We study the Bergman complex B(M) of a matroid M: a polyhedral complex which arises in algebraic geometry, but which we describe purely combinatorially. We prove that a natural subdivision of the Bergman complex of M is a geometric realization of the order complex of its lattice of flats. In addition, we show that the Bergman fan B'(K_n) of the graphical matroid of the complete graph K_n is homeomorphic to the space of phylogenetic trees T_n.

We give an explicit natural identification between the quiver coefficients of Buch and Fulton, decomposition coefficients for Schubert polynomials, and the Schubert structure constants for flag manifolds. This is also achieved in K-theory where we give a direct argument that the decomposition coefficients have alternating signs, based on a theorem of Brion, which then implies that the quiver coefficients have alternating signs. Our identification shows that known combinatorial formulas for the latter two numbers give formulas for the quiver coefficients.

This paper summarizes some known results about Appell polynomials and investigates their various analogs. The primary of these are the free Appell polynomials. In the multivariate case, they can be considered as natural analogs of the Appell polynomials among polynomials in non-commuting variables. They also fit well into the framework of free probability. For the free Appell polynomials, a number of combinatorial and "diagram" formulas are proven, such as the formulas for their linearization coefficients. An explicit formula for their generating function is obtained. These polynomials are also martingales for free Levy processes. For more general free Sheffer families, a necessary condition for pseudo-orthogonality is given. Another family investigated are the Kailath-Segall polynomials. These are multivariate polynomials, which share with the Appell polynomials nice combinatorial properties, but are always orthogonal. Their origins lie in the Fock space representations, or in the theory of multiple stochastic integrals. Diagram formulas are proven for these polynomials as well, even in the q-deformed case.

Previously, the author introduced quasirandom permutations, permutations of $\mathbb{Z}_n$ which map intervals to sets with low discrepancy. Here we show that several natural number-theoretic permutations are quasirandom, some very strongly so. Quasirandomness is established via discrete Fourier analysis and the Erdos-Turan inequality, as well as by other means. We apply our results on Sos permutations to make progress on a number of questions relating to the sequence of fractional parts of multiples of an irrational. Several intriguing new open problems are presented throughout the discussion.
A common recursion for Laplacians of matroids and shifted simplicial complexes

A recursion due to Kook expresses the Laplacian eigenvalues of a matroid M in terms of the eigenvalues of its deletion M-e and contraction M/e by a fixed element e, and an error term. We show that this error term is given simply by the Laplacian eigenvalues of the pair (M-e, M/e). We further show that by suitably generalizing deletion and contraction to arbitrary simplicial complexes, the Laplacian eigenvalues of shifted simplicial complexes satisfy this exact same recursion.
We show that the class of simplicial complexes satisfying this recursion is closed under a wide variety of natural operations, and that several specializations of this recursion reduce to basic recursions for natural invariants.
We also find a simple formula for the Laplacian eigenvalues of an arbitrary pair of shifted complexes in terms of a kind of generalized degree sequence.
Dimers, Tilings and Trees

Generalizing results of Temperley, Brooks, Smith, Stone and Tutte and others we describe a natural equivalence between three planar objects: weighted bipartite planar graphs; planar Markov chains; and tilings with convex polygons. This equivalence provides a measure-preserving bijection between dimer coverings of a weighted bipartite planar graph and spanning trees on the corresponding Markov chain. The tilings correspond to harmonic functions on the Markov chain and to ``discrete analytic functions'' on the bipartite graph.
The equivalence is extended to infinite periodic graphs, and we classify the resulting ``almost periodic'' tilings and harmonic functions.

Many combinatorial generating functions can be expressed as combinations of symmetric functions, or extracted as sub-series and specializations from such combinations. Gessel has outlined a large class of symmetric functions for which the resulting generating functions are D-finite. We extend Gessel's work by providing algorithms that compute differential equations these generating functions satisfy in the case they are given as a scalar product of symmetric functions in Gessel's class. Examples of applications to k-regular graphs and Young tableaux with repeated entries are given. Asymptotic estimates are a natural application of our method, which we illustrate on the same model of Young tableaux. We also derive a seemingly new formula for the Kronecker product of the sum of Schur functions with itself.
Elementary divisors of Specht modules
Let H_q(S_n) be the Iwahori-Hecke algebra of the symmetric group. This algebra is semisimple over the rational function field Q(q), where q is an indeterminate, and its irreducible representations over this field are q-analogues S_q(lambda) of the Specht modules of the symmetric group.
The q-Specht modules have an "integral form" which is defined over the Laurent polynomial ring Z_[q,q^{-1}] and they come equipped with a natural bilinear form with values in this ring. Now Z[q,q^{-1}] is not a principal ideal domain. Nonetheless, we try to compute the elementary divisors of the Gram matrix of the bilinear form on S_q(lambda). When they are defined, we give a precise relationship between the elementary divisors of the Specht modules S_q(lambda) and S_q(lambda'), where lambda' is the conjugate partition. We also compute the elementary divisors when lambda is a hook partition and give examples to show that in general elementary divisors do not exist.
The interleaved multichromatic number of a graph

