The primitives of the Hopf algebra of noncommutative symmetric functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let NSymm be the Hopf algebra of noncommutative symmetric functions over the integers. In this paper a description is given of its Lie algebra of primitives over the integers, Prim(NSymm), in terms of recursion formulas. For each of the primitives of a basis of Prim(NSymm), indexed by Lyndon words, there is a recursively given divided power series over it. This gives another proof of the theorem that the algebra of quasi-symmetric functions is free over the integers.

Explicit polynomial generators for the ring of quasi-symmetric functions over the integers
Published • View Publication • BIB
In [5, 6] it has been proved that the ring of quasisymmetric functions over the integers is free polynomial, see also [4]. This is a matter that has been of great interest since 1972; for instance because of the role this statement plays in a classification theory for noncommutative formal groups that has been in development since then, see [2] and [9] and the references in the latter. Meanwhile quasisymmetric functions have found many more aplications, [3]. However, the proofs in [5, 6] do not give explicit polynomial generators for QSymm over the integers. In this note I give a (really quite simple) set of polynomial generators for QSymm over the integers.

A unique factorization theorem for matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the combinatorial, algebraic and geometric properties of the free product operation on matroids. After giving cryptomorphic definitions of free product in terms of independent sets, bases, circuits, closure, flats and rank function, we show that free product, which is a noncommutative operation, is associative and respects matroid duality. The free product of matroids $M$ and $N$ is maximal with respect to the weak order among matroids having $M$ as a submatroid, with complementary contraction equal to $N$. Any minor of the free product of $M$ and $N$ is a free product of a repeated truncation of the corresponding minor of $M$ with a repeated Higgs lift of the corresponding minor of $N$. We characterize, in terms of their cyclic flats, matroids that are irreducible with respect to free product, and prove that the factorization of a matroid into a free product of irreducibles is unique up to isomorphism. We use these results to determine, for K a field of characteristic zero, the structure of the minor coalgebra $\cal C$ of a family of matroids $\cal M$ that is closed under formation of minors and free products: namely, $\cal C$ is cofree, cogenerated by the set of irreducible matroids belonging to $\cal M$.

The Free product of Matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a noncommutative binary operation on matroids, called free product. We show that this operation respects matroid duality, and has the property that, given only the cardinalities, an ordered pair of matroids may be recovered, up to isomorphism, from its free product. We use these results to give a short proof of Welsh's 1969 conjecture, which provides a progressive lower bound for the number of isomorphism classes of matroids on an n-element set.

Cumulants in Noncommutative Probability Theory IV. De Finetti's Theorem and $L^p$-Inequalities
Published in J. Funct. Anal. 239 (2006), no. 1, 214-246 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we collect a few results about exchangeability systems in which crossing cumulants vanish, which we call noncrossing exchangeability systems. The main result is a free version of De Finetti's theorem, characterising amalgamated free products as noncrossing exchangeability systems which satisfy a so-called weak singleton condition. The main tool in the proof is an $L^p$-inequality with uniformly bounded constants for i.i.d. sequences in noncrossing exchangeability systems.

A LL-lattice reformulation of arithmetree over planar rooted trees. Part II
We continue our reformulation of free dendriform algebras, dealing this time with the free dendriform trialgebra generated be Y over planar rooted trees. We propose a 'deformation' of a vectorial coding used in Part I, giving a LL-lattice on rooted planar trees according to the terminology of A. Blass and B. E. Sagan. The three main operations on trees become explicit, giving thus a complementary approach to a very recent work of P. palacios and M. Ronco. Our parenthesis framework allows a more tractable reformulation to explore the properties of the underlying lattice describing operations and simplify a proof of a fundamental theorem related to arithmetics over trees, the so-called arithmetree. Arithmetree is then viewed as a noncommutative extention of (N,+,x), the integers being played by the corollas. We give also two representations of the super Catalan numbers or Schroder numbers.

On Hopf algebra structures over operads
We study P-Hopf algebras with one coassociative cooperation over different operads P. For example, we consider the Loday-Ronco dendriform Hopf algebra and its isomorphisms with the noncommutative planar Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra and with a Hopf algebra of Brouder and Frabetti. We focus on Hopf algebra structures over free operads, like the operad Mag freely generated by a non-commutative non-associative binary operation, and the operad of Stasheff polytopes. In order to describe the operads of primitive elements we prove an analogon of the Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt theorem. We determine the generating series for these operads and show that the dimension of PrimMag(n) is related to the log-Catalan numbers. By a recursive method we show how, for small n, these spaces can be described as modules over the symmetric groups.

