Motivated by work of Buch on set-valued tableaux in relation to the K-theory of the Grassmannian, we study six combinatorial Hopf algebras. These Hopf algebras can be thought of as K-theoretic analogues of the by now classical ``square'' of Hopf algebras consisting of symmetric functions, quasisymmetric functions, noncommutative symmetric functions and the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra of permutations. In addition, we develop a theory of set-valued P-partitions and study three new families of symmetric functions which are weight generating functions of reverse plane partitions, weak set-valued tableaux and valued-set tableaux.

The Bogoliubov recursion is a particular procedure appearing in the process of renormalization in perturbative quantum field theory. It provides convergent expressions for otherwise divergent integrals. We develop here a theory of functional identities for noncommutative Rota-Baxter algebras which is shown to encode, among others, this process in the context of Connes-Kreimer's Hopf algebra of renormalization. Our results generalize the seminal Cartier-Rota theory of classical Spitzer-type identities for commutative Rota-Baxter algebras. In the classical, commutative, case, these identities can be understood as deriving from the theory of symmetric functions. Here, we show that an analogous property holds for noncommutative Rota-Baxter algebras. That is, we show that functional identities in the noncommutative setting can be derived from the theory of noncommutative symmetric functions. Lie idempotents, and particularly the Dynkin idempotent play a crucial role in the process. Their action on the pro-unipotent groups such as those of perturbative renormalization is described in detail along the way.

Using a noncommutative analog of Chevalley's decomposition of polynomials into symmetric polynomials times coinvariants due to Bergeron, Reutenauer, Rosas, and Zabrocki we compute the graded Frobenius series for their two sets of noncommutative harmonics with respect to the left action of the symmetric group (acting on variables). We use these results to derive the Frobenius series for the enveloping algebra of the derived free Lie algebra in n variables.

A Rota-Baxter operator of weight $λ$ is an abstraction of both the integral operator (when $λ=0$) and the summation operator (when $λ=1$). We similarly define a differential operator of weight $λ$ that includes both the differential operator (when $λ=0$) and the difference operator (when $λ=1$). We further consider an algebraic structure with both a differential operator of weight $λ$ and a Rota-Baxter operator of weight $λ$ that are related in the same way that the differential operator and the integral operator are related by the First Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. We construct free objects in the corresponding categories. In the commutative case, the free objects are given in terms of generalized shuffles, called mixable shuffles. In the noncommutative case, the free objects are given in terms of angularly decorated rooted forests. As a byproduct, we obtain structures of a differential algebra on decorated and undecorated planar rooted forests.

We study the free product of rooted graphs and its various decompositions using quantum probabilistic methods. We show that the free product of rooted graphs is canonically associated with free independence, which completes the proof of the conjecture that there exists a product of rooted graphs canonically associated with each notion of noncommutative independence which arises in the axiomatic theory. Using the `orthogonal product' of rooted graphs, we decompose the branches of the free product of rooted graphs as `alternating orthogonal products'. This leads to alternating decompositions of the free product itself, with the star product or the comb product followed by orthogonal products. These decompositions correspond to the recently studied decompositions of the free additive convolution of probability measures in terms boolean and orthogonal convolutions, or monotone and orthogonal convolutions. We also introduce a new type of `quantum decomposition' of the free product of graphs, where the distance partition of the set of vertices is taken with respect to a set of vertices instead of a single vertex. We show that even in the case of widely studied graphs this yields new and more complete information on their spectral properties, like spectral measures of a (usually infinite) set of cyclic vectors under the action of the adjacency matrix.

In the classical theory of formal languages, finite state automata allow to recognize the words of a rational subset of $Σ^*$ where $Σ$ is a set of symbols (or the alphabet). Now, given a semiring $(\K,+,.)$, one can construct $\K$-subsets of $Σ^*$ in the sense of Eilenberg, that are alternatively called noncommutative formal power series for which a framework very similar to language theory has been constructed Particular noncommutative formal power series, which are called rational series, are the behaviour of a family of weighted automata (or $\K$-automata). In order to get an efficient encoding, it may be interesting to point out one of them with the smallest number of states. Minimization processes of $\K$-automata already exist for $\K$ being: {\bf a)} a field, {\bf b)} a noncommutative field, {\bf c)} a PID . When $\K$ is the bolean semiring, such a minimization process (with isomorphisms of minimal objects) is known within the category of deterministic automata. Minimal automata have been proved to be isomorphic in cases {\bf (a)} and {\bf (b)}. But the proof given for (b) is not constructive. In fact, it lays on the existence of a basis for a submodule of $\K^n$. Here we give an independent algorithm which reproves this fact and an example of a pair of nonisomorphic minimal automata. Moreover, we examine the possibility of extending {\bf (c)}. To this end, we provide an {\em Effective Minimization Process} (or {\em EMP}) which can be used for more general sets of coefficients.

