We generalize proper coloring of gain graphs to totally frustrated states, where each vertex takes a value in a set of `qualities' or `spins' that is permuted by the gain group. (An example is the Potts model.) The number of totally frustrated states satisfies the usual deletion-contraction law but is matroidal only for standard coloring, where the group action is trivial or nearly regular. One can generalize chromatic polynomials by constructing spin sets with repeated transitive components.

Let M=M(n,q) be the average of the orders of the elements in the finite unitary group U(n,q). The asymptotic estimate log(M)=nlog(q)-log(n) +o(log n) is proved.
Using Equivariant Obstruction Theory in Combinatorial Geometry
A significant group of problems coming from the realm of Combinatorial Geometry can only be approached through the use of Algebraic Topology. From the first such application to Kneser's problem in 1978 by Lov% ász \cite{Lovasz} through the solution of the Lovász conjecture \cite% {Babson-Kozlov}, \cite{Carsten}, many methods from Algebraic Topology have been used. Specifically, it appears that the understanding of equivariant theories is of the most importance. The solution of many problems depends on the existence of an elegantly constructed equivariant map. For example, the following problems were approached by discussing the existence of appropriate equivariant maps.A variety of results from algebraic topology were applied in solving these problems. The methods used ranged from well known theorems like Borsuk Ulam and Dold theorem to the integer / ideal valued index theories. In this paper we are going to extract the essence of the equivariant obstruction theory in order to obtain an effective \emph{general position map%} scheme for analyzing the problem of existence of equivariant maps.

We find a sharp bound for the order of the automorphism group of a stable curve of genus $g$ with $3g-3$ nodes, and a sharp bound for the order of the automorphism group of such a curve with all smooth components. Combined with the results of our article math.CO/0608645 we find that graph theoretically, the cubic graph with a given number of vertices and most automorphisms is simple, but algebro-geometrically, the stable curves with $3g-3$ nodes that have the most automorphisms have non-simple dual graph.

For a connected semisimple algebraic group $G$, we consider some special infinite series of tensor products of simple $G$-modules whose
$G$-fixed point spaces are at most one-dimensional. We prove that their existence is closely related to the existence of open $G$-orbits in multiple flag varieties and address the problem of classifying such series.

We consider the Q-state Potts model in the random-cluster formulation, defined on finite two-dimensional lattices of size L x N with toroidal boundary conditions. Due to the non-locality of the clusters, the partition function Z(L,N) cannot be written simply as a trace of the transfer matrix T\_L. Using a combinatorial method, we establish the decomposition Z(L,N) = \sum\_{l,D\_k} b^{l,D\_k} K\_{l,D\_k}, where the characters K\_{l,D\_k} = \sum\_i (λ\_i)^N are simple traces. In this decomposition, the amplitudes b^{l,D\_k} of the eigenvalues λ\_i of T\_L are labelled by the number l=0,1,...,L of clusters which are non-contractible with respect to the transfer (N) direction, and a representation D\_k of the cyclic group C\_l. We obtain rigorously a general expression for b^{l,D\_k} in terms of the characters of C\_l, and, using number theoretic results, show that it coincides with an expression previously obtained in the continuum limit by Read and Saleur.

Fix a prime $p$ and an integer $m$ with $p> m \geq 2$. Define the family of finite groups \[ G_n :=SL_m (\mathbb{Z}/p^{n}\mathbb{Z}) \] for $n=1,2,... $. We will prove that there exist two positive constants $C$ and $d$ such that for any $n$ and any generating set $S\subseteq G_{n}$, \[ diam(G_n,S) \leq C \cdot log^d (|G_n|)\] when $diam (G,S)$ is the diameter of the finite group $G$ with respect to the set of generators $S$. It is defined as the maximum over $g \in G$ of the length of the shortest word in $S \cup S^{-1}$ representing $g$.
This result shows that these families of finite groups have a poly-logarithmic bound on the diameter with respect to \emph{any} set of generators. The proof of this result also provides a efficient algorithm for finding such a poly-logarithmic representation of any element. In addition it shows that the power $d$ in the $log$ bound can be arbitrary close to 3 for $m=2$ and arbitrary close to 4 for $m>2$.

We study cyclotomic association schemes over a finite commutative ring $R$ with identity. The main interest for us is to identify the normal cyclotomic schemes $C$, i.e. those for which $Aut(C)$ is a subgroup of the one-dimensional affine semilinear group over $R$. The problem is reduced to the case when the ring $R$ is local in which a necessary condition of normality in terms of the subgroup of $R^\times$ defining $C$, is given. This condition is proved to be sufficient for a class of local rings including the Galois rings of odd characteristic.
The combinatorial cost
We study the combinatorial analogues of the classical invariants of measurable equivalence relations. We introduce the notion of cost and $β$-invariants (the analogue of the first $L^2$-Betti number introduced by Gaboriau) for sequences of finite graphs with uniformly bounded vertex degrees and examine the relation of these invariants and the rank gradient resp. mod $p$ homology gradient invariants introduced by Lackenby for residually finite groups.