Markov bases for noncommutative Fourier analysis of ranked data
Published in Journal of Symbolic Computation, Volume 41, Issue 2, February 2006, Pages 182-195 • View Publication • BIB
To calibrate Fourier analysis of $S_5$ ranking data by Markov chain Monte Carlo techniques, a set of moves (Markov basis) is needed. We calculate this basis, and use it to provide a new statistical analysis of two data sets. The calculation involves a large Gröbner basis computation (45825 generators), but reduction to a minimal basis and reduction by natural symmetries leads to a remarkably small basis (14 elements). Although the Gröbner basis calculation is infeasible for $S_6$, we exploit the symmetry of the problem to calculate a Markov basis for $S_6$ with 7,113,390 elements in 58 symmetry classes. We improve a bound on the degree of the generators for a Markov basis for $S_n$ and conjecture that this ideal is generated in degree 3.

An introduction to harmonic analysis on the infinite symmetric group
Published in In: Asymptotic Combinatorics with Applications to Mathematical Physics (A.M.Vershik, ed.), Springer LNM 1815 (2003), 127-160 • View Publication • BIB
The aim of the present survey paper is to provide an accessible introduction to a new chapter of representation theory - harmonic analysis for noncommutative groups with infinite-dimensional dual space. I omitted detailed proofs but tried to explain the main ideas of the theory and its connections with other fields. The fact that irreducible representations of the groups in question depend on infinitely many parameters leads to a number of new effects which never occurred in conventional noncommutative harmonic analysis. A link with stochastic point processes is especially emphasized. The exposition focuses on a single group, the infinite symmetric group. The reason is that presently this particular example is worked out the most. Furthermore, the infinite symmetric group can serve as a very good model for more complicated groups like the infinite-dimensional unitary group.

Noncommutative algebras related with Schubert calculus on Coxeter groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
For any finite Coxeter system $(W,S)$ we construct a certain noncommutative algebra, so-called {\it bracket algebra}, together with a familiy of commuting elements, so-called {\it Dunkl elements.} Dunkl elements conjecturally generate an algebra which is canonically isomorphic to the coinvariant algebra of the group $W.$ We prove this conjecture for classical Coxeter groups and $I_2(m)$. We define a ``quantization'' and a multiparameter deformation of our construction and show that for Lie groups of classical type and $G_2,$ the algebra generated by Dunkl elements in the quantized bracket algebra is canonically isomorphic to the small quantum cohomology ring of the corresponding flag variety, as described by B. Kim. For crystallographic Coxeter systems we define {\it quantum Bruhat representation} of the corresponding bracket algebra. We study in more detail relations and structure of $B_n$-, $D_n$- and $G_2$-bracket algebras, and as an application, discover {\it Pieri type formula} in the $B_n$-bracket algebra. As a corollary, we obtain Pieri type formula for multiplication of arbitrary $B_n$-Schubert classes by some special ones. Our Pieri type formula is a generalization of Pieri's formulas obtained by A. Lascoux and M.-P. Schützenberger for flag varieties of type $A.$ We also introduce a super-version of the bracket algebra together with a family of pairwise anticommutative elements which describes ``noncommutative differential geometry on a finite Coxeter group'' in a sense of S. Majid.

Characterization of spectral triples: A combinatorial approach
We describe a general technique to study Dirac operators on noncommutative spaces under some additional assumptions. The main idea is to capture the compact resolvent condition in a combinatorial set up. Using this, we then prove that for a certain class of representations of the C^*-algebra C(SU_q(\ell+1)), any Dirac operator that diagonalises with respect to the natural basis of the underlying Hilbert space must have trivial sign.

The peak algebra and the Hecke-Clifford algebras at $q=0$
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 107 (2004), no. 1, 1-19 • View Publication • BIB
Using the formalism of noncommutative symmetric functions, we derive the basic theory of the peak algebra of symmetric groups and of its graded Hopf dual. Our main result is to provide a representation theoretical interpretation of the peak algebra and its graded dual as Grothendieck rings of the tower of Hecke-Clifford algebras at $q=0$.

Linearization coefficients for orthogonal polynomials using stochastic processes
Published in Annals of Probability 2005, Vol. 33, No. 1, 114-136 • View Publication • BIB
Given a basis for a polynomial ring, the coefficients in the expansion of a product of some of its elements in terms of this basis are called linearization coefficients. These coefficients have combinatorial significance for many classical families of orthogonal polynomials. Starting with a stochastic process and using the stochastic measures machinery introduced by Rota and Wallstrom, we calculate and give an interpretation of linearization coefficients for a number of polynomial families. The processes involved may have independent, freely independent or q-independent increments. The use of noncommutative stochastic processes extends the range of applications significantly, allowing us to treat Hermite, Charlier, Chebyshev, free Charlier and Rogers and continuous big q-Hermite polynomials. We also show that the q-Poisson process is a Markov process.

Cumulants in noncommutative probability I. Noncommutative Exchangeability Systems
Published in Math. Z. 248 (2004), 67--100 • View Publication • BIB
Cumulants linearize convolution of measures. We use a formula of Good to define noncommutative cumulants in a very general setting. It turns out that the essential property needed is exchangeability of random variables. Roughly speaking the formula says that cumulants are moments of a certain ``discrete Fourier transform'' of a random variable. This provides a simple unified method to understand the known examples of cumulants, like classical, free cumulants and various q-cumulants.

