We solve the boson normal ordering problem for F[(a*)^r a^s], with r,s positive integers, where a* and a are boson creation and annihilation operators satisfying [a,a*]=1. That is, we provide exact and explicit expressions for the normal form wherein all a's are to the right. The solution involves integer sequences of numbers which are generalizations of the conventional Bell and Stirling numbers whose values they assume for r=s=1. A comprehensive theory of such generalized combinatorial numbers is given including closed-form expressions (extended Dobinski-type formulas)and generating functions. These last are special expectation values in boson coherent states.

We consider the transformation properties of integer sequences arising from the normal ordering of exponentiated boson ([a,a*]=1) monomials of the form exp(x (a*)^r a), r=1,2,..., under the composition of their exponential generating functions (egf). They turn out to be of Sheffer-type. We demonstrate that two key properties of these sequences remain preserved under substitutional composition: (a)the property of being the solution of the Stieltjes moment problem; and (b) the representation of these sequences through infinite series (Dobinski-type relations). We present a number of examples of such composition satisfying properties (a) and (b). We obtain new Dobinski-type formulas and solve the associated moment problem for several hierarchically defined combinatorial families of sequences.

This article gives a brief introduction to the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (or OEIS). The OEIS is a database of nearly 90,000 sequences of integers, arranged lexicographically. The entry for a sequence lists the initial terms (50 to 100, if available), a description, formulae, programs to generate the sequence, references, links to relevant web pages, and other information.
On a sequence related to the Josephus problem
In this short note, we show that an integer sequence defined on the minimum of differences between divisor complements of its partial products is connected with the Josephus problem (q=3).
Self-describing sequences and the Catalan family tree
We introduce a transformation of finite integer sequences, show that every sequence eventually stabilizes under this transformation and that the number of fixed points is counted by the Catalan numbers. The sequences that are fixed are precisely those that describe themselves -- every term $t$ is equal to the number of previous terms that are smaller than $t$. In addition, we provide an easy way to enumerate all these self-describing sequences by organizing them in a Catalan tree with a specific labelling system.

For any function F(x) having a Taylor expansion we solve the boson normal ordering problem for F[(a*)^r a^s], with r,s positive integers,[a,a*]=1, i.e. we provide exact and explicit expressions for its normal form which has all a's to the right. The solution involves integer sequences of numbers which, for r,s >=1, are generalizations of the conventional Bell and Stirling numbers whose values they assume for r=s=1. A complete theory of such generalized combinatorial numbers is given including closed-form expressions (extended Dobinski - type formulas), recursion relations and generating functions. These last are special expectation values in boson coherent states.

Extending earlier work of R. Donaghey and P. J. Cameron, we investigate some canonical "eigen-sequences" associated with transformations of integer sequences. Several known sequences appear in a new setting: for instance the sequences (such as 1, 3, 11, 49, 257, 1531, ...) studied by T. Tsuzuku, H. O. Foulkes and A. Kerber in connection with multiply transitive groups are eigen-sequences for the binomial transform. Many interesting new sequences also arise, such as 1, 1, 2, 26, 152, 1144, ..., which shifts one place left when transformed by the Stirling numbers of the second kind, and whose exponential generating function satisfies A'(x) = A(e^x -1) + 1.

A generalization of the Seidel-Entringer-Arnold method for calculating the alternating permutation numbers (or secant-tangent numbers) leads to a new operation on integer sequences, the Boustrophedon transform.

We consider the permutation group algebra defined by Cameron and show that if the permutation group has no finite orbits, then no homogeneous element of degree one is a zero-divisor of the algebra. We proceed to make a conjecture which would show that the algebra is an integral domain if, in addition, the group is oligomorphic. We go on to show that this conjecture is true in certain special cases, including those of the form H Wr S and H Wr A, and show that in the oligormorphic case, the algebras corresponding to these special groups are polynomial algebras. In the H Wr A case, the algebra is related to the shuffle algebra of free Lie algebra theory. We finish by considering some integer sequences which arise from certain of these groups.
Extended Bell and Stirling numbers from hypergeometric exponentiation
Exponentiating the hypergeometric series gives a recursion relation for integer sequences which are generalizations of conventional Bell numbers. The corresponding associated Stirling numbers of the second kind are also generated and investigated. For the lowest order generalisation, one can give a combinatorial interpretation of these 'Bell' numbers, and of some Stirling numbers associated with them. We also consider these analogues of Bell numbers in the case of restricted partitions.
