Permutation Statistics in Conjugacy Classes of the Symmetric Group
We introduce the notion of a weighted inversion statistic on the symmetric group, and examine its distribution on each conjugacy class. Our work generalizes the study of several common permutation statistics, including the number of inversions, the number of descents, the major index, and the number of excedances. As a consequence, we obtain explicit formulas for the first moments of several statistics by conjugacy class. We also show that when the cycle lengths are sufficiently large, the higher moments of arbitrary permutation statistics are independent of the conjugacy class. Fulman (J. Comb. Theory Ser. A., 1998) previously established this result for major index and descents. We obtain these results, in part, by generalizing the techniques of Fulman (ibid.), and introducing the notion of permutation constraints. For permutation statistics that can be realized via symmetric constraints, we show that each moment is a polynomial in the degree of the symmetric group.

Cyclic shuffle-compatibility via cyclic shuffle algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
A permutation statistic $\operatorname{st}$ is said to be shuffle-compatible if the distribution of $\operatorname{st}$ over the set of shuffles of two disjoint permutations $π$ and $σ$ depends only on $\operatorname{st}π$, $\operatorname{st}σ$, and the lengths of $π$ and $σ$. Shuffle-compatibility is implicit in Stanley's early work on $P$-partitions, and was first explicitly studied by Gessel and Zhuang, who developed an algebraic framework for shuffle-compatibility centered around their notion of the shuffle algebra of a shuffle-compatible statistic. For a family of statistics called descent statistics, these shuffle algebras are isomorphic to quotients of the algebra of quasisymmetric functions. Recently, Domagalski, Liang, Minnich, Sagan, Schmidt, and Sietsema defined a version of shuffle-compatibility for statistics on cyclic permutations, and studied cyclic shuffle-compatibility through purely combinatorial means. In this paper, we define the cyclic shuffle algebra of a cyclic shuffle-compatible statistic, and develop an algebraic framework for cyclic shuffle-compatibility in which the role of quasisymmetric functions is replaced by the cyclic quasisymmetric functions recently introduced by Adin, Gessel, Reiner, and Roichman. We use our theory to provide explicit descriptions for the cyclic shuffle algebras of various cyclic permutation statistics, which in turn gives algebraic proofs for their cyclic shuffle-compatibility.

Rowmotion on 321-avoiding permutations
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give a natural definition of rowmotion for $321$-avoiding permutations, by translating, through bijections involving Dyck paths and the Lalanne--Kreweras involution, the analogous notion for antichains of the positive root poset of type $A$. We prove that some permutation statistics, such as the number of fixed points, are homomesic under rowmotion, meaning that they have a constant average over its orbits. Our setting also provides a more natural description of the celebrated Armstrong--Stump--Thomas equivariant bijection between antichains and non-crossing matchings in types $A$ and $B$, by showing that it is equivalent to the Robinson--Schensted--Knuth correspondence on $321$-avoiding permutations permutations.

An Ising model having permutation spin motivated by a permutation complexity measure
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we define a variant of the Ising model in which spins are replaced with permutations. The energy between two spins is a function of the relative disorder of one spin, a permutation, to the other. This model is motivated by a complexity measure for declarative systems. For such systems a state is a permutation and the permutation sorting complexity measures the average sequential disorder of neighbouring states. To measure the relative disorder between two spins we use a symmetrized version of the descent permutation statistic that has appeared in the works of Chatterjee \& Diaconis and Petersen. The classical Ising model corresponds to the length-2 permutation case of this new model. We consider and prove some elementary properties for the 1D case of this model in which spins are length-3 permutations.

Statistics on clusters and $r$-Stirling permutations
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Goulden$\unicode{x2013}$Jackson cluster method, adapted to permutations by Elizalde and Noy, reduces the problem of counting permutations by occurrences of a prescribed consecutive pattern to that of counting clusters, which are special permutations with a lot of structure. Recently, Zhuang found a generalization of the cluster method which specializes to refinements by additional permutation statistics, namely the inverse descent number $\operatorname{ides}$, the inverse peak number $\operatorname{ipk}$, and the inverse left peak number $\operatorname{ilpk}$. Continuing this line of work, we study the enumeration of $2134\cdots m$-clusters by $\operatorname{ides}$, $\operatorname{ipk}$, and $\operatorname{ilpk}$, which allows us to derive formulas for counting permutations by occurrences of the consecutive pattern $2134\cdots m$ jointly with each of these statistics. Analogous results for the pattern $12\cdots (m-2)m(m-1)$ are obtained via symmetry arguments. Along the way, we discover that $2134\cdots (r+1)$-clusters are equinumerous with $r$-Stirling permutations introduced by Gessel and Stanley, and we establish some joint equidistributions between these two families of permutations.

