Transitive and Co-Transitive Caps

A cap in PG(r,q) is a set of points, no three of which are collinear. A cap is said to be transitive if its automorphism group in PGammaL(r+1,q) acts transtively on the cap, and co-transitive if the automorphism group acts transtively on the cap's complement in PG(r,q). Transitive, co-transitive caps are characterized as being one of: an elliptic quadric in PG(3,q); a Suzuki-Tits ovoid in PG(3,q); a hyperoval in PG(2,4); a cap of size 11 in PG(4,3); the complement of a hyperplane in PG(r,2); or a union of Singer orbits in PG(r,q) whose automorphism group comes from a subgroup of GammaL(1,q^{r+1}).

We prove a conjecture of Cohn and Propp, which refines a conjecture of Bosley and Fidkowski about the symmetry of the set of alternating sign matrices (ASMs). We examine data arising from the representation of an ASM as a collection of paths connecting 2n vertices and show it to be invariant under the dihedral group D_{2n} rearranging those vertices, which is much bigger than the group of symmetries of the square. We also generalize conjectures of Propp and Wilson relating some of this data for different values of n.

We study root systems equipped with a basis of dominant weights such that certain axioms hold. This formalism allows to define a linear basis P of the space of Weyl group invariant polynomials. This basis is actually a family depending on at least one parameter. Our main result is the construction of difference operators which are simultaneously diagonalized by P. From this, Pieri type rules are derived. This generalizes results for shifted Jack polynomials.
Even though the approach is purely combinatorial, the main motivation comes from multiplicity free actions of reductive groups on vector spaces. Then the algebra of invariant differential operators has a distinguished basis, the Capelli operators, which gives rise to a basis P as above. The paper ends with a comprehensive table detailing the combinatorial structure of multiplicity free actions.
Self-dual Codes over the Kleinian Four Group

We introduce self-dual codes over the Kleinian four group $K = \mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2$ for a natural quadratic form on $K^n$ and develop the theory. Topics studied are: weight enumerators, mass formulas, classification up to length 8, neighbourhood graphs, extremal codes, shadows, generalized t-designs, lexicographic codes, the Hexacode and its odd and shorter cousin, automorphism groups, marked codes. Kleinian codes form a new and natural fourth step in a series of analogies between binary codes, lattices and vertex operator algebras. This analogy will be emphasized and explained in detail.
Lie algebras associated to fiber-type arrangements

Given a hyperplane arrangement in a complex vector space of dimension n, there is a natural associated arrangement of codimension k subspaces in a complex vector space of dimension k*n. Topological invariants of the complement of this subspace arrangement are related to those of the complement of the original hyperplane arrangement. In particular, if the hyperplane arrangement is fiber-type, then, apart from grading, the Lie algebra obtained from the descending central series for the fundamental group of the complement of the hyperplane arrangement is isomorphic to the Lie algebra of primitive elements in the homology of the loop space for the complement of the associated subspace arrangement. Furthermore, this last Lie algebra is given by the homotopy groups modulo torsion of the loop space of the complement of the subspace arrangement. Looping further yields an associated Poisson algebra, and generalizations of the "universal infinitesimal Poisson braid relations."

We give a combinatorial formula for the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials $P_{x,w}$ in the symmetric group when $w$ is a 321-hexagon-avoiding permutation. Our formula, which depends on a combinatorial framework developed by Deodhar, can be expressed in terms of a simple statistic on all subexpressions of any fixed reduced expression for $w$. We also show that $w$ being 321-hexagon-avoiding is equivalent to several other conditions, such as the Bott-Samelson resolution of the Schubert variety $X_w$ being small. We conclude with a simple method for completely determining the singular locus of $X_w$ when $w$ is 321-hexagon-avoiding.

Generalized toric varieties for simple non-rational convex polytopes
We call complex quasifold of dimension k a space that is locally isomorphic to the quotient of an open subset of the space C^k by the holomorphic action of a discrete group; the analogue of a complex torus in this setting is called a complex quasitorus. We associate to each simple polytope, rational or not, a family of complex quasifolds having same dimension as the polytope, each containing a dense open orbit for the action of a suitable complex quasitorus. We show that each of these spaces M is diffeomorphic to one of the symplectic quasifolds defined in http://arXiv.org/abs/math:SG/9904179, and that the induced symplectic structure is compatible with the complex one, thus defining on M the structure of a Kaehler quasifold. These spaces may be viewed as a generalization of the toric varieties that are usually associated to those simple convex polytopes that are rational.

