The enriched $q$-monomial basis of the quasisymmetric functions

We construct a new family $\left( η_α^{\left( q\right) }\right) _{α\in\operatorname*{Comp}}$ of quasisymmetric functions for each element $q$ of the base ring. We call them the "enriched $q$-monomial quasisymmetric functions". When $r:=q+1$ is invertible, this family is a basis of $\operatorname{QSym}$. It generalizes Hoffman's "essential quasi-symmetric functions" (obtained for $q=0$) and Hsiao's "monomial peak functions" (obtained for $q=1$), but also includes the monomial quasisymmetric functions as a limiting case.
We describe these functions $η_α^{\left( q\right) }$ by several formulas, and compute their products, coproducts and antipodes. The product expansion is given by an exotic variant of the shuffle product which we call the "stufufuffle product" due to its ability to pick several consecutive entries from each composition. This "stufufuffle product" has previously appeared in recent work by Bouillot, Novelli and Thibon, generalizing the "block shuffle product" from the theory of multizeta values.

Duchamp--Hivert--Thibon introduced the construction of a right $H_n(0)$-module, denoted as $M_P$, for any partial order $P$ on the set $[n]$. This module is defined by specifying a suitable action of $H_n(0)$ on the set of linear extensions of $P$. In this paper, we refer to this module as the poset module associated with $P$. Firstly, we show that $\bigoplus_{n \ge 0} G_0(\mathscr{P}(n))$ has a Hopf algebra structure that is isomorphic to the Hopf algebra of quasisymmetric functions, where $\mathscr{P}(n)$ is the full subcategory of $\textbf{mod-}H_n(0)$ whose objects are direct sums of finitely many isomorphic copies of poset modules and $G_0(\mathscr{P}(n))$ is the Grothendieck group of $\mathscr{P}(n)$. We also demonstrate how (anti-)automorphism twists interact with these modules, the induction product and restrictions. Secondly, we investigate the (type 1) quasisymmetric power sum expansion of some quasi-analogues $Y_α$ of Schur functions, where $α$ is a composition. We show that they can be expressed as the sum of the $P$-partition generating functions of specific posets, which allows us to utilize the result established by Liu--Weselcouch. Additionally, we provide a new algorithm for obtaining these posets. Using these findings, for the dual immaculate function and the extended Schur function, we express the coefficients appearing in the quasisymmetric power sum expansions in terms of border strip tableaux.
Characterizing bipartite distance-regularized graphs with vertices of eccentricity 4
The characterization of bipartite distance-regularized graphs, where some vertices have eccentricity less than four, in terms of the incidence structures of which they are incidence graphs, is known. In this paper we prove that there is a one-to-one correspondence between the incidence graphs of quasi-symmetric SPBIBDs with parameters $(v,b,r,k, λ_1,0)$ of type $(k-1,t)$ with intersection numbers $x=0$ and $y>0$, where $0< y\leq t<k$ , and bipartite distance-regularized graphs with $D=D'=4$.
Doubly even self-orthogonal codes from quasi-symmetric designs
In this paper, we give a construction of doubly even self-orthogonal codes from quasi-symmetric designs. Further, we study orbit matrices of quasi-symmetric designs and give a construction of doubly even self-orthogonal codes from orbit matrices of quasi-symmetric designs of Blokhuis-Haemers type.
The Redei--Berge symmetric function of a directed graph
Let $D=\left( V,A\right) $ be a digraph with $n$ vertices, where each arc $a\in A$ is a pair $\left( u,v\right) $ of two vertices. We study the \emph{Redei--Berge symmetric function} $U_{D}$, defined as the quasisymmetric function% \[ \sum L_{\operatorname*{Des}\left( w,D\right) ,\ n}\in\operatorname*{QSym}. \] Here, the sum ranges over all lists $w=\left( w_{1},w_{2},\ldots ,w_{n}\right) $ that contain each vertex of $D$ exactly once, and the corresponding addend is% \[ L_{\operatorname*{Des}\left( w,D\right) ,\ n}:=\sum_{\substack{i_{1}\leq i_{2}\leq\cdots\leq i_{n};\ı_{p}<i_{p+1}\text{ for each }p\text{ satisfying }\left( w_{p},w_{p+1}\right) \in A}}x_{i_{1}}x_{i_{2}}\cdots x_{i_{n}}% \] (an instance of Gessel's fundamental quasisymmetric functions).
While $U_{D}$ is a specialization of Chow's path-cycle symmetric function, which has been studied before, we prove some new formulas that express $U_{D}$ in terms of the power-sum symmetric functions. We show that $U_{D}$ is always $p$-integral, and furthermore is $p$-positive whenever $D$ has no $2$-cycles. When $D$ is a tournament, $U_{D}$ can be written as a polynomial in $p_{1},2p_{3},2p_{5},2p_{7},\ldots$ with nonnegative integer coefficients. By specializing these results, we obtain the famous theorems of Redei and Berge on the number of Hamiltonian paths in digraphs and tournaments, as well as a modulo-$4$ refinement of Redei's theorem.

