The number of string C-groups of high rank
Published • View Publication • BIB
If $G$ is a transitive group of degree $n$ having a string C-group of rank $r\geq (n+3)/2$, then $G$ is necessarily the symmetric group $S_n$. We prove that if $n$ is large enough, up to isomorphism and duality, the number of string C-groups of rank $r$ for $S_n$ (with $r\geq (n+3)/2$) is the same as the number of string C-groups of rank $r+1$ for $S_{n+1}$. This result and the tools used in its proof, in particular the rank and degree extension, imply that if one knows the string C-groups of rank $(n+3)/2$ for $S_n$ with $n$ odd, one can construct from them all string C-groups of rank $(n+3)/2+k$ for $S_{n+k}$ for any positive integer $k$. The classification of the string C-groups of rank $r\geq (n+3)/2$ for $S_n$ is thus reduced to classifying string C-groups of rank $r$ for $S_{2r-3}$. A consequence of this result is the complete classification of all string C-groups of $S_n$ with rank $n-κ$ for $κ\in\{1,\ldots,6\}$, when $n\geq 2κ+3$, which extends previously known results. The number of string C-groups of rank $n-κ$, with $n\geq 2κ+3$, of this classification gives the following sequence of integers indexed by $κ$ and starting at $κ= 1$: $$(1,1,7,9,35,48)$$ This sequence of integers is new according to the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences. It will be available as sequence number A359367.

Degree lowering for ergodic averages along arithmetic progressions
Published • View Publication • BIB
We examine the limiting behavior of multiple ergodic averages associated with arithmetic progressions whose differences are elements of a fixed integer sequence. For each $\ell$, we give necessary and sufficient conditions under which averages of length $\ell$ of the aforementioned form have the same limit as averages of $\ell$-term arithmetic progressions. As a corollary, we derive a sufficient condition for the presence of arithmetic progressions with length $\ell+1$ and restricted differences in dense subsets of integers. These results are a consequence of the following general theorem: in order to verify that a multiple ergodic average is controlled by the degree $d$ Gowers-Host-Kra seminorm, it suffices to show that it is controlled by some Gowers-Host-Kra seminorm, and that the degree $d$ control follows whenever we have degree $d+1$ control. The proof relies on an elementary inverse theorem for the Gowers-Host-Kra seminorms involving dual functions, combined with novel estimates on averages of seminorms of dual functions. We use these estimates to obtain a higher order variant of the degree lowering argument previously used to cover averages that converge to the product of integrals.

Inversion sequences avoiding the pattern 010
Inversion sequences are integer sequences $(σ_1, \dots, σ_n)$ such that $0 \leqslant σ_i < i$ for all $1 \leqslant i \leqslant n$. The study of pattern-avoiding inversion sequences began in two independent articles by Mansour-Shattuck and Corteel-Martinez-Savage-Weselcouch in 2015 and 2016. These two initial articles solved the enumeration of inversion sequences avoiding a single pattern for every pattern of length 3 except the patterns 010 and 100. The case 100 was recently solved by Mansour and Yildirim. We solve the final case by making use of a decomposition of inversion sequences avoiding the pattern 010. Our decomposition needs to take into account the maximal value, and the number of distinct values occurring in the inversion sequence. We then expand our method to solve the enumeration of inversion sequences avoiding the pairs of patterns $\{010, 000\}, \{010, 110\}, \{010, 120\}$, and the Wilf-equivalent pairs $\{010, 201\} \sim \{010, 210\}$. For each family of pattern-avoiding inversion sequences considered, its enumeration requires the enumeration of some family of constrained words avoiding the same patterns, a question which we also solve.

Conjectures on Somos $4$, $6$ and $8$ sequences using Riordan arrays and the Catalan numbers
We give conjectures on the form of families of integer sequences whose Hankel transforms are, respectively, $(α, β)$ Somos $4$ sequences, $(α, 0, γ)$ Somos $6$ sequences, and $(α, β, γ, δ)$ Somos $8$ sequences, for particular values of $α$, $β$, $γ$, $δ$ which we describe. The sequences involved can be described in terms of the application of certain stretched Riordan arrays to the Catalan numbers, accompanied by a (sequence) Hankel transform. The combination of Riordan array and the Catalan numbers results from the study of certain generalized Jacobi continued fractions, based on the Counting Automata Methodology.

