Nakajima introduced the morphism of q,t-characters for finite dimensional representation of simply-laced quantum affine algebras : it is a t-deformation of the Frenkel-Reshetikhin's morphism of q-characters (sum of monomials in infinite variables). In math.QA/0212257 we generalized the construction of q,t-characters for non simply-laced quantum affine algebras. First in this paper we prove a conjecture of math.QA/0212257 : the monomials of q and q,t-characters of standard representations are the same in non simply-laced cases (the simply-laced cases were treated by Nakajima) and the coefficients are non negative. In particular these q,t-characters can be considered as t-deformations of q-characters. In the proof we show that for quantum affine algebras of type A, B, C and quantum toroidal algebras of type A^{(1)} the l-weight spaces of fundamental representations are of dimension 1. Eventually we show and use a generalization of results of Frenkel-Reshetikhin, -Mukhin and Nakajima : for general quantum affinizations we prove that the l-weights of a l-highest weight simple module are lower than the highest l-weight in the sense of monomials.

Let $Ω$ be a vector space over a finite field with q elements. Let G denote the general linear group of endomorphisms of $Ω$ and let us consider the left regular representation $ρ: G \to B(L_2(X))$ associated to the natural action of G on the set X of linear subspaces of $Ω$. In this paper we study a natural basis B of the algebra $End_{G}(L_2(X))$ of intertwining maps on $L_2(X)$. By using a Laplacian operator on Grassmann graphs, we identify the kernels in B as solutions of a basic hypergeometric difference equation. This provides two expressions for these kernels. One in terms of the q-Hahn polynomials and the other by means of a Rodrigues type formula. Finally, we obtain a useful product formula for the mappings in B. We give two different proofs. One uses the theory of classical hypergeometric polynomials and the other is supported by a characterization of spherical functions in finite symmetric spaces. Both proofs require the use of certain associated Radon transforms.

We estimate character sums with n!, on average, and individually. These bounds are used to derive new results about various congruences modulo a prime p and obtain new information about the spacings between quadratic nonresidues modulo p. In particular, we show that there exists a positive integer $n\ll p^{1/2+ε}, such that n! is a primitive root modulo p. We also show that every nonzero congruence class a \not \equiv 0 \pmod p can be represented as a product of 7 factorials, a \equiv n_1! ... n_7! \pmod p, where $\max \{n_i | i=1,... 7\}=O(p^{11/12+ε}), and we find the asymptotic formula for the number of such representations. Finally, we show that products of 4 factorials $n_1!n_2!n_3!n_4!, with \max\{n_1, n_2, n_3, n_4\}=O(p^{6/7+ε})$ represent ``almost all''residue classes modulo p, and that products of 3 factorials n_1!n_2!n_3! with \max\{n_1, n_2, n_3\}=O(p^{5/6+ε})$ are uniformly distributed modulo p.
Weak order complexes
The paper presents geometric models for the set WO of weak orders on a finite set. In particulary, WO is modeled as a set of vertices of a cubical subdivision of a permutahedron. This approach is an alternative to the usual representation of WO by means of weak order polytopes.

A Goellnitz-Gordon partition is one in which the parts differ by at least 2, and where the inequality is strict if a part is even. Let Q_i(n) denote the number of partitions of n into distinct parts not congruent to i mod 4. By attaching weights which are powers of 2 and imposing certain parity conditions on Goellnitz-Gordon partitions, we show that these are equinumerous with Q_i(n) for i=0,2. These complement results of Goellnitz on Q_i(n) for i=1,3, and of Alladi who provided a uniform treatment of all four Q_i(n), i=0,1,2,3, in terms of weighted partitions into parts differing by >= 4. Our approach here provides a uniform treatment of all four Q_i(n) in terms of certain double series representations. These double series identities are part of a new infinite hierarchy of multiple series identities.

