Noncommutative Bell polynomials and the dual immaculate basis
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics, Volume 1 (2018) no. 5, p. 653-676 • View Publication • BIB
We define a new family of noncommutative Bell polynomials in the algebra of free quasi-symmetric functions and relate it to the dual immaculate basis of quasi-symmetric functions. We obtain noncommutative versions of Grinberg's results [Canad. J. Math. 69 (2017), 21--53], and interpret them in terms of the tridendriform structure of WQSym. We then present a variant of Rey's self-dual Hopf algebra of set partitions [FPSAC'07, Tianjin] adapted to our noncommutative Bell polynomials and give a complete description of the Bell equivalence classes as linear extensions of explicit posets.
On Schur multiple zeta functions: A combinatoric generalization of multiple zeta functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce Schur multiple zeta functions which interpolate both the multiple zeta and multiple zeta-star functions of the Euler-Zagier type combinatorially. We first study their basic properties including a region of absolute convergence and the case where all variables are the same. Then, under an assumption on variables, some determinant formulas coming from theory of Schur functions such as the Jacobi-Trudi, Giambelli and dual Cauchy formula are established with the help of Macdonald's ninth variation of Schur functions. Moreover, we investigate the quasi-symmetric functions corresponding to the Schur multiple zeta functions. We obtain the similar results as above for them and, furthermore, describe the images of them by the antipode of the Hopf algebra of quasi-symmetric functions explicitly. Finally, we establish iterated integral representations of the Schur multiple zeta values of ribbon type, which yield a duality for them in some cases.

Critical groups for Hopf algebra modules
Published in Math. Proc. Camb. Phil. Soc. 168 (2020) 473-503 • View Publication • BIB
This paper considers an invariant of modules over a finite-dimensional Hopf algebra, called the critical group. This generalizes the critical groups of complex finite group representations studied by Benkart, Klivans, Reiner and Gaetz. A formula is given for the cardinality of the critical group generally, and the critical group for the regular representation is described completely. A key role in the formulas is played by the greatest common divisor of the dimensions of the indecomposable projective representations.

Counting faces of nestohedra
A new algebraic formula for the numbers of faces of nestohedra is obtained. The enumerator function $F(P_B)$ of positive lattice points in interiors of maximal cones of the normal fan of the nestohedron $P_B$ associated to a building set $B$ is described as a morphism from the certain combinatorial Hopf algebra of building sets to quasisymmetric functions. We define the $q$-analog $F_q(P_B)$ and derive its determining recurrence relations. The $f$-polynomial of the nestohedron $P_B$ appears as the principal specialization of the quasisymmetric function $F_q(P_B)$.

Renormalization: a quasi-shuffle approach
Published • View Publication • BIB
In recent years, the usual BPHZ algorithm for renormalization in perturbative quantum field theory has been interpreted, after dimensional regularization, as a Birkhoff decomposition of characters on the Hopf algebra of Feynman graphs, with values in a Rota-Baxter algebra of amplitudes. We associate in this paper to any such algebra a universal semi-group (different in nature from the Connes-Marcolli "cosmical Galois group"). Its action on the physical amplitudes associated to Feynman graphs produces the expected operations: Bogoliubov's preparation map, extraction of divergences, renormalization. In this process a key role is played by commutative and noncommutative quasi-shuffle bialgebras whose universal properties are instrumental in encoding the renormalization process.

Hopf algebra techniques to handle dynamical systems and numerical integrators
Published • View Publication • BIB
In a series of papers the present authors and their coworkers have developed a family of algebraic techniques to solve a number of problems in the theory of discrete or continuous dynamical systems and to analyze numerical integrators. Given a specific problem, those techniques construct an abstract, {\em universal} version of it which is solved algebraically; then, the results are tranferred to the original problem with the help of a suitable morphism. In earlier contributions, the abstract problem is formulated either in the dual of the shuffle Hopf algebra or in the dual of the Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra. In the present contribution we extend these techniques to more general Hopf algebras, which in some cases lead to more efficient computations.

Weak composition quasi-symmetric functions, Rota-Baxter algebras and Hopf algebras
Published in Adv Math. 344 (2019), 1-34 • View Publication • BIB
We introduce the Hopf algebra of quasi-symmetric functions with semigroup exponents generalizing the Hopf algebra QSym of quasi-symmetric functions. As a special case we obtain the Hopf algebra WCQSym of weak composition quasi-symmetric functions, which provides a framework for the study of a question proposed by G.-C.~Rota relating symmetric type functions and Rota-Baxter algebras. We provide the transformation formulas between the weak composition monomial and fundamental quasi-symmetric functions, which extends the corresponding results for quasi-symmetric functions. Moreover, we show that QSym is a Hopf subalgebra and a Hopf quotient algebra of WCQSym. Rota's question is addressed by identifying WCQsym with the free commutative unitary Rota-Baxter algebra of weight 1 on one generator, which also allows us to equip this algebra with a Hopf algebra structure.

