Generalized parking functions, descent numbers, and chain polytopes of ribbon posets
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider the inversion enumerator I_n(q), which counts labeled trees or, equivalently, parking functions. This polynomial has a natural extension to generalized parking functions. Substituting q = -1 into this generalized polynomial produces the number of permutations with a certain descent set. In the classical case, this result implies the formula I_n(-1) = E_n, the number of alternating permutations. We give a combinatorial proof of these formulas based on the involution principle. We also give a geometric interpretation of these identities in terms of volumes of generalized chain polytopes of ribbon posets. The volume of such a polytope is given by a sum over generalized parking functions, which is similar to an expression for the volume of the parking function polytope of Pitman and Stanley.
Counting Defective Parking Functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
Suppose that $n$ drivers each choose a preferred parking space in a linear car park with $m$ spaces. Each driver goes to the chosen space and parks there if it is free, and otherwise takes the first available space with larger number (if any). If all drivers park successfully, the sequence of choices is called a parking function. In general, if $k$ drivers fail to park, we have a \emph{defective parking function} of \emph{defect} $k$. Let $\cp(n,m,k)$ be the number of such functions. In this paper, we establish a recurrence relation for the numbers $\cp(n,m,k)$, and express this as an equation for a three-variable generating function. We solve this equation using the kernel method, and extract the coefficients explicitly: it turns out that the cumulative totals are partial sums in Abel's binomial identity. Finally, we compute the asymptotics of $\cp(n,m,k)$. In particular, for the case $m=n$, if choices are made independently at random, the limiting distribution of the defect (the number of drivers who fail to park), scaled by the square root of $n$, is the Rayleigh distribution. On the other hand, in case $m=ω(n)$, the probability that all spaces are occupied tends asymptotically to one.

$G$-Parking Functions, Acyclic Orientations and Spanning Trees
Published in B. Benson, D. Chakrabarty, P. Tetali. Discrete Mathematics 310 (2010) 1340-1353 • View Publication • BIB
Given an undirected graph $G=(V,E)$, and a designated vertex $q\in V$, the notion of a $G$-parking function (with respect to $q$) was independently developed and studied by various authors, and has recently gained renewed attention. This notion generalizes the classical notion of a parking function associated with the complete graph. In this work, we study properties of {\em maximum} $G$-parking functions and provide a new bijection between them and the set of spanning trees of $G$ with no broken circuit. As a case study, we specialize some of our results to the graph corresponding to the discrete $n$-cube $Q_n$. We present the article in an expository self-contained form, since we found the combinatorial aspects of $G$-parking functions somewhat scattered in the literature, typically treated in conjunction with sandpile models and closely related chip-firing games.

The Hecke group algebra of a Coxeter group and its representation theory
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let W be a finite Coxeter group. We define its Hecke-group algebra by gluing together appropriately its group algebra and its 0-Hecke algebra. We describe in detail this algebra (dimension, several bases, conjectural presentation, combinatorial construction of simple and indecomposable projective modules, Cartan map) and give several alternative equivalent definitions (as symmetry preserving operator algebra, as poset algebra, as commutant algebra, ...). In type A, the Hecke-group algebra can be described as the algebra generated simultaneously by the elementary transpositions and the elementary sorting operators acting on permutations. It turns out to be closely related to the monoid algebras of respectively nondecreasing functions and nondecreasing parking functions, the representation theory of which we describe as well. This defines three towers of algebras, and we give explicitly the Grothendieck algebras and coalgebras given respectively by their induction products and their restriction coproducts. This yields some new interpretations of the classical bases of quasi-symmetric and noncommutative symmetric functions as well as some new bases.

