Vector partition functions and Kronecker coefficients
Published in J. Phys. A: Mathematical and Theoretical, Volume 54, Number 20 (2021) • View Publication • BIB
The Kronecker coefficients are the structure constants for the restriction of irreducible representations of the general linear group $GL(n m)$ into irreducibles for the subgroup $GL(n)\times GL(m)$. In this work we study the quasipolynomial nature of the Kronecker function using elementary tools from polyhedral geometry. We write the Kronecker function in terms of coefficients of a vector partition function. This allows us to define a new family of coefficients, the atomic Kronecker coefficients. Our derivation is explicit and self-contained, and gives a new exact formula and an upper bound for the Kronecker coefficients in the first nontrivial case.

A formula for the partition function that "counts"
Published in Annals of Combinatorics 20 (2016) 301--316 • View Publication • BIB
We derive a combinatorial multisum expression for the number $D(n,k)$ of partitions of $n$ with Durfee square of order $k$. An immediate corollary is therefore a combinatorial formula for $p(n)$, the number of partitions of $n$. We then study $D(n,k)$ as a quasipolynomial. We consider the natural polynomial approximation $\tilde{D}(n,k)$ to the quasipolynomial representation of $D(n,k)$. Numerically, the sum $\sum_{1\leq k \leq \sqrt{n}} \tilde{D}(n,k)$ appears to be extremely close to the initial term of the Hardy--Ramanujan--Rademacher convergent series for $p(n)$.

Unimodality of the Andrews-Garvan-Dyson cranks of partitions
Published • View Publication • BIB
The main objective of this paper is to investigate the distribution of the Andrews-Garvan-Dyson crank of a partition. Let $M(m,n)$ denote the number of partitions of $n$ with the Andrews-Garvan-Dyson crank $m$, we show that the sequence \break $\{M(m,n)\}_{|m|\leq n-1}$ is unimodal for $n\geq 44$. It turns out that the unimodality of \break $\{M(m,n)\}_{|m|\leq n-1}$ is related to the monotonicity properties of two partition \break functions $p_k(n)$ and $pp_k(n)$. Let $p_k(n)$ denote the number of partitions of $n$ with at most $k$ parts such that the largest part appears at least twice and let $pp_k(n)$ denote the number of pairs $(α,β)$ of partitions of $n$, where $α$ is a partition counted by $p_k(i)$ and $β$ is a partition counted by $p_{k+1}(n-i)$ for $0\leq i\leq n$. We show that $p_k(n)\geq p_k(n-1)$ for $k\geq 5$ and $n\geq 14$ and $pp_k(n)\geq pp_k(n-1)$ for $k\geq 3$ and $n\geq 2$. With the aid of the monotonicity properties on $p_k(n)$ and $pp_k(n)$, we show that $M(m,n)\geq M(m,n-1)$ for $n\geq 14$ and $ 0\leq m \leq n-2$ and $M(m-1,n)\geq M(m,n)$ for $n\geq 44$ and $1\leq m\leq n-1$. By means of the symmetry $M(m,n)=M(-m,n)$, we find that $M(m-1,n)\geq M(m,n)$ for $n\geq 44$ and $1\leq m\leq n-1$ implies that the sequence $\{M(m,n)\}_{|m|\leq n-1}$ is unimodal for $n\geq 44$. We also give a proof of an upper bound for ospt(n) conjectured by Chan and Mao in light of the inequality $M(m-1,n)\geq M(m,n)$ for $n\geq 44$ and $0\leq m\leq n-1$.

The q-Hahn PushTASEP
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce the $q$-Hahn PushTASEP --- an integrable stochastic interacting particle system which is a 3-parameter generalization of the PushTASEP, a well-known close relative of the TASEP (Totally Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process). The transition probabilities in the $q$-Hahn PushTASEP are expressed through the $_4φ_3$ basic hypergeometric function. Under suitable limits, the $q$-Hahn PushTASEP degenerates to all known integrable (1+1)-dimensional stochastic systems with a pushing mechanism. One can thus view our new system as a pushing counterpart of the $q$-Hahn TASEP introduced by Povolotsky (2013). We establish Markov duality relations and contour integral formulas for the $q$-Hahn PushTASEP. In a $q\to 1$ limit of our process we arrive at a random recursion which, in a special case, appears to be similar to the inverse-Beta polymer model. However, unlike in recursions for Beta polymer models, the weights (i.e., the coefficients of the recursion) in our model depend on the previous values of the partition function in a nontrivial manner.

