Generalized Green functions and graded Hecke algebras
We state a conjecture which gives a combinatorial parametrization of the irreducible tempered representations with real central character of a graded Hecke algebra with unequal labels, associated to a root sytem of type B or C. This conjecture is based on a combinatorial generalization of the Springer correspondence in the classical (equal label) case. In particular, the described modules turn out to have a natural grading for the action of W_0, and are completely determined by their central character together with the W_0-representation in the top degree. This latter is an irreducible W_0-character which we call Springer correspondent.

Let $Ω$ be a vector space over a finite field with q elements. Let G denote the general linear group of endomorphisms of $Ω$ and let us consider the left regular representation $ρ: G \to B(L_2(X))$ associated to the natural action of G on the set X of linear subspaces of $Ω$. In this paper we study a natural basis B of the algebra $End_{G}(L_2(X))$ of intertwining maps on $L_2(X)$. By using a Laplacian operator on Grassmann graphs, we identify the kernels in B as solutions of a basic hypergeometric difference equation. This provides two expressions for these kernels. One in terms of the q-Hahn polynomials and the other by means of a Rodrigues type formula. Finally, we obtain a useful product formula for the mappings in B. We give two different proofs. One uses the theory of classical hypergeometric polynomials and the other is supported by a characterization of spherical functions in finite symmetric spaces. Both proofs require the use of certain associated Radon transforms.

We prove that a conjecture of Fomin, Fulton, Li, and Poon, associated to ordered pairs of partitions, holds for many infinite families of such pairs. We also show that the bounded height case can be reduced to checking that the conjecture holds for a finite number of pairs, for any given height. Moreover, we propose a natural generalization of the conjecture to the case of skew shapes.
A graphic generalization of arithmetic
In this paper, we extend the classical arithmetic defined over the set of natural numbers N, to the set of all finite directed connected multigraphs having a pair of distinct distinguished vertices. Specifically, we introduce a model F on the set of such graphs, and provide an interpretation of the language of arithmetic L={0,1,<=,+,x} inside F. The resulting model exhibits the property that the standard model on N embeds in F as a submodel, with the directed path of length n playing the role of the standard integer n. We will compare the theory of the larger structure F with classical arithmetic statements that hold in N. For example, we explore the extent to which F enjoys properties like the associativity and commutativity of + and x, distributivity, cancellation and order laws, and decomposition into irreducibles.

Every convex body K in R^n has a coordinate projection PK that contains at least vol(0.1 K) cells of the integer lattice PZ^n, provided this volume is at least one. Our proof of this counterpart of Minkowski's theorem is based on an extension of the combinatorial density theorem of Sauer, Shelah and Vapnik-Chervonenkis to Z^n. This leads to a new approach to sections of convex bodies. In particular, fundamental results of the asymptotic convex geometry such as the Volume Ratio Theorem and Milman's duality of the diameters admit natural versions for coordinate sections.
A Homotopy Theory for Graphs
The recently introduced A-homotopy groups for graphs are investigated. The main concern of the present article is the construction of an infinite cell complex, the homotopy groups of which are isomorphic to the A-homotopy groups of the given graph. We present a natural candidate for such a cell complex, together with a homomorphism between the corresponding groups that indeed yields an isomorphism, if a cubical analog of the simplicial approximation theorem holds, which - so far - we were unable to prove.
An algebra of power series arising in the intersection theory of moduli spaces of curves and in the enumeration of ramified coverings of the sphere
A bracket is a function that assigns a number to each monomial in variables τ_0, τ_1, ... We show that any bracket satisfying the string and the dilaton relations gives rise to a power series lying in the algebra A generated by the series \sum n^{n-1} q^n/n! and \sum n^n q^n /n! .
As a consequence, various series from A appear in the intersection theory of moduli spaces of curves.
A connection between the counting of ramified coverings of the sphere and the intersection theory on moduli spaces allows us to prove that some natural generating functions enumerating the ramified coverings lie, yet again, in A. As an application, one can find the asymptotic of the number of such coverings as the number of sheets tends to infinity.
We believe that the leading terms of the asymptotics like that correspond to observables in 2-dimensional gravity.
Topology of partition of measures by fans and the second obstruction
\noindent The simultaneous partition problems are classical problems of the combinatorial geometry which have the natural flavor of the equivariant topology. The $k$-fan partition problems have attracted a lot of attention \cite{Aki2000}, \cite{BaMa2001}, \cite{BaMa2002} and forced some hard concrete combinatorial calculations in the equivariant cohomology \cite% {Bl-Vr-Ziv}. These problems can be reduced, by a beautiful scheme of \cite% {BaMa2001}, to a \textquotedblright typical\textquotedblright question of the existence of a $\mathbb{D}_{2n}$ equivariant map $f:V_{2}(\mathbb{R}% ^{3})\to W_{n}-\cup \mathcal{A}(α)$, where $V_{2}(\mathbb{R}% ^{3})$ is the space of all orthonormal 2-frames in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$ and $% W_{n}-\cup \mathcal{A}(α)$ is the complement of the appropriate arrangement. We introduce the \textit{target extension scheme} which allow us to use the equivariant obstruction theory as a tool for proving that: for every two proper measures on the sphere $S^{2}$, and any $α=(a,a+b,b)\in \mathbb{R}_{>0}^{3}$, there exists an $α$-partition of theses measures by a 3-fan.
\noindent The significance of these results, among other, is that, beside negative results \cite{Bl-Vr-Ziv}, the equivariant obstruction theory can pull off some positive results, which were not attained by other means.
Tableaux on k+1-cores, reduced words for affine permutations, and k-Schur expansions

