Length-Four Pattern Avoidance in Inversion Sequences
Published in Electron. J. Comb. Volume 29, Issue 4 (2022) P4.37 • View Publication • BIB
Inversion sequences of length $n$ are integer sequences $e_1,\ldots ,e_n$ with $0\le e_i<i$ for all $i$, which are in bijection with the permutations of length $n$. In this paper, we classify all Wilf equivalence classes of pattern-avoiding inversion sequences of length-4 patterns except for one case (whether 3012 $\equiv$ 3201) and enumerate some of the length-4 pattern-avoiding inversion sequences that are in the OEIS.

Some bijections for lattice paths
We present three bijections, the first between little Schröder paths and a class of growth-constrained integer sequences, the second between lattice paths consisting of steps with nonnegative slope and another class of growth-constrained sequences, the third between a class of lattice paths with steps $(1,1)$ and $(1,-j\,),\ j\ge 1$, and a class with steps $(k,1),\ k\ge 1$, and $(1,-1)$.

Generalized Lucas congruences and linear $p$-schemes
Published • View Publication • BIB
We observe that a sequence satisfies Lucas congruences modulo $p$ if and only if its values modulo $p$ can be described by a linear $p$-scheme, as introduced by Rowland and Zeilberger, with a single state. This simple observation suggests natural generalizations of the notion of Lucas congruences. To illustrate this point, we prove explicit generalized Lucas congruences for integer sequences that can be represented as the constant terms of $P(x,y)^n Q(x,y)$ where $P$ and $Q$ are certain Laurent polynomials.

Shadow sequences of integers, from Fibonacci to Markov and back
Published • View Publication • BIB
The following general idea looks crazy. What if another integer sequence follows each integer sequence like a shadow? I will demonstrate that this is indeed the case, perhaps not for every integer sequence, but for many of them.
On some combinatorial sequences associated to invariant theory
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics (2022) • View Publication • BIB
We study the enumerative and analytic properties of some sequences constructed using tensor invariant theory. The octant sequences are constructed from the exceptional Lie group $G_2$ and the quadrant sequences from the special linear group $SL(3)$. In each case we show that the corresponding sequences are related by binomial transforms. The first three octant sequences and the first four quadrant sequences are listed in the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (OEIS). These sequences all have interpretations as enumerating two-dimensional lattice walks but for the octant sequences the boundary conditions are unconventional. These sequences are all P-recursive and we give the corresponding recurrence relations. In all cases the associated differential operators are of third order and have the remarkable property that they can be solved to give closed formulae for the ordinary generating functions in terms of classical Gaussian hypergeometric functions. Moreover, we show that the octant sequences and the quadrant sequences are related by the branching rules for the inclusion of $SL(3)$ in $G_2$.

Solution to a Forcible Version of a Graphic Sequence Problem
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $A_n=(a_1,a_2,\ldots,a_n)$ and $B_n=(b_1,b_2,\ldots,b_n)$ be nonnegative integer sequences with $A_n\le B_n$. The purpose of this note is to give a good characterization such that every integer sequence $π=(d_1,d_2,\ldots d_n)$ with even sum and $A_n\le π\le B_n$ is graphic. This solves a forcible version of problem posed by Niessen and generalizes the Erdős--Gallai theorem.
Combinatorics of NC-Probability Spaces with Independent Constants
Published • View Publication • BIB
Unlike classical and free independence, the boolean and monotone notions of independence lack of the property of independent constants. In the scalar case, this leads to restrictions for the central limit theorems, as observed by F. Oravecz. We characterize the property of independent constants from a combinatorial point of view, based on cumulants and set partitions. This characterization also holds for the operator-valued extension. Our considerations lead rather directly to very mild variations of boolean and monotone cumulants, where constants are now independent. These alternative probability theories are closely related to the usual notions. Hence, an important part of the boolean/monotone probability theories can be imported directly. We describe some standard combinatorial aspects of these variations (and their cyclic versions), such as their Mobius functions, which feature well-known combinatorial integer sequences. The new notions with independent constants seem also more strongly related to the operator-valued extension of c-free probability.

