We study a group action on permutations due to Foata and Strehl and use it to prove that the descent generating polynomial of certain sets of permutations has a nonnegative expansion in the basis $\{t^i(1+t)^{n-1-2i}\}_{i=0}^m$, $m=\lfloor (n-1)/2 \rfloor$. This property implies symmetry and unimodality. We prove that the action is invariant under stack-sorting which strengthens recent unimodality results of Bóna. We prove that the generalized permutation patterns $(13-2)$ and $(2-31)$ are invariant under the action and use this to prove unimodality properties for a $q$-analog of the Eulerian numbers recently studied by Corteel, Postnikov, Steingrímsson and Williams.
We also extend the action to linear extensions of sign-graded posets to give a new proof of the unimodality of the $(P,ω)$-Eulerian polynomials of sign-graded posets and a combinatorial interpretations (in terms of Stembridge's peak polynomials) of the corresponding coefficients when expanded in the above basis.
Finally, we prove that the statistic defined as the number of vertices of even height in the unordered decreasing tree of a permutation has the same distribution as the number of descents on any set of permutations invariant under the action. When restricted to the set of stack-sortable permutations we recover a result of Kreweras.
Structure of large incomplete sets in abelian groups
Let $G$ be a finite abelian group and $A$ be a subset of $G$. We say that $A$ is complete if every element of $G$ can be represented as a sum of different elements of $A$. In this paper, we study the following question: {\it What is the structure of a large incomplete set ?} The typical answer is that such a set is essentially contained in a maximal subgroup. As a by-product, we obtain a new proof for several earlier results.
Supercharacter formulas for pattern groups

C. Andre and N. Yan introduced the idea of a supercharacter theory to give a tractable substitute for character theory in wild groups such as the unipotent uppertriangular group $U_n(F_q)$. In this theory superclasses are certain unions of conjugacy classes, and supercharacters are a set of characters which are constant on superclasses. This paper gives a character formula for a supercharacter evaluated at a superclass for pattern groups and more generally for algebra groups.
Partially ordered patterns and compositions
A partially ordered (generalized) pattern (POP) is a generalized pattern some of whose letters are incomparable, an extension of generalized permutation patterns introduced by Babson and Steingrimsson. POPs were introduced in the symmetric group by Kitaev [Partially ordered generalized patterns, Discrete Math. 298 (2005), 212-229; Introduction to partially ordered patterns, Discrete Appl. Math., to appear], and studied in the set of $k$-ary words by Kitaev and Mansour [Partially ordered generalized patterns and $k$-ary words, Annals of Combinatorics 7 (2003) 191-200]. Moreover, Kitaev et al. [S. Kitaev, T. McAllister and K. Petersen, Enumerating segmented patterns in compositions and encoding with restricted permutations, preprint] introduced segmented POPs in compositions. In this paper, we study avoidance of POPs in compositions and generalize results for avoidance of POPs in permutations and words. Specifically, we obtain results for the generating functions for the number of compositions that avoid shuffle patterns and multi-patterns. In addition, we give the generating function for the distribution of the maximum number of non-overlapping occurrences of a segmented POP $τ$ (that is allowed to have repeated letters) among the compositions of $n$ with $m$ parts in a given set, provided we know the generating function for the number of compositions of $n$ with $m$ parts in the given set that avoid $τ$. This result is a $q$-analogue of the main result in [S. Kitaev, T. Mansour, Partially ordered generalized patterns and $k$-ary words, Annals of Combinatorics 7 (2003) 191-200].
Lattice Polytopes and Root Systems

Consider a lattice in a real finite dimensional vector space. Here, we are interested in the lattice polytopes, that is the convex hulls of finite subsets of the lattice. Consider the group $G$ of the affine real transformations which map the lattice onto itself. Replacing the group of euclidean motions by the group $G$ one can define the notion of regular lattice polytopes. More precisely, a lattice polytope is said to be regular if the subgroup of $G$ which preserves the polytope acts transitively on the set of its complete flags. Recently, Karpenkov obtained a classification of the regular lattice polytopes. Here we obtain this classification by a more conceptual method. Another difference is that Karpenkov uses in an essential way the classification of the euclidean regular polytopes, but we don't.
Asymptotics of abelian group-partitions and associated Dirichlet series
We introduce a notion of a group-partition for a finite Abelian group, which is a generalized notion of the standard partition. To obtain asymptoticdistributions of group-partition, we study the Dirichlet series for group-partitions by employing the generating function of the plane partition.