This paper describes a family of Hecke algebras H_μ=End_G(Ind_U^G(ψ_μ)), where U is the subgroup of unipotent upper-triangular matrices of G=GL_n(F_q) and ψ_μis a linear character of U. The main results combinatorially index a basis of H_μ, provide a large commutative subalgebra of H_μ, and after describing the combinatorics associated with the representation theory of H_μ, generalize the RSK correspondence that is typically found in the representation theory of the symmetric group.
Normal Order: Combinatorial Graphs

A conventional context for supersymmetric problems arises when we consider systems containing both boson and fermion operators. In this note we consider the normal ordering problem for a string of such operators. In the general case, upon which we touch briefly, this problem leads to combinatorial numbers, the so-called Rook numbers. Since we assume that the two species, bosons and fermions, commute, we subsequently restrict ourselves to consideration of a single species, single-mode boson monomials. This problem leads to elegant generalisations of well-known combinatorial numbers, specifically Bell and Stirling numbers. We explicitly give the generating functions for some classes of these numbers. In this note we concentrate on the combinatorial graph approach, showing how some important classical results of graph theory lead to transparent representations of the combinatorial numbers associated with the boson normal ordering problem.

Generalized Hall-Littlewood polynomials (Macdonald spherical functions) and generalized Kostka-Foulkes polynomials ($q$-weight multiplicities) arise in many places in combinatorics, representation theory, geometry, and mathematical physics. This paper attempts to organize the different definitions of these objects and prove the fundamental combinatorial results from ``scratch'', in a presentation which, hopefully, will be accessible and useful for both the nonexpert and researchers currently working in this very active field. The combinatorics of the affine Hecke algebra plays a central role. The final section of this paper can be read independently of the rest of the paper. It presents, with proof, Lascoux and Schützenberger's positive formula for the Kostka-Foulkes poynomials in the type A case.

We study the amoebae (in S. Favorov's sense) of finite systems of exponential sums with real spectra. For generic systems of this type, we give a more effective representation of the amoeba and we prove that the complementary set to the amoeba of a system with r exponential sums is a (r-1)-convexe set.

We introduce a monoid structure on the set of binary search trees, by a process very similar to the construction of the plactic monoid, the Robinson-Schensted insertion being replaced by the binary search tree insertion. This leads to a new construction of the algebra of Planar Binary Trees of Loday-Ronco, defining it in the same way as Non-Commutative Symmetric Functions and Free Symmetric Functions. We briefly explain how the main known properties of the Loday-Ronco algebra can be described and proved with this combinatorial point of view, and then discuss it from a representation theoretical point of view, which in turns leads to new combinatorial properties of binary trees.
A Littlewood-Richardson rule for evaluation representations of quantum affine sl(n)
We give a combinatorial description of the composition factors of the induction product of two evaluation modules of the affine Iwahori-Hecke algebra of type GL(m). Using quantum affine Schur-Weyl duality, this yields a combinatorial description of the composition factors of the tensor product of two evaluation modules of the quantum affine algebra of type sl(n).

It is known that for each combinatorial type of convex 3-dimensional polyhedra, there is a representative with edges tangent to the unit sphere. This representative is unique up to projective transformations that fix the unit sphere.
We show that there is a unique representative (up to congruence) with edges tangent to the unit sphere such that the origin is the barycenter of the points where the edges touch the sphere.

Let X(G) denote the flag complex of a graph G=(V,E) on n vertices. We study relations between the first eigenvalues of successive higher Laplacians of X(G). One consequence is the following result: Let λ_2(G) denote the second smallest eigenvalue of the Laplacian of G. If λ_2(G)> \frac{kn}{k+1} then the real k-th reduced cohomology group H^k(X(G)) is zero. Applications include a lower bound on the homological connectivity of the independent sets complex I(G), in terms of a new graph domination parameter Γ(G) defined via certain vector representations of G. This in turns implies a Hall type theorem for systems of disjoint representatives in hypergraphs.

Using determinant representations for partition functions of the corresponding square ice models and the method proposed recently by one of the authors, we investigate refined enumerations of vertically symmetric alternating-sign matrices, off-diagonally symmetric alternating-sign matrices and alternating-sign matrices with U-turn boundary. For all these cases the explicit formulas for refined enumerations are found. It particular, Kutin-Yuen conjecture is proved.