The degree of asymmetry of sequences
Published • View Publication • BIB
We explore the notion of degree of asymmetry for integer sequences and related combinatorial objects. The degree of asymmetry is a new combinatorial statistic that measures how far an object is from being symmetric. We define this notion for compositions, words, matchings, binary trees and permutations, we find generating functions enumerating these objects with respect to their degree of asymmetry, and we describe the limiting distribution of this statistic in each case.

The Integer Sequence Transform $a \mapsto b$ where $b_n$ is the Number of Real Roots of the Polynomial $a_0 + a_1x + a_2x^2 + \cdots + a_nx^n$
We discuss the integer sequence transform $a \mapsto b$ where $b_n$ is the number of real roots of the polynomial $a_0 + a_1x + a_2x^2 + \cdots + a_nx^n$. It is shown that several sequences $a$ give the trivial sequence $b = (0,1,0,1, 0,1,\ldots)$, i.e., ${b_n = n \bmod 2}$, among them the Catalan numbers, central binomial coefficients, $n!$ and $\binom{n+k}{n}$ for a fixed $k$. We also look at some sequences $a$ for which $b$ is more interesting such as $a_n = (n+1)^k$ for $k \geq 3$. Further, general procedures are given for constructing real sequences $a_n$ for which $b_n$ is either always maximal or minimal.

Quiddities of polygon dissections and the Conway-Coxeter frieze equation
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study a $2 \times 2$ matrix equation arising naturally in the theory of Coxeter frieze patterns. It is formulated in terms of the generators of the group $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$ and is closely related to continued fractions. It appears in a number of different areas, for example, toric varieties. We count its positive solutions, obtaining a series of integer sequences, some known and some new. This extends classical work of Conway and Coxeter proving that the first of these sequences is the Catalan numbers.

Weighted unary-binary trees, Hex-trees, marked ordered trees, and related structures
Hex-trees are identified as a particular instance of weighted unary-binary trees. The Horton-Strahler numbers of these objects are revisited, and, thanks to a substitution that is not immediately intuitive, explicit results are possible. They are augmented by asymptotic evaluations as well. Furthermore, marked ordered trees (in bijection to skew Dyck paths) are investigated, followed 3-Motzkin paths and multi-edge trees. The underlying theme is sequence A002212 in the Encyclopedia of integer sequences.

Construction of simplicial complexes with prescribed degree-size sequences
Published in Phys. Rev. E 104, L042303 (2021) • View Publication • BIB
We study the realizability of simplicial complexes with a given pair of integer sequences, representing the node degree distribution and the facet size distribution, respectively. While the $s$-uniform variant of the problem is $\mathsf{NP}$-complete when $s \geq 3$, we identify two populations of input sequences, most of which can be solved in polynomial time using a recursive algorithm that we contribute. Combining with a sampler for the simplicial configuration model [J.-G. Young $\textit{et al.}$, Phys. Rev. E $\textbf{96}$, 032312 (2017)], we facilitate the efficient sampling of simplicial ensembles from arbitrary degree and size distributions. We find that, contrary to expectations based on dyadic networks, increasing the nodes' degrees reduces the number of loops in simplicial complexes. Our work unveils a fundamental constraint on the degree-size sequences and sheds light on further analysis of higher-order phenomena based on local structures.

Sequences involving square zig-zag shapes
Published in Journal of Integer Sequences, Vol. 24 (2021), Article 21.5.2 • Search Publication
We define a so-called square $k$-zig-zag shape as a part of the regular square grid. Considering the shape as a $k$-zig-zag digraph, we give values of its vertices according to the number of the shortest paths from a base vertex. It provides several integer sequences, whose higher-order homogeneous recurrences are determined by the help of a special matrix recurrence.