Hodge-Riemann relations for Potts model partition functions
We prove that the Hessians of nonzero partial derivatives of the (homogenous) multivariate Tutte polynomial of any matroid have exactly one positive eigenvalue on the positive orthant when $0<q\leq 1$. Consequences are proofs of the strongest conjecture of Mason and negative dependence properties for $q$-state Potts model partition functions.
Log-Concave Polynomials II: High-Dimensional Walks and an FPRAS for Counting Bases of a Matroid
Published • View Publication • BIB
We design an FPRAS to count the number of bases of any matroid given by an independent set oracle, and to estimate the partition function of the random cluster model of any matroid in the regime where $0<q<1$. Consequently, we can sample random spanning forests in a graph and (approximately) compute the reliability polynomial of any matroid. We also prove the thirty year old conjecture of Mihail and Vazirani that the bases exchange graph of any matroid has expansion at least 1. One of our key observations is a close connection between pure simplicial complexes and multiaffine homogeneous polynomials. Specifically, if $X$ is a pure simplicial complex with positive weights on its maximal faces, we can associate with $X$ a multiaffine homogeneous polynomial $p_{X}$ such that the eigenvalues of the localized random walks on $X$ correspond to the eigenvalues of the Hessian of derivatives of $p_{X}$.

Random polymers via orthogonal Whittaker and symplectic Schur functions
This thesis deals with some $(1+1)$-dimensional lattice path models from the KPZ universality class: the directed random polymer with inverse-gamma weights (known as log-gamma polymer) and its zero temperature degeneration, i.e. the last passage percolation model, with geometric or exponential waiting times. We consider three path geometries: point-to-line, point-to-half-line, and point-to-line with paths restricted to stay in a half-plane. Through exact formulas, we establish new connections between integrable probabilistic models and the ubiquitous Whittaker and Schur functions. More in detail, via the use of A. N. Kirillov's geometric Robinson-Schensted-Knuth (RSK) correspondence, we compute the Laplace transform of the polymer partition functions in the above geometries in terms of orthogonal Whittaker functions. In the case of the first two geometries we also provide multiple contour integral formulas. For the corresponding last passage percolation problems, we obtain new formulas in terms of symplectic Schur functions, both directly via RSK on polygonal arrays and via zero temperature limit from the log-gamma polymer formulas. As scaling limits of the point-to-line and point-to-half-line models with exponential waiting times, we derive Sasamoto's Fredholm determinant formula for the GOE Tracy-Widom distribution, as well as the one-point marginal distribution of the ${\rm Airy}_{2\to1}$ process.

Location of zeros for the partition function of the Ising model on bounded degree graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The seminal Lee-Yang theorem states that for any graph the zeros of the partition function of the ferromagnetic Ising model lie on the unit circle in $\mathbb C$. In fact the union of the zeros of all graphs is dense on the unit circle. In this paper we study the location of the zeros for the class of graphs of bounded maximum degree $d\geq 3$, both in the ferromagnetic and the anti-ferromagnetic case. We determine the location exactly as a function of the inverse temperature and the degree $d$. An important step in our approach is to translate to the setting of complex dynamics and analyze a dynamical system that is naturally associated to the partition function.

A reverse Sidorenko inequality
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $H$ be a graph allowing loops as well as vertex and edge weights. We prove that, for every triangle-free graph $G$ without isolated vertices, the weighted number of graph homomorphisms $\hom(G, H)$ satisfies the inequality \[ \hom(G, H ) \le \prod_{uv \in E(G)} \hom(K_{d_u,d_v}, H )^{1/(d_ud_v)}, \] where $d_u$ denotes the degree of vertex $u$ in $G$. In particular, one has \[ \hom(G, H )^{1/|E(G)|} \le \hom(K_{d,d}, H )^{1/d^2} \] for every $d$-regular triangle-free $G$. The triangle-free hypothesis on $G$ is best possible. More generally, we prove a graphical Brascamp-Lieb type inequality, where every edge of $G$ is assigned some two-variable function. These inequalities imply tight upper bounds on the partition function of various statistical models such as the Ising and Potts models, which includes independent sets and graph colorings. For graph colorings, corresponding to $H = K_q$, we show that the triangle-free hypothesis on $G$ may be dropped; this is also valid if some of the vertices of $K_q$ are looped. A corollary is that among $d$-regular graphs, $G = K_{d,d}$ maximizes the quantity $c_q(G)^{1/|V(G)|}$ for every $q$ and $d$, where $c_q(G)$ counts proper $q$-colorings of $G$. Finally, we show that if the edge-weight matrix of $H$ is positive semidefinite, then \[ \hom(G, H) \le \prod_{v \in V(G)} \hom(K_{d_v+1}, H )^{1/(d_v+1)}. \] This implies that among $d$-regular graphs, $G = K_{d+1}$ maximizes $\hom(G, H)^{1/|V(G)|}$. For 2-spin Ising models, our results give a complete characterization of extremal graphs: complete bipartite graphs maximize the partition function of 2-spin antiferromagnetic models and cliques maximize the partition function of ferromagnetic models. These results settle a number of conjectures by Galvin-Tetali, Galvin, and Cohen-Csikvári-Perkins-Tetali, and provide an alternate proof to a conjecture by Kahn.