The $k$-Young lattice $Y^k$ is a partial order on partitions with no part larger than $k$. This weak subposet of the Young lattice originated from the study of the $k$-Schur functions(atoms) $s_λ^{(k)}$, symmetric functions that form a natural basis of the space spanned by homogeneous functions indexed by $k$-bounded partitions. The chains in the $k$-Young lattice are induced by a Pieri-type rule experimentally satisfied by the $k$-Schur functions. Here, using a natural bijection between $k$-bounded partitions and $k+1$-cores, we establish an algorithm for identifying chains in the $k$-Young lattice with certain tableaux on $k+1$ cores. This algorithm reveals that the $k$-Young lattice is isomorphic to the weak order on the quotient of the affine symmetric group $\tilde S_{k+1}$ by a maximal parabolic subgroup. From this, the conjectured $k$-Pieri rule implies that the $k$-Kostka matrix connecting the homogeneous basis $\{h_\la\}_{\la\in\CY^k}$ to $\{s_\la^{(k)}\}_{\la\in\CY^k}$ may now be obtained by counting appropriate classes of tableaux on $k+1$-cores. This suggests that the conjecturally positive $k$-Schur expansion coefficients for Macdonald polynomials (reducing to $q,t$-Kostka polynomials for large $k$) could be described by a $q,t$-statistic on these tableaux, or equivalently on reduced words for affine permutations.

Pattern avoidance classes of permutations that cannot be expressed as unions of proper subclasses can be described as the set of subpermutations of a single bijection. In the case that this bijection is a permutation of the natural numbers a structure theorem is given. The structure theorem shows that the class is almost closed under direct sums or has a rational generating function.
Monotone Maps, Sphericity and Bounded Second Eigenvalue

We consider {\em monotone} embeddings of a finite metric space into low dimensional normed space. That is, embeddings that respect the order among the distances in the original space. Our main interest is in embeddings into Euclidean spaces. We observe that any metric on $n$ points can be embedded into $l_2^n$, while, (in a sense to be made precise later), for almost every $n$-point metric space, every monotone map must be into a space of dimension $Ω(n)$.
It becomes natural, then, to seek explicit constructions of metric spaces that cannot be monotonically embedded into spaces of sublinear dimension. To this end, we employ known results on {\em sphericity} of graphs, which suggest one example of such a metric space - that defined by a complete bipartitegraph. We prove that an $δn$-regular graph of order $n$, with bounded diameter has sphericity $Ω(n/(λ_2+1))$, where $λ_2$ is the second largest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of the graph, and $0 < δ\leq \half$ is constant. We also show that while random graphs have linear sphericity, there are {\em quasi-random} graphs of logarithmic sphericity.
For the above bound to be linear, $λ_2$ must be constant. We show that if the second eigenvalue of an $n/2$-regular graph is bounded by a constant, then the graph is close to being complete bipartite. Namely, its adjacency matrix differs from that of a complete bipartite graph in only $o(n^2)$ entries. Furthermore, for any $0 < δ< \half$, and $λ_2$, there are only finitely many $δn$-regular graphs with second eigenvalue at most $λ_2$.

The_Robin_Hood_ game is played as follows: On day i, the Sheriff puts s(i) bags of gold in the cave. On night i, Robin removes r(i) bags from the cave. The game is played for each natural nymber i. Robin wins if each bag which was put in the cave is eventually removed from it; otherwise the Sheriff wins.
Gasarch, Golub, and Srinivasan studied the Robin Hood game in the case of random strategies where Robin has no historical memory. We extend their main result to the case of bounded historical memory, and obtain a hierarchy of provably distinct games.
Geometrically constructed bases for homology of partition lattices of types A, B and D
We use the theory of hyperplane arrangements to construct natural bases for the homology of partition lattices of types A, B and D. This extends and explains the "splitting basis" for the homology of the partition lattice given in [Wa96], thus answering a question asked by R. Stanley. More explicitly, the following general technique is presented and utilized. Let A be a central and essential hyperplane arrangement in R^d. Let R_1,...,R_k be the bounded regions of a generic hyperplane section of A. We show that there are induced polytopal cycles ρ_{R_i} in the homology of the proper part \bar{L_A} of the intersection lattice such that {ρ_{R_i}}_{i=1,...,k} is a basis for \tilde H_{d-2}(\bar{L_A}). This geometric method for constructing combinatorial homology bases is applied to the Coxeter arrangements of types A, B and D, and to some interpolating arrangements.