Let Delta_{n-1} denote the (n-1)-dimensional simplex. Let Y be a random k-dimensional subcomplex of Delta_{n-1} obtained by starting with the full (k-1)-dimensional skeleton of Delta_{n-1} and then adding each k-simplex independently with probability p. Let H_{k-1}(Y;R) denote the (k-1)-dimensional reduced homology group of Y with coefficients in a finite abelian group R. Let R and k \geq 1 be fixed. It is shown that p=(k \log n)/n is a sharp threshold for the vanishing of H_{k-1}(Y;R).
Sur le groupe d'interpolation
We study the interpolation group whose elements are suitable pairs of formal power series. This group has a faithful representation into infinite lower triangular matrices and carries thus a natural structure as a Lie group. The matrix exponential between its Lie algebra and its matrix representation gives rise to a function with interesting properties extending the usual exponential function to two variables (which are formal power series) We finish with an application to enumerative combinatorics and the description of an algebra which generalizes the interpolation group.

Using a class of permutation polynomials of $F_{3^{2h+1}}$ obtained from the Ree-Tits symplectic spreads in $PG(3,3^{2h+1})$, we construct a family of skew Hadamard difference sets in the additive group of $F_{3^{2h+1}}$. With the help of a computer, we show that these skew Hadamard difference sets are new when $h=2$ and $h=3$. We conjecture that they are always new when $h>3$. Furthermore, we present a variation of the classical construction of the twin prime power difference sets, and show that inequivalent skew Hadamard difference sets lead to inequivalent difference sets with twin prime power parameters.

Consider the Cayley graph of the cyclic group of prime order q with k uniformly chosen generators. For fixed k, we prove that the diameter of said graph is asymptotically (in q) of order q^(1/k).
The same also holds when the generating set is taken to be a symmetric set of size 2k.
Enumerations of Cayley graphs
We characterize the equivalence and the weak equivalence of Cayley graphs for a finite group $\C{A}$. Using these characterizations, we find enumeration formulae of the equivalence classes and weak equivalence classes of Cayley graphs. As an application, we find the number of weak equivalence classes of circulant graphs.

Maximal Degree in the Strong Bruhat Order of Bn
Given a permutation P in Sn, let G(P) be the graph on n vertices {1,...,n}, where two vertices i<j are adjacent if i appears right of j in P and there are no integers k with i<k<j and k appearing between i and j in P. Let G'(P) be the graph obtained by dropping the condition that i appears right of j, i.e. two vertices are adjacent if the rectangle [i,P(i)] x [j,P(j)] is empty. In the study of the strong order on permutation, Adin and Roichman introduced these graphs and computed their maximum number of edges. We generalize these results to the Weyl group of signed permutations Bn, working with graphs on vertices {-n,...,n}\{0}, using new variants of a classical theorem of Turan.
A Markov chain on permutations which projects to the PASEP

The partially asymmetric exclusion process (PASEP) is an important model from statistical mechanics which describes a system of interacting particles hopping left and right on a one-dimensional lattice of N sites. It is partially asymmetric in the sense that the probability of hopping left is q times the probability of hopping right. Additionally, particles may enter from the left with probability alpha and exit from the right with probability beta.
It has been observed that the (unique) stationary distribution of the PASEP has remarkable connections to combinatorics -- see for example the papers of Derrida, Duchi and Schaeffer, and Corteel. Most recently we proved that in fact the (normalized) probability of being in a particular state of the PASEP can be viewed as a certain weight generating function for permutation tableaux of a fixed shape. (This result implies the previous combinatorial results.) However, our proof relied on the matrix ansatz of Derrida et al, and hence did not give an intuitive explanation of why one should expect the steady state distribution of the PASEP to involve such nice combinatorics.
In this paper we define a Markov chain -- which we call the PT chain -- on the set of permutation tableaux which projects to the PASEP in a very strong sense. This gives a new proof of our previous result which bypasses the matrix ansatz altogether. Furthermore, via the bijection from permutation tableaux to permutations, the PT chain can also be viewed as a Markov chain on the symmetric group. Another nice feature of the PT chain is that it possesses a certain symmetry which extends the "particle-hole symmetry" of the PASEP. More specifically, this is a graph-automorphism on the state diagram of the PT chain which is an involution; this has a simple description in terms of permutations.
Affine insertion and Pieri rules for the affine Grassmannian