An involution on restricted Laguerre histories and its applications
Published • View Publication • BIB
Laguerre histories (restricted or not) are certain weighted Motzkin paths with two types of level steps. They are, on one hand, in natural bijection with the set of permutations, and on the other hand, yield combinatorial interpretations for the moments of Laguerre polynomials via Flajolet's combinatorial theory of continued fractions. In this paper, we first introduce a reflection-like involution on restricted Laguerre histories. Then, we demonstrate its power by composing this involution with three bijections due to Fran\ccon-Viennot, Foata-Zeilberger, and Yan-Zhou-Lin, respectively. A host of equidistribution results involving various (multiset-valued) permutation statistics follow from these applications. As byproducts, seven apparently new Mahonian statistics present themselves; new interpretations of known Mahonian statistics are discovered as well. Finally, in our effort to show the interconnections between these Mahonian statistics, we are naturally led to a new link between the variant Yan-Zhou-Lin bijection and the Kreweras complement.
Homomesies on permutations -- an analysis of maps and statistics in the FindStat database
Published in Mathematics of Computation 93 (2024), no. 346, 921-976 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we perform a systematic study of permutation statistics and bijective maps on permutations in which we identify and prove 122 instances of the homomesy phenomenon. Homomesy occurs when the average value of a statistic is the same on each orbit of a given map. The maps we investigate include the Lehmer code rotation, the reverse, the complement, the Foata bijection, and the Kreweras complement. The statistics studied relate to familiar notions such as inversions, descents, and permutation patterns, and also more obscure constructs. Beside the many new homomesy results, we discuss our research method, in which we used SageMath to search the FindStat combinatorial statistics database to identify potential homomesies.

Characters of local and regular permutation statistics
The goal of this monograph is to study the indicator function for a set of permutations mapping one finite sequence of positive integers to another from a representation theoretic, combinatorial and probabilistic perspective. The degree of a function of permutations is the size of the largest pair of sequences required when expressing it as a linear combination of these indicators. This notion of degree, implicit in work of Diaconis, is critical for many applications of representation theory to extremal combinatorics, machine learning, probability and statistics. We use the term local to indicate bounded degree and initiate the study of low degree class functions, which encode probabilistic data for permutation statistics on each cycle type simultaneously. We begin with a self contained treatment of for functions of permutations, developing its theory using language familiar to enumerative and algebraic combinatorialists. This leads naturally to a novel basis for symmetric functions we call the path power sum symmetric functions. The most technically challenging part of our work is the path Murnaghan-Nakayama formula, which expands path power sums into Schur functions. By combining the the path Murnaghan-Nakayam formula with the classical theory of character polynomials, one obtains a structural characterization for moments for permutation statistics conditioning on cycle type. We then analyze asymptotic properties of these moments. In doing so, we introduce the novel family of regular permutation statistics, which include almost all reasonable weighted pattern counting statistics. We show a large family of regular statistics satisfy a law of large numbers on a given cycle type depending only on the proportion of fixed points and a have variances depending only on fixed points and two cycles.

Extreme Values of Permutation Statistics
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, Volume 31, Issue 3 (2024), Article P3.10 • View Publication • BIB
We investigate extreme values of Mahonian and Eulerian distributions arising from counting inversions and descents of random elements of finite Coxeter groups. To this end, we construct a triangular array of either distribution from a sequence of Coxeter groups with increasing ranks. To avoid degeneracy of extreme values, the number of i.i.d. samples $k_n$ in each row must be asymptotically bounded. We employ large deviations theory to prove the Gumbel attraction of Mahonian and Eulerian distributions. It is shown that for the two classes, different bounds on $k_n$ ensure this.