Some criteria for integer sequences pair being realizable by a graph
Let $A=(a_1,\ldots,a_n)$ and $B=(b_1,\ldots,b_n)$ be two sequences of nonnegative integers with $a_i \le b_i$ for $1\le i\le n$. The pair $(A;B)$ is said to be realizable by a graph if there exists a simple graph $G$ with vertices $v_1,\ldots, v_n$ such that $a_i\le d_G(v_i)\le b_i$ for $1\le i\le n$. Let $\preceq$ denote the lexicographic ordering on $Z\times Z:$ $(a_{i+1},b_{i+1})\preceq (a_i,b_i)\Longleftrightarrow [(a_{i+1}<a_i)\vee ((a_{i+1}=a_i)\&(b_{i+1}\le b_i))]$. We say that the sequences $A$ and $B$ are in good order if $(a_{i+1},b_{i+1})\preceq (a_i,b_i)$. In this paper, we consider the generalizations of six classical characterizations on sequences pair due to Berge, Ryser et al. and present related results.

Barrett-Johnson inequalities for totally nonnegative matrices
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a matrix $A$, let $A_{I,J}$ denote the submatrix of $A$ determined by rows $I$ and columns $J$. Fischer's Inequalities state that for each $n \times n$ Hermitian positive semidefinite matrix $A$, and each subset $I$ of $\{1,\dotsc,n\}$ and its complement $I^c$, we have $\det(A) \leq \det(A_{I,I})\det(A_{I^c,I^c})$. Barrett and Johnson (Linear Multilinear Algebra 34, 1993) extended these to state inequalities for sums of products of principal minors whose orders are given by nonincreasing integer sequences $(λ_1,\dotsc,λ_r)$, $(μ_1,\dotsc,μ_s)$ summing to $n$. Specifically, if $λ_1+\cdots+λ_i\leq μ_1+\cdots+μ_i$ for all $i$, then $$ λ_1!\cdotsλ_r! \sum_{(I_1,\dotsc,I_r)} \det(A_{I_1,I_1}) \cdots \det(A_{I_r,I_r}) ~\geq~ μ_1!\cdotsμ_s! \sum_{(J_1,\dotsc,J_s)} \det(A_{J_1,J_1}) \cdots \det(A_{J_s,J_s}), $$ where sums are over sequences of disjoint subsets of $\{1,\dotsc,n\}$ satisfying $|I_k| = λ_k$, $|J_k| = μ_k$. We show that these inequalities hold for totally nonnegative matrices as well.
On the Limiting Vacillating Tableaux for Integer Sequences
Published in Journal of Combinatorics, Vol. 15, Issue 3 (2024), pp. 383-400 • View Publication • BIB
A fundamental identity in the representation theory of the partition algeba is $n^k = \sum_λ f^λm_k^λ$ for $n \geq 2k$, where $λ$ ranges over integer partitions of $n$, $f^λ$ is the number of standard Young tableaux of shape $λ$, and $m_k^λ$ is the number of vacillating tableaux of shape $λ$ and length $2k$. Using a combination of RSK insertion and jeu de taquin, Halverson and Lewandowski constructed a bijection $DI_n^k$ that maps each integer sequence in $[n]^k$ to a pair consisting of a standard Young tableau and a vacillating tableau. In this paper, we show that for a given integer sequence $\boldsymbol{i}$, when $n$ is sufficiently large, the vacillating tableaux determined by $DI_n^k(\boldsymbol{i})$ become stable when $n \rightarrow \infty$; the limit is called the limiting vacillating tableau for $\boldsymbol{i}$. We give a characterization of the set of limiting vacillating tableaux and presents explicit formulas that enumerate those vacillating tableaux.