We present here theoretical results coming from the implementation of the package called AMULT (automata with multiplicities in several noncommutative variables). We show that classical formulas are ``almost every time'' optimal, characterize the dual laws preserving rationality and also relators that are compatible with these laws.
Representation theories of some towers of algebras related to the symmetric groups and their Hecke algebras
We study the representation theory of three towers of algebras which are related to the symmetric groups and their Hecke algebras. The first one is constructed as the algebras generated simultaneously by the elementary transpositions and the elementary sorting operators acting on permutations. The two others are the monoid algebras of nondecreasing functions and nondecreasing parking functions. For these three towers, we describe the structure of simple and indecomposable projective modules, together with the Cartan map. The Grothendieck algebras and coalgebras given respectively by the induction product and the restriction coproduct are also given explicitly. This yields some new interpretations of the classical bases of quasi-symmetric and noncommutative symmetric functions as well as some new bases.

The construction of the universal ring of Witt vectors is related to Lazard's factorizations of free monoids by means of a noncommutative analogue. This is done by associating to a code a specialization of noncommutative symmetric functions.

Fomin and Kirillov initiated a line of research into the realization of the cohomology and $K$-theory of generalized flag varieties $G/B$ as commutative subalgebras of certain noncommutative algebras. This approach has several advantages, which we discuss. This paper contains the most comprehensive result in a series of papers related to the mentioned line of research. More precisely, we give a model for the $T$-equivariant $K$-theory of a generalized flag variety $K_T(G/B)$ in terms of a certain braided Hopf algebra called the Nichols-Woronowicz algebra. Our model is based on the Chevalley-type multiplication formula for $K_T(G/B)$ due to the first author and Postnikov; this formula is stated using certain operators defined in terms of so-called alcove paths (and the corresponding affine Weyl group). Our model is derived using a type-independent and concise approach.
Polynomial realizations of some trialgebras

Certain mathematical structures make a habit of reoccuring in the most diverse list of settings. Some obvious examples exhibiting this intrusive type of behavior include the Fibonacci numbers, the Catalan numbers, the quaternions, and the modular group. In this article, the focus is on a lesser known example: the noncrossing partition lattice. The focus of the article is a gentle introduction to the lattice itself in three of its many guises: as a way to encode parking functions, as a key part of the foundations of noncommutative probability, and as a building block for a contractible space acted on by a braid group. Since this article is aimed primarily at nonspecialists, each area is briefly introduced along the way.

We introduce a graded Hopf algebra based on the set of parking functions (hence of dimension (n+1)^{n-1} in degree n). This algebra can be embedded into a noncommutative polynomial algebra in infinitely many variables. We determine its structure, and show that it admits natural quotients and subalgebras whose graded components have dimensions respectively given by the Schroder numbers (plane trees), the Catalan numbers, and powers of 3.
These smaller algebras are always bialgebras and belong to some family of di- or tri-algebras occuring in the works of Loday and Ronco.
Moreover, the fundamental notion of parkization allows one to endow the set of parking functions of fixed length with an associative multiplication (different from the one coming from the Shi arrangement), leading to a generalization of the internal product of symmetric functions. Several of the intermediate algebras are stable under this operation. Among them, one finds the Solomon descent algebra but also a new algebra based on a Catalan set, admitting the Solomon algebra as a left ideal.

A Rota-Baxter algebra, also known as a Baxter algebra, is an algebra with a linear operator satisfying a relation, called the Rota-Baxter relation, that generalizes the integration by parts formula. Most of the studies on Rota-Baxter algebras have been for commutative algebras. Two constructions of free commutative Rota-Baxter algebras were obtained by Rota and Cartier in the 1970s and a third one by Keigher and one of the authors in the 1990s in terms of mixable shuffles. Recently, noncommutative Rota-Baxter algebras have appeared both in physics in connection with the work of Connes and Kreimer on renormalization in perturbative quantum field theory, and in mathematics related to the work of Loday and Ronco on dendriform dialgebras and trialgebras.
This paper uses rooted trees and forests to give explicit constructions of free noncommutative Rota--Baxter algebras on modules and sets. This highlights the combinatorial nature of Rota--Baxter algebras and facilitates their further study. As an application, we obtain the unitarization of Rota-Baxter algebras.