Parity of the Partition Function p(n,k)
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let p(n, k) denote the number of partitions of n into parts less than or equal to k. We show several properties of this function modulo 2. First, we prove that for fixed positive integers k and m, p(n,k) is periodic modulo m. Using this, we are able to find lower and upper bounds for the number of odd values of the function for a fixed k.

Magnificent Four with Colors
Published in Commun. Math. Phys. 372 (2019) 573-597 • View Publication • BIB
We study the rank N magnificent four theory, which is the supersymmetric localization of U(N) super-Yang-Mills theory with matter (a super-group U(N|N) gauge theory) on a Calabi-Yau fourfold. Our theory contains the higher rank Donaldson-Thomas theory of threefolds. We conjecture an explicit formula for the partition function Z, and report on the performed checks. The partition function Z has a free field representation. Surprisingly, it depends on the Coulomb and mass parameters in a simple way. We also clarify the definition of the instanton measure.

Coloured stochastic vertex models and their spectral theory
Published • View Publication • BIB
This work is dedicated to $\mathfrak{sl}_{n+1}$-related integrable stochastic vertex models; we call such models coloured. We prove several results about these models, which include the following: (1) We construct the basis of (rational) eigenfunctions of the coloured transfer-matrices as partition functions of our lattice models with certain boundary conditions. Similarly, we construct a dual basis and prove the corresponding orthogonality relations and Plancherel formulae; (2) We derive a variety of combinatorial properties of those eigenfunctions, such as branching rules, exchange relations under Hecke divided-difference operators, (skew) Cauchy identities of different types, and monomial expansions; (3) We show that our eigenfunctions are certain (non-obvious) reductions of the nested Bethe Ansatz eigenfunctions; (4) For models in a quadrant with domain-wall (or half-Bernoulli) boundary conditions, we prove a matching relation that identifies the distribution of the coloured height function at a point with the distribution of the height function along a line in an associated colour-blind ($\mathfrak{sl}_2$-related) stochastic vertex model. Thanks to a variety of known results about asymptotics of height functions of the colour-blind models, this implies a similar variety of limit theorems for the coloured height function of our models; (5) We demonstrate how the coloured-uncoloured match degenerates to the coloured (or multi-species) versions of the ASEP, $q$-PushTASEP, and the $q$-boson model; (6) We show how our eigenfunctions relate to non-symmetric Cherednik-Macdonald theory, and we make use of this connection to prove a probabilistic matching result by applying Cherednik-Dunkl operators to the corresponding non-symmetric Cauchy identity.

Note on the zero-free region of the hard-core model
In this paper we prove a new zero-free region for the partition function of the hard-core model, that is, the independence polynomials of graphs with largest degree $Δ$. This new domain contains the half disk $$D=\left\{ λ\in \mathbb{C}\ |\ \mathrm{Re}(λ)\geq 0, |λ|\leq \frac{7}{8}\tan \left( \fracπ{2(Δ-1)}\right)\right\}.$$

Mixed partition functions and exponentially bounded edge-connection rank
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study graph parameters whose associated edge-connection matrices have exponentially bounded rank growth. Our main result is an explicit construction of a large class of graph parameters with this property that we call mixed partition functions. Mixed partition functions can be seen as a generalization of partition functions of vertex models, as introduced by de la Harpe and Jones, [P. de la Harpe, V.F.R. Jones, Graph invariants related to statistical mechanical models: examples and problems, Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series B 57 (1993) 207--227] and they are related to invariant theory of orthosymplectic supergroup. We moreover show that evaluations of the characteristic polynomial of a simple graph are examples of mixed partition functions, answering a question of de la Harpe and Jones.