The kernel $\mathcal{K}^{\operatorname{st}}$ of a descent statistic $\operatorname{st}$, introduced by Grinberg, is a subspace of the algebra $\operatorname{QSym}$ of quasisymmetric functions defined in terms of $\operatorname{st}$-equivalent compositions, and is an ideal of $\operatorname{QSym}$ if and only if $\operatorname{st}$ is shuffle-compatible. This paper continues the study of kernels of descent statistics, with emphasis on the peak set $\operatorname{Pk}$ and the peak number $\operatorname{pk}$. The kernel $\mathcal{K}^{\operatorname{Pk}}$ in particular is precisely the kernel of the canonical projection from $\operatorname{QSym}$ to Stembridge's algebra of peak quasisymmetric functions, and is the orthogonal complement of Nyman's peak algebra. We prove necessary and sufficient conditions for obtaining spanning sets and linear bases for the kernel $\mathcal{K}^{\operatorname{st}}$ of any descent statistic $\operatorname{st}$ in terms of fundamental quasisymmetric functions, and give characterizations of $\mathcal{K}^{\operatorname{Pk}}$ and $\mathcal{K}^{\operatorname{pk}}$ in terms of the fundamental basis and the monomial basis of $\operatorname{QSym}$. Our results imply that the peak set and peak number statistics are $M$-binomial, confirming a conjecture of Grinberg.
Forest polynomials and the class of the permutahedral variety

We study a basis of the polynomial ring that we call forest polynomials. This family of polynomials is indexed by a combinatorial structure called indexed forests and permits several definitions, one of which involves flagged P-partitions. As such, these polynomials have a positive expansion in the basis of slide polynomials. By a novel insertion procedure that may be viewed as a generalization of the Sylvester correspondence we establish that Schubert polynomials decompose positively in terms of forest polynomials. Our insertion procedure involves a correspondence on words which allows us to show that forest polynomials multiply positively.
We proceed to show that forest polynomials are a particularly convenient basis in regards to studying the quotient of the polynomial ring modulo the ideal of positive degree quasisymmetric polynomials. This aspect allows us to give a manifestly nonnegative integral description for the Schubert class expansion of the cohomology class of the permutahedral variety in terms of a parking procedure. We study the associated combinatorics in depth and introduce a multivariate extension of mixed Eulerian numbers.
$\varepsilon$-Almost collision-flat universal hash functions and mosaics of designs