Interpreting the two variable Distance enumerator of the Shi hyperplane arrangement
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give an interpretation of the coefficients of the two variable refinement $D_{\Sh_n}(q,t)$ of the distance enumerator of the Shi hyperplane arrangement $\Sh_n$ in $n$ dimensions. This two variable refinement was defined by Stanley \cite{stan-rota} for the general $r$-extended Shi hyperplane arrangements. We give an interpretation when $r=1$. We define three natural three-dimensional partitions of the number $(n+1)^{n-1}$. The first arises from parking functions of length $n$, the second from special posets on $n$ vertices defined by Athanasiadis and the third from spanning trees on $n+1$ vertices. We call the three partitions as the parking partition, the tree-poset partition and the spanning-tree partition respectively. We show that one of the parts of the parking partition is identical to the number of edge-labelled trees with label set $\{1,2,...,n\}$ on $n+1$ unlabelled vertices. We prove that the parking partition majorises the tree-poset partition and conjecture that the spanning-tree partition also majorises the tree-poset partition.

Multiparking Functions, Graph Searching, and the Tutte Polynomial
A parking function of length n is a sequence (b_1, b_2,..., b_n) of nonnegative integers whose nondecreasing rearrangement (a_1, a_2,...,a_n) has the property that a_i < i for every i. A well-known result about parking functions is that the polynomial P_n(q), which enumerates the complements of parking functions by the sum of their terms, is the generating function for the number of connected graphs by the number of excess edges when evaluated at (1+q). In this paper we extend this result to arbitrary connected graphs G. In general the polynomial that encodes information about subgraphs of G is the Tutte polynomial, which is the generating function for two parameters, namely the internal and external activities, associated with the spanning trees of G. We define G-multiparking functions, which generalize the G-parking functions that Postnikov and Shapiro introduced in the study of certain quotients of the polynomial ring. We construct a family of algorithmic bijections between the spanning forests of a graph G and the G-multiparking functions. In particular, the bijection induced by the breadth-first search leads to a new characterization of external activity, and hence a representation of Tutte polynomial by the reversed sum of G-multiparking functions.

Representation theories of some towers of algebras related to the symmetric groups and their Hecke algebras
We study the representation theory of three towers of algebras which are related to the symmetric groups and their Hecke algebras. The first one is constructed as the algebras generated simultaneously by the elementary transpositions and the elementary sorting operators acting on permutations. The two others are the monoid algebras of nondecreasing functions and nondecreasing parking functions. For these three towers, we describe the structure of simple and indecomposable projective modules, together with the Cartan map. The Grothendieck algebras and coalgebras given respectively by the induction product and the restriction coproduct are also given explicitly. This yields some new interpretations of the classical bases of quasi-symmetric and noncommutative symmetric functions as well as some new bases.

Commutative combinatorial Hopf algebras
Published in J. Algebraic Combin. 28 (2008), no. 1, 65--95 • View Publication • BIB
We propose several constructions of commutative or cocommutative Hopf algebras based on various combinatorial structures, and investigate the relations between them. A commutative Hopf algebra of permutations is obtained by a general construction based on graphs, and its non-commutative dual is realized in three different ways, in particular as the Grossman-Larson algebra of heap ordered trees. Extensions to endofunctions, parking functions, set compositions, set partitions, planar binary trees and rooted forests are discussed. Finally, we introduce one-parameter families interpolating between different structures constructed on the same combinatorial objects.

Spanning trees in complete uniform hypergraphs and a connection to extended r-Shi hyperplane arrangements
We give a Cayley type formula to count the number of spanning trees in the complete r-uniform hypergraph for all r >= 3. Similar to the bijection between spanning trees in complete graphs and Parking functions, we derive a bijection from spanning trees of the complete (r+1)-uniform hypergraph which arise from a fixed r-perfect matching and r-Parking functions. We observe a simple consequence of this bijection in terms of the number of regions of the extended Shi arrangement.

Noncrossing partitions in surprising locations
Published • View Publication • BIB
Certain mathematical structures make a habit of reoccuring in the most diverse list of settings. Some obvious examples exhibiting this intrusive type of behavior include the Fibonacci numbers, the Catalan numbers, the quaternions, and the modular group. In this article, the focus is on a lesser known example: the noncrossing partition lattice. The focus of the article is a gentle introduction to the lattice itself in three of its many guises: as a way to encode parking functions, as a key part of the foundations of noncommutative probability, and as a building block for a contractible space acted on by a braid group. Since this article is aimed primarily at nonspecialists, each area is briefly introduced along the way.