Searching for dense subsets in a graph via the partition function
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a set $S$ of vertices of a graph $G$, we define its density $0 \leq σ(S) \leq 1$ as the ratio of the number of edges of $G$ spanned by the vertices of $S$ to ${|S| \choose 2}$. We show that, given a graph $G$ with $n$ vertices and an integer $m$, the partition function $\sum_S \exp\{ γm σ(S) \}$, where the sum is taken over all $m$-subsets $S$ of vertices and $0 < γ<1$ is fixed in advance, can be approximated within relative error $0 < ε< 1$ in quasi-polynomial $n^{O(\ln m - \ln ε)}$ time. We discuss numerical experiments and observe that for the random graph $G(n, 1/2)$ one can afford a much larger $γ$, provided the ratio $n/m$ is sufficiently large.

Approximation Algorithms for Complex-Valued Ising Models on Bounded Degree Graphs
Published in Quantum 3, 162 (2019) • View Publication • BIB
We study the problem of approximating the Ising model partition function with complex parameters on bounded degree graphs. We establish a deterministic polynomial-time approximation scheme for the partition function when the interactions and external fields are absolutely bounded close to zero. Furthermore, we prove that for this class of Ising models the partition function does not vanish. Our algorithm is based on an approach due to Barvinok for approximating evaluations of a polynomial based on the location of the complex zeros and a technique due to Patel and Regts for efficiently computing the leading coefficients of graph polynomials on bounded degree graphs. Finally, we show how our algorithm can be extended to approximate certain output probability amplitudes of quantum circuits.

Algorithmic Pirogov-Sinai theory
Published • View Publication • BIB
We develop an efficient algorithmic approach for approximate counting and sampling in the low-temperature regime of a broad class of statistical physics models on finite subsets of the lattice $\mathbb Z^d$ and on the torus $(\mathbb Z/n \mathbb Z)^d$. Our approach is based on combining contour representations from Pirogov-Sinai theory with Barvinok's approach to approximate counting using truncated Taylor series. Some consequences of our main results include an FPTAS for approximating the partition function of the hard-core model at sufficiently high fugacity on subsets of $\mathbb Z^d$ with appropriate boundary conditions and an efficient sampling algorithm for the ferromagnetic Potts model on the discrete torus $(\mathbb Z/n \mathbb Z)^d$ at sufficiently low temperature.

Critical Ising model on random triangulations of the disk: enumeration and local limits
Published in Commun. Math. Phys., 374(3):1577-1643, 2020 • View Publication • BIB
We consider Boltzmann random triangulations coupled to the Ising model on their faces, under Dobrushin boundary conditions and at the critical point of the model. The first part of this paper computes explicitly the partition function of this model by solving its Tutte's equation, extending a previous result by Bernardi and Bousquet-Mélou to the model with Dobrushin boundary conditions. We show that the perimeter exponent of the model is 7/3 in contrast to the exponent 5/2 for uniform triangulations. In the second part, we show that the model has a local limit in distribution when the two components of the Dobrushin boundary tend to infinity one after the other. The local limit is constructed explicitly using the peeling process along an Ising interface. Moreover, we show that the main interface in the local limit touches the (infinite) boundary almost surely only finitely many times, a behavior opposite to that of the Bernoulli percolation on uniform maps. Some scaling limits closely related to the perimeters of finite clusters are also obtained.

Dungeons and Dragons: Combinatorics for the $dP_3$ Quiver
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we utilize the machinery of cluster algebras, quiver mutations, and brane tilings to study a variety of historical enumerative combinatorics questions all under one roof. Previous work [Zha, LMNT14], which arose during the second author's monitorship of undergraduates, and more recently of both authors [LM17], analyzed the cluster algebra associated to the cone over $\mathbf{dP_3}$, the del Pezzo surface of degree $6$ ($\mathbb{CP}^2$ blown up at three points). By investigating sequences of toric mutations, those occurring only at vertices with two incoming and two outgoing arrows, in this cluster algebra, we obtained a family of cluster variables that could be parameterized by $\mathbb{Z}^3$ and whose Laurent expansions had elegant combinatorial interpretations in terms of dimer partition functions (in most cases). While the earlier work [Zha, LMNT14, LM17] focused exclusively on one possible initial seed for this cluster algebra, there are in total four relevant initial seeds (up to graph isomorphism). In the current work, we explore the combinatorics of the Laurent expansions from these other initial seeds and how this allows us to relate enumerations of perfect matchings on Dungeons to Dragons.