We introduce, motivate and study $\varepsilon$-almost collision-flat (ACFU) universal hash functions $f:\mathcal X\times\mathcal S\to\mathcal A$. Their main property is that the number of collisions in any given value is bounded. Each $\varepsilon$-ACFU hash function is an $\varepsilon$-almost universal (AU) hash function, and every $\varepsilon$-almost strongly universal (ASU) hash function is an $\varepsilon$-ACFU hash function. We study how the size of the seed set $\mathcal S$ depends on $\varepsilon,|\mathcal X|$ and $|\mathcal A|$. Depending on how these parameters are interrelated, seed-minimizing ACFU hash functions are equivalent to mosaics of balanced incomplete block designs (BIBDs) or to duals of mosaics of quasi-symmetric block designs; in a third case, mosaics of transversal designs and nets yield seed-optimal ACFU hash functions, but a full characterization is missing. By either extending $\mathcal S$ or $\mathcal X$, it is possible to obtain an $\varepsilon$-ACFU hash function from an $\varepsilon$-AU hash function or an $\varepsilon$-ASU hash function, generalizing the construction of mosaics of designs from a given resolvable design (Gnilke, Greferath, Pav{\v c}ević, Des. Codes Cryptogr. 86(1)). The concatenation of an ASU and an ACFU hash function again yields an ACFU hash function. Finally, we motivate ACFU hash functions by their applicability in privacy amplification.
On the combinatorics of descents and inverse descents in the hyperoctahedral group
The elements in the hyperoctahedral group $\mathfrak{B}_n$ can be treated as signed permutations with the natural order $\cdots<-2<-1<0<1<2<\cdots$, or as colored permutations with the $r$-order $-1<_r-2<_r\cdots<_r0<_r1<_r2<_r\cdots$. For any $π\in\mathfrak{B}_n$, let $\operatorname{des}^B(π)$ and $\operatorname{ides}^B(π)$ be the number of descents and inverse descents in $π$ under the natural order, and let $\operatorname{des}_B(π)$ and $\operatorname{ides}_B(π)$ be the number of descents and inverse descents in $π$ under the $r$-order. In this paper, by investigating signed permutation grids under both the natural order and the $r$-order, we give combinatorial proofs for six recurrence formulas of the joint distribution of descents and inverse descents over the hyperoctahedral group $\mathfrak{B}_n$, the set in involutions of $\mathfrak{B}_n$ denoted by $\mathcal{I}_n^B$, and the set of fixed-point free involutions in $\mathfrak{B}_n$ denoted by $\mathcal{J}_n^B$, respectively. Some of these six formulas are new, and some reveal the combinatorial essences of the results obtained by Visontai, Moustakas and Cao-Liu through algebraic approaches such as quasisymmetric functions. Furthermore, from these formulas, we conclude that $(\operatorname{des}^B,\operatorname{ides}^B)$ and $(\operatorname{des}_B,\operatorname{ides}_B)$ are equidistributed over both $\mathfrak{B}_n$ and $\mathcal{I}_n^B$, but not on $\mathcal{J}_n^B$.
Noncommutative symmetric functions and skewing operators

Skewing operators play a central role in the symmetric function theory because of the importance of the product structure of the symmetric function space. The theory of noncommutative symmetric functions is a useful tool for studying expansions of a given symmetric function in terms of various bases. In this paper, we establish a further development of the theory for studying skewing operators. Using this machinery, we are able to easily reproduce the Littlewood--Richardson rule, and provide recurrence relations for chromatic quasisymmetric functions, which generalizes Harada--Precup's recurrence.
James reduced product schemes and double quasisymmetric functions

Symmetric function theory is a key ingredient in the Schubert calculus of Grassmannians. Quasisymmetric functions are analogues that are similarly central to algebraic combinatorics, but for which the associated geometry is poorly developed. Baker and Richter (2008) showed that $\textrm{QSym}$ manifests topologically as the cohomology ring of the loop suspension of infinite projective space or equivalently of its combinatorial homotopy model, the James reduced product $J\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^\infty$. In recent work, we used this viewpoint to develop topologically-motivated bases of $\textrm{QSym}$ and initiate a Schubert calculus for $J\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^\infty$ in both cohomology and $K$-theory.
Here, we study the torus-equivariant cohomology of $J\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^\infty$. We identify a cellular basis and introduce double monomial quasisymmetric functions as combinatorial representatives, analogous to the factorial Schur functions and double Schubert polynomials of classical Schubert calculus. We also provide a combinatorial Littlewood--Richardson rule for the structure coefficients of this basis.
Furthermore, we introduce an algebro-geometric analogue of the James reduced product construction. In particular, we prove that the James reduced product of a complex projective variety also carries the structure of a projective variety.
$P$-partitions with flags and back stable quasisymmetric functions

Stanley's theory of $(P,ω)$-partitions is a standard tool in combinatorics. It can be extended to allow for the presence of a restriction, that is a given maximal value for partitions at each vertex of the poset, as was shown by Assaf and Bergeron. Here we present a variation on their approach, which applies more generally. The enumerative side of the theory is more naturally expressed in terms of back stable quasisymmetric functions. We study the space of such functions, following the work of Lam, Lee and Shimozono on back stable symmetric functions. As applications we describe a new basis for the ring of polynomials that we call forest polynomials. Additionally we give a signed multiplicity-free expansion for any monomial expressed in the basis of slide polynomials.