Monotone, free, and boolean cumulants: a shuffle algebra approach
Published in Advances in Mathematics 328 (2018) 112-132 • View Publication • BIB
The theory of cumulants is revisited in the "Rota way", that is, by following a combinatorial Hopf algebra approach. Monotone, free, and boolean cumulants are considered as infinitesimal characters over a particular combinatorial Hopf algebra. The latter is neither commutative nor cocommutative, and has an underlying unshuffle bialgebra structure which gives rise to a shuffle product on its graded dual. The moment-cumulant relations are encoded in terms of shuffle and half-shuffle exponentials. It is then shown how to express concisely monotone, free, and boolean cumulants in terms of each other using the pre-Lie Magnus expansion together with shuffle and half-shuffle logarithms.

Lie-Butcher series, Geometry, Algebra and Computation
Published • View Publication • BIB
Lie-Butcher (LB) series are formal power series expressed in terms of trees and forests. On the geometric side LB-series generalizes classical B-series from Euclidean spaces to Lie groups and homogeneous manifolds. On the algebraic side, B-series are based on pre-Lie algebras and the Butcher-Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra. The LB-series are instead based on post-Lie algebras and their enveloping algebras. Over the last decade the algebraic theory of LB-series has matured. The purpose of this paper is twofold. First, we aim at presenting the algebraic structures underlying LB series in a concise and self contained manner. Secondly, we review a number of algebraic operations on LB-series found in the literature, and reformulate these as recursive formulae. This is part of an ongoing effort to create an extensive software library for computations in LB-series and B-series in the programming language Haskell.

Decomposition spaces in Combinatorics
A decomposition space (also called 2-Segal space) is a simplicial object satisfying an exactness condition weaker than the Segal condition: just as the Segal condition expresses composition, the new condition expresses decomposition. It is a general framework for incidence (co)algebras. In this contribution, after establishing a formula for the section coefficients, we survey a large supply of examples, emphasising the notion's firm roots in classical combinatorics. The first batch of examples, similar to binomial posets, serves to illustrate 2 key points: (1) the incidence algebra in question is realised directly from a decomposition space, without a reduction step, and reductions are often given by CULF functors; (2) at the objective level, the convolution algebra is a monoidal structure of species. We encounter the usual Cauchy product of species, the shuffle product of L-species, the Dirichlet product of arithmetic species, the Joyal-Street external product of q-species and the Morrison `Cauchy' product of q-species. In each case a power series representation results from taking cardinality. The external product of q-species exemplifies the fact that Waldhausen's S-construction on an abelian category is a decomposition space, yielding Hall algebras. The next class of examples includes Schmitt's chromatic Hopf algebra, the Faà di Bruno bialgebra, the Butcher-Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra of trees and variations from operad theory. Similar structures on posets and directed graphs exemplify a general construction of decomposition spaces from directed restriction species. An appetiser on decomposition spaces of symmetric functions is included. We finish by computing the Möbius function in a few cases, and commenting on certain cancellations that occur in the process of taking cardinality, substantiating that these cancellations are not possible at the objective level.
The algebras of graph rewriting
The concept of diagrammatic combinatorial Hopf algebras in the form introduced for describing the Heisenberg-Weyl algebra in~\cite{blasiak2010combinatorial} is extended to the case of so-called rule diagrams that present graph rewriting rules and their composites. The resulting rule diagram algebra may then be suitably restricted in four different ways to what we call the rule algebras, which are non-commutative, unital associative algebras that implement the algebra of compositions of graph rewriting rules. Notably, our framework reveals that there exist two more types of graph rewriting systems than previously known in the literature, and we present an analysis of the structure of the rule algebras as well as a form of Poincaré-Birkhoff-Witt theorem for the rule diagram algebra. Our work lays the foundation for a fundamentally new way of analyzing graph transformation systems, and embeds this very important concept from theoretical computer science firmly into the realm of mathematical combinatorics and statistical physics.

Weak Hopf algebras and the distribution of involutions in symmetric groups
By computing Frobenius-Schur indicators of modules of certain weak Hopf algebras, we give a formula for the number of involutions in symmetric groups, which are contained in a given coset with respect to a given Young subgroup.

A cancellation-free antipode formula (for uniform matroids) for the restriction-contraction matroid Hopf algebra
In this paper, we give a cancellation-free antipode formula (for uniform matroids) for the restriction-contraction matroid Hopf algebra, using the technique of splitting and merging via a sign-reversing involution. The cancellation-free formula expresses the antipode of uniform matroids as a sum over certain ordered set partitions.

Harmonic sums and polylogarithms at non-positive multi-indices
Published • View Publication • BIB
Extending Eulerian polynomials and Faulhaber's formula 1, we study several combi-natorial aspects of harmonic sums and polylogarithms at non-positive multi-indices as well as their structure. Our techniques are based on the combinatorics of non-commutative generating series in the shuffle Hopf algebras giving a global process to renormalize the divergent polyzetas at non-positive multi-indices.