For $k\ge 1$, we consider interleaved $k$-tuple colorings of the nodes of a graph, that is, assignments of $k$ distinct natural numbers to each node in such a way that nodes that are connected by an edge receive numbers that are strictly alternating between them with respect to the relation $<$. If it takes at least $χ_{int}^k(G)$ distinct numbers to provide graph $G$ with such a coloring, then the interleaved multichromatic number of $G$ is $χ_{int}^*(G)=\inf_{k\ge 1}χ_{int}^k(G)/k$ and is known to be given by a function of the simple cycles of $G$ under acyclic orientations if $G$ is connected [1]. This paper contains a new proof of this result. Unlike the original proof, the new proof makes no assumptions on the connectedness of $G$, nor does it resort to the possible applications of interleaved $k$-tuple colorings and their properties.
Conjectures on the cohomology of the Grassmannian
We give a series of successively weaker conjectures on the cohomology ring of the Grassmannian, starting with the Hilbert series of a certain natural filtration.

Pointed pseudo-triangulations are planar minimally rigid graphs embedded in the plane with pointed vertices (adjacent to an angle larger than 180 degrees. In this paper we prove that the opposite statement is also true, namely that planar minimally rigid graphs always admit pointed embeddings, even under certain natural topological and combinatorial constraints. We provide two proofs, which both yield efficient embedding algorithms. One based on Henneberg inductive constructions from combinatorial rigidity theory, the other on a generalization of Tutte's barycentric embeddings to directed graphs.

We give explicit generators for ideals of two classes of subspace arrangements embedded in certain reflection arrangements, generalizing results of Li-Li and Kleitman-Lovasz. We also give minimal generators for the ideals of arrangements that arise in a natural way from the p-skeleton of an n-dimensional cube and discuss conditions under which the generators that we give form a Groebner basis.

Let $f_1=1,f_2=2$ and $f_i=f_{i-1}+f_{i-2}$ for $i>2$ be the sequence of Fibonacci numbers. Let $Φ_h(n)$ be the quantity of partitions of natural number $n$ into $h$ different Fibonacci numbers. In terms of Zeckendorf partition of $n$ I deduce a formula for the function $Φ(n;t):=\sum_{h\geq 1}Φ_h(n)t^h$, and use it to analyze the functions $F(n):=Φ(n;1)$ and $χ(n):=Φ(n;-1)$. I obtain the least upper bound for $F(n)$ when $f_i-1\<n\<f_{i+1}-1$. It implies that $F(n)\<\sqrt{n+1}$ for any natural $n$.
I prove also that $|χ(n)|\<1$, and $\mathop{\lim}\limits_{N\to\infty}\frac{1}{N} \left(χ^2(1)+χ^2(2)\dptχ^2(N)\right)=0$.
For any $k\>2$, I define a special finite set $\mathbb{G}(k)$ of solutions of the equation $F(n)=k$, all solutions can be easily obtained from $\mathbb{G}(k)$. This construction uses a representation of rational numbers as certain continued fractions and provides with a canonical identification $\coprod_{k\>2}\mathbb{G}(k)=\G_+$, where $\G_+$ is the monoid freely generated by the positive rational numbers $<1$.
Let $Ψ(k)$ be the cardinality of $\mathbb{G}(k)$. I prove that, for $i\>2k$ and $k\>2$, the interval $[f_i-1,f_{i+1}-1]$ contains exactly $2Ψ(k)$ solutions of the equation $F(n)=k$ and offer a formula for the Dirichlet generating function of the sequence $Ψ(k)$. I formulate conjectures on the set of minimal solutions of the equations $F(n)=k$ as $k$ varies and pose some questions concerning such solutions.
The number of k-intersections of an intersecting family of r-sets