Hopf algebras and dendriform structures arising from parking functions
Published in Fundamenta Mathematicae 193 (2007), 189-241 • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a graded Hopf algebra based on the set of parking functions (hence of dimension (n+1)^{n-1} in degree n). This algebra can be embedded into a noncommutative polynomial algebra in infinitely many variables. We determine its structure, and show that it admits natural quotients and subalgebras whose graded components have dimensions respectively given by the Schroder numbers (plane trees), the Catalan numbers, and powers of 3. These smaller algebras are always bialgebras and belong to some family of di- or tri-algebras occuring in the works of Loday and Ronco. Moreover, the fundamental notion of parkization allows one to endow the set of parking functions of fixed length with an associative multiplication (different from the one coming from the Shi arrangement), leading to a generalization of the internal product of symmetric functions. Several of the intermediate algebras are stable under this operation. Among them, one finds the Solomon descent algebra but also a new algebra based on a Catalan set, admitting the Solomon algebra as a left ideal.

Parking functions and triangulation of the associahedron

We show that a minimal triangulation of the associahedron (Stasheff polytope) of dimension n is made of (n+1)^{n-1} simplices. We construct a natural bijection with the set of parking functions from a new interpretation of parking functions in terms of shuffles.

A refinement of Cayley's formula for trees
Published in Electronic J. Combin. 11, no. 2 (2004-6), R27 • View Publication • BIB
A proper vertex of a rooted tree with totally ordered vertices is a vertex that is less than all its proper descendants. We count several kinds of labeled rooted trees and forests by the number of proper vertices. Our results are all expressed in terms of the polynomials P_n(a,b,c)= c(a+(n-1)b+c)(2a+(n-2)b+c)...((n-1)a+b+c) which reduce to (n+1)^{n-1} for a=b=c=1. Our study of proper vertices was motivated by A. Postnikov's hook length formula for binary trees (arXiv:math.CO/0507163), which was also proved by W. Y. C. Chen and L. L. M. Yang (arXiv:math.CO/0507163) and generalized by R. R. X. Du and F. Liu (arXiv:math.CO/0501147). Our approach gives a new proof of Du and Liu's results and gives new hook length formulas. We also find an interpretation of the polynomials P_n(a,b,c) in terms of parking functions: we count parking functions according to the number of cars that park in their preferred parking spaces.

Combinatorics and Geometry of Higher Level Weyl Modules
Published in AMS Transl., Ser. 2, 221 (2007) • View Publication • BIB
A higher level analog of Weyl modules over multi-variable currents is proposed. It is shown that the sum of their dual spaces form a commutative algebra. The structure of these modules and the geometry of the projective spectrum of this algebra is studied for the currents of dimension one and two. Along the way we prove some particular cases of the conjectures in [FL1] and propose a generalization of the notion of parking function representations.

Chains in the Bruhat order
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study a family of polynomials whose values express degrees of Schubert varieties in the generalized complex flag manifold G/B. The polynomials are given by weighted sums over saturated chains in the Bruhat order. We derive several explicit formulas for these polynomials, and investigate their relations with Schubert polynomials, harmonic polynomials, Demazure characters, and generalized Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. In the second half of the paper, we concern with the case of to the classical flag manifold of Lie type A and discuss related combinatorial objects: flagged Schur polynomials, 312-avoiding permutations, generalized Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes, the inverse Schubert-Kostka matrix, parking functions, and binary trees.

Parking functions and Haglund--Loehr data
A parking function is a sequence of N nonnegative integers majorated by a permutation of the set {0, ..., N-1}. We provide a way to encode parking functions by data suggested by J.Haglund and N.Loehr. This coding is compared with another one proposed earlier by M.Shapiro and the author.

Parking Functions and Descent Algebras

Free quasi-symmetric functions of arbitrary level
We introduce analogues of the Hopf algebra of Free quasi-symmetric functions with bases labelled by colored permutations. As applications, we recover in a simple way the descent algebras associated with wreath products $Γ\wr\SG_n$ and the corresponding generalizations of quasi-symmetric functions. Also, we obtain Hopf algebras of colored parking functions, colored non-crossing partitions and parking functions of type $B$.
