert varieties in orthogonal Grassmannians. The initial ideals turn out to be square-free monomial ideals and therefore Stanley-Reisner face rings of simplicial complexes. We describe these complexes. The maximal faces of these complexes encode certain sets of non-intersecting lattice paths.

The aim of this article is to link Schubert varieties in the flag manifold with hyperplane arrangements. For a permutation, we construct a certain graphical hyperplane arrangement. We show that the generating function for regions of this arrangement coincides with the Poincare polynomial of the corresponding Schubert variety if and only if the Schubert variety is smooth. We give an explicit combinatorial formula for the Poincare polynomial. Our main technical tools are chordal graphs and perfect elimination orderings.