Cancelation free formula for the antipode of linearized Hopf monoid
Published • View Publication • BIB
Many combinatorial Hopf algebras $H$ in the literature are the functorial image of a linearized Hopf monoid $\bf H$. That is, $H={\mathcal K} ({\bf H})$ or $H=\overline{\mathcal K} ({\bf H})$. Unlike the functor $\overline{\mathcal K}$, the functor ${\mathcal K}$ applied to ${\bf H}$ may not preserve the antipode of ${\bf H}$. In this case, one needs to consider the larger Hopf monoid ${\bf L}\times{\bf H}$ to get $H={\mathcal K} ({\bf H})=\overline{\mathcal K}({\bf L}\times{\bf H})$ and study the antipode in ${\bf L}\times{\bf H}$. One of the main results in this paper provides a cancelation free and multiplicity free formula for the antipode of ${\bf L}\times{\bf H}$. From this formula we obtain a new antipode formula for $H$. We also explore the case when ${\bf H}$ is commutative and cocommutative. In this situation we get new antipode formulas that despite of not being cancelation free, can be used to obtain one for $\overline{\mathcal K}({\bf H})$ in some cases. We recover as well many of the well-known cancelation free formulas in the literature. One of our formulas for computing the antipode in ${\bf H}$ involves acyclic orientations of hypergraphs as the central tool. In this vein, we obtain polynomials analogous to the chromatic polynomial of a graph, and also identities parallel to Stanley's (-1)-color theorem. One of our examples introduces a {\it chromatic} polynomial for permutations which counts increasing sequences of the permutation satisfying a pattern. We also study the statistic obtained after evaluating such polynomial at $-1$. Finally, we sketch $q$ deformations and geometric interpretations of our results. This last part will appear in a sequel paper in joint work with J. Machacek.

Markov Chains from Descent Operators on Combinatorial Hopf Algebras
We develop a general theory for Markov chains whose transition probabilities are the coefficients of descent operators on combinatorial Hopf algebras. These model the breaking-then-recombining of combinational objects. Examples include the various card-shuffles of Diaconis, Fill and Pitman, Fulman's restriction-then-induction chains on the representations of the symmetric group, and a plethora of new chains on trees, partitions and permutations. The eigenvalues of these chains can be calculated in a uniform manner using Hopf algebra structure theory, and there is a simple expression for their stationary distributions. For an important subclass of chains analogous to the top-to-random shuffle, we derive a full right eigenbasis, from which follow exact expressions for expectations of certain statistics of interest. This greatly generalises the coproduct-then-product chains previously studied in joint work with Persi Diaconis and Arun Ram.
A comodule-bialgebra structure for word-series substitution and mould composition

An internal coproduct is described, which is compatible with Hoffman's quasi-shuffle product. Hoffman's quasi-shuffle Hopf algebra, with deconcatenation coproduct, is a comodule-Hopf algebra over the bialgebra thus defined. The relation with J. Ecalle's mould calculus, i.e. mould composition and contracting arborification, is precised.
Species substitution, graph suspension, and graded Hopf algebras of painted tree polytopes
Published in Algebr. Geom. Topol. 19 (2019) 1019-1078 • View Publication • BIB
Combinatorial Hopf algebras of trees exemplify the connections between operads and bialgebras. Painted trees were introduced recently as examples of how graded Hopf operads can bequeath Hopf structures upon compositions of coalgebras. We put these trees in context by exhibiting them as the minimal elements of face posets of certain convex polytopes. The full face posets themselves often possess the structure of graded Hopf algebras (with one-sided unit). We can enumerate faces using the fact that they are structure types of substitutions of combinatorial species. Species considered here include ordered and unordered binary trees and ordered lists (labeled corollas). Some of the polytopes that constitute our main results are well known in other contexts. First we see the classical permutohedra, and then certain generalized permutohedra: specifically the graph associahedra of suspensions of certain simple graphs. As an aside we show that the stellohedra also appear as liftings of generalized permutohedra: graph composihedra for complete graphs. Thus our results give examples of Hopf algebras of tubings and marked tubings of graphs. We also show an alternative associative algebra structure on the graph tubings of star graphs.

An Hopf algebra for counting simple cycles
Published in Journal of Discrete Mathematics 2017 • View Publication • BIB
Simple cycles, also known as self-avoiding polygons, are cycles on graphs which are not allowed to visit any vertex more than once. We present an exact formula for enumerating the simple cycles of any length on any directed graph involving a sum over its induced subgraphs. This result stems from an Hopf algebra, which we construct explicitly, and which provides further means of counting simple cycles. Finally, we obtain a more general theorem asserting that any Lie idempotent can be used to enumerate simple cycles.