Cumulants in Noncommutative Probability Theory III. Creation- and annihilation operators on Fock spaces

Fock space constructions give rise to natural exchangeable families and are thus well suited for cumulant calculations. In this paper we develop some general formulas and compute cumulants for generalized Toeplitz operators, notably for q-Fock spaces, previously considered by M. Anshelevich and A. Nica, and Fock spaces for characters of the infinite symmetric group, which where constructed by Bozejko and Guta. An expression for cumulants in terms of the cycle-cover polynomials of certain directed graphs is obtained in this case.

Co-Addition for free Non-Associative Algebras and the Hausdorff Series
Published in J. Algebra 265 (2003), no. 1, 264--284. • View Publication • BIB
Generalizations of the series exp and log to noncommutative non-associative and other types of algebras were considered by M.Lazard, and recently by V.Drensky and L.Gerritzen. There is a unique power series exp(x) in one non-associative variable x such that exp(x)exp(x)=exp(2x), exp'(0)=1. We call the unique series H=H(x,y) in two non-associative variables satisfying exp(H)=exp(x)exp(y) the non-associative Hausdorff series, and we show that the homogeneous components of H are primitive elements with respect to the co-addition for non-associative variables. We describe the space of primitive elements for the co-addition in non-associative variables using Taylor expansion and a projector onto the algebra A_0 of constants for the partial derivations. By a theorem of Kurosh, A_0 is a free algebra. We describe a procedure to construct a free algebra basis consisting of primitive elements.

Combinatorics of Rooted Trees and Hopf Algebras
Published in Trans. AMS 355 (2003), 3795-3811 • View Publication • BIB
We begin by considering the graded vector space with a basis consisting of rooted trees, graded by the count of non-root vertices. We define two linear operators on this vector space, the growth and pruning operators, which respectively raise and lower grading; their commutator is the operator that multiplies a rooted tree by its number of vertices. We define an inner product with respect to which the growth and pruning operators are adjoint, and obtain several results about the multiplicities associated with each operator. The symmetric algebra on the vector space of rooted trees (after a degree shift) can be endowed with a coproduct to make a Hopf algebra; this was defined by Kreimer in connection with renormalization. We extend the growth and pruning operators, as well as the inner product mentioned above, to Kreimer's Hopf algebra. On the other hand, the vector space of rooted trees itself can be given a noncommutative multiplication: with an appropriate coproduct, this gives the Hopf algebra of Grossman and Larson. We show the inner product on rooted trees leads to an isomorphism of the Grossman-Larson Hopf algebra with the graded dual of Kreimer's Hopf algebra, correcting an earlier result of Panaite.

Arithmetree
Published in J. of Algebra 258 (1), (2002), 275-309. • View Publication • BIB
We construct an addition and a multiplication on the set of planar binary trees, closely related to addition and multiplication on the integers. This gives rise to a new kind of (noncommutative) arithmetic theory. The price to pay for this generalization is that, first the addition is not commutative, second the multiplication is distributive with the addition only on the left. This algebraic structure is the "exponent part" of the free dendriform algebra on one generator, a notion related to several other types of algebras. In the second part we extend this theory to all the planar trees. Then it is related to the free dendriform trialgebra as constructed in Loday-Ronco's paper "Une dualite' entre simplexes standards et polytopes de Stasheff".

The problem of harmonic analysis on the infinite-dimensional unitary group
Published in J. Funct. Anal. 205 (2003), no. 2, 464--524 • View Publication • BIB
The goal of harmonic analysis on a (noncommutative) group is to decompose the most `natural' unitary representations of this group (like the regular representation) on irreducible ones. The infinite-dimensional unitary group U(infinity) is one of the basic examples of `big' groups whose irreducible representations depend on infinitely many parameters. Our aim is to explain what the harmonic analysis on U(infinity) consists of. We deal with unitary representations of a reasonable class, which are in 1-1 correspondence with characters (central, positive definite, normalized functions on U(infinity)). The decomposition of any representation of this class is described by a probability measure (called spectral measure) on the space of indecomposable characters. The indecomposable characters were found by Dan Voiculescu in 1976. The main result of the present paper consists in explicitly constructing a 4-parameter family of `natural' representations and computing their characters. We view these representations as a substitute of the nonexisting regular representation of U(infinity). We state the problem of harmonic analysis on U(infinity) as the problem of computing the spectral measures for these `natural' representations. A solution to this problem is given in the next paper math/0109194, joint with Alexei Borodin. We also prove a few auxiliary general results. In particular, it is proved that the spectral measure of any character of U(infinity) can be approximated by a sequence of (discrete) spectral measures for the restrictions of the character to the compact unitary groups U(N). This fact is a starting point for computing spectral measures.