We study combinatorial aspects of the Schubert calculus of the affine Grassmannian Gr associated with SL(n,C). Our main results are: 1) Pieri rules for the Schubert bases of H^*(Gr) and H_*(Gr), which expresses the product of a special Schubert class and an arbitrary Schubert class in terms of Schubert classes. 2) A new combinatorial definition for k-Schur functions, which represent the Schubert basis of H_*(Gr). 3) A combinatorial interpretation of the pairing between homology and cohomology of the affine Grassmannian.
These results are obtained by interpreting the Schubert bases of Gr combinatorially as generating functions of objects we call strong and weak tableaux, which are respectively defined using the strong and weak orders on the affine symmetric group. We define a bijection called affine insertion, generalizing the Robinson-Schensted Knuth correspondence, which sends certain biwords to pairs of tableaux of the same shape, one strong and one weak. Affine insertion offers a duality between the weak and strong orders which does not seem to have been noticed previously.
Our cohomology Pieri rule conjecturally extends to the affine flag manifold, and we give a series of related combinatorial conjectures.
The irreducibility of certain pure-cycle Hurwitz spaces

We study "pure-cycle" Hurwitz spaces, parametrizing covers of the projective line having only one ramified point over each branch point. We start with the case of genus-0 covers, using a combination of limit linear series theory and group theory to show that these spaces are always irreducible. In the case of four branch points, we also compute the associated Hurwitz numbers. Finally, we give a conditional result in the higher-genus case, requiring at least 3g simply branched points. These results have equivalent formulations in group theory, and in this setting complement results of Conway-Fried-Parker-Volklein.
Chirality Groups of Maps and Hypermaps
Although the phenomenon of chirality appears in many investigations of maps and hypermaps no detailed study of chirality seems to have been carried out. Chirality of maps and hypermaps is not merely a binary invariant but can be quantified by two new invariants -- the chirality group and the chirality index, the latter being the size of the chirality group. A detailed investigation of the chirality groups of maps and hypermaps will be the main objective of this paper. The most extreme type of chirality arises when the chirality group coincides with the monodromy group. Such hypermaps are called totally chiral. Examples of them are constructed by considering appropriate ``asymmetric'' pairs of generators for some non-abelian simple groups. We also show that every finite abelian group is the chirality group of some hypermap, whereas many non-abelian groups, including symmetric and dihedral groups, cannot arise as chirality groups.

We analyze the monodromy action, over the rationals, on the first homology group of the Milnor fiber, for arbitrary subarrangements of Coxeter arrangements. We propose a combinatorial formula for the monodromy action, involving Aomoto complexes in positive characteristic. We verify the formula, in cases A, B and D.
The Bloch-Okounkov correlation functions of classical type

Bloch and Okounkov introduced an n-point correlation function on the infinite wedge space and found an elegant closed formula in terms of theta functions. This function has connections to Gromov-Witten theory, Hilbert schemes, symmetric groups, etc, and it can also be interpreted as correlation functions on integrable gl_\infty-modules of level one. Such gl_\infty-correlation functions at higher levels were then calculated by Cheng and Wang. In this paper, generalizing the type A results, we formulate and determine the n-point correlation functions in the sense of Bloch-Okounkov on integrable modules over classical Lie subalgebras of gl_\infty of type B,C,D at arbitrary levels. As byproducts, we obtain new q-dimension formulas for integrable modules of type B,C,D and some fermionic type q-identities.