Let $R_n=\mathbb{Q}[x_1,x_2,\ldots,x_n]$ be the ring of polynomial in $n$ variables and consider the ideal $\langle \mathrm{QSym}_{n}^{+}\rangle\subseteq R_n$ generated by quasisymmetric polynomials without constant term. It was shown by J.~C.~Aval, F.~Bergeron and N.~Bergeron that $\dim\big(R_n\big/\langle \mathrm{QSym}_{n}^{+} \rangle\big)=C_n$ the $n$th Catalan number. In the present work, we explain this phenomenon by defining a set of permutations $\mathrm{QSV}_{n}$ with the following properties: first, $\mathrm{QSV}_{n}$ is a basis of the Temperley--Lieb algebra $\mathsf{TL}_{n}(2)$, and second, when considering $\mathrm{QSV}_{n}$ as a collection of points in $\mathbb{Q}^{n}$, the top-degree homogeneous component of the vanishing ideal $\mathbf{I}(\mathrm{QSV}_{n})$ is $\langle \mathrm{QSym}_{n}^{+}\rangle$.
Our construction has a few byproducts which are independently noteworthy. We define an equivalence relation $\sim$ on the symmetric group $S_{n}$ using weak excedances and show that its equivalence classes are naturally indexed by noncrossing partitions. Each equivalence class is an interval in the Bruhat order between an element of $\mathrm{QSV}_{n}$ and a $321$-avoiding permutation. Furthermore, the Bruhat order induces a well-defined order on $S_{n}\big/\!\!\sim$. Finally, we show that any section of the quotient $S_{n}\big/\!\!\sim$ gives an (often novel) basis for $\mathsf{TL}_{n}(2)$.
Quasicrystal Structure of Fundamental Quasisymmetric Functions, and Skeleton of Crystals
We use crystals of tableaux and descent compositions to understand the decomposition of Schur functions $s_λ$ into Gessel's fundamental quasisymmetric functions $F_α$. The connected crystal of tableaux $B(λ)$, associated to $s_λ$, is shown to be partitionned into a disjoint union of connected induced subgraphs $B(T_α)$ corresponding to the $F_α$'s.
We show that these subgraphs, which we call quasicrystals, are isomorphic (as graphs) to specific crystals of tableaux. This allows us to give a formula for the number of tableaux of shape $λ$ and maximal entry $n$. We also use this setting to give a constructive proof of a combinatorial formula for Kostka numbers $K^λ_μ$. We study the position of the quasicrystals within the crystal $B(λ)$, and show that they appear in dually positionned pairs, with the crystal anti-automorphism between them being given by a generalization of Schützenberger's evacuation. We introduce the notion of skeleton of the crystal $B(λ)$ given by replacing each subgraph $B(T_α)$ by the associated standard tableau of shape $λ$. We conjecture that its graph includes the dual equivalence graph for $λ$, introduced by Assaf, and that its subgraphs of tableaux with fixed number of descents have particular structures. Finally, we describe applications to plethysm, among which we give an algorithm to express any symmetric sum of fundamental quasisymmetric functions into the Schur basis, whose construction gives insight into the relationship between the two basis.
The Poincaré-extended ab-index

Motivated by a conjecture concerning Igusa local zeta functions for intersection posets of hyperplane arrangements, we introduce and study the Poincaré-extended ab-index, which generalizes both the ab-index and the Poincaré polynomial. For posets admitting R-labelings, we give a combinatorial description of the coefficients of the extended ab-index, proving their nonnegativity. In the case of intersection posets of hyperplane arrangements, we prove the above conjecture of the second author and Voll as well as another conjecture of the second author and Kühne. We also define the pullback ab-index generalizing the cd-index of face posets for oriented matroids. Our results recover, generalize and unify results from Billera-Ehrenborg-Readdy, Bergeron-Mykytiuk-Sottile-van Willigenburg, Saliola-Thomas, and Ehrenborg. This connection allows us to translate our results into the language of quasisymmetric functions, and-in the special case of symmetric functions-make a conjecture about Schur positivity. A proof of this conjecture now appears an appendix by Ricky Ini Liu.
The algebra of extended peaks