Integer Sequences and Output Arrays
The first author recently introduced an integer sequence now numbered A355519 in OEIS. This sequence arose from counting bracket tournaments; its study evokes the analysis of the Catalan triangle (sequence A009766 in OEIS) and the related Catalan numbers, sequence A000108 in OEIS. We therefore introduce a general construction that places these sequences on the same footing and suggests many new integer sequences. We provide code for performing this construction and a lengthy list of examples. This construction determines a function from input sequences to output sequences. Some of the resulting output sequences are in OEIS and others are not.

Partially Palindromic Compositions
We generalize recent work of Andrews, Just, and Simay on modular palindromic compositions and anti-palindromic compositions by viewing all compositions partially (modular) palindromic or anti-palindromic. More precisely, we enumerate compositions by the extent to which they are (modular) palindromic or anti-palindromic. We obtain various closed formulas from generating functions and provide bijective proofs for many of them. We recover some known results of Andrews, Just, and Simay and discover new connections with numerous sequences in The On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (OEIS).

A combinatorial interpretation of the noncommutative inverse Kostka matrix
Published • View Publication • BIB
We provide a combinatorial formula for the expansion of immaculate noncommutative symmetric functions into complete homogeneous noncommutative symmetric functions. To do this, we introduce generalizations of Ferrers diagrams which we call GBPR diagrams. We define tunnel hooks, which play a role similar to that of the special rim hooks appearing in the Eğecioğlu-Remmel formula for the symmetric inverse Kostka matrix. We extend this interpretation to skew shapes and fully generalize to define immaculate functions indexed by integer sequences skewed by integer sequences. Finally, as an application of our combinatorial formula, we extend Campbell's results on ribbon decompositions of immaculate functions to a larger class of shapes.
Motzkin numbers and flag codes
Motzkin numbers have been widely studied since they count many different combinatorial objects. In this paper we present a new appearance of this remarkable sequence in the network coding setting through a particular case of multishot codes called flag codes. A flag code is a set of sequences of nested subspaces (flags) of a vector space over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. If the list of dimensions is $(1, \dots, n-1)$, we speak about a full flag code. The flag distance is defined as the sum of the respective subspace distances and can be represented by means of the so-called distance vectors. We show that the number of distance vectors corresponding to the full flag variety on $\mathbb{F}_q^n$ is exactly the $n$-th Motzkin number. Moreover, we can identify the integer sequence that counts the number of possible distance vectors associated to a full flag code with prescribed minimum distance.

Strings from linear recurrences and permutations: a Gray code
Published • View Publication • BIB
Each positive increasing integer sequence $\{a_n\}_{n\geq 0}$ can serve as a numeration system to represent each non-negative integer by means of suitable coefficient strings. We analyse the case of $k$-generalized Fibonacci sequences leading to the binary strings avoiding $1^k$. We prove a bijection between the set %$F_n^{(k)}$ of strings of length $n$ and the set of permutations of $S_{n+1}(321,312,23\ldots(k+1)1)$. Finally, basing on a known Gray code for those strings, we define a Gray code for $S_{n+1}(321,312,23\ldots(k+1)1)$, where two consecutive permutations differ by an adjacent transposition.

Solutions of certain meta-Fibonacci recurrences

In this note we investigate the solutions of certain meta-Fibonacci recurrences of the form $f(n)=f(n-f(n-1))+f(n-2)$ for various sets of initial conditions. In the case when $f(n)=1$ for $n\leq 1$, we prove that the resulting integer sequence is closely related to the function counting binary partitions of a certain type.

Connecting Slow Solutions to Nested Recurrences with Linear Recurrent Sequences
Published • View Publication • BIB
Labeled infinite trees provide combinatorial interpretations for many integer sequences generated by nested recurrence relations. Typically, such sequences are monotone increasing. Several of these sequences also have straightforward descriptions in terms of how often each value in the sequence occurs. In this paper, we generalize the most classical examples to a larger family of sequences parametrized by linear recurrence relations. Each of our sequences can be constructed in three different ways: via a nested recurrence relation, from labeled infinite trees, or by using Zeckendorf-like strings of digits to describe its frequency sequence. We conclude the paper by discussing the asymptotic behaviors of our sequences.