In this paper, we generalize 2-trees by replacing triangles by quadrilaterals, pentagons or $k$-sided polygons ($k$-gons), where $k\geq 3$ is fixed. This generalization, to $k$-gonal 2-trees, is natural and is closely related, in the planar case, to some specializations of the cell-growth problem. Our goal is the labelled and unlabelled enumeration of $k$-gonal 2-trees according to the number $n$ of $k$-gons. We give explicit formulas in the labelled case, and, in the unlabelled case, recursive and asymptotic formulas.
The tropical totally positive Grassmannian

Tropical algebraic geometry is the geometry of the tropical semiring (R, min, +). The theory of total positivity is a natural generalization of the study of matrices with all minors positive. In this paper we introduce the totally positive part of the tropicalization of an arbitrary affine variety, an object which has the structure of a polyhedral fan. We then investigate the case of the Grassmannian, denoting the resulting fan \Trop^+ Gr_{k,n}. We show that \Trop^+ Gr_{2,n} is the Stanley-Pitman fan, which is combinatorially the fan dual to the (type A_{n-3}) associahedron, and that \Trop^+ Gr_{3,6} and \Trop^+ Gr_{3,7} are closely related to the fans dual to the types D_4 and E_6 associahedra. These results are reminiscent of the results of Fomin and Zelevinsky, and Scott, who showed that the Grassmannian has a natural cluster algebra structure which is of types A_{n-3}, D_4, and E_6 for Gr_{2,n}, Gr_{3,6}, and Gr_{3,7}. We suggest a general conjecture about the positive part of the tropicalization of a cluster algebra.

Let $Ω$ denote a non-empty finite set. Let $S(Ω)$ stand for the symmetric group on $Ω$ and let us write $P(Ω)$ for the power set of $Ω$. Let $ρ: S(Ω) \to U(L^2(P(Ω)))$ be the left unitary representation of $S(Ω)$ associated with its natural action on $P(Ω)$. We consider the algebra consisting of those endomorphisms of $L^2(P(Ω))$ which commute with the action of $ρ$. We find an attractive basis $B$ for this algebra. We obtain an expression, as a linear combination of $B$, for the product of any two elements of $B$. We obtain an expression, as a linear combination of $B$, for the adjoint of each element of $B$. It turns out the Fourier transform on $P(Ω)$ is an element of our algebra; we give the matrix which represents this transform with respect to $B$.

This is a foundational paper in tropical linear algebra, which is linear algebra over the min-plus semiring. We introduce and compare three natural definitions of the rank of a matrix, called the Barvinok rank, the Kapranov rank and the tropical rank. We demonstrate how these notions arise naturally in polyhedral and algebraic geometry, and we show that they differ in general. Realizability of matroids plays a crucial role here. Connections to optimization are also discussed.
A Hopf algebra of parking functions
If the moments of a probability measure on $\R$ are interpreted as a specialization of complete homogeneous symmetric functions, its free cumulants are, up to sign, the corresponding specializations of a sequence of Schur positive symmetric functions $(f_n)$. We prove that $(f_n)$ is the Frobenius characteristic of the natural permutation representation of $\SG_n$ on the set of prime parking functions. This observation leads us to the construction of a Hopf algebra of parking functions, which we study in some detail.
Flag vectors of multiplicial polytopes

Bisztriczky introduced the multiplex as a generalization of the simplex. A polytope is multiplicial if all its faces are multiplexes. In this paper it is proved that the flag vectors of multiplicial polytopes depend only on their face vectors. A special class of multiplicial polytopes, also discovered by Bisztriczky, is comprised of the ordinary polytopes. These are a natural generalization of the cyclic polytopes. The flag vectors of ordinary polytopes are determined. This is used to give a surprisingly simple formula for the h-vector of the ordinary d-polytope with n+1 vertices and characteristic k: h_i=binom{k-d+i}{i}+(n-k)binom{k-d+i-1}{i-1}, for i at most d/2. In addition, a construction is given for 4-dimensional multiplicial polytopes having two-thirds of their vertices on a single facet, answering a question of Bisztriczky.

We define and prove uniqueness of a natural homomorphism (called the Orchard morphism) from some groups associated naturally to a finite set $E$ to the group ${\mathcal E}(E)$ of two-partitions of $E$ representing equivalence relations having at most two classes on $E$.
As an application, given a finite generic configuration ${\mathcal C}\subset {\mathbf R}^d$, we exhibit a natural partition of ${\mathcal C}$ in two sets.