The Erdos-Ko-Rado theorem tells us how large an intersecting family of r-sets from an n-set can be, while results due to Lovasz and Tuza give bounds on the number of singletons that can occur as pairwise intersections of sets from such a family.
We consider a natural generalization of these problems. Given an intersecting family of r-sets from an n-set and 1\leq k \leq r, how many k-sets can occur as pairwise intersections of sets from the family? For k=r and k=1 this reduces to the problems described above. We answer this question exactly for all values of k and r, when n is sufficiently large. We also characterize the extremal families.
Random MAX SAT, Random MAX CUT, and Their Phase Transitions

Given a 2-SAT formula $F$ consisting of $n$ variables and $\cn$ random clauses, what is the largest number of clauses $\max F$ satisfiable by a single assignment of the variables? We bound the answer away from the trivial bounds of $(3/4)cn$ and $cn$. We prove that for $c<1$, the expected number of clauses satisfiable is $\cn-Θ(1/n)$; for large $c$, it is $((3/4)c + Θ(\sqrt{c}))n$; for $c = 1+\eps$, it is at least $(1+\eps-O(\eps^3))n$ and at most $(1+\eps-Ω(\eps^3/\ln \eps))n$; and in the ``scaling window'' $c= 1+Θ(n^{-1/3})$, it is $cn-Θ(1)$. In particular, just as the decision problem undergoes a phase transition, our optimization problem also undergoes a phase transition at the same critical value $c=1$.
Nearly all of our results are established without reference to the analogous propositions for decision 2-SAT, and as a byproduct we reproduce many of those results, including much of what is known about the 2-SAT scaling window.
We consider ``online'' versions of MAX-2-SAT, and show that for one version, the obvious greedy algorithm is optimal.
We can extend only our simplest MAX-2-SAT results to MAX-k-SAT, but we conjecture a ``MAX-k-SAT limiting function conjecture'' analogous to the folklore satisfiability threshold conjecture, but open even for $k=2$. Neither conjecture immediately implies the other, but it is natural to further conjecture a connection between them.
Finally, for random MAXCUT (the size of a maximum cut in a sparse random graph) we prove analogous results.
q Statistics on $S_n$ and Pattern Avoidance

Natural q analogues of classical statistics on the symmetric groups $S_n$ are introduced; parameters like: the q-length, the q-inversion number, the q-descent number and the q-major index. MacMahon's theorem about the equi-distribution of the inversion number and the reverse major index is generalized to all positive integers q. It is also shown that the q-inversion number and the q-reverse major index are equi-distributed over subsets of permutations avoiding certain patterns. Natural q analogues of the Bell and the Stirling numbers are related to these q statistics -- through the counting of the above pattern-avoiding permutations.
Generating function for K-restricted jagged partitions

We present a natural extension of Andrews' multiple sums counting partitions with difference 2 at distance $k-1$, by deriving the generating function for $K$-restricted jagged partitions.
A jagged partition is a collection of non-negative integers $(n_1,n_2,..., n_m)$ with $n_m\geq 1$ subject to the weakly decreasing conditions $n_i\geq n_{i+1}-1$ and $n_i\geq n_{i+2}$. The $K$-restriction refers to the following additional conditions: $n_i \geq n_{i+K-1} +1$ or $ n_i = n_{i+1}-1 = n_{i+K-2}+1= n_{i+K-1}$. The corresponding generalization of the Rogers-Ramunjan identities is displayed, together with a novel combinatorial interpretation.
Characterization of spectral triples: A combinatorial approach
We describe a general technique to study Dirac operators on noncommutative spaces under some additional assumptions. The main idea is to capture the compact resolvent condition in a combinatorial set up. Using this, we then prove that for a certain class of representations of the C^*-algebra C(SU_q(\ell+1)), any Dirac operator that diagonalises with respect to the natural basis of the underlying Hilbert space must have trivial sign.
Abelianizing the real permutation action via blowups

We present an abelianization of the permutation action of the symmetric group S_n on R^n in analogy to the Batyrev abelianization construction for finite group actions on complex manifolds. The abelianization is provided by a particular De Concini-Procesi wonderful model for the braid arrangement. In fact, we show a stronger result, namely that stabilizers of points in the arrangement model are isomorphic to direct products of Z_2. To prove that, we develop a combinatorial framework for explicitly describing the stabilizers in terms of automorphism groups of set diagrams over families of cubes.
We observe that the natural nested set stratification on the arrangement model is not stabilizer distinguishing with respect to the S_n-action, that is, stabilizers of points are not in general isomorphic on open strata. Motivated by this structural deficiency, we furnish a new stratification of the De Concini-Procesi arrangement model that distinguishes stabilizers.