Combinatorial aspects of sandpile models on wheel and fan graphs
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, Volume 110, May 2023 • View Publication • BIB
We study combinatorial aspects of the sandpile model on wheel and fan graphs, seeking bijective characterisations of the model's recurrent configurations on these families. For wheel graphs, we exhibit a bijection between these recurrent configurations and the set of subgraphs of the cycle graph which maps the level of the configuration to the number of edges of the subgraph. This bijection relies on two key ingredients. The first consists in considering a stochastic variant of the standard Abelian sandpile model (ASM), rather than the ASM itself. The second ingredient is a mapping from a given recurrent state to a canonical minimal recurrent state, exploiting similar ideas to previous studies of the ASM on complete bipartite graphs and Ferrers graphs. We also show that on the wheel graph with $2n$ vertices, the number of recurrent states with level $n$ is given by the first differences of the central Delannoy numbers. Finally, using similar tools, we exhibit a bijection between the set of recurrent configurations of the ASM on fan graphs and the set of subgraphs of the path graph containing the right-most vertex of the path. We show that these sets are also equinumerous with certain lattice paths, which we name Kimberling paths after the author of the corresponding entry in the Online Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences.

Facets of Symmetric Edge Polytopes for Graphs with Few Edges
Symmetric edge polytopes, also called adjacency polytopes, are lattice polytopes determined by simple undirected graphs. We introduce the integer array \(\mathrm{maxf}(n,m)\) giving the maximum number of facets of a symmetric edge polytope for a connected graph having \(n\) vertices and \(m\) edges, and the corresponding sequence \(\mathrm{minf}(n,m)\) of minimal values. We establish formulas for the number of facets obtained in several classes of sparse graphs and provide partial progress toward conjectures that identify facet-maximizing graphs in these classes. These formulas are combinatorial in nature and lead to independently interesting observations and conjectures regarding integer sequences defined by sums of products of binomial coefficients.
On digital sequences associated with Pascal's triangle
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider the sequence of integers whose $n$th term has base-$p$ expansion given by the $n$th row of Pascal's triangle modulo $p$ (where $p$ is a prime number). We first present and generalize well-known relations concerning this sequence. Then, with the great help of Sloane's On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences, we show that it appears naturally as a subsequence of a $2$-regular sequence. Its study provides interesting relations and surprisingly involves odious and evil numbers, Nim-sum and even Gray codes. Furthermore, we examine similar sequences emerging from prime numbers involving alternating sum-of-digits modulo~$p$. This note ends with a discussion about Pascal's pyramid involving trinomial coefficients.

Skew Dyck paths having no peaks at level 1
Skew Dyck paths are a variation of Dyck paths, where additionally to steps $(1,1)$ and $(1,-1)$ a south-west step $(-1,-1)$ is also allowed, provided that the path does not intersect itself. Replacing the south-west step by a red south-east step, we end up with decorated Dyck paths. Sequence A128723 of the Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences considers such paths where peaks at level 1 are forbidden. We provide a thorough analysis of a more general scenario, namely partial decorated Dyck paths, ending on a prescribed level $j$, both from left-to-right and from right-to-left (decorated Dyck paths are not symmetric). The approach is completely based on generating functions.
Cameron's operator in terms of determinants, and hypergeometric numbers
Published in Boletín de la Sociedad Matemática Mexicana, Third Series 28 (2022), issue 1, Article 9, 23 pp • View Publication • BIB
By studying Cameron's operator in terms of determinants, two kinds of "integer" sequences of incomplete numbers were introduced. One was the sequence of restricted numbers, including $s$-step Fibonacci sequences. Another was the sequence of associated numbers, including Lamé sequences of higher order. By the classical Trudi's formula and the inverse relation, more expressions were able to be obtained. These relations and identities can be extended to those of sequence of negative integers or rational numbers. As applications, we consider hypergeometric Bernoulli, Cauchy and Euler numbers with some modifications.