On a conjecture concerning the shuffle-compatible permutation statistics
Published • View Publication • BIB
The notion of shuffle-compatible permutation statistics was implicit in Stanley's work on P-partitions and was first explicitly studied by Gessel and Zhuang. The aim of this paper is to prove that the triple ${\rm (udr, pk, des)}$ is shuffle-compatible as conjectured by Gessel and Zhuang, where ${\rm udr}$ denotes the number of up-down runs, ${\rm pk}$ denotes the peak number, and ${\rm des}$ denotes the descent number. This is accomplished by establishing an ${\rm (udr, pk, des)}$-preserving bijection in the spirit of Baker-Jarvis and Sagan's bijective proofs of shuffle-compatibility property of permutation statistics. As an application, our bijection also enables us to prove that the pair $({\rm cpk}, {\rm cdes})$ is cyclic shuffle-compatible, where ${\rm cpk}$ denotes the cyclic peak number and ${\rm cdes}$ denotes the cyclic descent number.

Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of matrix Schubert varieties
Published • View Publication • BIB
Matrix Schubert varieties are affine varieties arising in the Schubert calculus of the complete flag variety. We give a formula for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of matrix Schubert varieties, answering a question of Jenna Rajchgot. We follow her proposed strategy of studying the highest-degree homogeneous parts of Grothendieck polynomials, which we call Castelnuovo-Mumford polynomials. In addition to the regularity formula, we obtain formulas for the degrees of all Castelnuovo-Mumford polynomials and for their leading terms, as well as a complete description of when two Castelnuovo-Mumford polynomials agree up to scalar multiple. The degree of the Grothendieck polynomial is a new permutation statistic which we call the Rajchgot index; we develop the properties of Rajchgot index and relate it to major index and to weak order.

Pattern-functions, statistics, and shallow permutations
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study relationships between permutation statistics and pattern-functions, counting the number of times particular patterns occur in a permutation. This allows us to write several familiar statistics as linear combinations of pattern counts, both in terms of a permutation and in terms of its image under the fundamental bijection. We use these enumerations to resolve the question of characterizing so-called "shallow" permutations, whose depth (equivalently, disarray/displacement) is minimal with respect to length and reflection length. We present this characterization in several ways, including vincular patterns, mesh patterns, and a new object that we call "arrow patterns." Furthermore, we specialize to characterizing and enumerating shallow involutions and shallow cycles, encountering the Motzkin and large Schröder numbers, respectively.

An Experimental (yet fully rigorous!) Study of a certain "Measure Of Disarray" that 12-year Noga Alon Proved was always Even
We study in depth a certain permutation statistic that was the subject of a brilliant insight by 12-year-old Noga Alon. Our approach is purely empirical and experimental, yet it is fully rigorous, thereby debunking, yet another time, the myth that mathematics is always a deductive science. This revised version contains three postscripts describing improvements pointed out by Stoyan Dimitrov, Kyle Petersen, and Martin Rubey.

Permanent identities, combinatorial sequences, and permutation statistics
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we confirm six conjectures on the exact values of some permanents, relating them to the Genocchi numbers of the first and second kinds as well as the Euler numbers. For example, we prove that $$\mathrm{per}\left[\left\lfloor\frac{2j-k}{n}\right\rfloor\right]_{1\le j,k\le n}=2(2^{n+1}-1)B_{n+1},$$ where $B_0,B_1,B_2,\ldots$ are the Bernoulli numbers. We also show that $$ \mathrm{per}\left[\mathrm{sgn}\left(\cosπ\frac{i+j}{n+1}\right)\right]_{1\le i,j\le n}=\begin{cases} -\sum_{k=0}^m\binom{m}{k}E_{2k+1}&\quad\text{if}\ n=2m+1,\\ \sum_{k=0}^m\binom{m}{k}E_{2k}&\quad\text{if}\ n=2m, \end{cases} $$ where $\mathrm{sgn}(x)$ is the sign function, and $E_0,E_1,E_2,\ldots$ are the Euler (zigzag) numbers. In the course of linking the evaluation of these permanents to the aforementioned combinatorial sequences, the classical permutation statistic -- the excedance number, together with several kinds of its variants, plays a central role. Our approach features recurrence relations, bijections, as well as certain elementary operations on matrices that preserve their permanents. Moreover, our proof of the second permanent identity leads to a proof of Bala's conjectural continued fraction formula, and an unexpected permutation interpretation for the $γ$-coefficients of the $2$-Eulerian polynomials.