First we survey generating function methods for obtaining useful probability estimates about random matrices in the finite classical groups. Then we describe a probabilistic picture of conjugacy classes which is coherent and beautiful. Connections are made with symmetric function theory, Markov chains, potential theory, Rogers-Ramanujan type identities, quivers, and various measures on partitions.
Frobenius-Schur functions: summary of results
We introduce and study a family of inhomogeneous symmetric functions which we call the Frobenius-Schur functions. These functions are indexed by partitions and differ from the conventional Schur functions in lower terms only.
Our interest in these new functions comes from the fact that they provide an explicit expression for the dimension of a skew Young diagram in terms of the Frobenius coordinates. This is important for the asymptotic theory of the characters of the symmetric groups.
Our main result is a surprisingly simple determinantal expression of the Frobenius-Schur functions in terms of the conventional Schur functions. Other results include certain generating series, the Giambelli formula, vanishing properties and interpolation, a combinatorial formula (representation in terms of tableaux), and a Sergeev-Pragacz-type formula.
Actually, we deal with a wider class of inhomogeneous symmetric functions which we call multiparameter Schur functions. These functions depend on an arbitrary doubly infinite sequence of parameters and interpolate between the Frobenius--Schur functions and the conventional Schur functions.
This paper contains the statements of the results and the main formulas. Proofs will be given in an expanded version of the paper which will be posted in the arXiv.
Higher homotopy groups of complements of complex hyperplane arrangements

We generalize results of Hattori on the topology of complements of hyperplane arrangements, from the class of generic arrangements, to the much broader class of hypersolvable arrangements. We show that the higher homotopy groups of the complement vanish in a certain combinatorially determined range, and we give an explicit Zπ_1-module presentation of π_p, the first non-vanishing higher homotopy group. We also give a combinatorial formula for the π_1-coinvariants of π_p.
For affine line arrangements whose cones are hypersolvable, we provide a minimal resolution of π_2, and study some of the properties of this module. For graphic arrangements associated to graphs with no 3-cycles, we obtain information on π_2, directly from the graph. The π_1-coinvariants of π_2 may distinguish the homotopy 2-types of arrangement complements with the same π_1, and the same Betti numbers in low degrees.

A new extension of the major index, defined in terms of Coxeter elements, is introduced. For the classical Weyl groups of type $B$, it is equidistributed with length. For more general wreath products it appears in an explicit formula for the Hilbert series of the (diagonal action) invariant algebra.

In this paper, we prove that the dimension of the space spanned by the characters of the symmetric powers of the standard n-dimensional representation of the symmetric group S_n is asymptotic to n^2/2. This is proved by using generating functions to obtain formulas for upper and lower bounds, both asymptotic to n^2/2, for this dimension. In particular, for n>6, these characters do not span the full space of class functions on S_n.
On a Planarity Criterion Coming from Knot Theory
A graph G is called "minimalizable" if a diagram with minimal crossing number can be obtained from an arbitrary diagram of G by crossing changes. If, furthermore, the minimal diagram is unique up to crossing changes then G is called "strongly minimalizable". In this article, it is explained how minimalizability of a graph is related to its automorphism group and it is shown that a graph is strongly minimalizable if the automorphism group is trivial or isomorphic to a product of symmetric groups. Then, the treatment of crossing number problems in graph theory by knot theoretical means is discussed and, as an example, a planarity criterion for minimalizable graphs is given.
The Kronecker product of Schur functions indexed by two-row shapes or hook shapes