We consider the transformation properties of integer sequences arising from the normal ordering of exponentiated boson ([a,a*]=1) monomials of the form exp(x (a*)^r a), r=1,2,..., under the composition of their exponential generating functions (egf). They turn out to be of Sheffer-type. We demonstrate that two key properties of these sequences remain preserved under substitutional composition: (a)the property of being the solution of the Stieltjes moment problem; and (b) the representation of these sequences through infinite series (Dobinski-type relations). We present a number of examples of such composition satisfying properties (a) and (b). We obtain new Dobinski-type formulas and solve the associated moment problem for several hierarchically defined combinatorial families of sequences.

Let $Ω$ denote a non-empty finite set. Let $S(Ω)$ stand for the symmetric group on $Ω$ and let us write $P(Ω)$ for the power set of $Ω$. Let $ρ: S(Ω) \to U(L^2(P(Ω)))$ be the left unitary representation of $S(Ω)$ associated with its natural action on $P(Ω)$. We consider the algebra consisting of those endomorphisms of $L^2(P(Ω))$ which commute with the action of $ρ$. We find an attractive basis $B$ for this algebra. We obtain an expression, as a linear combination of $B$, for the product of any two elements of $B$. We obtain an expression, as a linear combination of $B$, for the adjoint of each element of $B$. It turns out the Fourier transform on $P(Ω)$ is an element of our algebra; we give the matrix which represents this transform with respect to $B$.
Short formulas for algebraic covariant derivative curvature tensors via Algebraic Combinatorics
We consider generators of algebraic covariant derivative curvature tensors R' which can be constructed by a Young symmetrization of product tensors W*U or U*W, where W and U are covariant tensors of order 2 and 3. W is a symmetric or alternating tensor whereas U belongs to a class of the infinite set S of irreducible symmetry classes characterized by the partition (2,1). Using Computer Algebra we search for such generators whose coordinate representations are polynomials with a minimal number of summands. For a generic choice of the symmetry class of U we obtain lengths of 16 or 20 summands if W is symmetric or skew-symmetric, respectively. In special cases these numbers can be reduced to the minima 12 or 10. If these minima occur then U admits an index commutation symmetry. Furthermore minimal lengths are possible if U is formed from torsion-free covariant derivatives of symmetric or alternating 2-tensor fields. Foundation of our investigations is a theorem of S. A. Fulling, R. C. King, B. G. Wybourne and C. J. Cummins about a Young symmetrizer that generates the symmetry class of algebraic covariant derivative curvature tensors. Furthermore we apply ideals and idempotents in group rings C[S_r] and discrete Fourier transforms for symmetric groups S_r. For symbolic calculations we used the Mathematica packages Ricci and PERMS.
A Hopf algebra of parking functions
If the moments of a probability measure on $\R$ are interpreted as a specialization of complete homogeneous symmetric functions, its free cumulants are, up to sign, the corresponding specializations of a sequence of Schur positive symmetric functions $(f_n)$. We prove that $(f_n)$ is the Frobenius characteristic of the natural permutation representation of $\SG_n$ on the set of prime parking functions. This observation leads us to the construction of a Hopf algebra of parking functions, which we study in some detail.

For a semisimple Lie algebra g the orbit method attempts to assign representations of g to (coadjoint) orbits in g*. Orbital varieties are particular Lagrangian subvarieties of such orbits leading to highest weight representations of g. In sl(n) orbital varieties are described by Young tableaux. Inclusion relation on orbital variety closures defines a partial order on Young tableaux. Our aim is to describe this order. The paper is devoted to the combinatorial description of induced Duflo order on Young tableaux (the order generated by inclusion of generating subspaces of orbital varieties). This is a very interesting and complex combinatorial question. This is the first paper in the series. In Part II and Part III we use repeatedly the results of the paper as a basis for further study of orbital variety closures.