Kempf collapsing and quiver loci
Kempf [1976] studied proper, G-equivariant maps from equivariant vector bundles over flag manifolds to G-representations V, which he called _collapsings_. We give a simple formula for the G-equivariant cohomology class on V, or_multidegree_, associated to the image of a collapsing: apply a certain sequence of divided difference operators to a certain product of linear polynomials, then divide by the number of components in a general fiber. When that number of components is 1, we construct a desingularization of the image of the collapsing. If in addition the image has rational singularities, we can use the desingularization to give also a formula for the G-equivariant K-class of the image, whose leading term is the multidegree.
Our application is to quiver loci and quiver polynomials. Let Q be a quiver of finite type (A, D, or E, in arbitrary orientation), and assign a vector space to each vertex. Let \Hom denote the (linear) space of representations of Q with these vector spaces. This carries an action of GL, the product of the general linear groups of the individual vector spaces. A_quiver locus_ Ωis the closure in \Hom of a GL-orbit, and its multidegree is the corresponding _quiver polynomial_. Reineke [2004] proved that every ADE quiver locus is the image of a birational Kempf collapsing (giving a desingularization directly).
Using Reineke's collapsings, we give formulae for ADE quiver polynomials, previously only computed in type A (though in this case, our formulae are new). In the A and D cases quiver loci are known to have rational singularities [Bobiński-Zwara 2002], so we also get formulae for their K-classes, which had previously only been computed in equioriented type A (and again our formulae are new).
q-Eulerian Polynomials: Excedance Number and Major index

In this research announcement we present a new q-analog of a classical formula for the exponential generating function of the Eulerian polynomials. The Eulerian polynomials enumerate permutations according to their number of descents or their number of excedances. Our q-Eulerian polynomials are the enumerators for the joint distribution of the excedance statistic and the major index. There is a vast literature on q-Eulerian polynomials which involve other combinations of Mahonian and Eulerian permutation statistics, but the combination of major index and excedance number seems to have been completely overlooked until now. We use symmetric function theory to prove our formula. In particular, we prove a symmetric function version of our formula, which involves an intriguing new class of symmetric functions. We also present connections with representations of the symmetric group on the homology of a poset recently introduced by Björner and Welker and on the cohomology of the toric variety associated with the Coxeter complex of the symmetric group, studied by Procesi, Stanley, Stembridge, Dolgachev and Lunts.

In this paper, we give a more direct proof of the results by Clair and Mokhtari-Sharghi on the zeta functions of periodic graphs. In particular, using appropriate operator-algebraic techniques, we establish a determinant formula in this context and examine its consequences for the Ihara zeta function. Moreover, we answer in the affirmative one of the questions raised by Grigorchuk and Zuk. Accordingly, we show that the zeta function of a periodic graph with an amenable group action is the limit of the zeta functions of a suitable sequence of finite subgraphs.

In this paper we classify the multiplicity-free skew characters of the symmetric group. Furthermore we show that the Schubert calculus is equivalent to that of skew characters in the following sense: If we decompose the product of two Schubert classes we get the same as if we decompose a skew character and replace the irreducible characters by Schubert classes of the `inverse' partitions (Theorem 4.2).

Let A be a finite subset of the integers or, more generally, of any abelian group, written additively. The set A has "more sums than differences" if |A+A|>|A-A|. A set with this property is called an MSTD set. This paper gives explicit constructions of families of MSTD sets of integers.
Full heaps and representations of affine Weyl groups
We use the author's combinatorial theory of full heaps (defined in math.QA/0605768) to categorify the action of a large class of Weyl groups on their root systems, and thus to give an elementary and uniform construction of a family of faithful permutation representations of Weyl groups. Examples include the standard representations of affine Weyl groups as permutations of ${\Bbb Z}$ and geometrical examples such as the realization of the Weyl group of type $E_6$ as permutations of 27 lines on a cubic surface; in the latter case, we also show how to recover the incidence relations between the lines from the structure of the heap. Another class of examples involves the action of certain Weyl groups on sets of pairs $(t, f)$, where $t \in {\Bbb Z}$ and $f$ is a function from a suitably chosen set to the two-element set $\{+, -\}$. Each of the permutation representations corresponds to a module for a Kac--Moody algebra, and gives an explicit basis for it.

Let $G$ be a group of permutations acting on an $n$-vertex set $V$, and $X$ and $Y$ be two simple graphs on $V$. We say that $X$ and $Y$ are $G$-isomorphic if $Y$ belongs to the orbit of $X$ under the action of $G$. One can naturally generalize the reconstruction problems so that when $G$ is $S_n$, the symmetric group, we have the usual reconstruction problems. In this paper, we study $G$-edge reconstructibility of graphs. We prove some old and new results on edge reconstruction and reconstruction from end vertex deleted subgraphs.

Let $U$ be a matrix chosen randomly, with respect to Haar measure, from the unitary group $U(d).$ We express the moments of the trace of any submatrix of $U$ as a sum over partitions whose terms count certain standard and semistandard Young tableaux. Using this combinatorial interpretation, we obtain a simple closed form for the moments of an individual entry of a random unitary matrix and use this to deduce that the entries converge in moments to standard complex Gaussian random variables. In addition, we recover a well-known theorem of E. Rains which shows that the moments of the trace of a random unitary matrix enumerate permutations with restricted increasing subsequence length.

Starting with Ihara's work in 1968, there has been a growing interest in the study of zeta functions of finite graphs, by Sunada, Hashimoto, Bass, Stark and Terras, Mizuno and Sato, to name just a few authors. Then, Clair and Mokhtari-Sharghi have studied zeta functions for infinite graphs acted upon by a discrete group of automorphisms. The main formula in all these treatments establishes a connection between the zeta function, originally defined as an infinite product, and the Laplacian of the graph. In this article, we consider a different class of infinite graphs. They are fractal graphs, i.e. they enjoy a self-similarity property. We define a zeta function for these graphs and, using the machinery of operator algebras, we prove a determinant formula, which relates the zeta function with the Laplacian of the graph. We also prove functional equations, and a formula which allows approximation of the zeta function by the zeta functions of finite subgraphs.