Building up on our previous works regarding $q$-deformed $P$-partitions, we introduce a new family of subalgebras for the ring of quasisymmetric functions. Each of these subalgebras admits as a basis a $q$-analogue to Gessel's fundamental quasisymmetric functions where $q$ is equal to a complex root of unity. Interestingly, the basis elements are indexed by sets corresponding to an intermediary statistic between peak and descent sets of permutations that we call extended peak.
Cyclic shuffle-compatibility via cyclic shuffle algebras

A permutation statistic $\operatorname{st}$ is said to be shuffle-compatible if the distribution of $\operatorname{st}$ over the set of shuffles of two disjoint permutations $π$ and $σ$ depends only on $\operatorname{st}π$, $\operatorname{st}σ$, and the lengths of $π$ and $σ$. Shuffle-compatibility is implicit in Stanley's early work on $P$-partitions, and was first explicitly studied by Gessel and Zhuang, who developed an algebraic framework for shuffle-compatibility centered around their notion of the shuffle algebra of a shuffle-compatible statistic. For a family of statistics called descent statistics, these shuffle algebras are isomorphic to quotients of the algebra of quasisymmetric functions.
Recently, Domagalski, Liang, Minnich, Sagan, Schmidt, and Sietsema defined a version of shuffle-compatibility for statistics on cyclic permutations, and studied cyclic shuffle-compatibility through purely combinatorial means. In this paper, we define the cyclic shuffle algebra of a cyclic shuffle-compatible statistic, and develop an algebraic framework for cyclic shuffle-compatibility in which the role of quasisymmetric functions is replaced by the cyclic quasisymmetric functions recently introduced by Adin, Gessel, Reiner, and Roichman. We use our theory to provide explicit descriptions for the cyclic shuffle algebras of various cyclic permutation statistics, which in turn gives algebraic proofs for their cyclic shuffle-compatibility.
On distinguishing digraphs by its quasisymmetric B-polynomial
The $B$-polynomial defined by J. Awan and O. Bernardi is a generalization of Tutte Polynomial to digraphs. In this paper, we solve an open question raised by J. Awan and O. Bernardi regarding the expansion of $B$-polynomial in elementary symmetric polynomials. We show that the quasisymmetric generalization of the $B$-polynomial distinguishes a class of oriented proper caterpillars and the class of oriented paths. We present a recurrence relation for the quasisymmetric $B$-polynomial involving the deletion of a source or a sink. As a consequence, we prove that a class of digraph $\mathcal{D}$ is distinguishable if and only if the class $\mathcal{D}^{\vee}$ obtained by taking directed join of $K_1$ with each digraph in $\mathcal{D}$ is distinguishable, which concludes that the digraph analogue of Stanley's Tree conjecture holds for a large class of acyclic digraphs. We further study the symmetric properties of the quasisymmetric $B$-polynomial and its relation with certain digraphs.

This paper realizes of two families of combinatorial symmetric functions via the complex character theory of the finite general linear group $\mathrm{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{F}_{q})$: chromatic quasisymmetric functions and vertical strip LLT polynomials. The associated $\mathrm{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{F}_{q})$ characters are elementary in nature and can be obtained by induction from certain well-behaved characters of the unipotent upper triangular groups $\mathrm{UT}_{n}(\mathbb{F}_{q})$. The proof of these results also gives a general Hopf algebraic approach to computing the induction map. Additional results include a connection between the relevant $\mathrm{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{F}_{q})$ characters and Hessenberg varieties and a re-interpretation of known theorems and conjectures about the relevant symmetric functions in terms of $\mathrm{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{F}_{q})$.
Weak Bruhat interval modules for genomic Schur functions

Let $λ$ be a partition of a positive integer $n$. The genomic Schur function $U_λ$ was introduced by Pechenik--Yong in the context of the $K$-theory of Grassmannians. Recently, Pechenik provided a positive combinatorial formula for the fundamental quasisymmetric expansion of $U_λ$ in terms of increasing gapless tableaux. In this paper, for each $1 \le m \le n$, we construct an $H_m(0)$-module $\mathbf{G}_{λ;m}$ whose image under the quasisymmetric characteristic is the $m$th degree homogeneous component of $U_λ$ by defining an $H_m(0)$-action on increasing gapless tableaux. We provide a method to assign a permutation to each increasing gapless tableau, and use this assignment to decompose $\mathbf{G}_{λ;m}$ into a direct sum of weak Bruhat interval modules. Furthermore, we determine the projective cover of each summand of the direct sum decomposition.