Moments of permutation statistics and central limit theorems
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that if a permutation statistic can be written as a linear combination of bivincular patterns, then its moments can be expressed as a linear combination of factorials with constant coefficients. This generalizes a result of Zeilberger. We use an approach of Chern, Diaconis, Kane and Rhoades, previously applied on set partitions and matchings. In addition, we give a new proof of the central limit theorem (CLT) for the number of occurrences of classical patterns, which uses a lemma of Burstein and Hasto. We give a simple interpretation of this lemma and an analogous lemma that would imply the CLT for the number of occurrences of any vincular pattern. Furthermore, we obtain explicit formulas for the moments of the descents and the minimal descents statistics. The latter is used to give a new direct proof of the fact that we do not necessarily have asymptotic normality of the number of pattern occurrences in the case of bivincular patterns. Closed forms for some of the higher moments of several popular statistics on permutations are also obtained.

Equidistributions around special kinds of descents and excedances
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider a sequence of four variable polynomials by refining Stieltjes' continued fraction for Eulerian polynomials. Using combinatorial theory of Jacobi-type continued fractions and bijections we derive various combinatorial interpretations in terms of permutation statistics for these polynomials, which include special kinds of descents and excedances in a recent paper of Baril and Kirgizov. As a by-product, we derive several equidistribution results for permutation statistics, which enables us to confirm and strengthen a recent conjecture of Vajnovszki and also to obtain several compagnion permutation statistics for two bistatistics in a conjecture of Baril and Kirgizov.

Block decomposition and statistics arising from permutation tableaux
Published • View Publication • BIB
Permutation statistics $\wnm$ and $\rlm$ are both arising from permutation tableaux. $\wnm$ was introduced by Chen and Zhou, which was proved equally distributed with the number of unrestricted rows of a permutation tableau. While $\rlm$ is showed by Nadeau equally distributed with the number of $1$'s in the first row of a permutation tableau. In this paper, we investigate the joint distribution of $\wnm$ and $\rlm$. Statistic $(\rlm,\wnm,\rlmin,\des,(\underline{321}))$ is shown equally distributed with $(\rlm,\rlmin,\wnm,\des,(\underline{321}))$ on $S_n$. Then the generating function of $(\rlm,\wnm)$ follows. An involution is constructed to explain the symmetric property of the generating function. Also, we study the triple statistic $(\wnm,\rlm,\asc)$, which is shown to be equally distributed with $(\rlmax-1,\rlmin,\asc)$ as studied by Josuat-Verg$\grave{e}$s. The main method we adopt throughout the paper is constructing bijections based on a block decomposition of permutations.

Pro-isomorphic zeta functions of nilpotent groups and Lie rings under base extension
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 375 (2022), 1051-1100 • View Publication • BIB
We consider pro-isomorphic zeta functions of the groups $Γ(\mathcal{O}_K)$, where $Γ$ is a unipotent group scheme defined over $\mathbb{Z}$ and $K$ varies over all number fields. Under certain conditions, we show that these functions have a fine Euler decomposition with factors indexed by primes $\mathfrak{p}$ of $K$ and depending only on the structure of $Γ$, the degree $[K : \mathbb{Q}]$, and the cardinality of the residue field $\mathcal{O}_K / \mathfrak{p}$. We show that the factors satisfy a certain uniform rationality and study their dependence on $[K : \mathbb{Q}]$. Explicit computations are given for several families of unipotent groups. These include an apparently novel identity involving permutation statistics on the hyperoctahedral group.

Diagonalization of Fix-Mahonian Matrices
Consider the regular representation of the sum over all permutations weighted by the sum of their descent, inversion, and fixed point multinomials. We compute the spectrum and the multiplicities of its elements of that matrix. Note that those multinomial statistics allow to apply the result on several permutation statistics like the number of fixed points, of descents, of inversions, and the major index at the same time.

Theoretical Analysis of Sequential Importance Sampling Algorithms for a Class of Perfect Matching Problems
This paper analyzes the performance of sequential importance sampling algorithms for estimating the number of perfect matchings in bipartite graphs. Precise bounds on the number of samples required to yield an accurate estimate are derived. In doing so, moments of permutation statistics are computed using generating functions and nonstandard limit theorems are derived by expressing perfect matchings as a time-inhomogeneous Markov chain.