Reconstruction of hypergraphs from line graphs and degree sequences
In this paper we consider the problem to reconstruct a $k$-uniform hypergraph from its line graph. In general this problem is hard. We solve this problem when the number of hyperedges containing any pair of vertices is bounded. Given an integer sequence, constructing a $k$-uniform hypergraph with that as its degree sequence is NP-complete. Here we show that for constant integer sequences the question can be answered in polynomial time using Baranyai's theorem.

Shifted insertion algorithms for primed words
Published in Combinatorial Theory 3 (2023), no. 3., #14 • View Publication • BIB
This article studies some new insertion algorithms that associate pairs of shifted tableaux to finite integer sequences in which certain terms may be primed. When primes are ignored in the input word these algorithms reduce to known correspondences, namely, a shifted form of Edelman-Greene insertion, Sagan-Worley insertion, and Haiman's shifted mixed insertion. These maps have the property that when the input word varies such that one output tableau is fixed, the other output tableau ranges over all (semi)standard tableaux of a given shape with no primed diagonal entries. Our algorithms have the same feature, but now with primes allowed on the main diagonal. One application of this is to give another Littlewood-Richardson rule for products of Schur $Q$-functions. It is hoped that there will exist set-valued generalizations of our bijections that can be used to understand products of $K$-theoretic Schur $Q$-functions.

Peaks are preserved under run-sorting
Published in ECA 2:1 (2022) Article S2R2, http://ecajournal.haifa.ac.il/Volume2022/ECA2022_S2A2.pdf • View Publication • BIB
We study a sorting procedure (run-sorting) on permutations, where runs are rearranged in lexicographic order. We describe a rather surprising bijection on permutations on length $n$, with the property that it sends the set of peak-values to the set of peak-values after run-sorting. We also prove that the expected number of descents in a permutation $σ\in S_{n}$ after run-sorting is equal to $(n-2)/3$. Moreover, we provide a closed form of the exponential generating function introduced by Nabawanda, Rakotondrajao and Bamunoba in 2020, for the number of run-sorted permutations of $[n]$, ($RSP(n)$) having $k$ runs, which gives a new interpretation to the sequence A124324 in the Online Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences. We show that the descent generating polynomials, $A_{n}(t)$ for $RSP(n)$ are real rooted, and satisfy an interlacing property similar to that satisfied by the Eulerian polynomials. Finally, we study run-sorted binary words and compute the expected number of descents after run-sorting a binary word of length $n$.

On the Gap-sum and Gap-product Sequences of Integer Sequences
In this note, we explore two families of sequences associated to a suitable integer sequence: the gap-sum sequence and the gap-product sequence. These are the sums and the products of consecutive numbers not in the original sequence. We give closed forms for both, in terms of the original sequence, and in the case of Horadam sequences, we find the generating function of the gap-sum sequence. For some elementary sequences, we indicate that the gap-product sequences are given by the Fuss-Catalan-Raney numbers.

Using Graph Theory to Derive Inequalities for the Bell Numbers
Published in Journal of Integer Sequences, 24 (2021), 21.10.6 • Search Publication
The Bell numbers count the number of different ways to partition a set of $n$ elements while the graphical Bell numbers count the number of non-equivalent partitions of the vertex set of a graph into stable sets. This relation between graph theory and integer sequences has motivated us to study properties on the average number of colors in the non-equivalent colorings of a graph to discover new non trivial inequalities for the Bell numbers. Example are given to illustrate our approach.

Joint ergodicity of sequences
Published • View Publication • BIB
A collection of integer sequences is jointly ergodic if for every ergodic measure preserving system the multiple ergodic averages, with iterates given by this collection of sequences, converge in the mean to the product of the integrals. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for joint ergodicity that are flexible enough to recover most of the known examples of jointly ergodic sequences and also allow us to answer some related open problems. An interesting feature of our arguments is that they avoid deep tools from ergodic theory that were previously used to establish similar results. Our approach is primarily based on an ergodic variant of a technique pioneered by Peluse and Prendiville in order to give quantitative variants for the finitary version of the polynomial Szemerédi theorem.