The Kronecker product of two Schur functions $s_μ$ and $s_ν$, denoted by $s_μ*s_ν$, is the Frobenius characteristic of the tensor product of the irreducible representations of the symmetric group corresponding to the partitions $μ$ and $ν$. The coefficient of $s_λ$ in this product is denoted by $γ^λ_{μν}$, and corresponds to the multiplicity of the irreducible character $χ^λ$ in $χ^μχ^ν.$
We use Sergeev's Formula for a Schur function of a difference of two alphabets and the comultiplication expansion for $s_λ[XY]$ to find closed formulas for the Kronecker coefficients $γ^λ_{μν}$ when $λ$ is an arbitrary shape and $μ$ and $ν$ are hook shapes or two-row shapes.
Remmel \cite{Re1, Re2} and Remmel and Whitehead \cite{Re-Wh} derived some closed formulas for the Kronecker product of Schur functions indexed by two-row shapes or hook shapes using a different approach. We believe that the approach of this paper is more natural. The formulas obtained are simpler and reflect the symmetry of the Kronecker product.
A Probabilistic Proof of the Rogers Ramanujan Identities

The asymptotic probability theory of conjugacy classes of the finite general linear and unitary groups leads to a probability measure on the set of all partitions of natural numbers. A simple method of understanding these measures in terms of Markov chains is given and compared with work on the uniform measure. Elementary probabilistic proofs of the Rogers-Ramanujan identities follow. As a corollary, the main case of Bailey's lemma is interpreted as finding eigenvectors of the transition matrix of the Markov chain. It is shown that the viewpoint of Markov chains extends to quivers.
The invariants of the Clifford groups

The automorphism group of the Barnes-Wall lattice L_m in dimension 2^m (m not 3) is a subgroup of index 2 in a certain ``Clifford group'' C_m (an extraspecial group of order 2^(1+2m) extended by an orthogonal group). This group and its complex analogue CC_m have arisen in recent years in connection with the construction of orthogonal spreads, Kerdock sets, packings in Grassmannian spaces, quantum codes, Siegel modular forms and spherical designs.
In this paper we give a simpler proof of Runge's 1996 result that the space of invariants for C_m of degree 2k is spanned by the complete weight enumerators of the codes obtained by tensoring binary self-dual codes of length 2k with the field GF(2^m); these are a basis if m >= k-1. We also give new constructions for L_m and C_m: let M be the Z[sqrt(2)]-lattice with Gram matrix [2, sqrt(2); sqrt(2), 2]. Then L_m is the rational part of the mth tensor power of M, and C_m is the automorphism group of this tensor power. Also, if C is a binary self-dual code not generated by vectors of weight 2, then C_m is precisely the automorphism group of the complete weight enumerator of the tensor product of C and GF(2^m). There are analogues of all these results for the complex group CC_m, with ``doubly-even self-dual code'' instead of ``self-dual code''.
On Alexander-Conway Polynomials for Virtual Knots and Links
A polynomial invariant of virtual links, arising from an invariant of links in thickened surfaces introduced by Jaeger, Kauffman, and Saleur, is defined and its properties are investigated. Examples are given that the invariant can detect chirality and even non-invertibility of virtual knots and links. Furthermore, it is shown that the polynomial satisfies a Conway-type skein relation - in contrast to the Alexander polynomial derived from the virtual link group.

Matrix Fourier-like integrals over the classical groups O_+(n), O_-(n), Sp(n) and U(n) are connected with the distribution of the length of the longest increasing sequence in random permutations and random involutions and the spectrum of random matrices. One of the purposes of this paper is to show that all those integrals satisfy the Painlevé V equation with specific initial conditions. In this work, we present both, new results and known ones, in a unified way.
Our method consists of inserting one set of time variables t=(t_1,t_2,...) in the integrals for the real compact groups and two sets of times (t,s) for the unitary group. The point is that these new time-dependent integrals satisfy integrable hierarchies:
(i) O(n) and Sp(n) correspond to the standard Toda lattice. (ii) U(n) corresponds to the Toeplitz lattice, a very special reduction of the discrete sinh-Gordon equation.
Both systems, the standard Toda lattice and the Toeplitz lattice are also reductions of the 2-Toda lattice, thus leading to a natural vertex operator, and so, a natural Virasoro algebra, a subalgebra of which annihilates the tau-functions. Combining these equations leads to the Painlevé V equation for the integrals.

We construct examples of nonnegative harmonic functions on certain graded graphs: the Young lattice and its generalizations. Such functions first emerged in harmonic analysis on the infinite symmetric group. Our method relies on multivariate interpolation polynomials associated with Schur's S and P functions and with Jack symmetric functions. As a by-product, we compute certain Selberg-type integrals.
